Came home and noticed almost of all of my pictures floor I'm not going to mention names, "professional" if u can call her that, took and edited my pictures. Have been coming to this exact JC Pennys Portrait Studio for 16 years continuously and have always bought the same Groupon. My family and I have always got to choose up to 4 to 5 different backgrounds, but have always resorted to using two Christmas backgrounds. This year around, they decided to verbally tell us in Person at our appointment that we weren't allowed to pick more than 1 Christmas background. They told us that it has always been the policy, yet no where online, on the Groupon, in their store, or any of the binding agreements of sale state anything with the policy of not allowing more than 1 Christmas background. They are just trying to up-sell us, and after talking to the supervisor of customer service they said it was a new policy they were upholding, and after asking where it is legally stated in the agreement he kept telling me, "I understand your frustration..." read more

Set up an appointment for pictures a month ago called the day before to confirm the time of 11 am ! Person told me we were all set get there at 10:45 and the person is just arriving and needs to set up all good 11 comes around and I'm told that she has me at 11:30 and can't take me till then because she has to follow the system and what if the person a head of me decides to show up !!!! I had great experiences for what I pay for: first of all, Booking is quick and often same day appointments can be available. We mostly arrive 5min earlier, choose the backgrounds and get it done. I'm not sure what people are expecting, but in a quick 15-20min session you can expect minimum 3 good pictures. They are no miracle workers - not every pose and picture is perfect. In addition, around holidays is packed but you just need to be prepared. Angel is quick and attentive. She really tried working with our boys and I appreciate her positivity. With JCPenny always running great promotions/ groupons we take advantage of that and I can't complain for less than $30 3 edited digital pictures with one printed or $30 for 60 Christmas cards (with Shutterfly). I can just advice to research what poses / end results you want and to let them know. It is also very helpful to book in a time when they aren't as busy (like on holidays), because they will take a little more time to take that great picture. Ok....so I'll admit, I was skeptical going in. I mean, mall photography and that whole stigma, but we were under the gun and needed/wanted professional portraits of our granddaughter done NOW, as our son is deploying in just days, and the grand baby going back to Texas with her mommy while he's gone. So I figured at least we'd have *something*, and wouldn't have to pay a small fortune in the process. Again, reading some of the reviews I was a bit worried, but everything worked out just beautifully! We arrived a few minutes early for our appointment, and Miss Angel took us in right away after setting up, and got right down to business. She was so patient and kind, and took a TON of photos! I WOULD GIVE NEGATIVE STARS IF I COULD. THIS PLACE IS THE BIGGEST WASTE OF LIFE!!!!! Set my appointment for 10am (right when they open) and the lady had to "set up the room" for the holiday pictures I wanted for my 17 month old. We waited 30 minutes while she was "setting up" so my child was playing with their dirty ass legos on the dirty floor (they must not own a vacuum). Once the room was ready, we went in there thinking there would be lots of holiday props as advertised. Nope, there wasn't. I got the holiday backdrop and a grey backdrop with "presents" (a grey box with a white stripe" all the holiday props were in the other room that we weren't allowed to use apparently. Now for the pictures. The rude girl who was taking the pictures took like 6 pictures of my child. Kept stopping and looking at the camera, while he's smiling away and she's missing all of the good ones. So we have 6 pictures for our whole session, and she then goes on to tell me that they DON'T EDIT pictures! WHAT?! isn't that the point of taking my child to a effing studio? I will never go to this location ever again, I don't know why I beefed away from Temecula or Escondido location. The staff was very mediocre @ best. Seem to be run by high-school kids.... they took however many shots they r required to take to create a package but they were not necessarily good pics. We went in for my son's new born pics. All but one shot came out bad. Why would I want a pic of my son scrunching his face because he was pooping? They were polite enough to offer to wait while we changed him (twice) but not patient enough to retake the shot to get a more flattering picture. We didn't entirely miss out though because I only paid $25 through Groupon a for a nice package. Got several size photos w 1 position. Needless to say we picked the one good shot that was taken. I just came from the worst experience ever at this studio. The short story is: we had an appointment booked for 12:15. No one had bothered to show up for work that day. We waited for nearly two hours (after repeated calls to the manager) for someone to finally show up. When he did, he was nice enough, but his apology was short and insincere. This is a bad enough situation in and of itself,but our situational difficulties made this ridiculously unacceptable. My sister made this appointment. She double checked that they would be open, some with the manager to ensure that this was a day they were scheduling appointments. We have a sister in from out of town, and this would be one of the rare opportunities that all eleven grandkids would be together. They range in ages from 4 months to 12 years. 5 of them are 2 and younger. As we knew this would be a difficult session, we all planned accordingly. Naps were arranged, lunch figured out, everything in order to get all families into the best possible mood. We arrived early... To a darkened studio. They were supposed to open at 11.our appointment was at 12:15. We spoke with JC Penny employees who informed us there was nothing they could do as it is a separate entity, but they did contact the manager. We struggled to keep the kids happy, distract them, make promises, etc... A reschedule isn't really possible since everyone works the rest of the week and my sister will be across the country after that. This was a singular opportunity. Nearly two hours later, a guy showed up. He apologized for the wait, but... By then, the under 2 crowd was just done. I think he tried to snap a few photos, but if they even turned out, we'll never know. We know that a large group, especially comprised of so many little ones, would be a challenge, but we did our due diligence. We scheduled, called ahead, planned it out. This is a huge disappointment, more akin to heartbreak. The next time we will all be together, the babies will be a lot bigger. Circumstances change by the minute, so knows what may keep this from happening again? We also heard nothing from this manager everyone was in contact with. At the very least, there should have been some form of contact, some apology, some attempt to set things right. Instead, we all left frustrated and sad. read more

