this is an historic Inn that has been totally modernized. very upscale. I stayed in a suite that had an attached sitting room which was very comfortable. if you are a business traveller who is tired of chain look-alike hotels the Jefferson Inn would be an excellent choice. as mentioned in other reviews it is located in heart of the Southern Pines business district so it is an easy walk to boutique shops and restaurants. bettys Creperie is right around the corner for breakfast. opens at 7 am. there is coffee in each room. Very charming place to stay in Southern Pines. It's right in the middle of shops and restaurants. There's not a restaurant on-site but there's a lounge on the main floor. There was a pop-up cookie place, Millie's Mama Bakes. I'm not sure if it's there daily. If it's there, order the cinnamon roll. It was the best I've had! The room I had was very spacious and updated. There was a small fridge and coffee maker in the room. I had a very comfortable night here. It was a very casual check-in and check-out process. You can arrange for an early check-in or later check-out if needed. The property management that runs this place is very accommodating. read more

Online reviews were spotty and the social media pages are largely neglected and comments on their few posts are negative. We didn't feel comfortable booking online without making contact with a human first. My husband and I were able to book last minute for a quick getaway Sept 2023. Jefferson Inn is in the heart of town and everything is within walking distance! The manager and the housekeeper (I really wish that I could recall their names...maybe Tonya) went over and ABOVE to ensure that our stay was wonderful. We had trouble with key code but the manager responded promptly. I requested wine glasses. Despite housekeeping having already left for the day. They worked feverishly to make sure that there were wine glasses in our room before we returned from our dinner reservation! Our room was clean, spacious and had everything we needed for a much needed getaway. We met another couple who stays at the Jefferson Inn for romantic weekends. The four of us met while walking through town for breakfast at an amazing crepe restaurant. We've become friends and kept in touch! read more

My family was in town for the Carolina International Horse Show and wanted to stay in town. We had a wonderful stay. D'Onna was over the top from the time we parked our car until we checked out. Her and her team were ready to help us with our luggage and anything else we needed such as extra coffee pods and creamer (even asked which flavors of coffee we preferred)! There was a bit of confusion with our room but D'Onna handled it beautifully and I could not have asked for any more professionalism. The beds were comfortable, rooms were clean, and the rooms had everything we needed. We stayed in room #9 for two nights and room #12 for one night. Both rooms were very spacious and accommodated our family of 4. The restaurant/bar downstairs looked fun but we were so exhausted after all day at the horse park that we were ready to tuck it in. The sound machines in the rooms were great! I would highly recommend this boutique hotel! read more

It seems that this hotel has ratings that reflect only their bar. This is a shame because the rooms in the Jefferson Inn are beautiful. They are completely updated and very comfortable. The hotel was built somewhere around 1930's and had its first major renovation in the 1980's under the direction of Sebert and Christine Griffith. It was sold a few years later and has been steadily maintained since that time. They no longer have a working restaurant but do offer a continental breakfast. Kelly was working the front desk and she displayed the most gracious southern hospitality that I have experienced in a very long time. Kelly's hospitality is reflected of the current owner who hand writes a welcome letter to each guest. I highly recommend this quaint hotel. read more

If you are planning to sleep during your stay, I would suggest you choose another hotel option. We arrived for a weekend from out of town and chose the Jefferson Inn as what appeared to be a quaint inn near the center of town. Little did we know that they really do not care whether their guests are able to actually sleep there. The Inn has a small courtyard with a bar out back. Our room on the 3rd floor looked over this courtyard. On Friday and Saturday nights the hotel becomes an extremely loud concert venue. We had our windows closed and still could not hear the television in our own room, much less go to sleep. The concert goes on until after midnight. We called down to the front desk and they said there was nothing they could do. In addition, the hotel is only 1 block from the Amtrak train line. When trains pass through town in the middle of the night, they sound their horn for the entire time they are going through the town. This happened twice on Friday night at 1:30 AM and around 4 AM - each time lasting multiple minutes. While this is not under the control of the hotel. It is still extremely disruptive to sleep. If you want to attend a loud concert then the Jefferson Inn could be a good choice. If you are looking for a hotel as a place to sleep, I'd suggest you choose a different option. read more

