My 93 yr old mom fell and broke her radius and ulna at the wrist. The ER at El Camino did a poor job setting this fracture but referred us to Dr. Kliman. Thank God for this man as he re-set her arm correctly so she can avoid surgery. He is very skilled and knowledgeable and gave her the best chance for a full recovery. Highly recommended. Dr. Kliman is my orthopedic surgeon. Always thorough and explains everything, which is tough to do as I am a physician and require explanations as do most patients. Likely the reason some complaints about waiting time are due to the fact that Dr. Kliman, unlike many physicians today who have 10 minutes for each visit, is thorough and answers all the questions and is hands on. If you wait in his office, it's because he is being a good doctor and not leaving the office at 4pm every day....old time service, not managed care big clinic delivery of care and f/u with physician extenders like PAs and NPs. Terrific surgeon and great preoperative and postoperative care. FYI I have also been referring patients to him for 30 years plus because of his skill and care in taking care of patients. read more

Dr. Kliman was the on-call Ortho surgeon at El Camino Hospital when my 90 year-old mother had a fall and fractured her hip. While I, as the daugher, didn't get a chance to speak with him while mom was in the hospital (only 3 nights), we had to follow-up while she was rehabbing in a skilled nursing facility. He was more than I ever expected - kind, respectful, compassionate, funny and conveyed genuine concern about my mother's health and abiltity to regain her mobility. He spoke very sweetly, plainly and encouragingly to her. All the time he respected her autonomy to live life on her own terms, but gently encouraged her to engage in activities that would benefit her health. Dr. Kliman is a welcome reminder that there are still those out there that enter medicine to truly help others. I'm an attorney, and I work with a lot of physicians and can confidently say that in my opinion, Dr. Kliman is a stand out. I'm a bit too young (I hope) to need his care, but when I do, I hope he, or someone like him, is still practicing and providing the level of care he provides. Lastly, to echo a physician's review, if you have to wait a few more minutes than expected at your appointment, read this as a very good sign. Dr Kliman is one of the best doctors we have ever visited. My husband was in serious pain for 2-3 weeks and the attentive and kind receptionist was able to "squeeze" my husband in to Dr Kliman's very busy schedule. We are incredibly thankful as Dr Kliman listened to him, asked tons of questions, touched and moved my husband's leg trying to figure out how to help him. Dr. Kliman has done a great job for me - knee and shoulder surgery. HOWEVER, his front office staff, i.e., the "phone-side manner," was ridiculously insulting. I recently called to make an appointment w/him (been about 6 years since my last visit/surgery), and this is word for word the conversation. Me: "Hi, I'd like to make an appointment with Dr. Kliman, I am an existing patient." Her: "What's your insurance?" (I swear I'm not making this up.) Me: "Uh, wow, that's an odd first question - do you want to know my name?" Her: "Your insurance please." I gave her the info but was disgusted and it really turned me off, to the point that I almost hung up and contacted another Dr. What if I didn't have insurance? Or, if I were an independent billionaire and my insurance was called MY CHECKING ACCOUNT? I hated the phone experience, and had I not been an existing patient, I would never have made it to being a new patient. read more

I have been treated by Dr. Kliman since he started in this area. Unfortunately due to my "ability" to keep hurting myself in sports etc. he repaired my knee a number of times and after some years, him trying a custom brace, shots, etc to avoid the inevitable, he did a total replacement. How did that work out? A few months later I was refereeing high school soccer! He also repaired a rotator cuff injury and reattached a bicep muscle for me. As others have said, he is a super surgeon who tries other things before simply going the surgical route if he can. he has treated my daughter, and just recently my wife for a fractured wrist due to a bad fall. He takes time with you, explains what is going on in plain English and hsi post op care is over the top too. If allowed we would give him ten stars for a rating.. He is as good as it gets. read more

Dr. Kliman is brilliant, but his approach and style may not be for everybody. I have yet to walk into his exam room and see him take longer than about 5 minutes to determine a highly specific diagnosis. While his approach may seem overly casual, he's just so experienced from years and years of surgery that he can run a limb through a few range of motion tests and just KNOW what's wrong because he's seen it so many times before. He's chaperoned me through a number of minor orthopedic issues, always taking the most conservative approach possible. That means he recommends surgery only when nonsurgical interventions have failed or simply won't work. That doesn't mean he doesn't do surgery, or doesn't do it well. After months of increasingly excruciating knee pain, Dr. Kliman diagnosed and trimmed back a torn meniscus in my right knee several years ago. I was up and walking around within an hour after the surgery, and off crutches after just a couple of days. He knows his stuff. His schedule is often crowded and his office frequently runs late, but his expertise is more than worth it, as is his ability and willingness to go into as much detail as you need to make you comfortable with diagnosis and proposed treatment. read more

