Diwali Indian Restaurant was among the best food I had in over a week of visiting England, Scotland, and Ireland. I visited their Camden St. location which is an area of Dublin that's buzzing with restaurants. Other more highly rated Indian restaurants (which were also more expensive) were all booked up, and I'm glad they were, since Diwali was right up our alley for tastes as they provided delicious food and excellent service. The music was great, and decor just right for ambiance. Meals start off with complimentary papadum and various chutneys, which is always appreciated. For drinks, we got the mango lassi and Cobra beer. The mango lassi had the perfect yogurt and mango accents without being too sweet, and was better than even the highly rated restaurants we went to in London. The Cobra beer was decent with regards to flavor. We tried the onion bhaji and chicken pakora to start off. The onion bhaji was a little bit oily, but great in taste and presentation, leaving us wondering how it was made as it was a pull apart variety while still preserving the chickpea batter accent with each bite. The chicken pakoras were also good, with a batter spiced just right. For main course, we ordered the butter chicken along with pulau rice and a naan. Nothing groundbreaking with regards to recipe, but just fresh and delicious food for these items. The pulau rice was better than plain basmati rice, and naan was a thin, but very generous portion. The food was so good that we returned a second night after being indecisive on where to go for dinner. The manager noticed us and provided us with mango lassi and a sampling of an aloo dish on the house, thanking us for being repeat guests. I love it when management shows such a genuine appreciation for customers like that. Service was attentive and on top of their game throughout both our visits. I'm a big Indian Food guy. This was one of the best restaurants we ate at in our 5-day visit to Dublin. My 2 colleagues had never been to an Indian restaurant so I was charged with recommendations. You're making your way down a bustling street in Dublin, clinging to the sidewalk, Jostled by lads in track suits, officer workers in business suits and roving hen parties in various states of phallic fashions when a rich, coconut, curry wafts through the crowd, tickles your nose and leads your aromatic impulses to the door or a bright, cheerful Indian/Nepali restaurant. This is a family run restaurant and although they were slammed on that Friday evening, they kept a great attitude as they coped with the hangry hordes and persistent peddlers awaiting their takeaway orders for those too fearsome, foolhardy or wise to wander out in Dublin during a balmy heat wave eve. And boy were we rewarded for it. Chicken tikka massala and a lamb dish were perfectly portioned - so we were glad we had skipped appetizers. The kind young waiter turned out to be the owner's nephew- recently arrived from Kathmandu - treated us to a palate cleaning sambuca. Five star experience at affordable prices. We were looking for an Indian restaurant in the Dublin and came across this one and do not regret it at all. The food was delicious, I got an order of the samosas, goc nann and one of the spicy Nepalese chicken dishes. The flavors were out of this world and the servers were very attentive and they all helped each other. The ambience is very loud and a bit packed as it is on a busy street in Dublin. This was our first Indian experience in Dublin so I'm not sure if that's the local style of Indian or if this was just a bizarre night...the restaurant was packed and fully reserved, but we managed to get seated almost as soon as we got in. Ordered some apps and the skewers were VERY spiced--almost overly spiced--but I'd rather have that than bland. Then we got our butter chicken and vegetable korma, which is 2 of our favorite dishes. Butter chicken was on the sweeter side, okay....Vegetable korma was like drinking butternut squash soup, which was waaaaay too sweet. We looked around and everyone seemed to be enjoying their food so we thought, okay, maybe we're just used to our own local Indian joints (I grew up in a city of California, where there's a huge Indian population)...but as we kept eating, the sweetness just got to us. I almost wonder if the chef swapped his salt and sugar by accident. Worst of all, after we got back, we both felt sick--too much sugar? I don't know--but this was not what we were expecting! read more

