Uncle Sam's is a local chain that currently has three restaurants in the Pittsburgh area. It specializes in making submarine sandwiches in a wide variety of flavors, and it also offers some other foods such as fries and salads. My husband and I ate dinner here for the first-ever time. When we first entered the restaurant, five employees were standing at the counter, and none said hello to us. They did, however, promptly take our order, process our payment, make our foods, and bring the foods to our table. I ate a Special-Italian sub, and my husband ate a turkey sub. The subs contained fresh ingredients, but we were not thrilled with their flavors, so we ate only about half of the subs. We most enjoyed the French fries that were crispy and tasty.

This place is so good and I love when this is dinner. Fries come free if you eat in. Pretty good bottled beer selection and a few solid drafts. The sandwiches are amazing! Soft fresh bread. Each sandwich is cooked to order. If you can sit at the counter and watch them cook I recommend it.

    Uncle Sam's Special Steak

The Uncle Sam's Special Steak sandwich was packed with beef, mushrooms, peppers and onions, french fries were fresh and the cherry cola was crisp all for a very reasonable price!!

Wow... This place has AMAZING subs and is popular!! A small group (co-workers) of us came in on a weekday for lunch, but we got there on the tail end of the lunch rush, around 1PM... There was a long line to place the order, but it was impressive watching them manning the grills they had... making sandwiches and subs! I tried their Uncle Sam's Special Steak and it was great... Their fries are really good too, but I heard they're free/included if you dine in. The place was packed, but we still got decent service and enjoyed our lunch. Can't wait to go back!!

First time here. Loved the classic diner look. Great customer service. We had a sandwich, and chili-cheese fries, with a Troeg's draft beer, which didn't disappoint. The menu is simple, with salads, sandwiches, chili, and fries, but definitely enough choices, including vegetarian options. Will definitely be back! Of note, they have Coca-Cola products! Bonus!

Really enjoyed this place. When you go into a sandwich shop like Subway or Jersey Mike's, you get plain Jane. This place is like Jane's hotter sister. Really cool surroundings with some fun signage but the star is the aroma! You smell it the minute you walk in - great food! Each sandwich comes with a pile of hot, crispy perfectly salted fries! The sammy itself is on a crusty and soft hoagie. I ordered the Italian sausage loaded with sweet peppers. This is my second time having it and it did not disappoint. I couldn't wait to dig in so I forgot to take a pic, but trust me, it was good!

It may surprise some to know how many times I've hung out in Pittsburgh in the last 16 years or so,…read morebecause I've never been to a Primanti Bros. before. But then again, I am vegetarian, so I didn't think they offered anything for me. I've looked at the menu online more than once, and didn't see any sandwiches designated vegetarian each time. But I was meeting a friend before a concert on the RMU campus, and this was conveniently located 1 mile away, and it had food and beer. I kept an open mind and figured, I'll just modify one of their sandwiches. When I arrived, I learned they also have a pizza option. But I still thought... when in Rome... There was a black bean option listed on their wall menu, but the waitress double-checked for me and we learned together that they use to offer that option, but no longer do. Damn. There was however a cheese (no meat) option on the menu, which I was surprised wasn't on the online menu. But I'll take it! Their sandwiches are interesting in that instead of sides of french fries and cole slaw, the sides are just stacked into the sandwich to make it a quick easy convenient meal! The draft beer selection was good, the sandwich was decent enough, and the service was great (weekday evening). In the end, I am not sure I'd run back for my one sandwich menu option, maybe I'd try their pizza, or go for some sides, or just stop in for a beer on my way to my next show. I enjoyed the vibe and most everthing about the place, but the sandwich was just okay.

I just was not thrilled. You definitely have to expect a weird experience if you want to enjoy the food here. I also ordered a slice of cheese pizza just in case I didn't like the sandwich. Unfortunately I didn't like the pizza even more. Lol. Live and learn. I still get three stars because there were totally nothing wrong with the Pitts-burger except I didn't like it. The pizza was not good though. The customer service was pretty decent though. So pops for that.

Genius! My Hook & Ladder arrived looking like it had been run over by the actual fire truck, soggy bread that dissolved into paste, "smoked" turkey that tasted like wet cardboard marinated in regret, and mayo so thin it was basically flavored air. Portion sizes? Adorable! They must've switched to the "Toddler Menu" when I wasn't looking. And the crew my god, the crew. Every single employee behind the counter was an imported worker, clearly flown in on the "We Refuse to Pay Americans" visa program. Not one local soul in sight! They were polite in that dead-eyed, soul-crushed way you get when your paycheck wouldn't cover a Happy Meal. Orders wrong? Naturally. Enthusiasm? Zero. It's like they hired a call center to assemble subs. Pro tip: if your wages are so insulting that nobody in a 50-mile radius will take the job, maybe, just maybe, pay people enough to live. Nah, too logical. Firehouse Subs: now proudly serving budget bin sadness in a firefighter hat. 10/10 for cost-cutting, 0/10 for literally everything else. Avoid unless you hate flavor and joy.

We ordered 2 sandwiches at 6:10 PM, the wait was a little longer than anticipated and was ready at 7:00 pm. It smelled mildly "fishy" but it is fish after all. First impression, it did not appear as advertised. It was missing the sauce and lettuce pictured on the website. I took three bites and unfortunately, the fish was hard. It seemed over cooked which may have contributed to the time it took to receive it. The grease also tasted old. The Mac on top was again, overcooked. The French fries were cooked well, but they had so much old bay seasoning and salt it was difficult to eat. I wish this were unique to my order, but I was dinning with three others, all ordering the same thing, and we all had the same complaints. I did request to speak with someone in the kitchen but they said they didn't have time as they were quite busy. The brewery was full and outside seating was also starting to fill so that is understandable. The bartender at strange roots had us write our names on a piece of paper and said the kitchen will refund the meals. I contemplated ordering a burger instead but didn't want to wait again so we did leave to dine elsewhere.

We had fried pickles, a sunshine salad (as a side salad), and a couple of hot dogs--the bacon dog and the Picklesburgh dog. Pickles were a tiny bit greasy but crunchy and substantial. The side salad was absolutely delicious with lots of textures and crunch, both acidic and a little sweet all at the same time. I would order it as a dinner salad for sure.
