A small group of us came on an otherwise busy holiday for a late lunch. As luck would have it, a late lunch qualifies for the early bird dinner combo specials which are pretty sweet. For something like 13 euro, we each got an app, side, and main of usual portion size. Not only was the food a bargain, the quality was top notch. I started with the chicken tikka, which had just the right level of kick to it. I moved onto the prawns bhuna, which had me wanting to lick the plate clean. Since I'm not a big naan fan, I decided to go with a green salad as my side. It was alright. However, someone in my group decided to go with sweet naan, which may have changed my opinion on naan in general. Jewel in the Crown is some of the best Indian I've ever had. The wait staff are friendly and attentive. The food is delicious and piping hot. Upon walking up to Jewel in the Crown, you will find a friendly smile to walk you to a table inside. The restaurant is usually bustling so don't expect a 5-minute meal. You will be given a nicely sized menu featuring an amazing early bird special page which I highly recommend. The offerings include all of the traditional indian fare and the staff are more than happy to accommodate requests as well. Stopped at this little "jewel" during hurricane Ophelia ", nothing else was open.....and what a little jewel is was.!! Someone in a previous review said they wish it had more of an Indian atmosphere? *** Just dropped it down to one star after the incredibly rude attitude of both waiters after I had to go to the register to ask if I could pay my bill. The fact they didn't bring it to me for over 30 minutes after they cleared the table despite me requesting it 3 times apparently meant I deserved to be talked down to.*** The food here isn't bad at all, although the portions are considerably smaller than other similarly priced Indian food restaurants nearby. The truly disappointing thing about Jewel in the Crown is the service. I've currently been waiting on my bill with no water and literally nothing on the table for 20 minutes despite two waiters and only 5 tables with customers. Slap bang in the middle of the south city hub between Grafton St and George's St this place is beyond successful. I chanced in there the other day with two friends. We couldn't agree on whether to have burgers or Chinese and then like a vision in the darkness we saw the Jewel in the Crown. The food is exactly as you'd expect - then again maybe that's because we all had what we'd normally have. That's not to say that it was bad but rather that it wasn't outstanding. However the real shocker came when we were charged something in the region of €7 for a (admittedly 500ml) bottle of Cobra beer, it was agreed amongst our small surveyed sample that really that was in no way cool. Went here last night to try and have a normal meal and not ask for anything hot etc. Ordered the Lamb Balti, Saag Paneer and Bombay Aloo. By far the best curries I have had in Dublin. We finished every bit of it and enjoyed every mouthful. The lamb was tender and full of flavour, the Saag paneer had a lot of paneer and a bit of a bite to it. Bombay Aloo was delicious with a tiny hint of sweetness. The naan and chapatti were freshly made and tasty. And the complimentary pappadums came with nice dips. All in all a fabulous meal and for a moment I thought I was back in Mumbai :-) Finally making progress on finding good Asian in Dublin woo hoo !! read more

All of the dishes we got were tasty and well-spiced, but they all tasted very similar. Started with the onion baji... It was flavorful and not overly-oily. The name of this restaurant couldn't be more true. Absolute delight! My family and I came here for dinner on Day 2 of our trip to Ireland. We wanted to pace ourselves with the Irish Stew and Shepard's Pie. Sorry Ireland... For starters we got the samosas and they were delicious. They could have been bigger but I'm not docking then a star because the samosas needed more filling. I had the dal soup as well and it turned out to be the yellow dal which if made right is quite then and broth-like. It was perfect! Finding a perfect yellow dal is about as hard as finding a place that makes creme brûlée correctly. Try the dal! We did the early bird special deal where you get a starter, the choice of naan or rice and a main entree from a limited set of option. We had the chicken korma and the chicken bhuna. The chicken korma was so good (3 of us ordered the same thing), we were all fighting the urge not to be savages and lick the bowls. The korma comes mild so you need to ask them to make it spicier or they will bring you a plate of chili powder. The other dish, the chicken bhuna was incredibly flavorful. The bhuna is served medium. Both are perfect for dipping the bread in. They were 2 very different dishes with equally pleasing flavors. It's not easy to please 5 people in one sitting. If they can do that, it's gotta be something special. read more

I rarely give 5 stars, but this place deserves it. Chicken Dhansak, chicken Bhuna, onion bhaji, samosas, and a variety of dips and poppadoms. Everything was just lovely. Service was very good. My friend even had a chat with one of the staff we met outside, and he spoke for five minutes telling us where the different dishes originate from. Could really hear his passion for the food. Decor is not great, but then Indian restaurants usually have that look:-) The Dhansak was the hot option we went for... it was indeed hot, but only as an aftertaste, so we could also enjoy the sweet flavors. That is just how I like it. The texture was great too, and the chicken was very good quality. The Bhuna was milder, and very tasty. We were walking around for about an hour trying to decide on where to eat. We finally all agreed upon Indian at Jewel in the Crown and I am so glad we did. For bang smack in the city centre, the prices are great and the service prompt. It seems to me sometimes that Indian restaurants vary less by taste than by decor and that's what sets the prices. This is a ramshackle enough affair - decor ain't fancy but the place does what it says on the tin and the staff are really warm and welcoming. A downside might be the slightly claustrophobia feel to downstairs and that sense of being situated a little close to the loo for maximum comfort, but the food was damn tasty and if it's soakage or a quick tasty morsel you seek rather than a more atmospheric culinary affair, this is surely the place to stop, as the hordes of locals and tourists crowding to get in on a weekend night suggest. read more

