If there's one thing I've learned from my recent health issues, it's that perhaps I'm better off…read morewaiting until my treatment is actually done to write an actual review. After having reviewed Dr. Webb upon initial reflection shortly after my discharge from St. Francis Hospital, subsequent reflection, and additional experience has me writing an updated review that I think more accurately describes my experience. Dr. Webb is a vascular surgeon with Vascular Surgeons of Indianapolis and works with the Franciscan Physician Network. Thus, he serves out of St. Francis Hospital. He was a consulting physician for me during my recent hospitalization - making both the recommendation for my amputation and completing the operation itself just before Thanksgiving. The amputation, which was above the knee for my left leg, has resulted in my being off work since to allow for healing, building strength, recovery, and basically re-learning as much of life as I can. Everything I do is different now. I entered the hospital for 10-days of fairly brutal IV antibiotic treatment secondary to severe dehydration and serious infection issues. The leg was almost an afterthought - it wasn't really addressed until about day 4 or 5 of my stay. By day 7, it was gone. After having a negative experience with the ortho doc consulting, I was concerned about the vascular surgeon. While Dr. Webb had the same recommendation, the experience was much better. While the ortho doc couldn't stay off his iPhone, Dr. Webb was attentive. He listened well and even gave me room to offer feedback. You could tell he had that surgeon swagger - I later learned he is nationally known for a specialty of limb salvage and has been listed in one survey as one of the top 100 physicians in America. He's a little bit intimidating, a fact that you can even see within the hospital where I was treated as nary a soul would consider doing anything without his absolute approval. Truthfully, while that can be intimidating it's actually a reassuring quality to experience when that same physician is tasked with amputating your leg. While the ortho doc had been rather dismissive, Dr. Webb may have had an instant opinion but also took the time to listen, to explain himself, to explain the reason for his recommendation, and to just generally show some compassion. I was initially very resistant to approve the amputation, believing for sure that there must be a way to save the limb as some physical therapy a year earlier had shown positive signs for the limb. Yet, I also couldn't deny that the leg had grown rather obnoxious in size and was truly looking horrible. While I'd been lugging it around, I was now in a hospital bed watching it take 1-2 people to even lift it. It's no wonder I finally collapsed in exhaustion and dehydration. Dr. Webb initially agreed to try to save the leg, though he considered it very unlikely to succeed for reasons he thoroughly explained. While I thought he did give a bit too much deference to those who used prosthetics, the truth is that after processing for 24 hours I knew he was right. So, after being given 24 hours to process information and start my grieving process, I approved the amputation and it was scheduled the very next day. In terms of the surgery, there's no question Dr. Webb is at the top of the game. I can't imagine the surgery having gone any better. He's a stellar surgeon and I'd easily go to him again should the need ever arise. However, the reason I'm knocking the rating down to a 4-star is simple - at times, I felt like he favors people who utilize prosthetics. At one point, he even acknowledged that saving the leg would have been a higher priority, though just as unlikely, for those who need it to maintain activity on a prosthetic. On the flip side, I'm an incredibly active paraplegic who just 6 weeks earlier had completed a long-distance wheeling event. I live alone with few consistent physical supports - having the lower left leg was a big deal and I felt like he was out of touch with that. I also felt like there was a lack of attention to post-surgery. As I noted above, staff were at times confused about whether the leg should be wrapped, etc. It sort of felt like "Okay, the leg's gone. Next." When I showed up in his office to have the stitches removed, the exam room wasn't accessible and he did so through the end of my pant leg. 5 stitches were missed and it just seemed like there was no attention to "What's next?" A couple of minor concerns aside, I'm confident he was correct about the necessity of amputation and confident he did a top-notch job. He helped make a difficult time more manageable. I would go 4.5 stars if I could, but I can't. So, 4 stars it is.
