First off, the class that's supposed to be for everyone, for all levels, is absolutely advanced…read more The space is really crammed, very tiny, and they fit as many reformers in it as they could, and there's at least one reformer where you have no mirror. So you get this reformer, that is usually the only one left because nobody wants it, and you cannot see anything you're doing. Before you even finished with the class, the people in the class after you stampede their way in, and wait by your reformer while you're still actively working out! Waiting for you to vacate your reformer so they can hop in. It's so uncomfortable. It's like they're waiting by the door like The Walking Dead, and stumbled their way in to hover over you. All in all, I'm not coming back.

I was surprised that reformers were pre-assigned. She introduced herself and was polite, but that's where the positives end. She asked if I had any injuries but didn't ask about my experience level. Class started and it was a horrible experience, poor instruction, poor visibility and lack of attention to the class as a whole. This class was extremely difficult to follow, and I couldn't keep up. The instructor focused almost entirely on correcting one student, while a few others got minimal direction. I wasn't helped or corrected at all, even though I was clearly confused. The instructor's voice was low and unclear, and when she demonstrated movements, she was often blocked by other students. She stayed at the front of the studio, occasionally moving toward the center, but never came to the back where I was. My neck started to hurt from constantly trying to see what she was doing. At one point, the woman next to me asked what she was saying, and I shrugged because I didn't know either.

Well, Amber is totally different and in the best way possible! Sure she will ask me how I am and we will chat a little but she won't let me stop what I'm doing, nope... I guess she doesn't care that I'm going to make salmon for dinner? ;) I've only been working out with her for about 2 weeks at this point (twice a week), and I can ALREADY FEEL & SEE a difference... Not only am I starting to see a bit more definition, but my confidence is heightening! One side effect that has really thrown me off guard though: MY CRAZY INTENSE APPETITE!!! While typically I can eat enough for a family of five, thanks to intense hour-long sessions with Amber, I now can eat enough for a family of 12 and even a little more for the family's pet dog! That being said, it's very important to fuel your hungry muscles with high quality sustenance, especially after such intense workouts. People might think Pilates is for "sissies" and is just another form of boring-ass yoga, but if you take Pilates with Amber, you'll be singing another tune... Or yelling another tune, in your head, because you're too out of breath to talk!

My philosophy is if you're going to work out for an hour you might as well get the most out of it as possible. I had been to a few different Pilates and Lagree classes before this, but one time here told me this is where I'd get the most out of my time. The class is incredibly challenging, but worthwhile. I've only taken class with Mikael and Noelle, and both were top-notch. I mostly try to go to Mikael's classes just because I like the teaching style. I have only ever experienced support and kindness from him, and I came in very unsure of what to do and felt floored after my first workout. I've been to maybe 25 workouts now at this studio and I'm confident in leaving this place an excellent review. It's clear a lot of time and effort was put into making this establishment not only great for workouts, but also an amazing aesthetic and an enjoyable place to be.

Tried Lagree underground today. Worst workout I've ever tried in LA. Mikael the proprietor is very…read moreinflexible. He won't allow walk ins or last minute signups. You MUST make an account online before your first class. You cannot sign up friends. You cannot walk in late to class. You cannot move your spot in the class. He assigns you wherever he likes it seems. Also there is no phone number for the studio and emails are returned to sender. I had never taken Lagree before, so the machine is quite foreign to me. He pointed at colored zones and wiggled handles. He said absolutely no modifying body positions. When the class started I was clearly struggling. His proprietary grip socks don't account for being on your toes so I slid off the machine. He didn't offer help or any guidance. Just told me to leave. Long story short avoid Mikael. Avoid Lagree underground unless you are already familiar with the gear the movements and the class unless you prefer a hostile trainer and no guidance. Long story long; I signed up well in advance of the class and wanted to bring a friend so I used a class pass to reserve a 2nd seat after his online system wouldn't allow me to log out or make her an account, emails were sent back undeliverable and there is no listed phone number. The morning of the class Mikael messages me from his private cell, and his first contact is to tell me he is cancelling the 2nd seat for the class. I ask him please not to and that we will happily pay additional fees and work it out when we arrive. He says no. Make a new account or no class. I tell him fine but this seems hostile and try AGAIN to make my friend an account which isn't possible btw. You cannot make a new account from a laptop only a phone and one account per phone. After much back and forth he sets up the account. I thought it was all a misunderstanding and try to move forward. We show up early to the class. Sign the waivers, buy socks and water (he kept my cc on file btw) he gives the most cursory gesturing explanation of the machines says the class 'moves fast' and is nothing like Pilates. Sets us up on machines in different rows on opposite sides of the room and walks away. The class starts and I am clearly struggling with the number/color ambiguous movement descriptions. He offers no help. After only 5 minutes I get off the machine and go to talk to my friend who is also struggling and also not getting help. Then suddenly he cares. I tell him I'm scared of falling off the machine and need some help and guidance. He says no. He says he can refund me but I can't move to the machine near my friend and can't sit in the room. I must go to the front waiting area or leave. I've taken tons of different classes in LA and all over the globe. I love trying out new classes and testing new ways to enhance my fitness. This was not a remotely positive experience for me. I go to classes for guidance and oversight. I go to share the experience with friends, learn new moves, and have the camaraderie and energy of others all working towards their own goals. This was independent, hostile and frankly embarrassing.

