Years ago, we adopted a mother cat and her kitten. Mother(Gracie) at the time was 10 months old and…read morethe kitten(Chloe) was 8 weeks. They were both rescue kitties. Fast forward to 10 years later. Chloe got sick and later found out she was filled with cancer and we had to put her down. A few months went by and Gracie was acting depressed and not eating. We figured she was lonely so we sought out another cat for Gracie. We read about the Humane Society of the Nature Coast and decided to go there even though it was 30 miles from our house. We had looked online before going to see what was available. We picked out 4 cats to look at. We were looking for an older cat as we didn't want to go through the whole kitten stage. So when we got there we were amazed at the facility. It was clean. The cats were kept in rooms with multiple cats, plenty of toys, cat towers, and a cat door heading to a screened in patio they called Catios. In the Catios there were shelves all along the screened area(they also had wire so they couldn't get out of the screen) the cats could sit and look outside and get fresh air. We looked at all of the cats we had picked out and had settled on one. On our way to tell them which one we had picked, we walked by this room that had a quarantine sign on it. Evidently the cats in that room had been exposed to ring worms. As we walked by, this scrawny little kitty was sitting by the door looking out the window. Doors had full length glass in them. We inquired about the room and they told us that if we entered that room we could not go into any other room afterwards. We agreed and went in and looked at and interacted with one kitty. They had named her Turtle Sundae. She was a Patch Tabby and had the colors of a turtle candy and a vanilla and chocolate sundae. She was four years old and exactly what we wanted. We decided on the way out that we didn't want to name her Turtle Sundae, so we dropped the Sundae and left her as Turtle. So this was a weekend and they said we could pick her up on Monday. The adoption process was so simple. Turtle had all of her shots and was spade. I picked her up on Monday and the adoption process only took about 30 minutes. The $75.00 adoption price was reasonable. I put Turtle in her carrier and out the door we went. On the way home, I stopped at the vet and had Turtle checked out per the agreement I signed at the facility. Doctor said she was in great shape and all was good. Fast forward to 6 months later. Turtle has turned into a wonderful companion. To sum it all up. Humane Society of the Nature Coast is exactly what it says. They are Humane, the staff is outstanding, the facility is clean, the adoption process was painless, and the price was reasonable. I have recommended this place to several people. I would use them again. This is truly a 5 star place and experience.

But my wife and I fell in love with a pup there on Christmas Eve but couldn't adopt that exact day. So filled out an application gave them our current dogs information including not being fixed. So we made a meet and greet appointment with our current doggo and the potential new addition two days later. We arrive on time only to be told we cannot do the meet and greet and cannot adopt because the dog at the shelter because he was recently fixed and won't be sterile for another 6 weeks. I was like ok cool so we have to come back in 6 weeks to do it then because we still want that dog. Nope. Said they didn't want the dogs to mate and create more puppies which I do understand to an extent. Just super disappointing they were not willing to work with us as we are trying to rescue a dog to a very good home to be spoiled at. And never called us to let us know because my wife and I made ourselves available for the next available meet and greet appointment. Phone numbers and emails were on the application and feel like this could've been handled more professionally. End of the day the dog they held for us and we intended on taking home today will unfortunately be sleeping at a shelter until another family falls in love with him as well.

This was such a fantastic experience!…read more My husband is a fox lover and I wanted to find a place where we could interact with them while contributing to a worthwhile organization. After doing some research, I was so excited to find Fox Tales Sanctuary, located only 2 hours away from Orlando. You can book a visitation by emailing Robyn directly and everything after that is super easy. Tours are available on Monday-Wednesday, and every other Saturday. Saturday bookings can fill up fast and sometimes you might get paired with other visitors. On our day, we were paired with another couple. The tour was amazing! Robyn was a wonderful guide and advocate for the foxes and provides a wonderful life for them. It's recommended to bring your own eggs (as many as you want) as the foxes love eggs and will take them from you to hide away and bury. The important thing to note is that this is a not a petting zoo and is more of an educational tour where you get the opportunity to interact with foxes on their terms. Some foxes are more curious and will come to you for eggs, but some might avoid you and be unwilling to approach at all. Either way, it was such a thrill to see such adorable foxes in such close proximity. Most of the foxes are either rescued from fox fur farms or were surrendered by owners who couldn't properly care for their foxes; it was stressed to us that these foxes (even the ones purchased as pets) are not fully domesticated and require a lot of specialized care to accommodate their natural instincts and behaviors. However, due to their experience with, exposure to, and dependence on humans prior to coming to the sanctuary, these foxes can't survive in the wild, so Fox Tales steps in to provide a quality life for these animals. They only have one actual wild fox, Johnny, that was taken from his mother by humans and was found to be unable to adapt back to the wild. He's a very handsome fella and serves officially as an Ambassador Fox for Florida Fish & Wildlife as what NOT to do when encountering a wild fox. On the actual tour, we visited 3 different fox runs where we sat and let the foxes approach us at their comfort level (eggs were a great motivator here). We also saw the foxes that are not as visitor-familiar in their enclosures and didn't interact as openly with them, but were able to give them eggs and treats. The tour lasted about 2 hours. In addition to the fox runs and habitats, they have a gift shop and outhouse available for visitors. The gift shop had so many cute souvenirs and a sink to wash your hands before leaving. The outhouse was very clean and had a camping toilet/port-a-potty, as well as another sink. This was one of the best animal experiences I've ever had and I highly recommend supporting Fox Tales. The price for the tour was super reasonable at $25pp. They have tons of other ways you can support the foxes through volunteering, donations, and more. Pro-Tips: Close-toed shoes and long pants are recommended. Leave bags in the car or attached to your body as foxes may steal or pee on stuff they want to claim. Cash is preferred, but they also accept Venmo, Zelle, and CashApp.

I went to the Humane Society of Pasco off of Harmon three times with intentions to adopt a dog…read more Three times I went they were closed and I went several more times and they were still closed even though the sign said they were open, but they were closed. So I happen to just cut through Harmon on my way to Publix and saw they were open. I went inside and I still wanted another dog. They had several dogs that I was interested in and there was a dachshund that was a little bit older, but I was very interested in him because he was a dapple and I love dapples. When I met the dog, it was like we were made for each other. But when I told the people at the counter, I was interested in adopting the dog right then, they told me they would put me on a waiting list because there were six other people in line for this dog. They could have told me this to begin with and not got my hopes up. So once again, I left without a dog. I went back two more times and I strictly told them no Pitbulls and no pitbull mixes and that's all they had but they brought me out and showed me the dogs. They may be very nice people and they care about their animals, but they need to be a little bit more informative, and upfront when people make requests. And they need to open when they're supposed to be open. I ended up getting two miniature dachshunds from a breeder friend and I am very happy with them. One is a dapple and the other is red so I'm extremely happy. But as far as the Humane Society on Harmon, I don't recommend them. Sorry, but that's how I feel.
