I didn't stay in the hotel, so I cannot speak to the rooms or the accomodations. But on Good Friday, I had lunch in the Tavern. They opened at 11:30 and I was standing there as soon as the door opened. It's such an old school feel, something out of the 1920's or 30's. Then again considering the history of this hotel, that's not too surprising. I was offered a basket of free house made chips; that was super cool! The bartender gave me some recommendations, but I went with the turkey sandwich. I pretty much knew I was going to go with it too. Thick cut turkey (and I do mean thick), applewood-smoked bacon, Munster cheese, lettuce, sliced red onion, tomato and chipotle aioli on focaccia bread. What a great sandwich, one of the best turkey sandwiches I've ever had. I got the sweet potato fries for my side, they were hot and crispy. With the side of honey mustard (which I also poured on my sandwich), it took everything over the top. Oh and it included a big pickle spear, always a plus! And for $16, that's a heck of a deal for Pinehurst. The beverage selection isn't the biggest. They have three draft beers, but there are a lot more canned options. Absolutely incredible architecture and interior design. You can feel the history of Pinehurst in this building. The rooms are very quaint and homey. They also have all the amenities from the spa so you get to test out their products. I've been attending the Holly in for years. I live in the area. Always enjoyed it until now. My family and I entered the foyer and immediately smelled extremely strong pungent "air enhancer" odor throughout the hotel. Many Guests, including myself and my friend are all allergic to this type of scent. I don't know why they ruined this entire place with that terrible smell but please,please someone stop the artificial chemical odor coming forth in that beautiful hotel. Went on a little getaway with my wife and we were staying at the Holly Inn. Upon arrival we were greeted by a young lady named Danielle. Although she was very welcoming, she had some issues answering some questions about the area as well as some billing concerns that we had. We were sent over to the Carolina Hotel to have our concerns addressed. Porcha at the front desk was extremely helpful and answered all of our questions and took care of any concerns that we had. The room was very nice and cozy. We had meals at the Carolina dining room and the Pinehurst Brewing Company, both places had wonderful service and meals. We had a wonderful time. The service was great (that is how they got the star), but this hotel does not meet expectations, especially when it's an "overflow" for the main Carolina hotel. The toilet paper holder was not secured to the wall, receipts from prior guests' stays were found in our room, paint was on the finishes, the tiles in the bathroom were missing... . But this was not the worst thing. At around 1 am, the staff decided to play drums on the kegs outside, and then at around 2 am (after calling security) they decide to take out the trash on a brick path. Here's the thing about wheels on a brick path at 2 am.... It's loud. But what's louder is when the kegs drop off the rickety cart to and from the trash. I'm not sure if the walls are not insulated, or if the staff has no common sense? I also do not understand why they would place paying guest in such close proximity to such a noisy part of the hotel? Not worth the money. Definitely not somewhere to go and be pampered, rest or relax. It's not often you're in a hotel and after calling the operator twice in one night you can't wait to check out and head to your own home. The hotel is better than a motel or an inn.... The staff and the environment made this stay a nice experience. I also loved the free homemade chips at the bar. But, a warning.. the rooms are dated, the TVs were so old I doubt they were LCD. The guide on the television didn't work. The bedding kept unraveling when we slept. That made it very uncomfortable. I was surprised we only had full size beds and not queen. The heat was difficult to regulate. We were on the ground floor, room 218.Right next to the stairs to the parking lot and the dumpsters. Because of the location of the room, the garbage pick up at 6 am everyday and the ice machine dumping large amounts of ice in a bucket, plus, the bump bump bump at all hours of the day and night of folks dragging their luggage was annoying. The Tavern had great chips, but my BBQ ribs were drowning in peppery sauce that was just terrible. I really thought this was the worse meal I had on property all week. Pinehurst is great. If you can get a room on a higher floor and only order drinks at the Tavern, this place would be OK. read more

I stayed at the Holly Inn for a corporate event on a Friday and Saturday night. I had never visited Pinehurst Resort, and so I was not sure what to expect. I checked their website to get a feel for the place, and some idea about the room I would be staying in. The "room only" rate starts at $200/night, and that increases on weekends. Some of the more premium rooms can easily surpass $300/night. Keep in mind, these are "room only" rates - no food, no golf, simply a room. I also noticed that the hotel (and rooms) were rated by AAA as a 4-Diamond Award Winner - that is pretty impressive. When I made it to my room, it was a huge disappointment. Sure, there was a king size bed, and the room was clean. It contained your typical 25" LCD TV, a phone, and a small mini-bar stocked with beer, wine, and liquor (for an additional charge, of course). It was not, by any stretch of the imagination, a large room. Nor did I find high-end linens on the bed. There was nothing at all special, unique, or upscale about the furniture, the bed, the lighting, or anything else. To make matters worse, the hotel has a terrible heating/cooling system. Each room has it own little system...but you cannot switch between heat and cool. When the building is in the "heat" mode - your only option is heat, or no heat. You cannot turn on the air conditioning. Although it was only 55-60 degrees when I visited, it was getting somewhat warm in the room due to the sun. Thankfully, the windows did open (and they stayed open the entire time I was there). On the morning of checkout (Sunday morning) there was a knock at my door. It was 9:15am. It was housekeeping, wondering if I was out of the room yet. 9:15am is a little early for housekeeping, especially since the posted checkout time is noon. Its not that The Holly Inn is particularly bad. It isn't. If this place cost $75/night, I would be perfectly okay with the accommodations. However, when the cost surpasses $200/night, your expectations increase with that price tag. I was very disappointed in the room, and with my overall experience. read more

