I moved to Beacon Hill over a year ago, and Jess meets every requirement I have in a barber. He's close to my house, cheap, quick, and he cuts hair. Those are my only requirements. My hair doesn't have to be stylish or trendy. Which is good because I don't think Jess keeps up with what is "in" and neither do I. I'm the type of person that has no idea what to say when a barber asks, "So how do you want it cut?" My response is usually, "Make it shorter, you're the expert." As long as my hair is somewhat tidy and shorter than when I entered I'm happy. So I'm always happy with Jess. I don't need some hipster massaging my head for an hour before it's cut. I want to be straight in and out, then on with my day. Again, that's good, because Jess does the quickest haircut imaginable. He literally runs around your head with the clippers as though he's trying to beat a record. At only $15 a cut, he understands that time is money. Does he make mistakes from time to time? Probably, but again I'm not the type to notice or care. My philosophy is that it'll grow back anyway and there's no issue that a little hair gel can't solve. Know that when you go to Jess, you're getting a no-frills experience. The space was in need of a renovation around 20 years ago. The paint is peeling from the walls. There are National Geographics from the early 90s to read while you wait. This is the barbershop equivalent of McDonalds: fast, cheap, and it does the job. I've been coming to Jess' for haircuts for about a year now. He's very friendly, quick and skilled. Really can't beat the price. I'm mixed Filipino and Black and he hasn't jacked up my hair once! Impressive for a non-Black barber in my book. The thing about Jess is if you're the type to want something different every single time, or want like a super creative edgy style, I think he could do it but you might be better off at one of those fancier places in Capitol Hill. Jess is really great if you're that person that knows what your cut is and you never stray or you let your hair grow out but need to reign it in for work or a date or just need a quick trim or shape up. I tend to go very short in the summer and more hair on the top during the winter, pretty standard. When I want something 'fancy' I go elsewhere. Love that if there is no line you're in and out in about 10-15 minutes. Downside is he's cash only but for only $10 a cut, really can't complain. read more

I've been going to Jess' shop every month or so for about a year and a half now and to be honest I can't see myself going for a trim anywhere else. I usually make it in on a mid-morning weekday and have never had more than two people ahead of me in line-- and the line moves briskly. He's always super-friendly and will engage in good banter if prompted, which is always a nice bonus when you're sitting there for the 10-15 minutes it takes him to shape you up. A salon this is not; Jess' tools are scissors, a comb, a couple of different kinds of clippers and a vacuum to suck up the trimmed hair. The first two or three times I went I was surprised at how quickly he was done, but he hands you a hand mirror so you can inspect his handiwork and I've never had a problem with it. (Granted, I have a pretty simple hairstyle.) Like all great small businesses, he will remember repeat customers and now knows exactly how I want my hair cut without me having to remind him. That, combined with the excellent service and price (just $10 plus tip at the time of this review) make Jess' my go-to barbershop. Give him a try. He's a good dude. read more

Based on my experience, a lot of stylists cannot cut Asian hair right. I usually ask for a short/neat cut. Jess did a great job with it and I was done within 20 minutes. I came here for a very simple haircut, basically everything about half an inch shorter, owner seemed nice enough. Over heard him talking to another customer about a complaint of how fast he give haircut. When it was my turn, I paid $15 for a haircut and it was the fastest haircut I have had in my entire life, like 8 minutes or less total. I just couldn't believe how fast he was moving and he seemed like a pro. He never stopped to ask my opinion/how i want/if it is short enough. Haircut was a disappointment and when I went home to take a shower one side was crooked. It was a very sloppy haircut. :( why rush. I just moved to seattle and I miss the $12 haircut that my barber took 15 meticulous minutes to do. For $15 I expected him to take a bit more time to be more meticulous. read more

