Had my first visit here on a Friday evening this past August. We met a few of our friends here to…read moreenjoy a night out with some beer, food, and live music. I have previously heard of Truss and seen them around the community at different events, but was excited to finally try them at their storefront. Truss Brewing Company is located in Pleasant Hills, just off of Route 51. This building has been other businesses throughout the years before Truss took over. It is clearly marked and easy to locate. There is a private parking lot in the rear, but they will have it closed off and filled with tables during the summer months. However, there are other lots and parking options surrounding the building along Old Clairton if this is the case when you visit. We arrived just after 7:00, and the place was packed! They had the back parking lot closed off for seating, but luckily we found a spot right in front. There is no indoor seating here, as they advertise the business to be take-out only. Therefore, you can order online or through some delivery services if you truly are taking the order to-go. However, if you are "dining in," you can order at the counter inside. They will give you an order number, and then call the order number outside for you to come retrieve. First, we made our way inside to place an order. There was a decent line that went out the door, but we made it through that in about 10 minutes. Ordering was straight-forward, as the menu is not terribly long. For the beers, there were some different size options. Also, they sold reusable cans, crowlers, growlers, and mini kegs that can be brought back and refilled. In addition to the made-to-order food and beer, there are some snacks, grocery items, non-alcoholic drinks, and merchandise all for sale. After placing our order, we made our way to the back parking lot to find some seating. As stated, there was a live band performing and the place was pretty full. However, we did manage to get a table. There were picnic-style tables, as well as some bar-height seating. I also saw some patrons bring their own lawn chairs, so that is an option as well! The atmosphere outside was very lively. The music was good, there were a lot of groups socializing and having a good time, and there were some yard games set up on the one side of the lot. Definitely a nice spot to bring the family or meet up with some friends if the weather is nice. The wait from ordering to when we got our food was about 30 minutes. I know the food is prepared in-house, and is not generic restaurant pre-made-type food, so this is reasonable considering that. My fiance and I split a few dishes between us. We ordered the Chilled Colossal Shrimp, the Big Fat "Wings," and the Wood Fries Parm Crusted. The Chilled Colossal Shrimp came with 5 and a nice dipping sauce. I love cold shrimp, so this was my favorite dish. The Big Fat "Wings" are chicken drumsticks prepared like wings. Since it is a different cut, you get a lot of meat for your money. We ordered them with the buffalo sauce on the side as well. They were tasty, and again, a great way to make your dollar stretch for a lot of meat! The Wood Fries Parm Crusted are unique, as they are very thick cut. It is probably over a whole potato's worth of fries, so plenty to share. My fiance loves thick-cut fries like this, so he thought these were great. We enjoyed the food overall! For my beer, I ordered the Mortar, which is an American Brown Ale. I usually prefer a brown/red/amber-type of pour, so this was right up my alley. It was a nice sipper to have throughout the night. In terms of value, I think some items have a much better value than others. Specifically, I thought the fries and the chicken were very much worth the money. I personally did not order a pizza this trip, but some of those seemed to be slightly expensive to me personally. Despite that, you can make it worth your dollar depending on what you order and what you are looking for most. Since this place is take-out only, I truly did not have a ton of interaction with the staff, except for when I put my order in. I had no issues regarding this, though I feel as though I did not have enough interaction to make a comment on this aspect of the trip either way. Likely due to all of the seating being outside, the business is dog-friendly! We brought our dog, and he enjoyed socializing with the patrons and many other dogs who were there as well. This was a great place to spend a sunny August evening! I enjoyed the beer, food, and atmosphere at Truss. We loved the live music, and learned on this trip that they regularly hold a trivia night and other events as well. The only downside is that this experience is seasonal, and weather-dependent. However, the food and beer are available year-round, so you can give that a try anytime. I would recommend checking this place out with the warmer months quickly approaching!