I fractured a bone in my foot when I was on vacation a while ago. The ER doctors fixed me up and told me that when I came home I'd need to find a local Orthopedic doctor to make sure everything was healing up properly. I had 3 office visits with Dr. Kliman (i chose him based on a recommendation). He's probably a skilled doctor but the way he interacts with patients could definitely use some improvement. I think a broken foot is probably the most boring and straightforward injury someone would go to an Orthopedic Doctor for, or at least that's the sense I got from this guy. He knows what he's talking about but his manner was not very helpful and he spent very little actual time (maybe 10 minutes each visit, and that's including time taking and waiting for x-rays) and seemed rushed when answering my questions. Also, every time I went there I had to spend around 45 minutes in the waiting room so scheduling doesn't seem to be organized well in his office. I wouldn't rate a doctor badly just based on his manner and wait time (especially for a specialist) and my foot healed up just fine. I guess that adds up to 3 stars. read more

yeah i will agree with the other reviewer about the wait time, you are often seen almost an hour to an hour and a half after your scheduled appointment time, but thats all the bad i have to say about Dr. Kliman. I had a complicated fracture in my right elbow while I was roller skating with my kids 7 months ago. The ER doctor fixed my broken bone pieces up nicely. The bone healed well but I had no idea how important it was to move my injured elbow around once I was out of hard cast in order to recover elbow motion. I trained myself left-handed to keep things going at work and home but didn't want to bother to fight with the right arm. My right elbow became really stiff and I had problems to straighten my arm or to bend it to reach my mouth due to elbow adhesions. 3.5 months after my injury I went to see Dr. Kliman. He's caring, knowledgeable and treats patients comprehensively - he mentally fixed my attitude before he physically fixed my elbow. He took time to explain all the options I had and evaluated each thoughtfully, considering risks, outcomes and my insurance coverage. He urged me to do intensive physical therapy plus home exercises and showed me how to leverage my arm to improve motion range in daily life. He warned me it won't be fun but I need to do it. "You need a good arm to hold your baby." he said. It was painful and sometimes the pain during physical therapy reminded me the pain in labor without epidural. Anyway, "no pain, no gain." He monitored my elbow status and consulted my physical therapist in decision making of further surgery for my elbow. The surgery was done beautifully and I could tell he was so skilled, careful and considerate. I went to physical therapy right after I was discharged from hospital. 4 days later my kids couldn't tell which one was my broken arm anymore after I put long sleeves clothes on. The angle he picked for incision is a blind spot when I walk so the scar will just stay there peacefully out of my sight and out of my mind. No nerve affected and even better, the finger numbness resulted from my original injury is waking up now. About the waiting time in his office, I guess they have an express checking out if you work hard and get an A+ in your performance. I waited less than 10 minutes on my last after surgery visit. Anyway, plan for long waiting and you may have some quality reading time in the neat waiting room. I don't want to break anything else to go back see Dr. Kliman again, but I'll remember to be "tough" when I need, then rainbow will show after rain. Doctor Kliman is the best doctor in US ever met. Most of the Doctor I met before only knows to give pain killers, but Dr. Kliman listens to your problem. My wife was having a Hip joint tear, for which she was suffering from last 5 days. I don't have had appointments with Dr. But I called front office and explain the severity of my wife pain. They managed to squeeze some time for my wife from the busy schedule of doctor in the same day. Doctor treatment has really helped my wife to reduce the pain, and also he suggested to go for specialized doctor of Hip joint in case of pain persist. After reading the positive reviews, I went to Dr Kliman for help with significant arm pains, losing muscle strength. He asked a few questions and recommended a cortisone shot. I asked if I could have an X-ray or MRI to verify the root cause, but he said that it would not show anything and that cortisone was the only option. I agreed to the cortisone shot (my first ever) and he told me to stay off of it. It felt better for a while, but when the cortisone wore off it was even worse than before. I returned about four months after the first visit with extremely severe pain. I couldn't move my wrist without pain. My arm would not straighten. With my arm extended, I could not pick up anything.. even a pencil. Dr. Kliman told me that I needed another cortisone shot, and did not want to run any tests or MRI's. He wanted to do two cortisone shots before considering surgery. The cortisone wore off the second time, and my arm was not back to normal. I went to another very well respected doctor, who, without input from me, ordered a 3M high resolution MRI. The result showed that Dr. Kliman's diagnosis was incorrect, and I should never have been given a cortisone shot for my condition. I am hoping that it can still heal correctly at this point, but it is questionable. I realize there are many positive reviews for Dr Kliman, which is why I originally went to him. However, I would recommend requesting verification of the condition prior to any cortisone shot or procedure. It could prevent long term pain and chronic conditions. If he refuses to run the diagnostic tests as he did with me, I would recommend seeing one of the other highly qualified doctors in the area. read more

I visited Dr. Kliman's office for chronic hip pain. I was hoping to obtain information on the source of the pain and how best to treat the pain. Dr. Kliman is obviously very knowledgeable and experienced, but he appeared to have little patience for my low impact issue. He told me to take Advil. He might be right, and that's all I can do, but I think his exam focused too little on muscular pain I described to him. Now I will go to a different doctor in hopes to get more attention and an MRI so my pain can ideally be solved instead of managed. read more

