One of my sub-goals of that trip was trying basically as many pastel de nata as I possibly could, so seeing a place on our way up to the castle by foot (just after the free elevator), obviously I had to stop and try theirs. By this point I'd tried a whole bunch already, so I can say, out of all of them, the *crust* was really good, possibly among the best I'd had. Perfectly flaky, crispy, flavorful crust, inside of which was totally disappointing filling, a filling that was mostly sugary rather than eggy, and was quite drippy once you start eating it. I can't speak to any of their other pastries, though, we were just here to taste-test all the pastel de nata we could find. :D (If I were back in the area, I'd totally come back to try some of their other, more interesting things.)

So here's the interesting thing - this was one of *many* places to get pastel de nata that made to…read moremultiple lists of places you had to stop, which meant I obviously had to stop at as many of them as possible over the course of the couple weeks I was in Portugal, a couple months ago, in both Porto and Lisbon (also to a lesser extent, Coimbra). This means I can now say who made them best, and more importantly, why. The interesting thing is, I didn't think the pastel de nata here were particularly great, on any dimension - fairly flimsy, doughy crust, with a pudding-like, drippy filling that was too sweet and not quite eggy enough. Don't get me wrong, I'd still eat them any time someone offered, they were still tasty, you just have a ton of options nearby, some of them notably better than the ones here. I also tried one of their fancy-looking cookies, which definitely looked fancier than it tasted. Was just a cookie. Dessert-wise I was unimpressed. They were also always fairly busy, which made ordering feel a bit rushed. So why am I still giving this bakery 5 stars, and why did I come back here a couple more times, including to get food to-go the morning we left, to get food to take on the plane with us? For exactly one reason, and it's a weird one: oddly enough, the samosas here are the best samosas I've ever had, and by a wide margin. You'd think the best samosas ever would come from an Indian restaurant or bakery, but nope, they're here. The other small savory food items we tried were also pretty good, but the samosas are the juiciest, meatiest, most perfectly bursting with spices samosas I've had. Who knew? They also had pretty solid espresso and pretty solid free-squeezed orange juice, but those aren't hard to find in Portugal (I miss seeing inexpensive fresh squeezed OJ all over the city... especially *truly* fresh squeezed, to order, from whole oranges. Portuguese OJ definitely was the best. Though obviously not *better* than other places you can get the same thing around - probably indeed the same oranges. Definitely better than anywhere you can get fresh OJ for a few bucks in the US, though, if you can find such a place. :p)

The crust on the pastel de natas here are flaky and crisp, which is what I initially expected. The custard is smooth and not too sweet. They run 1.60 euros/piece. There's table service, fast counter, and original counter. Table service had a line on a weekday afternoon, but the other two options did not. Shout out to the staff for being quick and efficient at filling the tables and helping people locate their ideal spots. There is plenty of seating both inside the building and outside. The restaurant walls are adorned with beautifully designed blue tiles which adds to the warming and communal theme. Now to start, the pastel de nata here is pretty amazing. First, you have the multiple layers and crunchy, crispy texture from the buttery crust. Then you have the delicately whipped sweet custard which practically melts in your mouth. What takes this to the next level is adding a punch of cinnamon on top, which gives it a punch of warmth and is satisfying on the palate. To mention the mango milkshake, it was ok but I would call out that it didn't have much sweetness to it as I assume the mangos used were not fully ripe. That would be the one piece of feedback but otherwise, it tastes very bright and refreshing which is perfect for a hot Lisbon day. We found Ground Burger nearby and I have to say, I'm glad we did! This was one of the best burgers I've ever had, anywhere. I got the Ground Burger which came with cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion, and the GB sauce. The beef was amazing, all the toppings were so well balanced, and the brioche bun was excellent. Whatever was in the sauce really added a lot to it too. The fries had a nice little addition of rosemary which complemented them nicely. While these burgers are expensive, they're up there with the best burger I've had. So I think it's definitely worth it!