The P-Bar is my hometown bar, and I have been coming here for longer than I can remember. My…read morefriends and I would come in high school on Thursdays for $1 Burger Nights (no longer around, RIP), and now we come to enjoy some drinks on the patio and hang out. The bar is located in a strip of stores along Old Clairton Road, just off of route 51. There is some parking in the front that is shared with all the other businesses, and then a parking lot across Old Clairton that gets used at night when the businesses that it is for are closed. Additionally, there is a private lot for the bar in the back, and parking at the Bill Green Shopping Center just a little ways down the road (sidewalks from Bill Green to the bar entrance). Due to a fire that occurred here a few years ago, the entire place has recently been remodeled and reoriented from how it was originally. The bar is now in the back, and the main dining room is in the front. There is also a great patio and outdoor space with open air seating, as well as some area under a porch. Everything is new, clean, and modern as a result of the remodel. On this visit, we came to hang out on a Saturday evening. It was raining, so we had to get a table inside. It was karaoke night, as they have each Saturday, so we got to take in the sights and sounds of several performers. Since we were there later in the evening, we just ordered appetizers to much on along with our drinks. I got the Fiesta Street Corn Dip. It was a great value for the price, and there was a ton to go around the whole table. I also sipped on a Summer Shandy from their seasonal draft list. Overall, the food menu has a decent selection, all at very reasonable prices. The draft list did not have any red or brown ales on it, but there was still a fair selection of drinks. The ladies who came around to our table were pleasant and helpful. It was rather crowded, but there would be times we would not see a server for extended periods of time. I do not think it helped that our table was tucked back in a corner, but wish we would have been visited on a somewhat more frequent basis to put additional orders in. I always have a good time at the P-Bar, and enjoy coming here. Especially in the summer, it is an ideal place to hang out and catch up with friends. And likely, if you are from the area, you will run into several people you know. I did not have their breakfast this time, but the breakfast they have on the weekends is worth a try as well!

Growing up in the area, I have had…read moreYoli's several times at different events or by take-out, but this was my first time dining in at the restaurant. Yoli's Cucina and Crafthouse is located at the intersection of State Route 885 and Payne Hill Road. The building has been other restaurants in the past, but Yoli's has occupied the space for nearly a decade. It is very easy to locate from the road. There is a private parking lot as well. This is not a heavy business/commercial area, so it's very easy to park and navigate into the restaurant. My visit was on a Friday night this past August. We chose to come after seeing a Facebook post about "Friday Night Lights," which was extended hours on select Friday nights when the TJ High School Football Team was playing at home. My family and I attended the game, and usually will try to find a pizza place to go to afterwards. Since we saw the post for this, we decided to give it a try. We left the football game a little early, and arrived to the restaurant around 9:15 PM. Since the game was barely over, we were one of the first few groups in. The longer we were there, the more people filtered in from the game. It was not completely full though, so no problem getting a seat at a table or the bar. There are plenty of seating options. The dining room has many four-top tables, some booths, and bar-height four-tops surrounding the bar. Of course, there are bar seats. In the back, there are also several longer tables. I assume this room can be rented out and/or reserved, but on this night they had it open for dine-in. As advertised on Facebook, there was a special menu for this after-hours time. It was a limited menu with $10 Pizzas, $10 Yoli Rolis, and $3 White Claws and Domestic Bottles, plus other items. We were not given regular menus, but instead papers that had the limited menu printed. It listed all of the different items, however, it had no descriptions. This was an issue for us, since we were not regulars of the restaurant. Our server acted really strange about this honestly, and would not give us a regular menu to look at when we requested it for the descriptions specifically. So instead, we had to literally ask her what was in every single sandwich, what all of the toppings available for the pizzas were, and any other specifics about any items. I understand in theory why they made the menu like this, but it should have included item descriptions. It makes sense that they do not want customers trying to order off of the regular menu, since they are not serving everything. But, eliminating descriptions is an issue. This was the first "Friday Night Lights" of the season, so it is possible that this improved for other ones moving forward. Following that confusion about the menu, we placed our orders. Our food was ready in about 25 minutes. My mom and I split an 8-Cut Mushroom Pizza. My fiancé ordered The Baller, which was a half-size meatball hoagie with marinara sauce and melted provonello cheese. My dad ordered The Drunk Fish, which was a half-size Yuengling battered haddock with melted provonello cheese, house greens, and house tartar. Both sandwiches came with fries. We each enjoyed our food. The pizza was more than enough for the two of us, and we even had some leftover to enjoy the next day. It is not super thick, but it is not a New York slice, either. A good in-between. Both of the sandwiches were okay, but the portions with the fries were generous. I personally liked the fries. Overall, we had no real complaints about the meal. Everything came out in a timely manner and prepared well. The value of our meal on this night was great. Some of us got some drinks, but for the food it was only $30 before tax. Hard to beat that, especially considering it was four adults. I appreciate them having these specials! The staff here was average, all considering. As detailed, not being able to see the descriptions for the menu items was really bizarre, and unhelpful from a customer service perspective. Otherwise, we had no issues with the service or our waitress. I am glad I got the chance to dine in at Yoli's! As stated, I have had their pizza many times, but never dined in. We had a positive experience overall, but as detailed there are some areas for improvement, specifically relating to the limited menu/after hours events. I hope they continue to have success with these, and improve on them for the future. In an area with very few locally-owned restaurants, it is nice that Yoli's is around and continues to be successful. I hope to come back to try more of their menu on a typical business day, especially the Yoli's Rolis. I believe the "Friday Night Lights" is an incredible idea, and promotes a better community. If you find yourself in the Century III/South Hills area, definitely give this restaurant a try!
