Families deserve dignity -- not trauma…read more I personally paid almost $8,000 to GH Herrmann Funeral Home to handle my father's remains. After they took custody of him, they failed to properly preserve him. He was left unrefrigerated for days, and his body visibly decomposed. The smell will never leave my memory. Under Indiana law (IC § 23-14-31-37), if immediate cremation is not possible, funeral homes must place remains in a proper holding facility that preserves health and safety. That did not happen here. Although my siblings & I declined embalming, we were never informed that this funeral home had no refrigeration, & that our father's body would be left unrefrigerated to decompose. Had we been given that information, we most certainly would have made different arrangements. When I raised concerns, I received an extremely unprofessional and abusive call from Jeff Herrmann, the co-owner of the funeral home. During the call -- which I lawfully recorded -- he said to me, "the fucking motorcycle accident turned him into a slushie, not us." Additionally, although my family arranged for my father -- a veteran -- to receive full military honors, at the funeral GH Herrmann Funeral Home told us they "didn't have time" to allow the full Honor Guard ceremony to take place. This final disrespect toward my father, who served his country, was devastating to our family. The full audio recording of my conversation with Jeff Herrmann is available upon request.

When we went to our first…read moreconsultation very shortly after my fathers passing, the man who said he's been doing this for years, repeatedly made joking comments about my fathers weight, my parents marriage even compared their marriage to his except his is "still going." All the while we were sitting at the same table in tears. My mother had brought this unacceptable behavior up and the funeral director addressed it as soon as we arrived to the viewing. He apologized and gave us cards to call him for anything, day or night. (But this was at the viewing, almost the last step in the exchange with the funeral home) after handing us the cards he raved about how his new renovations are appealing compared to the old one. He said he wasn't selling to us but still told us to tell all our friends. All the while there's a loaf of moldy bread and two black bananas not two feet away. They have used, but not cleaned, glass mugs for your complimentary coffee and tea. And there was painters tape and plastic lining still in the hallways. Even with all of that, the worst part was the viewing. It was my poor assumption that they would have a professional makeup artist/mortician that knew how to do makeup. It looked like they used only foundation several shades darker than he was, from the eyes down blending it into his beard, his salt and pepper beard and mustache was flesh colored from the over blending and the foundation was peeling off at the side. His cheeks were bulging out unnaturally like a chipmunk. I haven't been to many funerals but to my knowledge they are supposed to look at a picture and make them look as much like that as they can. I don't believe any thing like that was done in my situation. I would not recommend this funeral home to anyone. Not a single person deserves to be treated like that nor see their loved one like that. 0 stars