We have stayed at the Jefferson Inn before and absolutely loved the charm, location and the staff. We booked a room last week not aware that the ownership has changed. To our huge disappointment, what was once a quaint charming historical property has been stripped of its antiques and reduced to a "AirB&B" look alike with grey laminate floors and grey paint and chrome fixtures. No longer is there staff at the reception to greet you. There is no reception area at all and the management neglected to mention there is a very large construction project going on inside and out. The bar is no longer there and the patio area was filled with construction material and equipment. Guest must now use a passcode to gain entrance into the lobby and their room. At 8:00 in the morning we were awakened by a painter setting his ladder up against our bathroom window. I got up and closed the blinds hoping he would move to another area once he realized the room was occupied. He did not and he continued to work and sing loudly. When he moved to work on the window overlooking our bedroom, I asked him to work somewhere else until check out time but he would not leave. Only after I took his picture and called the management company to complain did he finally move his ladder to another area. (The was 2 hours later). When I called the management company my call went straight to voicemail. When I received a call back about an hour later, the lady I spoke with apologized and had no explanation as to why we were not made aware of the construction project when we booked our room. She offered us a discount on a future visit. Needless to say, there won't be a next visit so the gesture was mute. I gave a 2 star rating because the location is good and the rooms were clean to be fair but the lack charm, amenities and staffing left me totally disappointed and the construction worker refusing to work somewhere other than our windows was unacceptable. I go about twice a month and sit outside. The Bartenders use to be much more pulled together. I worked here when I first moved to the area (before I really knew the deal). We wore form fitting black pants, the famous sparkle tank, full hair and makeup. We were expected to look the part as well as have proper skills and service etiquette. In order to uphold these standards; however, you need good management which is one thing The Jefferson is sorely lacking. Nowadays the girls are looking rough, they are consistently out of drink and menu items. No more delicious vegan wrap (sad face). Now it's fried crap and pre-made soups served with no attention to detail. I don't even bother ordering a mixed drink. Stick to beer or wine... but half the time they're out of my first choice (sparkling wine). Go for the Southern Pines experience. Enjoy some live music outside but don't expect to be wow-ed or anything. read more

