My mother just had an absolutely terrible appointment with Robert Millard today. He was rude, dismissive & completely unhelpful. He told her there's nothing he can do for her & simply said "your back's a mess" as he walked out the door leaving her practically in tears. What a jerk. The staff was pretty welcoming and the doctor took time to actually listen to what I was explaining. They checked my concerns carefully and explained things in a way that made sense without rushing. Office was clean and quiet, not too crowded. The nurse also made sure I was comfortable the whole time. It felt like they were trying to help and not just move things along. Writing to honor Dr. Millard, who I had the good fortune of being referred to by a friend he had treated while she was on the Olympic Team. Early September 2019 I suffered herniated discs at L4 and L5 which sent me to emergency at Good Samaritan Hospital, Los Gatos, in excruciating pain, barely able to walk. Due to the severity of my symptoms, the neurosurgeon that saw me that night recommended that I go immediately into surgery for a laminectomy and discectomy to remove pressure created by the ruptured discs on my spinal cord (cauda equina), fearing that if they didn't relieve the pressure I could be paralyzed and lose the use of my legs. Fortunately, my case was borderline enough that I was able to leave the hospital after signing a release of liability, and promise that I would see a neurosurgeon within 12-hours. The next day my GP sent my MRIs to three neurosurgeons and an orthopedic surgeon for consultation. All four of whom wanted me back in the hospital for the surgery that day! Well, the way the "system" works, the surgeon had to send a request to my medical insurance provider for "approval" of the procedures. During which few days I was referred to Dr. Millard, who made room in his schedule to see me almost immediately. While Dr. Millard was testing (my left foot was so weak it was starting to drag on the floor with each step I took with my "walker") he observed that during that 2-3-day period it appeared that I had regained a bit of strength in my left big toe. Dr. Millard said this was "rare" but that he had seen this before, and thus, recommended I get into Stanford Hospital the next day for the cortisone epidural procedure he has expertise in implementing. (Figuring that the above-mentioned surgery would still be an option if the epidural injection of cortisone and other medicines did not work). It was a VERY painful procedure, but it worked! It was a slow recovery at first. Flat on my back in bed for 1-2 weeks while constantly icing the area of the injury, and taking strong anti-inflammatory and pain meds. I was wheelchair-bound for about six weeks, which experience gave me a whole new "perspective" and appreciation for good health, and empathy for those persons wheelchair-bound for life. Went from wheelchair to using a "walker" during the first couple of months. Then physical therapy, and after awhile I was able to walk (again) on my own. At my first post-procedure exam Dr. Millard observed that I had improved so well that I might not need another epidural procedure, which is typically required every six months to a year. Within 2-3 months I was walking normally again. Then longer walks, and by summer 2020, just nine (9) months later, I was hiking again. And by May 2021, 18-months after the injury and Dr. Millard's procedure, I was able to enjoy a full-day of Spring skiing at Mammoth Mountain (that first night in the hospital I was told that I might not ever "walk" again, let alone hike, jog, and ski!). Now, two and a half years later, I am 90% recovered, doing strenuous 5-10 mile hikes in steep hills on weekends, with some jogging, and flat-out running again! Had I had the surgeries that the four surgeons were pushing for I doubt that I would have ever been the "same" as before, again. In fact, I have spoken with others that had those surgeries and the majority said they were worse off, thereafter. So, it is a MIRACLE that I was referred to Dr. Millard, and that his treatment worked so well for me! I appreciate EVERY DAY that I can go about an active life, enjoying the hikes, runs, and activities that I always have. Dr. Millard is The Very Best in his field. I went to dr. Millard for a chronic spinal pain, he did 3 sets of epidural injections to no avail, and actually the procedure (s) itself caused me incredible pain. I found him lacking compassion, very reluctant to give me pain medication, telling me to take Alleve which didn't help at all. From my own research I now know that I have spinal stenosis, the MRI clearly shows that injections are a band aid when a laminectomy is what I needed. My first appt. with the spinal surgeon is not until November 17th, and today Dr. Millard refused me medication. So he leaves me in pain and suffering for 2 months and beyond. Got an epidural with him for nerve back pain. I have a few issues but the procedure he did only addressed that issue. Come back for a follow up visit hoping to get some answers. Some things got better and some got worse and now I was in constant dull pain. Started the follow up by saying it hurts when I bend and he jumps in to say well yah if you are doing things you shouldn't then you won't get better. Didn't ask for follow up like how often does that