Walk…read moreby any day and you will see old ladies sitting and getting their curls set - as a result I have never had my hair done here, but I have been to the beauty rooms for a pedicure, and, sadly, the lady who does the treatments is obviously more comfortable with her regular clientèle (read: short sighted people). Her selection of gloopy nail varnishes in old lady colours didn't inspire me with confidence, and although she was very chatty, by the end I did wonder if she had cataracts herself because she hardly got any of the varnish on my actual nails, it was mostly on my toes. It wasn't particularly expensive, something in the region of £12, but to be honest I could have done a considerably better job myself.

With a bloke's cut and finish starting at £20 the cost is appropriate for the quality of what you get. If you want the best quality you can choose to have your cut done by one of their most senior art directors and this will only cost you £35. At Toni & Guy you'd spend at least that on a standard cut. They also offer various colour treatments and movements including permanent curling and straightening. As with all places the quality of your cut will depend to a certain extent on your ability to communicate what you want but with such attentive stylists you shouldn't have much trouble in this department. It's definitely a reliable place to sort out your follicular misshapenness.

Big comfy chars, a farmhouse table loaded with newspapers and mags and a laid-back ambience make this a very genial little place. Best of all, noone is peering through the window as you're groomed. An Isle of White native, he actually cared more about my hair than I do and suggested all sort of clever styles and looks that would make me look fabulous. Can't recall my hairdresser's name but he was one of the older guys that work there. He didn't listen to my original request, I went there with my hair in a terrible condition... I wanted an interesting colour technique, instead my hair came out looking brassy and with a discernible dark bar where he'd not quite matched the root highlights to the rest of my hair. The initial cost of £140 completely stunned me, normally I wouldn't complain but at that price I expect excellence. To give the salon their due, they offered to redo my hair FoC, but unfortunately it was with the same guy, again, he didn't really listen to me and seemed to bluff his way out of the bodge-up. I left the salon still unhappy, but couldn't be bothered to take it any further. My story is too long to detail here. It's now Jan 2011 and so reluctant to go to get my roots done because in my experience of Brighton hairdressers I just can't find a fabulous colourist, it doesn't matter how little or how much I pay. PS I had to give 1 star for this review, I suppose the one star would go the the Aveda hair products they use in Shine, they certainly resstored the condition. But the salon itself is awful, no towels to wrap around your head after washing, only something that looks and feels like a dishrag. Their LED/fluorescent lighting is useless especially to judge hair colour under. I'm all for 'green' businesses... but hair salons need bright, clean and flattering lighting. I always arrive on time for my appointments and for some reason or another, they can't do my hair. They either cancel on me last minute, decide not to open on the day of my appointment (without letting me know), or one of the other hairdressers there say that the person I am booked in with isn't here??? I ask if they have time to do it instead, but of course they don't. It's always dirty in there, wires everywhere and that floor is always wet and slippery - nearly tripped over one of the wires. Upon walking in after Christmas, there were 2 stylist there and they both were incredibly rude to me - asking me what I want in this rude manner, then proceeding to just stare at me while I wait. All in all, very unorganised and unprofessional. Can't believe that they'd happily shut the entire salon on a working day ( I usually come in on Tuesday or Friday), just to go swimming or something?? Not ever coming back to this place. Salon owner needs to get a grip.
