I wanted to broaden my training and take a hiatus but still drop back in for open mats and the occasional class. Instead of acting like a mature business owner, Deacon Mike got physical and escorted me out. They come off as kind honest people until you mention training at other schools. The reason I'm going out of my way to write this review is to warn people to steer clear of this twisted academy. A couple of the many reasons I'm leaving a one star review because this school operates under an alternative agenda. They take advantage of kind people. The academy is not inclusive. I have witnessed misogynistic characteristics and anti LGBTQ comments by the owner, Mike. Two of their instructors have domestic violence history, one of which runs the kids BJJ program. To leave the school you must turn in a letter stating so. I handed my letter to leave the school to the owner, who reacted in a hot headed way. Meaning, this is when my jacket was grabbed and I was thrown out. This is after 6 years at the school. The owner pushes his religious beliefs on people, and deflects issues as somebody else's fault. He likes to label others' problems as having "victim mentality" and not his prerogative. He is immature, manipulative, and acts like he cares until you might decide to train elsewhere.

They were testing kids in groups of 3 and everyone got a medal. When it was my grandsons turn he was in a group of 4. He lost by 1/10 of a percent.His group was the only group that had 4 kids in it. One of the judges gave him a medal and at that point the owner started yelling there's no medals for 4th place and made him give the medal back. The look on my grandsons face was heartbreaking but he remained calm and displayed great sportsmanship and even clapped for the next group of 3 kids who were called up to compete and got medals. This guy was heartless and for someone who works with kids on a daily basis he displayed a genuine lack of insensitivity toward a young boy. I would not recommend this business to anyone and unless you're a member of that dojo do not participate in any competition there they are definitely unfair to anyone who does not train there.

Excellent program…read more My son (now 9 .. started at age 8) tested karate during a 4 week after school program held at his school in September 2016; he really enjoyed it so he signed up for another 6 weeks at the karate center itself. He then decided this is something he wants to stick with and we signed up for a year. He has now started his 2nd year. The students are broken up in different time slots based on ages and belt levels. It's an open schedule, so it's up to you how often your child comes (meaning, there may be 4 time slots scheduled for your child's group, but you can choose to show up 1-4 times .. I try to bring my son twice a week). The students work on their skills under senseis. There is stripe testing every few weeks until your child reaches 3 stripes (on their belt) and then they move up to their next belt level. There is a belt ceremony held on a Saturday that is about an hour long for all of the kids (or adults, graded separately) being tested for their next belt. If your child can't make it, they will do the test at the end of a regular class and present your child their next belt and certificate. The kids feel so proud when they move up to a new belt and the senseis give them the acknowledgement they deserve. There is also sparring here that is optional at the children's age level. If you choose, they can buy sparring equipment and come to a separate class for that. My son's confidence tremendously improved since starting karate. I'm not sure if it's a coincidence, but they seem to be related for sure. The senseis also sit around with the kids after class and usually will have a word of the week in which they will discuss what it means and allow the kids to give personal examples of it. For example, I've seen them discuss the words "discipline" and "integrity". This is one of the more expensive activities my son has done, but I find it valuable in many ways .. like I said, it's not just the skill he is learning but his sense of self and confidence. There are different payment options but I choose to pay annually in full which gives a little discount. The total for a year about $1325 and it costs $40 per belt, which is every 2 month or so .. give or take .. One negative: it always smells like feet in there because well let's face it .. 20 or so kids with their shoes off and sweaty piggies is bound to stink!

That kind of "warm up" without music or other engagement for 20 min might be ok for older kids, but not toddlers. The class is low energy, slow-going. Kids couldn't sit still. They eventually started running around, to the dislike of the instructor. In my view Rolly Pollies provides better "gymnastics" at this age than Turners.

Sign up was a breeze and they even offered an intro price for your first class when you are a new client. I love that they offer 2 class types Form and Function. Form is a slower paced class with deliberate movements perfect for beginners and Function is more challenging, the pace is a little faster but it's still ok for most all levels. This made it easy and not intimidating to sign up and get in easily. The space is the old food terminal and is renovated with a cool industrial feel. There was plenty of space in the class area and it didn't feel cramped which was awesome. Doug was able to demo the sequences before we started each one, it was great that it was easy to see and hear him while he demoed. I tried the Function class which was challenging and a good pace for me. It was definitely contemporary Pilates but more on the side of a workout that was on a reformer and less classical feeling. I don't say that as a negative at all. But with so many Pilates classes popping up it's hard to know everyone's teaching style. The receiving room was cozy and beautiful. Class began and ended in there. It felt like a community before and after class which is a nice touch. They have balanced body allegro reformers.

Therefore, they had us all take off our shoes but keep our socks on. I'd also recommend wearing gym clothes, as you'll want the flexibility and may start to break a sweat too! They provided lightsabers to use during the class and taught us the basics- proper grip, footwork, and five moves. There were 2 instructors and 6 students, this was a great ratio as the instructors helped us individually with the movements. They were also very patient with us which was nice since some of the sequences were complex. At the end of the training they gave us a demo of more complex sequences and discussed what each phase of their coursework covers if we'd like to sign up for a membership. Overall- had a great experience and I would highly recommend checking them out!