happen, what else has gotten better, what else is worse. He just went into imaging from the procedure like I care. So I politely listened and waited till he was done, then finished with my pain analysis since he didn't ask. He just says if I'm not putting in the work it won't get better. I had to keep insisting I am going to PT and doing all home workouts, I even signed up for a yoga for healthy back and another for posture because I am desperate to feel better. I asked how long am I not suppose to bend, I have a 6 yr old son who I haven't been able to hold in 4+ months. Then he got pleasant saying this isn't a pity party if you aren't willing to put in the work then you won't get better. He just kept making assumptions and not listening. Yes I yelled back after that. I am in so much pain and just want to get better. He was my last hope to understand this constant pain and how to make it better and I left feeling the worst I have ever felt. Like my quality of life is gone. No one will listen to me about my pain. At least my physical therapist can see and feel the pain I am in so I am not crazy. Also, I maybe have bent once a day and that's suppose to cause me all day pain? He needs to learn how to speech to patients, listening and describing. Yes he said no bending after the procedure which I didn't do for a week. Since he didn't give any time line how was I suppose to know it meant forever. All his recommendations of what not to do after the procedure expired at 5 days so how was I suppose to know I couldn't ever bend again, at least that what it feels like. Do not go to him he takes pictures and videos of his patients during procedures. My back pain was worse after getting back injections. I was trying to get back injections before my heart surgery so I can do PT after my heart surgery so it is easier for my back. He just did not listen to me. I did not want to PT after the injections so I do not wear out the injections. Anyways He does not listen to women. I do not recommend him at all. read more

Thanks for the reply. Do not agree with Dr Millard on the exercise, PT, never said will not do it but in order to perform exercise, PT patient has to come out of high levels of pain? If alleve at recommended dose is prescription strength, then why doctors prescribe muscle relaxants, pain killers, anti-inflammatory etc when the pain levels are high? I strongly felt he could not feel my pain and lack of compassion(not the only one who felt this one more reviewer has the same opinion), unwillingness to treat. I am so grateful I found Dr. Millard when my spinal troubles began more than two decades ago. He is a miracle worker who has kept me out of pain - without surgery - for the large part of those 20+ years. For most of my career, I have worked at a computer all day, every day. Those long hours at the computer have taken their toll on my neck and back. Overwork, new injuries, or the progression of my degenerative disc disease cause the pain to flare. When that happens, Dr. Millard will most often prescribe physical therapy, and if needed, a cortisone shot to relieve chronic or severe pain. It works, and I get better. Dr. Millard's cortisone shots are a miracle. I have had multiple cortisone shots from other doctors and they did nothing. Dr. Millard gets it right the first time, every time. He hates to see patients suffer, so he'll do everything he can to get you into treatment at the first possible opportunity. What I love about Dr. Millard is his infectious can-do spirit. He doesn't treat you like you're a weak, injured person who needs hand-holding. He believes in you, which helps you believe in yourself and your own ability to recover from injury. Dr. Millard is a wonderful physician. He never pushes you to have unnecessary treatment. In fact he will advise you against it if he knows it will not help. He is kind and caring and listens patiently to what I have to say. If you do require an injection, he always ensures that you are comfortable and explains everything in advance. This doctor is similar to others who don't give you five minutes of their time. The first time you meet with him, he'll do a pretty thorough evaulation. But don't expect more than 5 minutes on subsequent visits. He rushes in and out of the exam room, which doesn't let you ask the questions you need to have answered. If you question his choice of treatment, he seems to get annoyed. Also, I do not want to go into detail, but he did a treatment on me which caused something else to start hurting. He got very defensive and told me I must have caused it, which I had not. It was very upsetting to me, because it was very clear: he did the treatment, I had more pain in a place I'd never had pain before. Is that cause and effect, or not? Dr. Millard does not answer questions on the phone. If you try to call him, you need to relay your question to his assistant. But you will be told that to have your question answered, you must make an appointment to see him. For that reason alone, I would not recommend this doctor. read more