From the fresh papadam and chutneys that came out before the meal through all our dishes and the complimentary shot of sambuca at the end of the meal, it was a great evening. Despite the room being crowded, we were able to be seated without a reservation and while we never felt rush the tables seemed to turn at a reasonable rate. The food was fantastic. I came here on a Friday night with some coworkers. The owner told us it would be a 15 minute wait but we ended up waiting outside for about 45 minutes. It's quite cold in Dublin so I was not pleased at all. The restaurant is also quite small. We were very cramped and basically encroaching on the next table. Oops! The staff is pretty nice. I guess they knew we were waiting for so long so we did get some free food and flaming shots out of the whole experience. I got one of the korma dishes. It was not bad! It was a bit sweeter than I expected (probably because they added rose water?) and it was a bright yellow. I would eat it again though. Good food, affordable prices! My first meal in Dublin was here, and it didn't disappoint. Though not the best Indian I've ever had, it was still tasty. The service staff was great in accommodating us (brought a chair for our 2-year-old; let us put her stroller in the corner). I ate a veggie pakora, which was quite good! Made a reservation online (yesterday) and arrived right on time (5-10 early in fact for a 8:45 PM appointment) with a party of 5 and to the disappointment it was not honored. Neither the manager or the owner was apologetic and all they say is if you booked it online few hours ago then we don't honor. What logic is that. So stupid. But they offered us to wait another 45 for a table. 8:45 pm dinner was already late and was the only appointment available and now wait till 9:30 to be seated... come on. Atleast offer a voucher for future for their own stupid logic of not honoring the reservation, not that it helps but we will at least I can feel that they really messed up. read more

This place was... below average to say the least. This review is coming from eating at plenty of really good Indian restaurants in Cali and Hong Kong. We ordered Butter Chicken really thin sauce, flavor was okay, pretty bland chicken, was extremely dry, cardboard curry would of been more tender. Korma/Lamb the curry was very delicious but lamb was stringy and dry. 1000 year old lamb. Saag Paneer, good flavor cheese was great. Rice, average rice. Exceptional food with very attentive staff. Multiple starters ordered and all terrific, extra mention has to be the Mo Mo starter (dumplings) these were next level absolutely sublime rich in flavour and taste something not to be missed. All the part got mains from tikki masala, rogan josh, jalfrazei, balti with all the sauces having a lovely texture and rich taste. The different meats across the dishes were tender and the succulent and prawns just right. Rice's as you would expect cooked just right. I've been to Diwali many many times! Is one of my top 3 in Dublin! :D haha I was always going safe trying "Tikka Masala, Butter Chicken and Korma" because I don't like spicy. Then I started going wild with the menu and discovered amazing dishes! Lamb is Delicious! "The Lamb Ladovedo".... My God! I was singing!!! It had a sweet touch, texture was beautiful and had like spring onions that were doing this delicious contrast. Yes!! the rice and bread are superb! But "ME ME ME like the bread much more thinner and toasted like crunchy!" I tried a bit of my friend's dish "Chicken Shashlik" was chicken on the grill and you can add an special sauce that... After all these very good Yelp reviews I started to develop a sudden craving for Indian cuisine and showed up there on Thursday night. High expectations, but not met. The restaurant is not the prettiest from the outside, but who cares, I'm here for the food! It was relatively empty so it was easy get a table. The starters on the menu sounded delicious and from a world very far away: Archari Murga Tikka (chicken breast marinated in yogurt, €8.50), Chicken Pakora (chicken, battered and deep fried, €6.95) or Mo:Mo (Nepalese dumplings, €13.50). I went for the Saffron Malai Tikka (chicken with yogurt, €7.50) but was surprised about the portion size - they apparently take "starter" literally. 6 small pieces of chicken and I was done in under a minute. The main courses range between 10 and 18 Euro - not really inexpensive. Pasanda Chicken (€15.50) and Lamb Bhuna (€16.50) both were delicious and came with either fried, white, or lemon rice. They also brought naan bread with 3 sauces before the dish. While the food itself justifies the reviews, I don't like the value (overpriced in my opinion - 17 Euro for two small bowls of rice and the main dish) and the service. They tried too hard on selling dessert and drinks and the staff was seriously disappointed when none of their efforts worked out. They also were clumsy with the orders and forgot to bring rice and beer (elementary!). When leaving the almost empty restaurant, only one waiter actually made an effort to say good bye. Lunch 12.30-3pm offer is a really must have in Dublin. Hands down the best Indian restaurant in Dublin. Lunch offer is only €9.99 for a starter and main which comes with