Came here with some friends that were craving some Indian food, and while at first we weren't sold on the place the minute we got food on our table we were thrilled. I'm not an expert on Indian food by any means but this was far and away the best I've ever had. Two of the friends I was with do consider themselves experts and were extremely satisfied as well. The chicken tikka, lamb jalfrezi, samosas, and chicken marsala were all incredible. The service was slightly slow if I am required to point out one negative, but it was adequate. It seemed a bit pricy at first, but only compared to takeaway type Indian places really and it is definitely worth it. The meat was so tender it was falling apart, and the naan was absolutely the best. I absolutely loved this restaurant. It's always been a thing with my friend an I (at least twice in my life anyway) to find a great Indian restaurant when traveling overseas. The reviews here helped and I'm glad we chose this one. We arrived at 6:30 on a busy Saturday night (as it usually is in Dublin) and had a seat right away. We ordered the early bird special (which goes from 4:30 -7:30. After this time the prices get higher significantly. You get SO much food. The special includes a pre-starter of pappadoms and four dips/chutneys. The you can choose from about six starters-- I ordered the vegetable samosas and my friend ordered a lentil soup. Both had a good spice and flavor. Then for the main you had many options with three different groups of prices that ranged from 16 euros to 19 euros. My main dish, the vegetable Nawabi was AMAZING. As described in the menu, the vegetables were cooked in medium spice, with a combination of sweet mango and honey. It was almost like dessert. The employees were nice and attentive. Ok I try not to 5 star many places so I'll give a 4 but if they had more of a Indian feel with Indian music/decor it could go up. it was great to dine here. Inside front door the area is small maybe 20 seats but there is more downstairs for bigger groups. Food was really good, I'm starting to try a lot more Indian restaurants in Dublin city area and I think for now I have my favourite. Service was quick, they also serve the early bird menu till 7:30. So I'd make sure to get that every time for value for money, which give you a 2 course meal for price of a cinema ticket. So we got a hot chicken madras and cool lamb chroma dish. I enjoyed a great lunch at this Indian restaurant for a small price (dinner is a bit more expensive). Plates, main course and supplement are served separately, so it's possible to easily share with your opposite. The chicken curry / korma was very good, as well as probably the best Naan bread I enjoyed so far. The decoration is a bit sparse - though the tables are elegantly set, the rest of the restaurant lacks pictures on the walls or things like that. Though one of the waiters seemed a bit grumpy, the other one was excellent - very polite and he took all the time in the world to inform the customers about the different menu choices. Maybe I was missing something here. Only heard great things about this place and left rather disappointed. Place was empty when we arrived which was around 5:30 and the waiter sure took his time to give us our menu. Went for the Onion Bhaji's for starter which was delicious. +1 there. For mains I got the Chicken Korma which Naan bread as a side. Really underwhelming. I've eaten better from a packet which was very disappointing! The rice that also came had a taste of soap. I could hardly swallow it. Nice buzz when we were leaving which brightens up the rather dull interior. Under €14 euro in total from the early bird menu so I didn't feel robbed at all. Tuesday afternoon - Early bird time, two adults and a teenager. Went for a meal, had high expectations - only to be able to concur with others. This place indeed became my new fave Indian restaurant in Dublin. A handful of customers, Indian music softly playing, the atmosphere was quite peaceful. A smiling, friendly waiter seated us, took our order. Pre-starters arrived within a few minutes from ordering. 3 crispy poppadoms with 4 cups with dip and relishes. Starters (onion bhajis, chicken tikka/tandoori) and main courses (lamb madras, chicken bhuna/korma) were cooked to perfection, looked great, tasted even better. The bill wasn't extortion as you'd expect in Dublin 2 - it came to just under 50€ for all of us (had to add tips, as we were very happy with everything). Bellies full, didn't feel robbed, we waddled off very content. Will deffo come again! read more