He's strictly a first quarter Dr. If you are not a professinal athlete then run away. He will cancel appointments and reschedule only to call and cancel the rescheduled appointments. You will not be important to him and will not recieve a priority. I was him for a spinal issue and it was a nightmare for follow ups. Finally went up to UCSF. # Summary Dr. Millard gave me epidural cortisone shot for chronic leg pain. This gave me bad back pain which has persisted for many months. When I saw him after epidural, he yelled at me, acted aggressively and unprofessionally; asking me to suck up the pain, and never wanted to see me again. That was a really bad experience. I would strongly advise anybody against seeing Dr. Millard. If things don't go well for you (and it is 20% likely), he will treat you badly, and make you feel bad for having pain that his procedure caused! I understand that there are side-effects to these procedures, but his rude, unprofessional and aggressive behavior is deplorable. # My leg pain I went to Dr. Millard to see if anything spine related was causing my leg pain. He ordered an MRI which showed "slight annular bulging with no evident of herniation or stenosis". He was confident that the pain was coming from my lower back, and suggested an epidural. I asked him about side effects and such and he brushed them off saying that I might have some pain in the injection site for a few days (2-5) in the worst case, and he was confident that the pain in my leg would go away. He scheduled me for an epidural for the next day. At this point, he did not tell me ANY other side effects and/or complications despite me asking. # The epidural cortisone shot and new back pain After the epidural, I started having NEW back pain. I became concerned after a week, since I was told the pain in the injection site should subside in 2-5 days. When I saw him two weeks after epidural, he seemed visibly upset and told me "hey man! why are you here? it is normal for pain to not go away for up to three weeks. Did not you read the documents we gave you before the procedure?" Frankly, I had read them, but had missed the clause that in rare cases, the pain can last up to three weeks. During the examination during this appointment, he also pushed my body around instead of gently asking me to turn. I felt shocked, but I went home, understanding my share of the fault here for not reading documents carefully. # The drama in his office I had another appointment 4.5 weeks after epidural. The back pain had gotten worse, and my original leg pain was the same all this time. The DRAMA began when doctor came to see me. I was really not ready to see what unfolded next, and I was dumbstruck. Things inside quotes are what Dr. Millard said verbatim (I had my notebook and was taking notes): * I asked him what we can do about the ongoing pain, he said "Hey man! What can I do? Suck it up and deal with it!". * He became very aggressive and told me everything I was experiencing had been told to me before the procedure. I told him that my pre-procedure office briefing was very short (may be because it was scheduled for the next day), and the only thing I was told is that I might have sore back for 2-5 days. He said I probably have "selective hearing loss". And I know for a fact that nobody in his office told me that my pain might last 4.5 weeks even in rarest of situations. * I told him that he seemed to be lying at this point, since he definitely did not tell me this possible complication. He became even more aggressive, and told me this is not a complication; it is completely normal. He kept insisting that the "procedure went perfectly" and I am just "too much pain focused". He did not seem to accept the fact that I was in pain after 4.5 weeks, because he asked me multiple times "are you really in pain"? * He asked me to "go see another doctor". The only thing he can do "is to give another epidural injection to me". Apparently, he has one hammer, and everything is a nail to him! He started telling me that "95% of his patients get 80 or 90 percent better" (his exact words). I was shocked for a moment, since this sounded like a really bad record. It means, 95% of patients get 85% better, which is about 80% success rate. Meaning 1 in 5 patients had bad pain afterwards. I asked is this what he does to 1 in 5 patients who do not get better: throw them away. He said he was not throwing me away, but I should go see another doctor. * He asked me to ice more often, increase the dosage of Aleve. It seemed like he wanted me out at that time, instead of suggesting something that might actually work for my pain. I kept asking questions patiently. He did say in the end that he was sorry. But it was a rough experience for me hearing these aggressive things from a doctor you trust. # Seeing other doctors I have seen other physiatrists afterwards, and they don't see anything in my MRI that would warrant an epidural injection. Additionally, in Dr. Millard's procedure notes, his preoperative diagnosis was that I have stenosis in my spine, while my MRI specifically says I don't have stenosis. This seems very dishonest, unless it is a mistake on his end. I feel his agenda was to push epidural injection on me despite what the MRI showed. I strongly suggest avoiding Dr. Millard. read more