Absolutely horrible. 1. My daughter smiled a ton while taking photos and the photographer didn't capture one photo of her smiling. 2. The photographer used the wrong background on our photos. 3. After we took photos the photographer immediately went to lunch before helping us select photos and purchase them. It took 30 minutes for someone to come help. 4. It took another 15 minutes to pay as the lady who ended up helping us decided to take a phone call and schedule appointment right before I needed to swipe my card. In sum, the pictures aren't that great and the customer service is awful. We spent 15 minutes getting photos taken and over 45 minutes standing in the store just waiting for someone to select photos and check out. Go anywhere else besides here for photos. read more

This place was honestly the worst photo studio I've ever been to. Total waste of money, the photographer couldn't take a decent photo. Anyone who has any interest in photography knows that you have to take at least a few photos of each pose. This photographer took only one photo of each pose and then made us switch. He was taking photos of our four month old. If you have kids you know you have to take a bunch of pictures just to get one good one because kids move a lot! This photographer took literally 16 photos, that's including the family photos and then some of just the baby, and in two different outfits. How long does it take to snap a photo? Um less than a second. So this guy spent literally all of his time standing there and could only take 16 photos! Seriously, don't waste your time or your money! read more

I am so sad to have to knock the star-count down for JCP Photo Studio. Long story short in one regard, our "guy" moved on to bigger and better things (presumably, I didn't wish to pry into the details of his departure but he's no longer there and that's the problem!) I never want to assume one person holds a business together, so I've tried time and time again to give fair credit, but now I've come to this unfortunate juncture. The staff there at present are a little too MEH for my liking, I'm not even sure they're individuals with art/media/photography degrees, certifications, professional portfolios, or even a knack for photography but rather they're just people that applied for the job and are gaining "experience" through each shift. They are really lacking on the customer service end too, I fee genuinely uncomfortable in there now! Photo sessions the last two times I've gone in this year have been SO rushed and poorly coordinated. The young lady that took my daughter's first photos in April seemed to know zilch about taking photos of a newborn. She didn't even have the professional warmth about her to really TRY for good shots of a person who, I totally understand, is a potato-creature at one month old. Instead we got lots of strange angles and pissed off baby faces. My biggest issue was how she really didn't take that many pictures and thus I really didn't have much to choose from. Fast forward to the day before Thanksgiving 2015 and my family is in for Christmas photos (if I didn't have a membership here I would likely not have returned, but trying to give the benefit of the doubt still...). While our photographer was nice, (a different, slightly older and bigger woman), she still only took maybe 20 pictures of my family of 4 and we were in and out of the session in under 10 minutes. (I didn't realize there was such a need for speed, I understand scheduling restraints but, man.) She was sweet and arranged us in poses that captured the essence of my family, more importantly, she got the 9 month old and 5 year old to smile, but then things got way awkward when it was time to select my photos. I liked how beforehand, they would leave us alone for however much time we needed to go over the photos we might want to buy, but this time she stood with me the entire time, panning through the photos making me feel awkward when I would ask her to scroll back to the previous one(s). Also, I'm sort of, really visually impaired, and kinda need to stick my face into the computer screen, so I feel really embarrassed to do so with someone I don't know at my side (but if it really bugged me I'm also able to speak up for myself, so...) Also, the photographer took some pictures of me and my husband alone without the offspring, I decided I didn't really want to buy those photos in the end and she seemed a little peeved to have taken those pictures on the first place (sorry!). I really wish they would accept coupons without them having to be printed out. I've never spent so much on my pictures before and I've been going here for photos of my kid(s) since October 2010. I also invest in their JCP photo membership as to avoid the sitting fee, so I would think they'd do me the service of applying a coupon or coupon code without the physical coupon on me, but I guess that's not possible. The membership does come with its own special promotions, but they work better in your favor when combined with a (printable) coupon. That being said, my decision to choose fewer poses and purchase fewer sheets was based on the fact that I really couldn't see myself paying more! The upsale game is real high here too! I get it, I've work retail, but their script for selling me on collages and pricier sheet sizes is so superficial. On picking up your images, they of course do some more upselling; I always say "no", but I was once met with "are you sure, because we're just going to throw them away so it's just a waste for us to print them". HA! Sorry, but that won't sway me, throw them away, it's cool! My apologies that your company uses the time and resources to produce prints that may or may not be bought, but no need to spell that out for me in that manner. So since I was so unhappy with my original session, I decided to call and see if we could get a re-shoot. I told Wayne (the manager) about my rushed session, incorrect background and just not being happy with the pictures and he had no problem scheduling me another photoshoot using the credit we had. He scheduled for us to be the first family in so we wouldn't have to wait and made note for us to not be rushed and pushed out like our previous shoot. I really appreciated how he had no problem scheduling another session for us and liked that he made sure to make note of the issues we had had previously. When my husband and I got there we worked with Jessica and she was wonderful!! She didn't push me out of the way, she let me in to get my daughters to smile, she brought out props and got the shots I wanted before moving onto the next idea. I liked her a lot, the pictures are ADORABLE! It was hard to pick just 6...from now on when I come back I will definitely be asking for Jessica! Worst experience ever! This is my 3rd time using JCP portraits- my other experiences have been ok but it's always come to my attention that their photographers are their receptionist, customer service and photographer so your session is generally interrupted at some point. I arrived yesterday 10min early for my appt. We waited until 20min after my appt time to be helped. Then another 10min for setup. Then while getting my son ready a customer walks in so my photographer walks out to help them and schedule an appt (he was the only one there). Then we start taking pics and the phone rings. Then after maybe 10mins another party shows up for their shoot. He walks out again. My 2yr old has completely lost focus and wants to play and is done at this point. He then asks me if we can wait so he can shoot the other couple "because he doesn't want them to wait" when he hasn't completed us yet. I decided to just pull the plug and stop shooting. Then he makes us wait for over another hour while helping the other party before he finishes the greeting card order we can to get the pics for. Meanwhile I have a 2hr old screaming and trying to keep occupied. Even tho they have great coupon deals, I def will not be coming here again. read more