I can't imagine renting the room directly above the bar. Not good for clients who have to work in the morning....this is not for business people. Unfortunately, and I will explain below, 3 stars given when you rent a room and expect your room to be quiet during band days. The bar and outside patio area is 5 plus stars which is great and it is probably the real money maker in this business but too noisy for the hotel that is 102 years old. Such a shame because both are great....just not great together. The Jefferson Inn should advise people when they make reservations that this is not a quiet hotel when the bands play in the hotel bar. The place was packed, so I can understand the stress the staff must have felt, but they have by far, the rudest bartender I've ever encountered. I am simply appalled & disgusted with this establishment & the owner for not caring enough about their hotel guests & patrons. My husband & I were hotel guests at The Jefferson Inn Saturday 9/12 - Sunday 9/13 to celebrate our 10-year anniversary for just 1 night away from our home in Cary. We left my 90-year old mom at our home to care for my cats for the day, but I didn't want to spend too much time away from her. This establishment is NOT abiding by the CDC guidelines & NC mandate for face masks, social distancing & reduced capacity requirements. While they have signs posted on the exterior doors of the hotel requiring masks to be worn inside the hotel, they are doing NOTHING to protect patrons & hotel guests in the courtyard where the bar is & band plays. At 9:40pm with face masks on, my husband & I returned to the hotel after an enjoyable 'safe' evening out in hopes to enjoy a drink in the courtyard bar & listen to the live entertainment. After entering the hotel lobby, we headed out to the courtyard. I held the courtyard door open to let hotel guests in that had trouble opening the front door into the lobby. I immediately surmised the over-capacity situation whereby patrons were elbow-to-elbow throughout with no masks and said to my husband, "I don't feel safe here." We quickly came back inside to the lobby. The patrons in the courtyard were in their mid-20's to early 30's. I approached the front desk & advised of the unsafe situation that was transpiring in the courtyard to the woman at the front desk---no face masks, no social distancing, jam packed crowd. She advised that she had no control over what was occurring out there. I asked to speak to the hotel manager. She said she didn't know where he might be, but after a few minutes the 'owner' appeared in the lobby to speak with me. Curtis D. Dean, Owner I spoke to the owner regarding my safety concerns about the overcrowding in the courtyard area, no masks & no social distancing. I told him that this was our 1st time out for a night to get away from home during the pandemic to celebrate our anniversary, that I had a 90 year old mother at home & that I was highly concerned that the establishment was not abiding by the NC mandates. He told me that I should 'not go out onto the courtyard'. That was his response. I said, "So you're not going to do anything? You're not going to ask the band to make an announcement regarding the mask & social distancing mandate?" He cordially said that he would not. I walked away & up the stairs to my room and just said, "Shame on you, shame on you." Needless to say, I have no plans to patronize this business again unless major changes are put in place. I am a career event planner in the NC Triangle area & plan to share my experience with my strong network of event planners. I would never put my clients & guests in such an unsafe environment---this proprietor needs to do better...but will he step up to the plate? He is also a Triangle real estate broker---which I am as well. I'm just really, really disappointed that our 1st 'getting out of the house' experience was so negative purely due to The Jefferson Inn's lack of care for its guests & patrons. Aside from the lack of CDC/NC Mandate abidance, the beds were very comfortable, but we didn't have a sofa chair in the room which was disappointing as I wanted to read my book. 2 double beds were in the room that were too small to fit 2 people. I recommend they upgrade to at least queen beds. The bar soap selection was poor full bar "Ivory." I would suggest a smaller weekend size soap that is of higher grade. Ivory is super drying and horrific on sensitive skin. The noise level is really bad between the rooms. There was a really loud talking room down the hall--we could hear everything. The hotel should replace the room doors to reduce the external sound and also insulate the walls on the hallways. Not sure which, but something needs to be done to address this. read more

Eh- I've been here multiple times for a "night out". It's one of the few bars/hang outs in the area which attracts all types of people but doesn't make the experience any better. The staff are okay- helpful but not over attentive or friendly. The location is beautiful (an old inn) but the bar- goers make the place trashy. Bottom line- go here in the summer- Friday/Saturday's they have a live band, a good crowd and space to spread out with your group of friends. PS- I think staying at the Inn (on the weekends) would be TERRIBLE, unless you want to party or listen to a party half the night. read more

Allowed a friend with autoimmune encephalitis to be assaulted in the bar and have her cell phone thrown across the room and shattered. Only to laugh and then lie to the police when they came in to make the report. Bartender participated. See below: ----------------- So here's what happened: At this bar I was walking past to meet friends coming from a wedding a guy laughed at a padded boxing help and was like, "What's with the hat?" And I quick explanation of seizure disorder, autoimmune encephalitis which causes the falls etc. So the guy laughs at me, says "ha! You're name is Bullshit" and punches me in the exact spot where my left temporal lobe is split causing me to where the helmet. I told him he just assaulted me and he continued to call me names. So I stepped away to the bar tender, told her I wanted 911 called, should I do Ito or would she prefer to? She refused to because she didn't see it happen. So as I got on the phone with the cops trying to get them the address, a woman stepped over, grabbed the with both hands, slammed me against the bar, snatched my phone and threw it across the spaces. This is head damage #2. Ruins shatters to pieces an iPhane 6 in perf condition. To educate the ignorant, it is also akin to making fun and attacking someone in a wheelchair prob crouches or using a cane for example. It means multiple head injures which is life threatening for me but fortunately I same fine now. The hotel and these people. When I made the police report finally, they challenged my sobriety which was 0. When I willing agreed to blow in the breathalyzer, they refused to allow me. And then nether of the at least 2 bartenders 1) stand near by 2) have security called, or 3) give the responding sheriffs testimony as to what happened. Nobody who works that bar is smart enough to stand next to the woman who reports has some sort of issue and says a man hit her. She also then lied an told the police she's been serving me alcohol all night. (I've been at the wedding venue most of the night and I don't drink booze) read more