The Vibe: Freedom Begins with Noticing…read more I arrived on the 4th of July with three intentions: Freedom. Sovereignty. Awe. Rumi said, "What you seek is seeking you." Quietly...each one found me. From the second you approach this studio, you can feel an energetic buzz in the air. Fun music. Bright smiles. Three welcoming women had everyone checked in and ready to practice in no time. Field Note: Travel light. Mat, yoga towel, & sweat towel are all provided - and yes, there's onsite parking too. The Guide: Leah Soboroff * Power Flow Before class began, Leah greeted every new student by name. Then came the 1st invitation. She let us know we'd be practicing facing one another today, and invited us to turn toward another yogi, make eye contact, and simply say hello. I'll be honest. Resistance surfaced immediately. Oh, there you are again. (If you know, you know. Thank you, Ram Dass.) So I breathed. Exhaled. And moved with. Leah then reminded us that yoga isn't only an individual practice...it's also communal. Since it was Independence Day, she encouraged us to practice differently. Play. Laugh. Don't take yourself so seriously. Throughout class, she kept returning to one simple invitation: "Step outside and around yourself...and find a new perspective." Waiting... instead of rushing. Looking... instead of assuming. Meeting another person's eyes... instead of staying inside our own world. At one point, I wanted to hurry up & move ahead into the next posture before she cued it. Immediately, Leah gently reminded us to notice our tendency to hurry toward the next thing. I noticed. Oh...there you are again. Breathe in. Breathe out. Move with. (That felt like yoga.) We began lying on our backs, using a block beneath our neck as a gentle massage before slowly flowing into practice. Leah cued Sanskrit first, English second, and offered gaze cues to assist in transitions. One particular sequence stayed with me. Leah didn't just guide the movement. She gave the movement meaning. From balancing on one leg, she invited us to step courageously into the world as we launched into Crescent. Then she called us back: Return home to yourself. And there we were...launched back to balance. Along the way, she sprinkled in wisdom: Stretching the left side - notice your heart, your intuition. Stretching the right - notice the sun, your intellect. Even her assists carried intention. One in Down Dog invited stillness into the body so the mind could settle. Another gently opened my chest in Upward Facing Dog, creating a little more space. By the time we arrived in King Arthur and then Wall Pigeon, I couldn't believe class was already winding down. The Tribe: Practicing Together Facing one another is never my first choice; however, I'm convinced that's why it mattered. * Making eye contact, acknowledging another human being, and recognizing that wisdom exists all around us, not just inside us. Leah reminded us there are "pockets of wisdom" throughout the room. Sometimes all we have to do...is step outside ourselves long enough to notice. Space & Place: The studio carries a fresh, bright, and contemporary energy. Natural light, warm wood floors, clean white walls, curated artwork, sculptural pieces, and fully stocked amenities fill the space. The spacious, light-filled yoga room creates room for free movement in body & mind. The Takeaway Before class, Leah said something that stayed with me. Yoga lets us see our thoughts. Our tendencies. Our patterns. And then... I noticed. Oh...there you are again. Breathe in. Breathe out. Move with. Ahhh... Freedom. To notice. Sovereignty. To choose. Awe. That we can.
