Went to Jeremy a few times last year based on a slick website and lots of 5 star reviews. Given all the 5 star reviews I don't feel bad providing a lower one. I've only been to a few acupuncturist before, and had a few "somatic acupuncture" sessions. I chose this modality because I actually had a few very good experiences with somatic emotional reexperincing type of therapies, guided meditations by trained therapists that also do bodywork. Yes its a little new age, but I had a few done at a treatment center in Arizona once and wanted to find someone in the Bay Area that might be able to approximate. Jeremy asked me a few very generic questions during a session that were directed at "getting to the source" (or something). He also prescribed some chinese herbs without really telling me what was in them, or what they did, at a level of scientific understanding that I trusted. "Calming wind" is not a scientifically valid therapeutic mechanism -- and although I do believe many of the herbs used in chinese medicine ARE of therapeutic value, it's unclear to me why in this day and age (and we certainly should not accept) practitioners use these antiquated metaphors. The acupuncture was on the expensive side and of unclear benefit to my insomnia. The somatic acupuncutre was near-uesless and all I could think about was "are you kidding me" when I heard the series of questions. And this is coming from someone who has received significant benefit from trained psychiatrists, Clinical Psychologists, and others. FInally, he had a really offputting and disturbing smugness/arrogance, wasn't particularly friendly, and I just didn't trust him I'm sorry to say (though he gave me no particular reason not to besides the above). **Update** Jeremy graciously offered to refund my money after I posted my review, which I appreciated (and most certainly did not expect, given that I wrote this review 9 months after service after receiving a marketing email from him). And I should stress that this review was specifically about the Somatic Acupuncture specialty he markets, NOT general acupuncutre which he also offers. While I won't be removing my negative review as he requested after I accepted his refund offer, as I find that unambigiously ethically dubious, I hope this update provides some clarity.** read more

I found Jeremy here on Yelp (thanks Yelpies!) and am so impressed w him. My first appointment I was in TERRIBLE longterm pain in several places in my body (not to mention stiff and tense). Over the course of a few weeks of twice weekly treatments, I am now in NO pain, and my stiffness has been significantly reduced. Jeremy is so smart, and knows his business. I tried 3 other acupuncturists in SF before finding Jeremy; two were ineffectual and one was not clean (yuck!). You will know when he puts the first needle in that you are in the presence of a master healer. Hot tip: don't try driving there; parking sucks in that 'hood. Saw him as a groupon customer (for a tui na massage) and the price was too high for the service that I received. If I paid full price, I would have been very unhappy. For people who have never had an actual tui na or other types of deep tissue massage it would have been fine. When asked what he was actually doing when I felt his fingers just short of a pressure point, he said that his style was a mix of different types of massage. OK. Not only is Jeremy a fellow Badger alum, which would have been worth the first two stars from me, but he is an amazing, healing and calming presence. I've only been to one session (for a groupon) but am definitely going back - for psoas and IT band issues in my training and releasing accumulated stress. I've had therapy and acupuncture separately- my session with Jeremy was the best of both- visualization and energy work combined with acupuncture and deep tissue massage work. I felt lighter than I have in as long as I can remember after my session- and loved that he combined the letting go of old emotional/mind patterns with their release physically. At 34 weeks pregnant and only 6 weeks to go, you would think I could manage to ignore the pain and suffering I was experiencing since around 22 weeks just a little longer...but I finally listened to my doctor after every other obvious treatment (tylenol, staying off my feet, support belts) to eliminate the Severe Symphysis Pubic Dysfunction (SPD) and Belly pains (from what ended up being 5 finger ab separation-"diastasis recti") failed to suffice....and check out acupuncture for the first time in my life. What did I have to lose? I was desperate for any improvement as 6 more weeks seemed like an eternity! I went to the first available acupuncturist I could find within my insurance network and after 1 visit, I didn't feel any improvement, nor did I expect to after 1 session, but since I was desperate, I thought I might as double down and try another acupuncturist the same week that a friend recommended and up my chances. This visit was with the incredible Jeremy Rothenberg. On our first meeting, he allowed ample time to listen to my concerns and issues and was genuinely anxious to do everything he could to rid me of my ailments right then and there. After that first session with him, it was like "MAGIC!" I exclaimed as I got up from his acupuncture table and felt NO pain instantly. It seemed impossible since my pain was so severe, I was mystified and amazed at the same time. The pain reappeared later that day but to have been relieved of it for even hours, was simply a miracle. I quickly booked up Jeremy's calendar and returned as often as I could for these miraculous sessions and with each session, the absence of pain grew longer and before I knew it, I delivered my healthy baby boy (with a much easier delivery than my first which I wouldn't be surprised is also a result of my acupuncture treatments with Jeremy). Thankfully, after the birth, my SPD and belly aches disappeared immediately and entirely, but once I am out of the newborn phase and more independent, I plan to return to Jeremy's office to maintain my overall good health and I recommend him to everyone I can in the meantime! I was fortunate to come across Jeremy through a close friend referral who just like me thinks of him highly. I have had so far a couple of sessions where we discussed on health strategies and practical ways to get there. And more importantly had acupuncture for the first time which at first did not seem like anything out of the ordinary was happening. But on the second session having come to it with a heavy sinus congestion, he managed to temporary clear it up as well as providing a very noticeably deep amount of relaxation during