So this isn't a review of the hotel section of The Jefferson Inn, but instead of the bar section... Which really is the more important of the two anyway. I have a long history with the Jefferson Inn. I remember it in its glory days back in the early 2000's. During this period I frequented the Jefferson Inn watching my close friend, the late, great Nathan Davis play gigs there. He used to let me play his breaks there as well. So from a nostalgic standpoint, it will always be special to me. In fact my first ever live performance was out on the patio during one of his gigs. Also the food there used to be amazing back in those days. The BBQ Chicken Pizza was the best I have ever had. Unfortunately the inn shut down for many years and was renovated and is now under new ownership. It now looks much better, but the menu has changed. Traditionally the music at the Jefferson Inn has always been excellent, and the patio is the perfect place to hear it during the warm summer evenings in the pines. The staff at the jefferson inn is wonderful. It's filled mostly with beautiful women, some of which are my close friends. They are extremely nice women both professionally and socially, so if you are there... Tip them well. They work hard and they deserve it! So now onto the reasons I didn't give The Jefferson a higher rating. Well plainly put... I am just not impressed by their bar selection. The best beers they have are Sam Adams and New Castle. To me a bar should be rated not only on the staff and decor, but also the beer and wine selection. I rate harshly on this scale, because really it doesn't take much to upgrade the selection... Just throw in a few craft beers from breweries like Dogfish Head, Terrapin, or Sweetwater and you are golden. Also another reason I am not going to rate the jeff higher is due to the over priced nature of the drinks served. I have paid less for beer in NYC. They charge this much to try and make as much money possibly off the tourists who pass through, however it ends up shafting the locals. Also I have to complain about the golfer's who drink there too. I wish they would go populate the Pinehurst bars like they used to, and leave a place like the Jefferson to the locals. Anyway, that's about it... It's worth checking out, and if you live in the area you probably won't need to read this review to know what the jeff is all about. read more

I visited the Jefferson Inn this past weekend, a Saturday night. I asked for a cocktail that had 3 ingredients (gin, lemon juice, and cointreau). She had a very confused look on her face then proceeded to tell me she had no lemon juice. My fiancee ordered a Mai Tai and was told, "We don't serve drinks like that, like daiquiris or frozen drinks." We chose to leave at that point and went to Bell Tree where we both got the drinks we wanted. The bartender had never heard of my drink but was more than happy to make it. There were also only 2 customers at the bar and the Bell Tree was full of customers. May want to consider expanding your drink line or get a bartender who is more experienced. read more

Not able to fit an out-of-town vacation into our schedules, my husband and I stayed here to celebrate our first wedding anniversary. We'd planned to have dinner here, as well, but were informed at check-in (not in advance) that the dining room would be booked for an event all night. Instead, we went out and decided to use our $20 voucher towards a drink or two at the bar when we returned. By the time we came back, the bar, both inside and out, were packed to the brim. We didn't want to wade through the drunken crowd and loud music. We'd had visions of playing footsie at the hardwood bar over a couple of cocktails. Instead, having given up our illusions of a romantic night, we grabbed a few snacks at Walmart, went up to our room and tried to make the most of the evening. Unbeknownst to us, the entire Inn turns into a VERY loud club on weekend nights. The music, directly outside our window, did not stop until after last call. We tried to laugh it off at each turn, but it became comically bad. Even breakfast the next morning was pitiful. Cereal and a few sad pieces of fruit. The nicely appointed room and large travertine shower could not begin to make up for a ruined anniversary in what was marketed as a classically Southern bed and breakfast. If you want to be a club, market yourself as such and save the rooms for barflies too drunk to drive home. Misrepresentation is simply bad for business. read more

