[As I am about to post this (long-overdue) review of Jersey Tomatoes, I note that my sister already posted a review that covers most of what I am saying here. But here it is again, from a slightly different angle...] Hiring Jersey Tomatoes to cater our wedding was one of the easiest decisions we made in the whole planning process. They became the caterer of choice for my family after they catered my sister's wedding in September 2009 and blew everyone away with their delicious and unique food (served that time as a four course Top Chef style competition dinner - guests voted between two dishes each course prepared by two dueling chefs, and a winner was announced at the end of the reception - super fun!). We hired them for a couple of birthday dinner parties after that and, seriously, every bite of food I've tasted from them has been absolutely off the hook. I especially appreciate how they can make dishes that are vegetarian/vegan convertible - we are a family with meat eaters and vegans and everything in between, and every one of us is happy after a JT dinner. For our wedding in March, JT planned a family style "tapas" dinner with four amazing dishes all served at once to each table, which we thought was a really nice change from the typical buffet or plated dinners you find at most weddings - it added to the family feeling of our wedding and everyone got to try several different dishes. JT offered a gazillion choices for our passed appetizers and dinner selections, and everything sounded so damn amazing, that even after a tasting we still couldn't decide what to choose and decided to let them surprise us (Christian told us this was a first - he loved that we wanted to do this). We knew we would love everything they made and we did. (I had a friend coordinate getting our menus printed so that on our wedding day we were seeing the menu for the first time along with our guests.) JT also did a fabulous job of working with me to really understand what I wanted and handling so many details of the wedding reception - all of the rentals (from tables and table cloths to coat racks and hurricanes to the kitchen that they BUILT outside because our venue didn't have a kitchen), bar service, set-up and break-down (in ridiculously tight time-frame). Christian really took ownership of the whole process and delivered a seamless event under some pretty crazy conditions (the rainiest Saturday in March, in that outdoor kitchen they built, battling wind and rain, all unbeknownst to us inside, getting our drink on and having a lovely cozy evening in the Presidio Log Cabin). I can highly recommend Jersey Tomatoes for any occasion where you want local, fresh, unique, delicious food and great service. read more

Christian and crew catered our wedding in April and we couldn't have been more pleased with the food. He handled every detail we asked for beautifully; from the set-up and breakdown of the greenhouse location to organizing the dessert station (even though it was from another vendor). Christian created a menu of seasonal and unique appetizer options for us and the guests could not believe how delicious every last bite was. Christian and his Jersey Tomatoes team catered our recent wedding party, piling on the deliciousness and helping making the event fun-fun-fun. What to expect from him? Complete professionalism, accommodating, and easy to work with. Christian was up front about all costs, rentals (they brought a convection oven! so cool), food, and timing and made the act of planning a party easy and fun. This was a big relief for me, not being used to throwing such an soiree. The event was for 70 people and held at Forbidden Island in Alameda. He and his crew not only provided incredibly delicious food but did so with huge smiles and gracious attitudes. One fun aspect of our event was that Christian and his head chef chose the menu so it was a complete surprise for us that day. Fantastic! Do I have any regrets or disappointments? Our wedding was a beautiful day start to finish, and without a doubt one of the biggest reasons was Jersey Tomatoes. Christian and Sarah handled any and all of our needs with professionalism and a relaxed sense of control. They were extremely diligent and responsive to any questions or concerns we had and gave us plenty of feedback and suggestions based on our needs. When it came down to it, we were truly able to enjoy our wedding day because their thorough planning and attention to detail allowed us to focus on the celebration that was our wedding day. A few particular notes I wanted to highlight. They were ready and willing to travel outside of the city for us and were able to make our outdoor setting really work. The setting was perfect and they made sure that the execution matched it. Working with Jersey tomatoes and their day of coordinator was perfect. They were able to take care of all of the outside necessities of a wedding day that others are normally forced to on their own. Rentals, Beverages, day of coordination, site visits, all of this and more, and none of this speaks to their true advantage over other caterers, the food. Their food differs from any other I've ever had at a wedding because they only create product that they are proud of. Restaurant style food created in a rustic accessible form. All of their menus and dishes are based on the season, so they won't sacrifice the product for the dish. They worked with us on menu choices and spent the time to make sure that we had dishes that would create a balanced meal for all of our guests. We opted to go with a family style service and they executed it to perfection. Bountiful platters of fresh flavors arrived to the table allowing everyone to enjoy as much or as little as they wanted. As good as the food was, the guest feedback was even better. So many commented on how beautiful the food looked, and how wonderful it tasted. Simple flavors executed exceptionally. Their professionalism was exemplified throughout the process beginning to end but none more so than the day of. They executed everything while blending perfectly into the back. Working with our other vendors, the band, timing