We stopped in at Jimmy Vega's for dinner tonight as we wanted some bbq. The IDK Platter had a mix of 4 different meats and 2 sides and the food was pretty tasty. They had a white sauce which was mayo based and the. They had a spicy and a traditional bbq sauce. They also offer homemade bread and butter pickles. Best part is that 2 beers and 2 platters was $56. Outstanding ribs! Our first visit and we were very pleased with the food and friendly service. It's in a cute converted house right off Austin Avenue. Plenty of parking adjacent to the restaurant. We walked in and were greeted by the enthusiastic cashier right away. The carver in the back was prepping a large takeout order if ribs and seeing them made my decision for me. I got the rib/brisket plate and both were yummy. Ribs were truly smoked and not slathered with sauce. So I got the full flavor of the pork. The brisket was lean and tender and had a beautiful ring and bark. My sides were crack corn and banana pudding. One star off because the corn was overcooked and didn't have a taste that did anything for me. The banana pudding was really really tasty and I believe made from scratch. This is our first time to try this place. We thought a 4th of July meal was warranted. My partner and I both ordered the baby back ribs and lean brisket. The brisket was lean and very tender. It had a nice smoke ring and plenty of bark. The ribs also had a good smoke ring and the meat pulled right off the bone. My two sides were the German potato salad and banana pudding. Yes, you can get banana pudding as a side. It's homemade pudding with a homemade vanilla wafer. I've been a fan of Jimmy Vegas for a while now but was super glad to see them participate in the Two Step Inn Music Festival in Georgetown. Their entire menu is lovely and at a music festival, obviously they pared it down. I almost got the Brisket Mac and Cheese which looked creamy and delicious with the quality we've come to appreciate from Jimmy Vega's. Instead I selected a Smoked Turkey Leg and I'm so glad I did. We've all been to fairs and festivals offering smoked turkey legs and what you get is generally dry, flavorless, and more bone than meat. NOT THE CASE HERE! This thing was HUGE. I ended up pulling the meat off the bone and using the foil from the leg end to save it for later in the day. The meat was perfectly moist and tender and oh so much flavor. My only regret was not snapping a photo of this meaty perfection but take my word - it was awesome. The only "complaint" I have was that their smoked bacon was not on the festival menu because let me tell you, that stuff is amazing and I'll definitely make a trip to get some from their restaurant soon. Even after a "less than perfect weather" weekend, the staff working the booth was the same high-caliber I've come to know from their restaurant - the cashiers were friendly and inviting and those working behind the counter looked like a well-oiled machine working in very tight spaces. read more

Oh my goodness. We are bbq connoisseurs. My hubby makes the best brisket and pulled pork I've ever had.... Until today! He ordered the Breuben, and I got the pulled pork sandwich. Both of us chose the German potato salad, which came out piping hot and perfectly dressed in its vinegary sweetness. Awesome. My sandwich was topped with "not Cole" slaw, and it was the perfect balance to the pulled pork amazingness. Was in Georgetown for business and wanted lunch that wasn't "boxed". Came across this diamond in the rough. As soon as you park in the parking lot, you can smell what they're cooking. And oooooweeee! The person who took our order couldn't tell us how some of the menu items were made like the difference between the two potato salads or what was in their dreamsicle drink. There were 6 of us and between everyone we had all the meats and most of the sides. Every single meat was dry and tasted like it had been sitting out for awhile and not fresh off the pit. Its three stars at best; I hope it gets better. The place is old-timey Texas - a photo posted inside says the building was constructed in 1919 but I've loved in homes that old and this one must have had a lot of work since. It's a place that's meant "feel" old. But for BBQ you come for the food not the building. Easy-ordering and paying at the back door - which is the door you come into from the parking lot - like a lot of BBQ places. No need for menus and servers, just order from the big blackboard on the wall over the register, pay and park your butt and the food arrives. The girl at the register and the runner were both friendly in a normal way (not that goofy fake Chili's way) so that was nice, and you can watch the guys in the kitchen cutting the meat five feet away, so that's nice. The Not Cole Slaw (reminds me of "what don't you want?" from Hell or High Water) was really good with seasoning and spices I couldn't put my finger on but liked. Not at all like that gloppy stuff chains try to sell. The Mee Maw's potato salad as really just a boiled potato with a little bit of mustard and celery sprinkled on, but you know what? It was good. Next time I'll try the German style and see if I like that better. Now the meats which is why you do barbecue in the first damn place, from best to not so much. I got the three meat plate and the sausage was the best; not great, like you'd drive miles to get, but good, and better than average. Beef rib, very good, but over cooked a little tough - should have been pulled off and rested much sooner. Brisket? Well, it weren't bad, but this is Texas and brisket is a religion: if its not great, what's the point? And it wasn't great. No discernible smoke ring, just about all fat rendered and dried off (this is known as not juicy) and just no real flavor. So you can't call brisket good or okay - it's either epic or it ain't. Will I be back? You bet; it's local, a small business and no money wasted on things that don't matter, they're putting their time and effort into the food. I hope I caught them on a off-day because life is too short not to have good barbecue around. read more

I feel like a jerk because I've lived in Georgetown for quite a while and am just getting around to trying this place. It was absolutely fantastic. The restaurant is a repurposed commercially zoned craftsman house that's done up really cute inside and out. The smoke house is in view with big windows as you walk up the front door. Inside my family of 7 was greeted by Jimmy and his staff who were super friendly and attentive. We got a huge variety of meat and sides. The brisket had great bark and was cooked perfectly as was the baby back ribs. The turkey was super moist and flavorful. All of the sauces and pickles are made in house. We are huge bbq people in my house and this did not meet expectations. Brisket was dry, ribs were nothing special, sides were not good. They forgot all condiments and additional asks. I asked if they had diet Dr Pepper, he said "yes it's one of our fountain drinks" so I paid for a fountain drink....Got to the back and they do not offer any diet sodas (of course after I had already paid). Someone at my table ordered the burger, it was without question the worst burger in Texas. It was an over cooked and over salted hockey puck.
