We needed to prune and clean several trees, and among the half dozen or so companies we interviewed, found that John and the team were the friendliest and offered the best service, as well as having reasonable rates. I was very impressed by John's knowledge and how much he taught me in the initial inspection, which ended up well over an hour since he pointed out quite a few things about my backyard and the trees there. John and his crew just left after doing a great clean up of an over hanging Alder tree (big branches over roof) and a Maple tree in our neighbor's yard that had a large limb over our driveway. They clean up after and made it look great! John's crew chops all the limbs up on site via their chipper. His fee was as good or slightly better than others for what is included. JD Tree Service removed a super tall maple tree in our backyard that had a compromised trunk. The location was in a tricky spot, about 15ft from our house in a narrow yard. JD was recommended by some neighbors, so we asked him to give us a quote. He was very professional and reasonable in the cost. A crew of 3, including JD, came in and removed the tree and all the debris within hours without any problems. Since the yard was too narrow for them to get any heavy equipment into the back, they used climbing gear, ropes, and pulleys! They even did some extra work on the fly that was not in the original quote. They cleaned up everything but the trunk pieces, which we gave away. The yard looked great when they were done! After they left, we discovered one of the stump pieces was too heavy for us to lift, so JD came back the next week to cut it to smaller pieces for us. He also delivered a load of bark/mulch for our yard for free. I would highly recommend JD Tree Service if you have a large tricky tree to be removed! read more

My husband and I have been researching tree removal services for a few months now, and finally we settled on having JD Tree Service come out and help us with some trees (2 which we wanted removed, and some pruning also). They are very knowledgeable, and we just generally enjoyed their professional approach. They have been very prompt in their responses. Others have mentioned that they were pricey, but we felt they were very reasonable, given the quality of work, and the safe approach they use. They left our garden very clean after the removal. They told us that they had arranged for someone to come pick up the remaining tree stumps, and later that evening, someone arrived and took them away, so we were delighted with their organization skills on getting the remaining stumps removed. After a recent storm one of my front yard trees almost lost one of its larger branches. The branch came away from the main trunk and eventually rested on another tree looming over my power line. I got a few estimates and JD tree came in at the most competitive rate. Two weeks later they came with a bucket truck to complete the job.The work carried out was quick and efficient and left me with a tonne of chips for the yard and logs for the fireplace. We've worked with tree services in the past where an arborist visits the site and writes up the work, but doesn't come with the work crew to do the work. John did both the evaluation and led the work crew, doing most of the work personally. We had a few trees that were dead and needed to come down. One was a giant Sweet Gum tree in the middle of our deck. The cons I list here are not huge problems - just noticings. I would use them again in a heartbeat. The other companies I had come out had 4 and 5 stars on Yelp, but after talking with a certified arborist, found that they were incorrect about our trees. John was the only one who had it right! Pros: -very knowledgeable and explained exactly what was happening with the trees and why they needed to come down -they have referrals for a certified arborist and tree stump removal (we used both, and both were good) -they have a guy who comes out and takes the fire wood that's left behind for free (I didn't want to keep it) -provided proof of their license and insurance -owner, John, does the work himself, along with an assistant -friendly, polite, and trustworthy -Megan answers the office phone and is very helpful and friendly -after taking down some fence to get to a tree, they put the fence right back up, good as new Cons..ish: -expensive - more than twice the cost of the two other estimates we had -in the middle of working on my trees, he went next door to ask if he could provide his services to work on my neighbor's trees, then proceeded to do an estimate for him (I just told myself it must have been done during their break) -unforeseen event of having to go through my neighbor's yard to get to a couple trees, which was not discussed beforehand. -cleaning up meant taking a leaf blower and blowing it all against the fence (just the saw dust - not branches) -they don't do stump grinding so although they contract out, I still had to wait for the guy to call, then set up a separate date and payment for it -only accept cash or check read more

Not only do you actually see copies of their business license, contractor's surety bond, liability insurance and a ton of references but John actually works with his guys and really knows what he is talking about. John gave us an honest and thorough estimate of all the trees in our yard, including some advice on keeping them healthy. The focus was on a large Japanese Maple which was long overdue for some help and a plum tree which had taken a beating in the last two winters, including losing 2 large branches. They completed both of the tasks, included a smaller camellia tree trimming project, and cleaned up behind them so the yard looks great too. We trust JD Tree Service completely! John and his crew have been to our property three times over the years for pruning of both deciduous and coniferous trees. This time he removed two golden cypress that were at least 40 feet tall. Our lot is small, but somehow John managed to drop the branches into a very limited space without damage to our surrounding landscape. It was quite the spectacle to watch his method of starting at the bottom and climbing up close to the top of those tress using a pulley system. Cris dragged and chipped the branches as they were cut, and then did an amazing clean-up of the area. This is more like a "pre-review"; the reason we're *going* to use JD when we're ready to get our work done: I contacted several services when I was looking for fresh logs for mushroom inoculation. I got one very uninterested "I'll tell the owner you asked" and then nothing...until John got my email. He not only responded positively, he enthusiastically researched mushroom spawn in logs and told me what he had on hand that might suit. He listened to what I was looking for and contacted me as soon as he had what I wanted. He cut them to the right lengths, invited us to his home to pick them up on a weekend, labelled them and carried them to the truck. He did all this for us twice. Apparently he helps out wood sculptors the same way. All of that was wonderful, but then we spent some time talking. We saw how much love and respect he has for trees. He showed us the decisions he had made that allowed him to keep his own trees intact (attention Seattle arborists! There's more to it than removal!). John is the owner of this business and a Certified Arborist, and he is the one you will meet when he comes to bid the job. I appreciated this, and the fact he is kind, friendly, professional and prompt. His bid is all written up nicely and professional so it is clear to everyone the scope of work you are paying for. I was able to schedule the work in a week and John and Chris did an excellent job. We had several large cedars removed and branches taken out up against our power lines which is on our property line on a short steep hill and right over top of our shed and chicken coop. This is a dicey area and John climbed the trees and took every branch off one at a time and lifted them down safely. They stacked the good wood for us without me even asking and cleaned up all debris. I also had them prune my fruit tress and they look fantastic. I've met John at my property after having 3 different "so called arborists" visit. John is the ONLY certified arborist out of a total of 4 professionals who came to assess my tree situation. John was extremely knowledgeable, wasn't trying to sell me on anything, and taught me a whole lot of things during his visit here. According to John my trees are healthy. I've had "I'm almost done with my exams to be an arborist" people come over to my place who tried some FUD tactics (e.g. - you have to take down this tree and windsail the other trees on your property - sign up now and you'll get 10% off). Nothing like that with John. Super friendly, extremely knowledgeable, after his visit I feel very comfortable with my tree situation. John helped us out with a large Western Cedar that was damaged during a windstorm a few weeks ago. He was very courteous, prompt and knowledgeable, making us feel part of the process the whole way. Unfortunately, our tree broke in such a way that most of the remaining top of the tree needed a rather technical removal and John and his team were able to do the job without any issue.