on the ceremony, guest rides, vendor meals, guest requests. All of these things and more we found out about afterwards when guests came up to us and told us how helpful and warm the staff was. Jersey Tomatoes really took a hands on approach to creating the perfect day for us. It was seamless and so much better than we had ever hoped for. 5. In March of this year, Jersey Tomatoes (Christian and Sam, plus a handful of other support staff) catered my sister's wedding at the Log Cabin in the Presidio. There were 150 guests, ten per table, and the dinner was set up as "family style" platters for 10, including hot and cold dishes, being served at each table. The kitchen conditions at the Log Cabin are such that Christian had to set up just outside the facility, and rain was expected, so he set up tents and arranged things so it would work. Before dinnertime, hurricane conditions arose. Nobody inside really realized it because we were inside comfy and cozy in the log cabin. Food began being served and it was deluxxx-ious as always. I suddenly caught a glimpse of Christian and he was in a raincoat, hood up, his entire head of hair was 100% wet. I went over to where the caterers were set up to see how bad it was. It was hurricane conditions out there. Every member of the crew was soaked head to toe, despite wearing complete rain gear of the type you would expect on The Deadliest Catch. I don't know how they kept their tents standing, they seemed to be on the verge of blowing away. And I really couldn't understand how they were able to still put out hot delicious food platter after platter, it was a mystery to me. I have to believe that most caterers in those conditions would have been like, I'm sorry ma'am, it's just not humanly possible, we're going to have to bring in pizza. But Jersey Tomatoes produced food that was incredible even without taking those conditions into consideration. Taking them into consideration, it was nothing short of a miracle. 4. A month before my sister's wedding was my sister's birthday. I won't say what year she turned, but it was a milestone. I decided to make it a "two-fer" and throw her a birthday-shower, invite 25 of her closest friends and their S.O.'s, and hire Jersey Tomatoes to cater the dinner as a "supper club," again with family-style plates passed around. My problem was that we didn't have a location. My sister's flat was cute, but her kitchen certainly was too small for Jersey Tomatoes to work. Or so I thought. Christian came to evaluate the place and decided he could make it work. And made it work he (Sam, in this case) did. A beautiful, fresh, local, organic, etc., delicious meal was served from this teeny tiny kitchen. Everyone loved the food and we were extremely pleased. 3-2. In November of 2010, and November 2009, Jersey Tomatoes catered my husband's birthday dinners (about 12 -15 people), again in a "supperclub" format, and again I was having problems finding an appropriate location. In both cases, Christian helped us be creative about where to hold our event, in both cases holding the dinner in a place that we never would have thought would be an option for us. 1. Jersey Tomatoes catered my wedding in September 2008. We had never used them before but knew Christian through a friend and they came highly recommended. My husband and I had a fantasy of having our dinner "Top Chef" style, we are both obsessed with that show. We didn't think it would be possible, but we asked Christian whether he and Sam (his soux-chef at the time) would compete against another. They readily agreed, and went along (it took a little convincing) to serve the food in the form of eight small plates in four courses, two small plates per course, served head-to-head, with guests having an actual scorecard and choosing for each course which plate they preferred. I won't tell you who won, but dinner was by far the highlight of the reception, both the format and the food blew people away. Jersey helped our dreams become a reality, and did a better job than we ever imagined could be done. Also, the tables were set beautifully, that was probably the second highlight of the evening. Jersey also prepared "passed" appetizers for before dinner, including venison sliders, foreshadowing for our guests what they were in for. A smashing success. To be fair I must give readers a two-point "heads up" to make sure your event is perfect: Timing. Do not plan on your meal starting or playing out on a particularly strict time schedule. Have some apps/cheese out in advance, and plan for activities or speeches in between courses. Guests with special food requirements. One of the things I love about Jersey is that they keep their menus a surprise and flexible because they use the freshest ingredients available that day. Make sure that you know, and communicate clearly, exactly how many guests you have with exactly what food limitations, and I would also go so far as to find out, at whatever point possible, what the menu is going to be, so you can be sure your guests with limitations will be 100% satisfied. Christian catered our April wedding for 75 guests at a SOMA art gallery, and we couldn't have been happier with the results. We received a ton of compliments on the quality of the food. The meal felt seasonal, creative, and local-inspired. Christian is very committed to the quality of the food and of the presentation as a whole. He worked hard to fit his prep area into the small gallery space we had available, and had numerous calls with us (even from home) to nail down details. I will say that once or twice, I felt that Christian's dedication to his vision of our event made him hard to convince to make changes...but I truly believe this comes from his desire to put on the best event possible. In every case things worked out for the best. Christian was spot on when he swore his eggplant parm (his grandmother's recipe) would be a hit: it was incredible and one of the best dishes at our reception. I was looking for a caterer for my wedding and interviewed/did tastings at 3 places, and from the start I had a warm and fuzzy feeling about JT. Christian made us feel so