Been here twice in the past 4 years and enjoy the atmosphere and selection. On this recent second visit, we managed to spend $132 dollars in the place and my wife and I were in shock. After getting back on the road, my wife reviewed the receipt and noticed 3 different sets of taxes on it each about $10 apiece. Yes, crazy of us to first spend $100 on candy but then get charged over $30 in taxes for it. I cannot find any information on what taxes they are authorized to charge but we will be more hesitant next time on stopping or how much we spend. read more

I visited the barn yesterday as I have done many times over the years. Love to bring the grandkids there, love the pies, a fun little experience. Saddly this May very well be my last time going there. While browsing the root beer area I noticed a couple, "unmasked" chatting with one of the store employees. As they were in front of the root beer of my choice, I said "excuse me" in order to reach the one I wanted. The employee offered to get it for me which I declined, saying Thank you - I could get it. He then proceeded to Mock me - in front of "unmasked" patron - laughingly and said that, "Oh - You must be afraid - everyone is so afraid." I assured him I was not - just cautious as I have health concerns and need to be careful. Again he said - "Yeah, afraid." Is this really the way you treat customers? Do I really need to defend myself to this inept employee? Does he know how to do his job and ask the non-masked customer to don a mask or please leave? Do you have a policy of mask wearing? Do you uphold that policy? I pointed out the non-mask wearing couple to the check out lady and questioned their policy. She shrugged her shoulders and carried on. Okay,they sell fine apples from their Minnesota Valley orchards. But come here for the amazing array of candy bars and bagged candies from all over, and from your past. I'm talking thousands of different kinds. Then check out the hundred of more different kinds of root beer (Harmon Hillebrew Hall of Fame Root Beer anyone? How about Judge Wopner Root Beer.). Or a selection of ginger beer. Oh, and there are hundred of different jigsaw puzzles from 25 to 6,000 pieces. On your way out check out the fresh bakery for pies, strudel and fudge. Such a great place! It's as fun & wonderful as you'd hope a huge candy store would be. One of the best parts is seeing other folks walk around with the of absolute joy of seeing the candy they haven't seen in years! They also sell small batch sodas/pops & chips from around the country. Puzzles galore & delicious baked good. They do NOT however accept credit cards, cash & checks only. There's signage everywhere stating this, but know this BEFORE going. Do believe there are several ATM's about, but don't quote me on that. Such an awesome no matter how old you are. Love going here and never leave unsatisfied. They have unique candy, homemade treats, fresh apples, games, toys, jerky, smoked meats, cheese curds and so much more. Neat trip to take with our kids as well. Totally worth the visit. I don't mind navigating through all the busy aisles and children just to find my favorite overseas/nostalgia candy. They have a great system for sorting the candy so it's easy to find just what you are looking for. They have a wide variety of sodas that are fun to look through too. The baked goods have a smaller variety than what you'd like to see and even less meat snacks (ex. Beef sticks and jerky). What would really top this place off is if they'd add on a section where they could serve scooped ice cream! That would be amazing. Also more seating outside would be great for nice days. It takes a long while to look through all their product if you've never been there but if you have it's easy to be in and out. Even on the busy days. The service: Great people, helpful in finding certain candies. The Food: We bought a carmel apple pie. It was fresh out of the oven when we grabbed it and put it in a box. I would recommend buying one. Apples not mushy but baked the way they should be. The carmel on top added to the excellent flavor along with a sprinkling of pecans, crust was flakey and thick. I think we paid $10.95 for it. The Candy: Overpriced, but a lot of variety. We bought really long licorice for the kids and we were going to get some black popcorn (kernals) but decided to skip it this time. Bought a dark chocolate almond bar and some black licorice bites. The store did have a lot of merchandise. The famous multi flavored licorice was not dated, also didn't have a manufacture name posted. I bought 3, 2lb bags of mushroom popcorn kernels. The popcorn was so stale and tough It couldn't be eaten.!! There goes $12.00 down the drain. We also bought some summer sausage that was also terrible!! Hours. They are open early July-Thanksgiving and do not have a phone number or website. Considering the year is 2013, I'd suggest they get with the times and at the very least, get a phone! Not cool driving all the way to Jordan from the Northern suburbs only to find out they don't open for 2 more days! I would give them more stars if they didn't make it seem as though they are in the witness protection program hiding from all of the potential customers just wanting a piece of the pie!!!! I bought a bag of apples for $6.99 from Jims Apple Farm and was dumb enough to not not check the entire bag. I assumed Jim would be straight up with me. Got home and the top apples looked beautiful. Underneath the nice looking layer were a bunch of apples that had hail dents, rotten spots and deformations. They were bad enough that if I were walking though the orchard, I wouldn't have picked them up. This was intentional, because the top layer was beautiful apples. This was deliberately done. How deceptive! Shame on you Jim! Lesson learned - check all the apples in the bag before you buy! read more

