What I'm not a fan of is balancing my erm, generous behind on the small, low stools at Stax, and the waiting for a table because it's so tiny. So when Boondocks's opening was announced, and easy to get to from work, I was really pleased. And then they had to keep pushing the opening back, and I got a bit disappointed, but still planned to go for the soft launch. Finally they announce the soft launch is definitely happening - but not at lunch time. Booo. They've been open a couple of weeks now and are doing lunch service so I excitedly went up. It's a pretty, quirky space and staff are really friendly. The pass is open and you can see back into the kitchen. On the day I was there, Bea herself was expediting (she's certainly a demanding boss!) so I had high hopes. I ordered the ranch chickadee and a small sweet potato fries, and a Coke. The food came really, really quickly - alarmingly quickly. Unfortunately it was to the detriment of the sandwich. The chicken was cooked through and hot, but as you can see from the photo, it was a bit insipid looking. The beef bacon wasn't even warm, which was a shame, and only one small piece. However, my sandwich tasted okay, and the sweet potato fries were probably the best I've had. I didn't like the little plastic baskets - I always feel that they're not cleaned properly, and they're hard to eat out of. We want plates! I put up a little video because the table seriously vibrated every time someone walked by (which they did a lot). It was to the point of distraction, honestly. I hope once the floor 'settles' in that the shake is dampened. I was on my own, and I couldn't get anywhere near finishing my food. It's one of my main criticisms of these kind of places - the sides are best shared, so I waste a fair bit of food. My meal, with a tip, was nearly £20 - holy moly. I do want to go back and try the country fried steak, the biscuits and gravy, and the sloppy joe. But I think I'll have to wait till payday!

Boondocks is located not too far from Old Street underground and very accessible by car and buses that stop near the venue. When you walk in there is someone to greet and seat you. The USA flag on the wall promotes that this is a Soul Food restaurant. But what was really nice was the quirky decor, from old newspaper wall paper to fairy lights to animal horns on the wall. Even the toilet was designed to have a tin bucket for a sink. On paper it sounds nuts but actually works really well in person. As for the pancakes there is a choice of plain, blueberry, strawberry and chocolate chip. I couldn't decide between strawberry and chocolate chip so they allowed me to have half and half. The fresh strawberry's are stewed in a hot sauce then added to the pancakes. It was ok but I wish I had some uncooked strawberry's too as the cooked ones were in a weird place of soft on the outside and hard in the middle. The chocolate chip pancakes again just ok. On the plus note the pancakes did come with fluffy fresh vanilla pod cream. I'm not a pancake person so they didn't taste amazing to me. My friends unfortunately also felt the same way. The staff were very friendly but the service lacked a bit when the waitress didn't offer the drinks menu. I had to ask for it but then she didn't come back to get our orders. In the end I spotted a waiter bringing a bottle of water to another table and asked him to bring one over to us. It's a shame as the bar options looked interesting but I found out not all the drinks options for hot and soft drinks are on the menu. The venue does have wifi, the waitress gave me the password but it wouldn't work properly. I managed to check in on Yelp then it gave up. Overall the venue looks cool with the quirky decor and I always like the idea of an open kitchen so you can check out how the food is being prepared. The other soul food options people were ordering looked interesting but judging on the pancakes alone it was quite disappointing to eat. Let's hope the restaurant does some fine tuning on the food and service at least as it's not a bad place to hang out.

All of the Korean usuals are on the menu but with the common less flavorful approach that London is famous for. Don't come in here expecting a suprisingly delicious meal that you might find in a hole-in-the-wall in Seoul or NYC. We ordered a variety of meats here and when we asked one of the servers to change the grill like you might expect at most decent Korean restraunts she looked at us like we were aliens from another planet and went to go confirm with someone else about the request.