Dr. Millard came into my life at the perfect time, and truly saved my back. Just for context, I've been incredibly active my entire life; from football and track to snow and water skiing, volleyball, triathlons, etc. Sports and being active are an incredibly important part of my life. In January of 2013, I woke up with a numb right leg, from my lower back to my foot. After multiple consultations, it turned out that I had a series of re-herniations from L3 down to S1, with the L3/L4 bulge being the worst. I tried every alternative treatment recommended to try to avoid surgery, (steroid epidural, acupuncture, two different chiropractors, rolfing, DX-9000 "back stretching machine," etc.). None of it worked, and by September I chose from amongst the three back surgeons I'd consulted (none of them Dr. Millard) and had a Laminectomy. For the first few weeks, things were considerably better, but then something happened (nobody is sure what) and I started experiencing massive pain on the left side of my back in addition to some recurrence on the right. Within weeks it went from pain and numbness to aggressive back spasms that left me unable to sit or stand. I lay on the floor for days and could only drag myself from the floor to the bathroom with a walker. The surgeon who performed the laminectomy was beginning to contemplate additional surgery. A concerned friend introduced me to Dr. Millard on a Saturday and he was able to get me into his office by Tuesday. He went through my history with an incredibly detailed and patient eye, including all of the other Dr.'s notes from my past attempts to relieve the pain prior to surgery as well as post surgery. He recommended a very different set of epidural procedures then what had been administered back in spring of 2013 and was able to get me in for the first epidural procedure that coming Monday. It's now been a little over 2 months since that first visit to his office. I've gone from being in constant, intense pain, back to my active lifestyle. While I'm not yet able to do sports that compress my spine, I'm mostly pain free and am actively swimming with our local masters program and have picked up pilates. Dr. Millard literally saved my back, helped alleviate the most intense pain I've yet experienced, gave me my optimism and lightness back.....all without surgery. I can't recommend a Dr. more highly. Dr Millard is great--highly recommend. I started seeing him last fall for lower back issues and liked his approach...he was straight forward & confident that he could help. Nine months, some PT and a couple rounds of injections later, I'm feeling better than I have in years. I'm quite active and his instructions to keep my core strengthened and centered during activities have been very helpful. On the recommendation of my wife's coworker, I visited Dr. Millard. He is nothing short of incredible. I am 64 years old, and he is the first doctor in my life that I feel really listened to me. There is no better doctor for back related issues than Bob Millard. Bob has helped me go from chronic back pain to playing golf, something I never thought possible. Bob worked with me on a plan to address the pain first, then established a regiment of PT and core related exercises which have left me pain free for over two years now. Ironically, every other back doctor i visited wanted me to have a very invasive lower back surgery where two doctors would operate on me at the same time from the front and back. Several years ago I was involved in a motor vehicle accident and suffered a back injury. The injury and treatment were covered under Workers Compensation. I was first treated in a local emergency room and referred to a back specialist. During the course of this treatment I was referred to Dr. Millard. From the first time meeting him and his staff I noted how professional and caring they were. Dr. Millard took the time to explain his course of treatment and also ordered additional diagnostic tests. Upon reviewing the test results he notified me that I may need surgery and sent me to a Neurologist, which he told me he would trust working on him or any member of his family. I had this surgery and have not had any back issues until last year. In Spring of 2013 I began to have lower leg pain. I re-entered the Workers Compensation system and went back to the Neurologist who performed my back surgery. After several visits he referred me back to Dr. Millard. I met with Dr. Millard in early November of 2013 with all my recent diagnostic tests. Dr. Millard looked over the tests and performed his own physical tests. During the course of his testing he noted irregularities on a MRI and during his manipulative testing, he advised me that it was not my back causing the leg pain, but my hip. He noted that the MRI and tests revealed a severe hip condition. Right then he let me know that because of the hip issue it, he felt that it "may" need to be replaced, but referred me to a hip specialist. That week I met with a Hip Specialist who performed a complete hip replacement the following week. I can tell you that had Dr. Millard not sent me to both specialists I would not have had a positive outcome. It would have been easy for him to perform some treatment for my back, however I have always known him to "do what is right" always in the best interest of his patients and our well being. I know he is well respected in the medical community, insurance world and Workers Comp system, which is not as easy task. I know that he has given me my lift back twice and I continue to live pain free because of his dedication and obvious abilities. read more