HORRIBLE SERVICE. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY HERE. Went in yesterday to get photos taken of my 6month old son, 9month old nephew and 5yr old nephew. The lady who photographed them had no idea what she was doing and had 0 experience with children. Not sure what the ladies name was, but she was thick, Caucasian and had black hair with glasses. She was extremely awkward and did nothing to try to get the kids to smile or calm down. She also missed so many good pictures of them because she kept running back to the computer to delete her mistakes. She kept trying to get me to put them in awkward positions where they would fall over and kept asking "are you sure you can't get the 9month old to stand?" Like really lady? He's 9 months. On top of that she kept calling another jc Penny to ask questions on how to do things. And didn't even give us a military discount because she couldn't figure it out??? She did say she was new but that's no excuse for such a bad experience. My question is who left this lady in charge by herself??? They should be held accountable for these horrible experiences. They always have great deals/coupons you can use if you just want some regular prints. Hello, I am writing about my overall dissatisfaction with JC Penny Portraits. I had an appointment today at 12 pm at the Carlsbad Mall location. My girlfriend and I brought in our 5 week old child for his very first professionally done photos and today's experience was far from professional. To begin, the appointment before us took time out of our photo time. What was not fair was the fact that during our photo session we were being rushed to finish as soon as possible. After FIVE photos our "photographer" was ready to give up due to our child's crying. We made some changes and took a few more pictures and again after just a few photos our "photographer" was AGAIN ready to give up. At this point we asked for more pictures but of our son alone, the "photographer" was reluctant to give it a shot although our son had calmed down and was being cooperative. The "photographer" then called in her associate for help and the new photographer was a great help and made the experience slightly more pleasurable. We were also asked to choose two backgrounds but we never had the chance to have photos taken with the second background because of the lack of time we were given. Another displeasure was the amount paid for the service that was provided. $100 for a rushed 30 minute photography session and about 20 pictures. That value is RIDICULOUS. The service we received from the first photographer created the negative experience that my girlfriend and I had at JC Penny Portraits. I will not recommend JC Penny Portraits to any of our friends and family and when a recommendation is asked from us we will be sure to steer them away from the atrocious service and value that JC Penny provides. I told them I was running a little late, and when I got there they told me it'll be a wait, which I understood since I was late. 30 min into waiting I get up to look at the clipboard to see who was next, it was us, next thing you know, 2 ladies come to grab a clipboard and add more in, but to MY surprise, they put my way in the back and said "they were WAY too late, let's push them back." Ok wtf? Then another 20 min pass by and again, they fucken put my shit in the back again! I confronted them and ask "when am I next? because you keep putting my name in the back." Those 2 girls looked shock as they had no damn response back to me but to give me a dumbfound look. They probably had no idea that I over heard them at first and saw what they did twice, putting me all the way at the end just because I was 30 min late. The fuck kind of punishment is that for being late? Constantly putting me in the back when I'm close to getting my turn? I went from being next to being 4th to being 7th! read more