Wish this place was open year round! They have everything from the most delish baked pies to old skool candy that you can't find anywhere to a wide range of odd soda's. I love coming here! I have fallen in love with their assorted dips and of course my little one loves her Dora cookies that she can color before she eats. Born with a prominent sweet tooth, which has grown with him into his 30s, he is a sucker for anything made of 98% sugar. I was almost more excited to take him to Minnesota's Largest Candy Store than I was my five- and two-year olds. A kid at heart, indeed. Our family took a Sunday morning drive to Jim's Apple Farm, which is now also Minnesota's Largest Candy Store, located in Jordan just south of Chaska. (For chillier weather days, Zap Arcade is also in Jordan, so check out that blog post too.) It's impossible to miss the candy barn for two main reasons: 1) It sits directly on Hwy 169 and 2) Yellow painted fencing lines a full mile of the highway leading up to the also-brightly-painted big ol' yellow barn. Walking in this building makes the diabetic in me cower into the fetal position, but so long as I bring my will power and some cash, everyone in our family has a wonderfully delicious time here. Selling candies from all over the world, soda bottles in unique varieties, full tables of flavored licorice and taffy, and of course the classic stuff you used to find at the local corner gas station when you were kids (yes, they have candy cigarettes), this place will never fail to surprise you! Jim's Apple Farm, now Minnesota's Largest Candy Store, started out as just that - an apple farm. Growing apples was the main family business until 2005, when Robert Wagner decided to embrace a couple bad apple harvests and convert the barn into what could probably be deemed the most unique retail space in Minnesota. While still a family business that bases its sales on word of mouth and straight cash, they are succeeding in modern day sans a website, a credit card machine, and - the weirdest one of all - a phone number. The big yellow barn sells more than 3,000 varieties of candy sectioned off by type. They have areas designated to sour candy, gumballs, licorice, gummies, European candy, hard candy, taffies, suckers, caramel, character candy and more. Not a fan of sugar? The barn is also known for its jigsaw puzzles, jerkeys, syrup, meats, salsas and pumpkin prices (only $3.98 for any size pumpkin...and they have some BIG ones!). Of course, the one weakness this diabetic can't fight off is the homemade apple pies. Yup, they're warm and made minutes before you buy them by their 88-year old baker, who also happens to be the father of the owner. The barn is huge, but literally every inch is covered in colorful displays of temptation. The massive parking lot, painted murals, comical billboards, and mile-long yellow fencing lining Hwy 169 is apparently the only advertising this place needs. While it's not open year-round, Minnesota's Largest Candy Store sure know how to put the sweetest of icings on two of the greatest seasons Minnesota offers. Fit for what ages? "Like a kid in a candy store" is more than an expression at Jim's. If you can eat, you will enjoy the barn. Grab a shopping basket and go to town collecting fun variations of old-school candy with your kiddos, from candy buttons to Necco wafers. Obviously, know your child's sugar tolerance and maybe set some limits, but after that boring conversation is had, go to town and have fun! Weekends can be incredibly busy, so hang on to little ones, but I don't think I can even set an age limit on this one because kids of all ages will love it, including my 34-year old hubby. How much are we talkin? Gas money from your house to Jordan + however much you spend on sugary goodness should about cover it. Everything is priced good n' cheap, but this is a CASH ONLY business and the ATM has a $3 fee if you need to use it. My caramel apple pie cost $12 and my son's gumball machine was $5. Small price to pay for the size of the smiles they created. Candy, fudge, popcorn, and sodas range quite widely in price, but seriously...it's just...so fun. Want some tips? Most important tip: Bring Cash. They have six registers run by sweet family-business relatives who are obviously used to saying, "Sorry, we don't take credit cards, but the ATM is over there." Weekends can be insane with body-to-body people, but weekdays are fantastic! Grab a basket as you walk in. Do not grab a pumpkin as you walk in. They work on the honor system, so you simply tell your cashier how many pumpkins you're buying and pick them up on the way to your car. A minor point, but something worth mentioning, is to check the expiration dates on some of the candies. Obviously this is unintentional, but you can't have thousands of varieties of candies and keep them all up to date all the time, so just keep an eye out. read more

Believe it or not, I'm a fan of salty licorice! When we came upon a roadside store featuring "56 Kinds of Licorice" in Jordan, Minnesota, we just had to stop. It was here at Jim's Apple Farm we tried salty licorice for the first time. There were several varieties of salty, so as uninformed novices we tried a number of them. Delicious. We were instantly addicted. Jim's also has a wide variety of root beers (birch beers, sarsaparilla, etc), which we spent quite some time investigating. We made several purchases in the "bacon" aisle, including bacon mints, candies and other goodies. A fun stop on any road trip in the area. read more