i have been seen by Dr. Millard for many years due to my back and neck issues that are mostly caused by playing sports and sports accidents. He has always been forthcoming with the issue and "temporary" or "permanent" solutions. he doesn't recommend surgery if he doesn't see any benefit in it. i have received cortisone injections from Dr. Millard over the years and most of them have worked really well. this last December i went to see him for my arm/shoulder pain he repeated my cervical and shoulder MRI order and immediately warned me about my bruised cervical nerve which was in terrible shape, squeezed to the side and being poked/in serious jeopardy of by small bone particles that would have cut through it with even a simple mis-step or accident. He was kind and compassionate enough to directly contact the neurosurgeon and get me on his already booked schedule so he could see the MRI scans. the C5-C6 discectomy was done on February 26, 2015 and it was the best thing that happened to me! i am so relieved of SO much excruciating pain and i owe all of that to Dr. Millard's diagnosis. he is a knowledgeable, caring, well connected, up-to-date, and well grounded doctor. His office staff is always very responsive and his nurses have always been the best! they are caring and great follow-up-ers! I am so grateful for the great service i have received over the years. unfortunately after i moved to SF it has been tough to go down to San Jose to see him and i should admit that i miss seeing all these friendly faces! I realize that this Doctor may have been short with the other reviewer, however I've been to him a couple times. His knowledge in his specialty is amazing and he does a ton of business. I've recommended him numerous times when quality of care is a concern. Yes there is some wait and yes during your visit you will meet with an assistant first, but this is to maximize the use of his time as he is so in demand. Since I've had two extremely bad experiences with other SOAR spine doctors, I wanted to be sure to let people know that Millard is really one of the good guys. Yes all doctors are rushed these days but Millard has always listened carefully to me. If he thinks I'm done and starts to get up I tell him I need to talk about something else and he sits right back down and takes the time needed, including a quick exam. He knows his stuff and more importantly, he's kind and always positive which really helps when you're in pain. He hasn't become one of the apathetic, arrogant, mean doctors we've all been to. The RWC office is closer but I drive to the San Jose office because he treats me with dignity and respect like we all deserve. read more

I cannot believe it's taken me this long to write this, but Dr. Millard is a life saver. I first saw him in 1999 for an L4/L5 facet joint injury (weigh lifting). He provided excellent expert and practical care, and was fully on board with me keeping up an active life style (I am a former snowboard racer and still ride that way). Through PT, treatment, etc., I 100% recovered. Then, about 8 months ago I needed to see him after I could not take the pain from an apparent back muscle strain. Turns out, the pain is caused by bulging discs in my neck. I'm still in ongoing treatment with Dr. Millard (including an injection he did that is helping [note the procedure is a piece of cake]). I must admit that this injury is challenging, esp. with two small kids, and I am still in a lot of pain, but Dr. Millard is really helping navigate/provide good treatment options. Also, I agree with the other posts. I'm not a professional athlete, but Dr. Millard treats everyone like they are. He also does not usher you in-and-out like other doctors often do. No 10 minute appointment. Finally, great staff (Nicole, others) too. read more

After a year of pain, especially the last five months of nonstop lower back debilitating pain, and after seeing FIVE other doctors, I ended up in Dr. Millard's office. My prayers were answered! Dr Millard is absolutely one of the best doctors I've ever been to, and I've been to many. He explains everything in detail, he takes his time with you and makes you feel comfortable. I received two cortisone shots to my lumbar area, at the facility in Redwood City (Peninsula Procedure Center). Very worth the drive over from San Jose, as this is a great place with amazing nurses. I was nervous, was given meds to help with that, and although I stayed awake (I asked for a small amount) I felt very relaxed. It's been almost four weeks and I am so happy and thankful for Dr. Millard's expert care. Dr. Millard is absolutely one of the best doctors out there. I tend seek for the best because it is important to go to doctors that are experts, compassionate and offer the highest standard of care and attention to patients. I was highly recommended to him by friends that had been to see him for back pain. I went to see him after experiencing excruciating lower back pain. I was literally in tears from the pain. Dr. Millard immediately understood my condition and he was confident that he could help. After 6 months under his care, some PT, an MRI and a couple rounds of cortisone injections later, I'm feeling great again and have returned to light physical activities. I moved from VA to CA a year ago. I am a chronic back pain client and researched the best rehabilitative care practitioners in the area.