I chose this place to celebrate my wedding anniversary and i am afraid to say that was a big mistake. The food was not really up to the standard. I ordered Chef special menu from which i had mainly chicken based and my wife all veg being a vegetarian. None of the dishes were really good and lacks the taste that indian dishes are famous for. The Jewel in the Crown on S William St seemed like a pleasant place. Our main motivation to step in was the €10 lunch menu. This was probably the biggest mistake we made that day. They offer a number of starters. My friend and I were into a soup, so she took the vegetable soup and I took the mushroom soup. Words cannot express how disappointed we were when we received our first course. The soups were made from powder. I couldn't believe that a restaurant would actually do such a thing. What's more, there were even chunks of the powder in both soups! For the main course, we went for one Jalfrezi and one Balti vegetables accompanied by pilau rice and naan bread. We could hardly tell the difference between the dishes. The vegs were pretty similar, as were the sauces. The aroma and taste were reasonable, but the dishes were far too oily. The rice was pretty good and the portion was big, disproportionately to the size of the main dish (this is actually not a complaint, it's better to bring a bit too much of the rice, I guess) and the naan was fresh, though the chef could be more tight with the ghee, as it was, as the main dish, very oily. The meal also included a coffee and tea at the end, that were OK. As I wrote at the beginning, the decoration of the place looks alright and the staff was nice and helpful. However, as the main purpose of a restaurant is to serve food and theirs is just not good enough, I would definitely not recommend to dine in the Jewel in the Crown. You will be better off to dine elsewhere. read more

So, as Indian restaurants go, this place is fairly middle-of-the-road. Taking advantage of the uncultured palates of the Irish, the dishes aren't as spicy as they should be, nor are they as tasty as they could be. What they are though is cheap, and decent. We used to go for lunch sometimes during college, and their menu would tide you over for the rest of the day, as it really is great value. You won't pay more than a tenner, and you definitely won't go home hungry. Just don't expect high-grade stuff. This place is located just off Grafton Street, so specialises more in feeding the hungry masses than in real top-notch dishes. Which is more than fine with me. read more

First, I must say that I was wandering the streets of Dublin looking for a hot meal and just couldn't stand the thought of going to McDonalds, so I asked at a local bar and the gentleman at the door pointed me in the direction of this restaurant. It was late and I believe I was likely the last customer. The gentleman that served me was extremely gracious even though I was likely holding him up from going home. I had a chicken tikka, medium spicy and it was not spicy at all. Actually, it was quite mild. I also had rice, raita and naan. The naan was my favorite. It was just perfect. Sadly, the food was a bit bland. I have had much better from a flavor perspective, although the quality was good. I would definitely try again when in Dublin. It beats any other late night meal by a mile. The service was also outstanding for me. I was by myself and the server made polite conversation. I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone as they do not serve listed menu items. The poor experience started with a waiter with an attitude. When asking questions could not explain items on the menu, was frustrated and ignorant. Ok, got through the first course a bad experience. Food comes piece meal style, meaning one at a time dishes including breads. By the way, tandoori roti is not the same as chapati. However, our server did not understand and provide more of his shameful attitude. The Owner should retrain his waiters on being attentive and not the ignorant and poor service provided. Funny how the chicken in many Indian restaurants has the same rubbery consistency. I went for the Early Bird with a friend who's nutty about Indian food and our reactions were the same: meh. The portions are plentiful: her tandoor chicken starter could have passed for a main course, but the food is just...meh. The garlic naan gets a 6.5 out of ten for actually having garlic in it, not always the case in some Indian restaurants where I often wonder if the so-called garlic naan even had a clove of garlic breathe in its general direction. My main course, the Crown Chicken Ginger, definitely had some ginger matchsticks in there, yum, but I would have liked it more gingery and expected a bit more from the chilli tomato sauce. I'm not normally very critical about food but this place just didn't do it for me. Nice service though. read more

When one thinks Dublin, one synonymously thinks Indian, right? Well, we did, because that's what Art Guinness told us to do. Very welcoming, hospitable staff. Wifey went ape over the poppadoms. I was trying to have a substantive conversation, and she wouldn't listen to me because she kept telling me how good the poppadoms were. I didn't disagree, but seriously, I had interesting things to say also. Veal Bhuna... killed it. I crushed that dish. Sopped up every last drop of the sauce with by naan, which was expertly prepared by the way. The old ball and chain had the chicken korma, in part because she doesn't care for spice, in other part because it was ridic. So good. When she went to the bathroom, I took like 3 pieces of chicken from her dish. These dishes were both part of the early bird menu, which in terms of the hierarchy of deals in this world, is right up there with winning the lottery. 40 euro for a 3 course meal? Yeah, son! Have had two lovely meals here with my mother, we hadn't booked anywhere for dinner on a Friday night and at around half 8 having wandered for a while we settled on returning here. They made space for us within a couple of minutes. The decor has changed to a white and blue feel, unlike the heavily aromatic purple and gold of before, but it's still lovely and intimate. The food is always great, the starter Onion Baiji is absolutely divine, perfectly crispy on the outside and moist inside. Even though my mother and I were the last in the restaurant (I try to avoid this usually) we didn't feel at all rushed, and as we paid, as quickly as was polite, we were even offered some sambuca on the house for our digestion. It was a lovely treat, one I've never got in an Indian restaurant before, and our two course meal with rice, poppadums and naan, with a few large bottles of cobra beer came to about 70.