either rice or naan, and also includes coffee and tea. You also get Papadums as appetisers for free. How can you get such a deal in this city now!? All their meats are beautifully well seasoned and so tender. I've never tasted such tender meat in any restaurants before. It is really really good. Very authentic Indian food, especially coming from me who have lived in Asia my entire life! :) Very under rated place since everyone is now crazy over eggs and brunch food stuff. Definitely worth to come during lunch or when they have their offers. Ala cate menu can be really pricey though. The portion size may look small, but trust me it gets really filling! Felt so full! A shame. My sister first introduced me to this place a few years ago. It was mid recession Ireland, and these guys were trying hard. They were authentic, friendly, and most important, the food was good. So I called in tonight. Was solo. Early enough (9.30), so not ritually in the middle of Friday night madness in Dublin. A saddle period, if you like. It was not good. Service was poor ( forgot my 7 euro beer until I reminded you, thanks), and most important, the food was meh. The food here was great. I ordered my Tikka Masala extra spicy, which threw them a bit, but it was tasty and the onion baji and GOC naan were excellent. The issue was the misrepresentation and unethical pricing. They had a sign on the sidewalk (see picture I took from my seat in the restaurant) advertising €9.99 lunch. This was Christmas Eve, which was a Monday. When I sat down at 12:30p and was looking at the €9.99 lunch menu, the waiter said, "Oh, it's Christmas Eve so we don't have that today. You have to order from the Early Bird dinner menu" (which is the EXACT same food, but €10 more). I told them if that was the case, they needed to remove their sign from the sidewalk or at least put something over the lunch ad (which they never did while I was there). After I complained and he talked to the manager, the waiter agreed to give me the lunch pricing. I ordered naan and two glasses of wine over and above the lunch price, so they made plenty off me. But while I was there, at least 6-8 couples and groups came in (probably 15-20 people total) were seated, and when they were told they couldn't get the €9.99 lunch as advertised, got up and left. My favourite Indian without a doubt!! Poppadoms and then we shared dumplings to start and they were really nice. I had the chicken tikka for main course. Nicest I think I've had! Usual accompaniments - rice & naan bread. Service is good if a little slow but I really liked the gap between courses as you didn't feel rushed! Was not impressed by this place at all. My review is based as a tourist from NY/NJ so I know a thing or two about Indian restaurants. This place is catered toward local Irish taste perhaps -- which is fine; whatever sells. But it was not authentic and taste was terrible. Huge chunks of potato and sweet curry sauce makes you think twice if this is even actually indian food. Like the potato in aloo gobi was cut into two halves and cooked and served. The paneer makhni was sweet w/ like 3 slabs of chewy paneer.. I would not go here again. I also think this establishment is under nepali ownership sooo maybe it's more East Indian taste...certainly not the classic Punjabi North Indian food. Whatever it is it was not good. read more

I've been here twice in the last month or so. The price for the lunch menu is great. The food is pretty good and the portions were sufficient, but not huge. With such a great location this place is, inevitably, pretty busy. However, both times the waiting staff have been gruff and impolite. Zero smiles and unfriendliness off the chart. When we asked for the bill the waiter stood over us pressing us for payment before I'd even had chance to look at the bill. Will not return, even though I work very close by. read more

Absolutely beautiful dinner had here last night. First real Indian meal I've had and will certainly be going back soon. Staff were so friendly and the food was sublime. I got the tradition Nepalese curry with lamb and a side of naan bread. Curry wasn't very spicy, full of flavour and the lamb was melt in your mouth tender. The naan bread soft and delicious. Portions were very reasonable. Enjoyed with a nice bottle of tiger beer. It was on the stuffy side as the place was busy but they to our relief turned on the air con. On our walk exploring the city, we noticed the very busy crowd at Diwali at dinnertime while we were looking for The Green Hen for our dinner reservation. We decided to come to Diwali for the following night for dinner. We were very happy with this decision. The menu was creative and very different from Indian restaurants at home. We chose the Sizzling Seafood Platter and the Dumpling Appetizer to start. The food was full of distinctive flavor and appeal.