I'm giving three stars based mainly on the staff (they were great) but taking away stars for the condition of the room! I entered the lobby after being made to wait until 6pm to get my room! I was hot and tired from a long day (conference and golf). The front desk immediately recognized this and really took care of me! She told me to leave my bags and car and they would take care of everything for me. They did! However, this is where the great experience ends. The room I was given was at the very back of the property. As I walked through the halls I was literally looking at the back of house area for conference rooms and kitchen. I felt like I was in a staff area, not a guest area. The room was small but quaint. I guess some would say it had character. I say tired! Very worn carpet and the wall paper was pealing in the bedroom and bathroom. Things that didn't work: the temperature control for the shower did not control well (I kept having the water temp change significantly without me touching it), none of the air conditioning controls worked as well. Because of the location of my room, I heard the garbage pick up at 6 am and what sounded like an ice machine dumping large amounts of ice in a bucket. I had to stay at the Homewood Suites for the first two days of my visit before transferring to the resort. I would have rather stayed had I known the condition of my room especially with the massive price difference between the two ($98 at Homewood Suites and $249 at Pinehurst Holly Inn). The staff saved the day and we're very helpful and friendly every time I interfaced with them. Keep the staff and refresh the property! read more

Reminiscing the fantastic weekend getaways the Holly Inn has always provided. This is truly one of my favorite places on earth. It's just under 2 hrs east of Charlotte in the Sandhills of NC, so, it's ideal for the quick weekend getaway. Centered in the middle of Pinehurst Village the accommodations are perfect for a short walk to many wonderful little boutiques, restaurants, bars and theater. It's far from modern, much more like going home to mom and dads, only with updated amenities like an outdoor pool, business center, 2 in-house restaurants and valet (No gym - you're on vacation - relax!). Built in 1895, it's part Victorian and part Arts and Crafts in style and boasts hard wood floors and decorative period tile throughout the lobby area and it's 80+ rooms. All enhancing the cozy, tranquil feel you get the moment you walk in. The Concierge attendants are friendly and helpful and greet you warmly when you arrive. There is a convenient Shuttle bus that will take you back and forth from the Main Resort every 20 mins. Pinehurst, known for being one of the most Famous Golf Destinations in the US has several options for the Duffers but it is also home to a Fantastic Spa and offers a unique shopping experience. Let's just say, I LOVE PINEHURST. On my last visit, which was rather impromptu, we had been visiting Seagrove Pottery Village which was less then 30 mins from Pinehurst. With hungry belly's we found ourselves at my zen "happy place" and at the patio bar/restaurant (very casual), we ordered Bloody Mary's and homemade Potato Chips while relaxing the afternoon away. After enjoying a few cocktails, we decided to continue the special day and check in. They were very accommodating to us last minute guests and provided the essential toiletry needs. With that covered, all we needed was some new duds - check, then bring on the good times.... So for Birthday's, Anniversary's, Weekend Getaways, Golf-a-Palooza, try the Holly Inn. Yup. Thas one classy place. The whole Pinehurst experience is felt at the Holly. Everything feels vintage and Victorian, but modernized enough to be comfortable. Shuttle buses run constantly and keep you from waiting more than 2 minutes for a shuttle at anytime of day. Staff was 100% southern hospitable, just as you'd expect. The pool is serviceable, but you can always hit the family friendly Carolina for the big pool experience. If I could afford to be a regular, I would. 4.5 stars. Ps. I was not a guest at the Holly but I figured I'd try the food since it is a part of the prestigious Pinehurst Resort. When I walked in I felt comfortable as I was greeted by everyone! I sat at the bar and let's just say I felt like I was at the basement of my house eating a burger and drinking whiskey with friends at my bar. The staff was very kind and social and the food was great. The sous chef came to me in person to ask me how the food was. That really shows that they care about the customer experience. This review is specifically about the service at their restaurant. I'll start by saying the food was pretty good, but that's where the "good" ends. This was my first time visiting there, I was a guest of a member. We were looking for a quick bite to eat before our late dinner- and the Holly was pretty empty so it was perfect timing. We tried to order glasses of wine, and were carded, granted we look really young- but they sent out 3 different employees to verify our IDs only to refuse to serve us alcohol. Whatever, I'm not going to fight with them if they refuse to serve us, but it was definitely odd. Then we ordered, Jamie was our server (she was awful) and our food was enjoyable. What was not enjoyable was never being checked on by our server, never having our drinks refilled, and then being ignored for the entirety of our meal. I had to flag down a server for our check, 20 minutes after we had finished eating. When the check came, my friend asked if it was alright to put the member card down for payment and our server said "you're a member?" In shock. What was surprising about being a member? Overall super rude and the fact that they included an 18% tip was ridiculous. I wouldn't have tipped 18% for that service at any restaurant. read more