This is a no frills barbershop, as probably you have guessed from the price point. Barber was very nice and talkative, which I like in a Barber. He moves you in and out, but I didn't feel very rushed. My hair was cut quickly but nicely, but I have a very simple "do." Seattle is a funny place. It has such a rich history, but it is just so...new. I don't mean this as a slam on this great city, but there are some cultural gems that you just can't get in Seattle due to it's relative newness in comparison with other cities like Boston, NYC, or Philly. Shoeshine stands in airports. Doormen. Maitre'Ds that will pull out the chair for the ladies at a restaurant. Bars made out of burnished oak with real brass runners. Old school charm, manners, and class - that sort of thing. So, I'm really happy to dedicate my first yelp to a tiny little shop called "Jess Barber Shop" located on Beacon Hill. Jess Barber Shop is a 1-man operation in a tiny little suite in the 2300 block of Beacon Av S directly East of the Shell Station. There usually is a parking spot or two out front, if not, side street parking can always be found. Jess, a 1st Gen Filipino business owner, runs a modest little operation. He is a barber, not a hairstylist. This is an important distinction to make, especially in this day and age of Supercuts, Hairmasters, and other franchise do-it-all types of boutiques. Barber. Meaning, the answer to "How would you like your hair cut," is typically, "Short," "Medium," "Just a trim," or "Just clean it up a little on the sides." Jess will then go to work and give you exactly what you ask for for the tune of $10.00. Two things set Jess apart from the rest out there: 1. Jess is an old-school trained barber, meaning that he uses scissors with his thumb as a guide, and he's dang good with them. Of course, he will use clippers too if the style requires it (and he even vacuums your head - I know it sounds weird but it really gets rid of a lot of the tiny hair clippings that get caught in your ears and on your collar), but he is an ace with scissors. 2. Jess also uses a straight-edge razor. I am a huge fan of these, and Jess is the 1st barber that I've encountered in Seattle that actually knows how to use a straight-edge and does it quite well, however, he realized that the razor scares a lot of his American customers, so you will need to request a straight-razor shave if you go there. If you go again, he'll remember you and have at it without even asking. This is the old-school quality that I've been missing - a real barber, a real straight-razor shave, and the definite old-school price of $10.00. Jess is great guy; always smiling, and he does a great job. Do not go to him if you expect some trendy couture cut however; he is no frills, no BS, and 100% genuine. Have a great time! read more

I've been rocking the short hair for more than a year now, but I hadn't had a cut since just before we moved back home to Seattle in May. It was getting a little shaggy up there, but I'd left the stylist I liked back in California, and I didn't have time to schlep over to Greenwood Academy for a student cut like I used to when I had long hair. What to do? I heard about Jess from the Beacon Hill mailing list. Could it be? Cheap, decent haircuts on the north end of the Hill? It could, indeed, be. I stopped in on an unexpectedly free Monday afternoon, and arrived just as a father and son with matching high-and-tights were paying. Jess whisked me into the chair and asked what I wanted, then set immediately to work. These aren't highly technical haircuts -- Jess does most of his work with a comb and electric clippers, so you're not going to get something super fancy or hipstery. Think of a 1950s barbershop, run by a friendly, fast Filipino dude. I didn't really want anything unusual, but I've got some monster cowlicks that take some special handling, and Jess was up to the task; if anything was going to knock a point off, it would be that he didn't quite believe me about how bad they were, and so my hair's shorter in the back than it should be to blend the length properly, but he'll remember that next time. After a few minutes with the clippers and comb, he set to work with scissors to do the rest of the rough work, then got out a smaller hair trimmer to do the final cleanup around the edges. He even blended the cut in with my beard and trimmed that up a little as well. When he was done, I was surprised at how nice it looked, and then surprised again that I'd been in his chair for maybe five or six minutes -- total I was parked for something like ten. Did I mention that Jess works fast? And the cut was only $10. I know, right? Parking is a little odd, but there is street parking in front of the shop, some lot parking across and down the street, and more street parking in the area. Honestly, you're probably not going to be parked for very long, but go during a weekday afternoon if you can. Great guy. He's fast when he has to, can't beat $10, but does a great job and takes pride in his work. Does kid's cuts too. Funny thing is, if you're the only one there, he'll take about 30 minutes to make sure it's right. If it's busy, he'll take about 10-12 minutes, but it's still done right. Either way YOU CAN'T TELL THE DIFFERENCE, you still get a good haircut. I live in Issaquah, but willing to drive to for a quality haircut. Long time customer of Jess's since before he started his own place. Open Monday through Saturday til 6pm, but if you show up before closing he's usually cutting hair until about 7pm.