Studio/photo lightning was poor. Photos background looks gray, not white in photos. Studio was overbooked, and the clients were being rushed through. Slick sales ladies trying to get more sales in a sneaky way. This is what happened: I made an appointment for one year photos and sister photos. I told the ladies I had a special coupon for a $49.99 CD. I was asked if I wanted to participate in the special event (vintage). Of course, I did. What a great idea! As we began the shoot, I again mentioned that I was taking advantage of the special CD offer of $49.99. NO mention was made that the vintage photos are NOT a part of the special offer...until AFTER the vintage photos were taken. Suddenly, I was informed that they were NOT a part of the CD offer. Why was I not given this information before the photo shoot? Had this information been given to me, I would not have wasted my time nor theirs doing vintage photos. I felt like I was a victim of a 'bait and switch' sales tactic. Although I do want the photos, I have to walk away so as not to encourage this type of sales gimmick for others. It's not okay to take advantage of people in this way. It's a terrible feeling to feel like I need to spend another $100 over my budget in order to get cute photos. Had I known this ahead of time, I would have requested they spend more time on my one-year-old's pictures. These were the most important photos, and they were rushed in lieu of the vintage photos. This is the worst experience we've had ever!!! First when we arrived we weren't greeted with a smile or a welcome to our studio. I was bothered but I wasn't going to let that ruin my kids Christmas picture experience. Our "photographer" Guadalupe D was horrible. She seemed to be having a bad day, was giving orders to my kids who are 4 and 2 instead of making it fun for them, also she seem to be getting annoyed with my daughter, and to top it off asked my husband and I to leave the room very rudely. First of all i love taking pictures of my boys (two &a half, one &a half years old) toddlers!! The young girl must of been new, nice but new. She was telling the boys what to do.. Umm they are toddlers, so I did it.. She told them to hug each other, stare at each other, go on the floor... I had to show my babies what to do ,Or show them ! I brought my own banner (glad i did that) she sat them on the floor facing ,her by that point i was done. I took out some props, chairs, eggs, a sign that said easter 2017 & basically i did the shoot .i even had to ask her to put edits on pics wich she did not ask me at first. Like lettering, font,multiple pics on one page .I became a member there when my son was born but idk if ill be going back. I want a professional or at least have two ppl if they are just starting.hope someone reading this helps them & asks for an experienced staff member to take their pictures read more

I have been taking my kids here for over 4 years now. I pay $3.99/sheet (I always have a coupon) and they take several poses/clothes changes, etc. We ALWAYS end up leaving with good pics. Getting kids that young to smile is challenging, especially when the kids are 1 and younger but they still managed to do AND get great pictures. You get to see and order your pictures the same day and they are available for pick-up less than 2 weeks later. I think it is totally worth it! I have literally gone to this location at least 20 times and we will continue to go. I think they do a great job! read more

I have taken all of my children to this portrait studio for almost 10 years now. No matter the photographer or the day, I invariably went home with excellent portraits. Then, I moved to Georgia for a couple of years. The JC Penney portrait studio there was also top notch. I figured I was a lifelong customer. Then I came home. And the Carlsbad location had none of the photographers I was familiar with on either of my recent visits. Both times I was rushed and the photographers, although willing, just didn't seem to know what they were doing. One visit the photographer told me she could do something (a special pose) I described for her, and then after a whole sitting decided she couldn't. The next visit a pose I asked for wasn't even tried because the camera kept malfunctioning (user error?) and I had enough good ones to choose from already, right? No, turns out I didn't. Two tries since I moved back and mediocre both times. I will not be returning again, and this is coming from someone who was a dedicated customer for years. read more

I should have checked out Yelp before going to the JC Penny (aka. JCP Portraits or Lifetouch) studio in Carlsbad, CA with my Groupon! The manager Angel and I spoke on the phone TWICE before I showed up to find out I wouldn't be able to get a digital image (which we discussed and I needed ASAP) because the Groupon required me to wait (7-10 days) for prints. You know, the way it was just after the Earth cooled. I didn't want the 10x13, 8x10, 4-5x7's, 8-3.5's or 16 wallets, just a digital shot in my email. The big irony is that Groupon places a "Save a Tree" blurb to encourage us to redeem the coupon via a cell phone. After about 5 minutes attempting to reason with Angel I quickly realized this company doesn't care or understand the modern-day customer. On my way out I was able to share my story with a lady that wanted to know if they did passport photos. It was a just a little less satisfying than writing this warning/review that will go out to many more. read more