This is a really fun stop of the highway 169. It's basically a really big specialty food store that sells all kinds of locally made and grown items. When we went they had a taster of 10 different variety of apples (so awesome!). Plus they have a bakery selling delicious, delicious apple strudel. I only bought the strudel because everybody else was... and it was the best apple strudel I have ever eaten. They also sell lefse, pie and other baked goods. They have all kinds of jams and sauces. Plus they have local meats and sausages. Asides from local goods, they also sell all kinds of candy and over 150 varieties of root beer! read more

Must go to this place! I have a huge sweet tooth, so when I heard about this place I had to stop by. I have sense been there several times, and they are always packed. They have some very hard to find candies, and some common ones. Basically If there was a candy you had once, but could not find it again... this is the place to look for it. As for the soda selection... wow I had no clue there where that many different kinds of root beer still being bottled in glass bottles, and the root beer is only a small section of everything that they have. They also have apples, and apple pies, I am told they are good but I have not tried any for myself yet. Things can get a little pricy. My last trip there I walked away with 1 paper grocery bag and a 6 pack of root beer, it cost me $63.00. It would be nice if they took credit and debit cards; however, it is cash or check only. This was my second time here this year. First time was middle of the weekday with a colleague driving back to St Paul from Mankato for work. There weren't many people in there which allowed us to soak in the crazy take me back to when I was a kid in a candy shop time. It's almost overwhelming how much they have; candy from the 1970's to today, different flavors of bottled pop, chocolate galore, apples, pies, the list goes on. Today I brought my family and being that it was a Saturday at 1pm, the placed was crammed. Almost obnoxiously busy but we knew it might be now that fall is here. As long as there's no screaming babies or rude people, the line goes pretty fast. All and all it was a good day. Definitely worth a once a year trip from the cities. I was in the store today about 4:00 and it was not very busy. They seem to have enlarged the store. More candy!!! Stuff you haven't seen since you were a child, and lots more. Bought my fudge, pecan log and apple strudel, that I have not had since last summer. They have so many puzzles up high, so the store is really packed with good things. I live near here, so I do go out there for their pies and apple strudel for special events. There is so many bottled pops, licorish, popcorn, candy puzzles, beef jerky, and canned jellies and salsa. For a place that recognizes themselves as having the "largest soda selection" - they do a horrible job of checking expiration dates. When I got home, I found that the bottles of all natural ginger ale I bought had expired over ONE YEAR ago. I would recommend everybody check the dates of the things they buy there. Yes, I should have checked the date myself, but it is easy to forget to do that when the store is crammed with so many people and products. They have no phone number, and I found no way to contact them to tell them about their expired products. I honestly hope that they read this message and then purge all their expired sodas. This is disappointing to spend so much on sodas there and then get home to find out they are all very expired! This definitely put a huge damper on my first visit to MN's Largest Candy Store/Jim's Apple Farm. read more

BUYER BEWARE... They do not accept credit cards or debit cards you would think it was 1920.They only accept cash or a check that's right a paper check you know that thing that nobody else takes anymore. Expired candy all over the place. I see the owner commented that they clear out the store and give it back to the supplier and restock back in May I'm calling BS.Its July 18th and we found many items that looked odd and where expired in June and july.A distributor is not going to send something that expires less than a month. we ended up getting a few candies and some pecan pralines that were supposedly fresh.They were nasty tasting I don't know who makes them for them but they need a new supplier it was a waste of money.A couple of the candys where old enough that the sugar was grainy in it.Way over priced double the price if not more and it's not really anything special you can't get cheaper online and fresh from a distributor not outdated. So this store is an oasis in the middle of nowhere. My wife and I have been here a few times and I can honestly say, its an amazing experience every time. After driving by several times, I decided i wanted to stop in and check out the big yellow barn claiming to be the largest candy store in Minnesota. They also advertise pies, apples and apple smoked meats. So i thought I'd find some thing of interest in there. WOW was I surprised! They had so many different things! Yes there was every possible candy you could think of including many of your childhood favorites! There were meats, pies, home made candies, and nutrolls. They also have things like desert and baked good mixes, jellies, jams, salsas, dips, sauces, popcorn, soup mixes, syrups, pretzels, apple chips, games, novelty band aids, and some baking utensils and cookie cutters and such. There was a large assortments of licorice, and salt water taffies. They had fudges and chocolates. There was a HUGE assortment of bottles pops, in every flavor imaginable. They had apples and even some fun kits for making corn dogs, and funnel cakes and other such treats. This is definitely some where i would go again. They don't take cards. There is an ATM. Me and my girlfriend went to the candy store to get , well you know, candy and also picked up some corn. It loked good enough alright but it turns out it was FIELD CORN !!! Since we are not cattle, we didn't like it AT ALL. That's bad enough but when I called to ask that they send me a check for the cow food we bought, the number on the website was disconnected.