Not much else but rubbery chips to go with, almost always costing over four pounds. *Disclaimer* Chixys Grill however is oh so different. I ordered the Sizzlers Mix Grill Large which consists of: 7 pieces of chicken tikka, 3 lamb chops, 2 kebabs, 3 wings & 2 pieces of chicken and the Quarter Pounder Burger Meal because im just fat like that! Ok so, the chicken tikka pieces were juicy, succulent and tender, perfect starter to prepare me for the lamb chops. Lamb Chops, oh my you beauties, these were proper tasty, meaty chops that I just could not get enough off, in fact I wish there were more than three! Manna Dew makes a mean flat white, amongst the typical choices of your neighbourhood coffee place. Their sandwiches are well seasoned, flavourful and fresh. There is great care put into the sandwiches, which are warmed up nicely before being served. Yes, if you love gluten-rich bread, it will not taste as hearty, but I've frequently found myself enjoying a bite at Manna Dew because it tastes so good! For dessert, there are a number of amazing gluten-free treats. The macarons taste delightful, creamy middle, crunchy outside and a lasting flavour of natural vanilla inside. The brownies are superior to most of the brownies I usually eat - fudgy, but not messy, with great flavour and mouth feel. The owner truly cares and loves the operation, and it shows in the cleanliness, the presentation, and the amazing food. I find myself coming back here frequently, and have always had an incredible experience. Highly recommended.

Grill Shack straddles the boundary between fast food and a family friendly/casual restaurant with table service. Indeed on the Tuesday night there were several waiters milling around, however, unlike practically every other restaurant, these waiters do not take orders or wait on tables. Instead these friendly waiters where there to explain "the concept." And it's a 4 step process at that! First, you are seated by a hostess and given menus. Second, you then order either at the counter, or at a kiosk, or on their iphone app---the later was still being worked on. Third you pick up your drinks and/or sauces. Lastly, (and only a few minutes later) your food appears. Maybe these waiters do more than explain the concept after-all. I'm still not bought into the wonky concept, however, I did like the prices.... Speaking of which, Grill Shack is remarkably affordable, Try £4.95 for a burger or about 9 quid for a rump steak with fries. There was also a tasty looking 1/2 chicken for just under £8. That's practically fast food prices but with the quality you'd expect at more up-market chain like Byron. Soft drinks come in under 2 quid and come with 1 free refill. The food was actually good especially considering the price. My burger came on a nice brioche bun (I ordered bacon as an extra). It was cooked medium and was on par with what I've had at GBK and Byron. However, Grill Shack is much much quicker and a bit cheaper. They also have ice cream cookie sandwiches and carrot cake for dessert. All in, despite the unusual ordering system (it's never great when they have to have staff explain how to order food in a restaurant) I liked my experience at Grill Shack and would be back. I'm a big fan of the Honest Burgers chain. Pretty much their entire food menu is gluten-free; all you need to do is swap out a regular bun for a gluten-free one. The prices are also really reasonable, especially for London. My food cost a little more than it would have done compared to my local Honest Burgers in Manchester. The restaurant is over two floors, the main seating area is downstairs however, on the ground level, there is a large bar with bar-style seating - ideal for a quick lunch, and there is also an outdoor seating area - ideal once in a blue moon when we get some half decent weather in this country. I did find it unusual to hear that they are closed on Sundays, although there are plenty of other Honest Burgers restaurants within walking distance as an alternative. They were quiet on my visit, though, so perhaps this location appeals more to office workers looking to grab a quick lunch than typical diners. They do add a service charge onto the bill here; however, this is the case at all other Honest restaurants and pretty much everywhere in London - a practice I don't agree with, as I feel it should be the customer's to decide how much they want to tip - if at all! The food was excellent. I had the gluten-free Buffalo chicken burger, which was delicious. The flavours worked perfectly together--the heat of the buffalo sauce balanced beautifully with the coolness of the ranch mayo with the American cheese. The buttermilk fried chicken patty was very good, too--thick, juicy, and not at all dry--served on a bed of crisp lettuce. As far as chicken burgers go, this is one of Honest's best, coming in second only to the previous local special in Liverpool. The cleanliness of the restaurant could certainly be better - I had to wipe some crumbs off the table, and I was given a pot to put my sauces in, which was dirty. My server was nice enough, but again, I feel the service is better at their Northern locations in Manchester and Liverpool. 4* - While it might not have been the best dining experience I had during my time in London, it was certainly the best value for money, despite issues with cleanliness, my food was good and I would return for sure.