a stressful moment I was going through. Jeremy is genuinely interested in how I'm feeling and takes excellent notes, remembers things I've said, and pays attention overall. The treatments so far have been a combination of talking/listening, pulse-studying, massage, cupping, accupuncture, and chinese herbs. I am curiously fascinated by the various treatments, but not anxious because of my relaxed trust in Jeremy's desire and ability to take good care of me. I highly recommend anyone to simply reach out to Jeremy to first share what ailment/symptoms you may have and really listen to how he responds. For me, it was inspiring and intriguing to listen to him and it made me feel proactive and hopeful in pursuing a remedy for my symptoms vs allowing myself to continue with the discomfort passively as I have been for so long. I was brought up entirely on western medicine, but have been seeking alternate options and I really connected with Jeremy's relaxed and peaceful demeanor and the way he sees and approaches treatment. I felt like I was no longer alone in dealing with my pain and discomfort and that I really had someone by my side who cared and can affect positive change in ways I never knew about relative to the western approach of in and out 10 minute office visits and prescription of pain meds to mask the pain, but not address the root cause. Three different acupuncturists in two different states were not able to provide the results I've experienced with Jeremy. I really can't say enough wonderful things about him. Because my health struggles are menstrual in nature, I wasn't sure if I would really feel comfortable talking with a man about it. I am happy to report that Jeremy is gentle, attentive, and sensitive to the fears and anxieties that come with chronic illness. During our sessions together he is entirely present, listening to me on all levels - spoken and unspoken. His diagnostic instinct is spot on, getting to effective courses of treatment from day one. I recently visited Dr. Rothenberg for some tightness in the chest. As a 26 year old, I was quite scared going in. After discussing my diet, habits, and work schedule, it would seem like stress was the culprit. I received an acupuncture treatment and cupping. Dr. Rothenberg was very caring and gentle. Had my first ever acupuncture treatment today and couldn't be more pleased. I've suffered from sciatic pain for over a year and been in PT, 3 ortho offices, and seen a chiropractor. After my appointment today is the least pain I've felt in months. Jeremy has exceptional bedside manner, and clearly knows his stuff to get results. His first appointment includes a full discussion of your medical history, and a thorough evaluation as well as (at least in my case) a brief Chinese massage targeting pressure points. Jeremy's method of treatment is comprehensive. Chinese medicine looks at the body as a whole, and he has been instumental in healing/resolving medical issues which have not only pagued me for years, but made my western GP just scratch his head and order a bunch of tests. (all inconclusive) Im a skeptical person. I didnt put too much faith in Chinese medicine, mainly because of how it's been co-opted in the west by a bunch of new-age know-nothings. Jeremy is a true healer. Although Eastern medicine was literally foreign to me prior to visiting Jeremy, the results speak for themselves. I left my first acupuncture session totally relaxed and focused, a feeling that stayed for about a month. In my second session, he incorporated more pulse reading and energy work that was, in one hyphenated word, MIND-BLOWING. Sorry I didn't warn you about the all caps, but any problems you might have with them, you can probably go to Jeremy and he'll likely be able to cure you. I think that Jeremy is fantastic. I first went to him to treat severe back pain, which I've had on and off for nearly 25 years, and for which Western medicine (including physical therapists) has never been very helpful. He gave me immediate and sustained relief. Since that episode of back pain, he has treated me for a few other issues, some of which he healed over the course of several sessions, one of which he literally healed in one session. Jeremy also takes a lot of time to ask about symptoms, improvements since the last treatment, other factors that may be affecting problem areas, and never seems in a rush during these dialogues. He is very good at explaining his methods, meridians, etc., in a way that makes sense to my very Western way of thinking. I am the son and grandson of doctors and have great respect for MDs and had a nearly innate skepticism of acupuncture. No longer. Jeremy's treatments work, and he is a wonderful person to boot. Jeremy is amazing and supportive. I had a cough that wouldnt let me breathe! Months of an inhaler and Advair and antibiotics and then another cold hit and I was losing hope. After one treatment I didnt need the inhaler and the herbs and treatments just kept me on the upward trajectory. Just had first appointment and I feel that Jeremy can definitely help me. I've been to acupuncturists before and it took me a little while to change back into the "eastern" way of thinking and after talking with Jeremy it reminded me of how western society in it self causes so many health problems. He seems very deep and knowledgable and seems willing to teach. The best at inserting needles I have seen, could not even feel them. One of the first places he touched he asked if it hurt but the way he said it he already knew it was painful in that spot, definitely knows what he's doing. I went to Jeremy as a result of purchasing a Groupon (first session in Jan 2011). Needless to say, I've continued my sessions with him. He has such a calm and inviting presence that it's easy to tell him almost everything. I've seen other acupuncturists and can say his approach is quite different and much more effective. This is my second review of Jeremy Rothenberg. It has been almost one year since I started the acupuncture treatments with Jeremy. We've now settled into regularly scheduled treatments every 2 weeks. My weight is still down, my pain level is still extremely low. The fog I was in from all the pain meds taken over the years is gone. No longer do I rely on popping a pill to ease my pain. As long as I watch my diet, am careful with my body movements and realize that there are limits, my life is much different than before I started. WOW. Jeremy is amazing. He has a calming, healing energy and knew exactly what to do to alleviate my acute back pain in two simple visits. (the pain was greatly reduced after the first visit, and completely gone after the second.)