We have been recent fans of this restaurant, having dined at the Holly Inn Tavern multiple times over the past few months. We actually were considering the Holly as an ideal Sunday early supper location. We are deeply distressed to have to report that the past 3 times - and yes, we gave them 3 more tries - the food has been TERRIBLE. The wait staff is entirely LACKADAISICAL, almost clueles - seem totally disinvested, so unlike what they had been - and they had come to know and recognize us as repeat patrons. The salmon BLT that I had so enjoyed was not even a shadow of the former rendition I had had. The bread was dry, barely toasted, and the sandwich literally fell apart as I tried to pick it up and eat it. Salmon, a simple single piece of lettuce, and a pale, anemic tomato slice fell apart. I had to eat it with a fork. Untoasted bread was NOT what I had ever had. The sandwich no longer had mayonnaise. Instead, the bread was pitifully smeared with a careless pass of what looked like butter. Yuck. After the bacon came essentially raw, or at best, partially cooked, flaccid and not at all crisp, I asked for the bacon to be provided on the side, cooked crisply. That actually defeats the entire idea of a salmon BLT, I'm sure that makes sense. The fries that the Tavern offered were limp, greasy, and cold. Cold. I tend to prefer my fries warm and crispy. These were anything but. Three times. And sweet potato wedges? Forget it. I was told they are "out of season". Funny, but we buy sweet potatoes regularly and find them available all year long, not seasonal at all. The incredible warm, seasoned, potato chips that we had come to enjoy when you first are seated at the table, with that amazing seasoning, are GONE. Cold, greasy, supermarket potato chips are standard fare now. Thanks, but I'll pass on those, too. The attitude of the staff has really gone down hill, as well. Not one person cared when we asked why things had changed. In fact, the male barkeep was seemingly argumentative, and appeared to be insisting that the food we knew we had had previously was not what we had, at all. We are really wondering what has gone wrong here. Wait staff doesn't care, food is less than desirable, and the entire experience is one we will not be repeating, at least for the foreseeable future. There are too many good restaurants from which to choose to waste our expectations, appetites and money at the Holly Inn Tavern in the future. SO disappointing. Truly. read more

Loved this Inn. We stayed in a suit on the 4th floor and other family members had regular guest rooms. The rooms have everything you need and are decorated to have that old New England feel while keeping it modern. Beds were comfy and housekeeping did a wonderful job of cleaning the room each day while we were gone. The front desk was very professional and friendly. We had breakfast during our stay and the server was fantastic. We enjoyed drinks in the tavern several times during our stay though I did not care for the appetizers Hope I can return to the Holly in the near future ! read more

This is not a review of accommodations, rather the food on the patio/tavern. I had high hopes for dining on this patio. It was a very nice Sunday and we had just left church. I'm late 30's and I was with my young son. The service from the start was underwhelming (I will say the guy tending bar was very nice/helpful). However, Both female servers acted irritated at our presence. Food was expensive, 15$ for fish and chips and 8.95 for kids hot dog. I was willing to pay that to sit in a nice place. However, the Kenny G music playing, my empty drink, and the surprise that gratuity is added on your bill automatically (and nobody mentioned it, I had to ask for an itemized receipt!!!! Sneaky! I would have tipped more!) really irritated me. I am a local and just stopped in to eat. I have no idea why gratuity is automatically added at lunch. And the service, again, is horrible and while I was here the place was maybe at 25% capacity. If your 60+ in age you may like this place, but it is really nothing special. I will never go back. Never. There are too many really good places to eat in Pinehurst and Southern Pines to waste a single second at this mediocre place. read more

I did not stay here, but I had a terrible experience in "The Tavern." We ordered a drink, waited 15 minutes for the server to come back for our food order. Finally, we got someone (not our waitress) to take our order. No one came back to refill drinks. We waited for 30 to 40 minutes, and finally flagged down the hostess. She says that she is so sorry and never could tell us what had happened to our food. We paid for drinks and left. I was so upset that my day was ruined!!! read more