welcome at the tasting as he sat right down and ate with us as he explained the food and really tried to get to know us. He wasn't just trying to win my business but was making sure it was a mutual fit to ensure a successful event. Throughout the planning process he was on top of all the details, and was very prompt in following up which was such a relief because I was juggling so many other things while planning the wedding. The day of the wedding they were there on time, dressed professionally with smiles on their faces. They were trying so hard to make sure my day was special and they succeeded! The food was AMAZING! All fresh and organic products. They use only what is in season so everything was bursting with flavor! I had so many compliments from my guests which reinforced that I made the right choice in hiring JT. 3.75 stars...I couldn't bring myself to give a 4 because there were a couple issues I had with the service, but ultimately I was impressed. We hired Christian for our wedding caterer. I decided to go with him because he sat down with us during the tasting, offered us a glass of wine, and chatted while I offered feedback. I was really impressed with this personal gesture...until he charged me for the tasting (which is standard) AND the glass of wine. lame. Overall, his food was fresh and organic, which was important for us. We did not want "catered" tasting food at our wedding, nor a meat, chicken, veggie menu. He worked with us to help develop the menu, but it was a bit of a struggle. I felt like he was only half open to suggestions, but none-the-less it worked out. It could have been a little less difficult, but I think we had a lot of cooks in the kitchen. We had our wedding at a private residence, which made it a little more challenging for them to work. Our food was room temperature by the time it was served and they were a little understaffed for our party. By the time I was done, my guests at the other end of the table were just getting served. I only had 65 guests, so I expected a more timed service, but mostly everyone commented on how great the food was, so I was happy. At the last minute, I had asked him to come out to announce the dishes since we had a pairing menu. EVERYONE LOVED THIS TOUCH, as I did too. It was really cool of him to accommodate this request as I had sprung it on him. Overall, he was a great caterer and I would recommend him again. I thought he was a bit pricey, and felt he tried to pull some fast ones on me, but the food was on par and he was willing to work (within specific means) to develop some dishes based on our personal requests. read more

THANK YOU JERSEY TOMATOES! My engagement was a short one: and as you probably well know, planning any party (let alone a wedding!) is quite the ordeal. Christian was with us, start to finish, to create a beautiful, smooth experience for everyone. I had wanted a 100% DIY wedding. My friend was going to cater, originally. But as more and more family member got involved and my guest list grew to 100, I knew I wouldn't be able to pull it off alone. My family is mostly humble. I didn't have a wedding planner. My mother was making my dress. I made my own flower arrangements. To be perfectly honest, given my budgetary constraints, I was tempted to go with a cheap, simple, local restaurant that my friend had recommended. Fact of the matter is, I had eaten many times at JT's restaurant, Split Pea Seduction, at 6th and Mission (if you haven't had the pleasure of doing so- please make a point to!) and had absolutely loved the local, seasonal, creative mix of flavors. My father, similarly, loves their food. And so, the decision was made- we were going to feed our guests the best food for the best price- it had to be Jersey Tomatoes. Having a July wedding with guests arriving from all over the country, we wanted local, delicious, sustainable food. All three of us made menu choices based on variety, balance, and personal preference. The great thing about Christian is that he listens to your personal preferences before providing his professional opinion in a firm but empathetic manner. Through this method of discussion, we came to, what I believed to be, a solid and impressive menu. In addition, we were able to custom plan table sizes and chairs that fit the layout of our venue, as well as gorgeous table cloths, etc- all through Jersey Tomatoes- and without much headache! We even picked out our own alcohol and drink menu that JT was ready to serve. All along the planning process, Christian was right with us- a friendly voice via phone or e-mail. Like I said, we didn't have a wedding planner. Christian was prompt and attentive to our needs or decisions, and even let us know when he was going out of town! Fast forward to the wedding day: Christian and the crew at Jersey Tomatoes set up our venue just the way I wanted it. The appetizers were absolutely delightful, better than I ever imagined, prompting the guests to exclaim, "This is NOT wedding food!" Forgotten were the bland, colorless, traditional fare you expect at dull weddings, this was a real party, with real treats worthy of my similarly colorful guests! When dinner was served, my foodie friends were even more impressed- tapas dinner in four varieties served- not out of aluminum trays, but elegant and modern dishes- with unique layers of flavor, representing the local, delicious bounty that California has to offer. You weren't given the impression that anything was premade or re-heated; each dish served was obviously, deliciously, recently fired and plated elegantly for our guests to enjoy. My husband and I watched as our friends truly savored each and each went back for seconds. Were it not for Jersey Tomatoes, my big day could have easily been 'just another wedding' that friends attend out of loyalty and not genuine excitement. However, I am proud to say, a good portion of my guests have contacted me since to say that it was above and beyond what they expect of a normal wedding. Instead, my day stands apart as a day of delightful sensory deliciousness, thanks to Christian and his talented, exceptional crew at Jersey Tomatoes.