I love the patio and the music. However, it is a mystery why the drinks on the patio are twice as much as opposed to when you go inside to order. DO NOT order the food. It is full of MSG, salt and comes from a can. I was sick for two days. The menu clearly needs updating and a honesty policy. It is not real food. Bleh! Powdered cheese? Did they purchase the ingredients from a van down by the river? Great location in southern pines right off of the main drag where dining and shopping are. We had purchased a groupon which included $20 dining certificate for their tavern. I do wish we could have tried somewhere else to eat though. Husband had fettucini and said it was seasoned almost to the point of being over seasoned. I had the fish and chips which I would not recommend as it made me sick later. She crap soup was very good. As for our room it remains your standard room with nothing special to comment on. However the noise factor was horrible and we both tossed and turned all evening. We had been pre warned about our room having that problem so I can't blame them entirely for that, but I believe it was the only king room they had. read more

Terrible service. Upon entry, we asked if they had a cocktail menu to which the reply was "let me see if we still have one lying around." After she found a menu, we ordered two $7 drinks from the menu, one of which was a martini "the favorite". We were served both drinks in miniature transparent plastic cups, including the martini! The martini had ice in it. Everyone else in the "restaurant" was being served in glassware. To top it off, our bill was $18 for two $7 drinks. The bartender acted like she couldn't be less interested in helping/serving us and basically shoo'd us away from the bar. This inn is loaded with old fashioned charm. Several of us stayed here for a couples weekend. The rooms were clean and spacious as was the bathroom. The bed was quite comfortable. I would recommend staying here to experience something outside of the ordinary chain hotel. The staff was very friendly and welcoming. The check in for our large group was a breeze. It is a little noisy due to thin walls, but it wasn't much of a bother once we got settled. The bar area downstairs was a great place to gather with our friends before and after dinner. The staff there was accommodating as well. All of the female bartenders were wearing sequined tops. Not sure if that's a requirement or not, but it looked uncomfortable and out of place. read more

Pub food is good. Great outdoor seating area with outdoor bar as well as full bar inside. Beautiful building in a great location. I'm going to make a review about the Inn , not primarily the bar as others have done.. The Inn is very cozy and quaint. The front desk staff are so friendly. The bed was so comfortable. The only negative comment I have is how loud the drinks are across the street. All I heard until 2am was loud yelling . So if you stay here you should get a room on the other side of the Inn. I did stop at the bar for a few drinks before it got busy. The bartender, the first one was so sweet, but the one that came in later.. she was not so cheerful. There are train tracks right by, but the sound of the train was not too bad. Overall if you want to stay in a cute little town in NC, stay at the Jefferson. read more

The Jefferson is the official starting point for nights out in Southern Pines and usually turns into our ending point as well amazing live music can always be heard on the weekends and if you're new to town The Jeff is the ideal location to meet locals. My friends and I have never had a bad experience. On nights when I've gone on my own I have fun with the girls behind the bar. Stacey and Annie are a riot and they will make you feel like you're out with friends. They do get extremely busy, but even during a rush they welcome me as soon as they see me and do the same with everyone else while getting your drink out fast. Even the door men take time to talk with and welcome customers. The staff really gives this bar a welcoming family feel. This quality will keep my friends and I coming back and is something most businesses have lost over time. read more

We needed a quick get away, the room was great, comfortable bed, I am a snob when it comes to sheets and the sheets were very nice. the Inn has a lot of charm and was just what we needed. Before we went to dinner we had a couple of drinks at the bar, the bartender was friendly, my drink was served in a small plastic cup, there is glassware behind the bar and after asking she agreed to put it in a glass. I get serving drinks in plastic for the crowd that comes in later to listen to the band but use glass for the evening crowd. I suggest getting snack mix for the bar, again just for the evening crowd. We went back later and listened to the band, a lot of fun. Great location too, a lot of shops and restaurants within walking distance. read more