I am a retired physician and am careful whom I trust taking care of me. Dr. Kliman gets the highest rank possible. He is thoughtful, careful, and exceedingly skillful. I have seen some doctors who seem to function with the philosophy of "I have a hammer and you must be a nail." Dr. Kliman (who knows my body, unfortunately inside and out, top to bottom) functions on the "what can I do to most efficiently and effectively treat this person before me. He takes time to educate me on what I might be doing to cause the problem, what non-surgical options can help, and then we think together if any surgery is needed and under what conditions. I just visited Dr. Klineman regarding my right knee and even though I have't had surgery yet I was really blown away with all the time he spent explaining my options. He is a caring and wonderful doctor. I don't think I've been to a doctor who would actually spend time giving me such useful feedback and along the way was not pushing surgery. I liked the fact that he showed me the X-rays right then and there so that I could see the magnitude of the issue. Dr. Kliman has seen numerous members of my family for hip replacements, ankle surgeries, knee surgeries, etc.. It was only a matter of time before I would need to see him myself. I took up the sport of triathlons over 2 years ago and after training and finishing my first Ironman late last fall of 2013, I had a pain in my right shoulder/rotator cuff from the many hours in the pool swimming. Overuse injuries are very common in endurance sports. What I like about his advice for treatment was to be very conservative at first and to continue down a series of alternative treatments before he would even consider surgery. He is very thorough and because he has been doing this for some many years he may appear he's moving very quickly but it's because of his experience and expertise that allow him to point to a particular diagnosis and treatment plan. Dr. Kliman performed ACL replacement surgery in my knee. Recovery was fast and I am very satisfied with his surgical skills. In office visits, he takes his time with each patient. I appreciate that he doesn't rush me out the door, but be prepared to wait up to 90 minutes past your appointment time. I did have a problem when I tried to return to activity after the standard recovery time, damaging the graft. He emphasized time and time again that I be careful with it, but that recommendation would have been best supported by insisting that a physical therapist (PT) clear me for activity. My PT emphasized a phased reintroduction to activity after evaluating my strength through a series of tests. If you aren't 100% consistant with PT exercises (who is?), make sure you have a plan for returning to activity. The biggest danger is in the missing muscle control, which would normally serve to protect your joints from damage. read more

Dr. Kliman has that rare combination of not only superior technical/clinical expertise AND a sincere concern for the patient. Relative to his technical abilities, his work in replacing my hip using the anterior approach was "perfect." I say this because after a year since the procedure I almost have to remind myself that the procedure was even done, i.e. my legs are still the same length, I have restored range of motion so I can still engage in a full range of activities as a "50-something," and I have no pain. Relative to his personal concern, he scheduled regular follow up post op appointments in his office to monitor my recovery, and even personally visited me in the hospital prior to my release home after the surgery. He and his staff get an A+ as health care providers. read more

Waited 3 weeks for first appointment, waited 1/2 an hour to be put into a room, another half hour inside the room until the Dr appeared. This process was repeated when waiting for second appointment. All together 6 weeks were wasted with no proper direction to find reason for my pelvic pain. At the second appointment, I got a referral to MRI for scan of Lumbar spine. I gave up on Dr Kliman at this point, I clearly had sharp ongoing pelvic pain which for some reason he could not relate to. I followed seeing Dr Mills at Stanford, at first appointment I was referred to MRI for Pelvic scan and indeed the Radilogogist reading points to a partial tearing of certain muscles. During appointments with Dr Kliman I hade a feel Dr Kliman does not really understand or believe my problem. Had I not acted on my instinct I would have waisted more time and expense at his suggested MRI which would not show the cause of my pelvic pain. read more

We had the best experience with Dr.Kliman, we had him perform 2 surgeries, one for my 4 yr old sons trigger finger and another one, my husband's ACL reconstruction.He was the most skilled surgeon, he had so much patience, when he explained the procedure to us, pre-surgery, during consultation he sat patiently and explained everything in deep details. My partner has had both of her hips replaced by Dr. Kliman with the anterior approach with Dr. Kliman. We found him after much searching throughout the state of California...he is knowledgeable, confidant, considerate and most important truthful. On our first visit my partner asked when it was time to have the surgery- his answer- only she knew the answer to that question. We grilled him with our 100 questions- he answered all of them with ease. The appointment lasted 45 minutes (sorry to those in the waiting room) with no appointment for surgery we left with a plan for us to call when my partners pain reached a point that impacted her quality of life. 6 months I sat in the El Camino Hospital waiting room waiting for Dr. Kliman. She came out with less pain then she went in! Maybe we waited a little too long? Either way the hip has been great and she had 3 pain free years- until the last 12 months when the 2nd hip started to whine...and it was an easy choice. Dr Kliman was on speed dial. Dr. Kliman helped our 10 year old daughter with a broken ankle. He put her at ease, answered all of her questions, and explained everything. He treated her with the same respect he treated us (as parents). He's an amazingly hard worker - long days! With the exception of administrative items, he does everything himself. He called us several times around ~7pm in the evenings to explain the surgery procedures and next steps, met us at the hospital, did office hours, and then checked up on her at 7am in the morning.
