The first mile and a half is fairly flat and has a spectacular view of the creek, mountains, flowers and berries I've ever seen in such an accessible location. It then shifts to an gentle uphill hike without boreal shade. I recommend a machete if you plan on going further. The Devils Club is wicked beyond this point unless it's fall. There is absolutely no cell service here so be sure to bring emergency supplies and appropriate preparation for Alaskan animals and volatile weather.

Gaft, I cannot pronounce this place!!…read more Ptarmigan is part of the Chugach National Forest off Mile 23 on Seward Highway. If you're on your way to Harding Icefield/ Exit Glacier or back to Anchroage, Ptarmigan is worth a stop! So thanks to my hyper active bladder and my constant imbibing of crisp glacier water, I really needed to pee!!!! Thankfully, toilets were not far off and found ourselves here. Toilet is standard outhouse thing. Nothing fancy. But what IS cool is that there is fish viewing from Aug-Sept!!! FREE OF CHARGE!! We saw some tours wanting to charge for this, psh!!! Anyway, we got to the side of the creek... and saw red sockeye salmon swimming against current... waiting to mate, lay eggs and die =(. There were so many of them too!!! Here's something I didn't know...salmon gets its red color when they are spawning (so you don't want to eat these since they are old). When they are young, they are silver in color. Huh! =) Also (didn't know this), but apparently there is an abundance of rainbow trout during mating season. They come and eat up the salmon eggs (roe). Luckily, people are able to fish for rainbow trout and dolly varden fish (june 11 - may 1st). Absolutely no salmon fishing all season!! We did see some fishers there, but they told us that they were there for catch & release only.

Having lived in Alaska 6 years I honestly have never stoped in moose pass, only obeyed the speed limit and slowed down while passing though. The campground is super easy to find (especially when obeying the speed limit). They have a sign out on the road. The camp host was beyond friendly. We let her know it was our first time and we were hoping for a spot a little more secluded so we could work out any kinks and hangout with our pups. She put us in a location that was easy for us to back into and we isn't have any camp neighbors within a visual radius. A few of the spots do but up against the highway so you'll have some street noise, but that mellowed down around 10pm. There was a group fire pit where folks brought some drinks and hung out. Super friendly place! The next morning we went for a walk down to the float plane docs and along the railroad tracks. Such a cute little town and a nice break from the hustle and bustle of Seward.

Angels Rest is located on Lowell Point just 2 miles down the dirt road form Seward and is an amazing place to get away for the weekend. My wife and I got engaged there early last year and just recently went back. We stayed in the Wing Cabin both times and just loved it. It had a great little kitchen and 2 rocking chairs in from of the two large windows overlooking the bay and the mountains. The binoculars are a great treat for watching the sea life play just off shore. Don't forget to bring a book!! It is real close to town and it's really not that far from Safeway. They offer a 5% discount for paying in cash. The bed was extremely comfortable too!! The cabins were very clean and the kitchen has enough plates, silverware, and cooking utensils for making what ever floats your boat. The kitchen also has a small fridge and they also provide a cooler to use. On the deck there is a gas BBQ grill and each cabin has it's own fire pit outside for use when warm enough. I believe they also sell ice and firewood if you forget yours. They are very good about getting back to you quickly if they are not able to answer the phone. We spent four nights in the Gatehouse Cabin at Angel's Rest in late June. The cabin has a…read morekitchenette with mini fridge, two burner gas stove, toaster and microwave. There are lots of great restaurant options in Seward, but it's so nice to be able to make your own breakfasts in your jammies. The kitchenette also came in handy for dinner one night, after we picked up fresh salmon near the pier at Capt Jack's. The cabin is surrounded by plants and trees that make it feel cozy and private, even though there are other cabins around it - so much nicer than staying in a hotel with hordes of other tourists surrounded by parking lots. There's a porch with fantastic water views, a small grill and two chairs. We picked up firewood and marshmallows for the firepit out front, which has a small bench. The stony beach is populated with ducks, gulls and cormorants tottering around the tidepools. On our last night we saw three eagles fishing, a sea otter lounging in the surf, and a harbor seal swim by. There were beautiful, tiny hummingbirds that visited the feeders on the porch every day. A number of kayak rental places dotted the road toward Lowell Point State Rec park - which is a short walk down the beach, and has some great hikes. Paul and Lynda have provided a wealth of information in a binder on tons of hikes and scenic drives all over the area, and well as recommendations for dining, tours, etc. The cabin is artistic-rustic-style, with pine ceilings and handmade headboard, but far more comfortable than we expected. The lovely accommodations and setting, coupled with the hosts' attention to detail and quick response to questions, make this the perfect place for your visit to the Kenai peninsula.

All in all we were very happy with the accommodations. Every room had 2 beds - 1 queen and 1 twin with a shared bathroom, living space and dining area. The staff made breakfast each morning which consisted of muffins, bagels, toast, fruit, coffee, tea and juice. Certainly not elaborate but satisfactory for the $60 per night for 3. The campground has RV, Tent and Bed&Breakfast rooms. Its also located on the Kenai river and is about 5 minutes drive from the Russian/Kenai confluence. Considering your options in Cooper Landing. Kenai Riverside Campground is pretty nice and the staff go out of their way to help make your stay a good one.

Made reservations to stay at a tent site here last week. When we showed up it looked like there…read morewere a bunch of vehicles that had been parked there for a very long time... almost as if they were using some of their land as a vehicle storage lot. However, we were staying at the tent sites near the river, so we figured we'd be far enough away that it wouldn't matter. We checked in and the staff was very friendly. They told us which spot we'd be staying in, gave us a map, and made sure we knew where we were going. When we went to our assigned spot, there was nowhere to put a tent without sleeping tree roots or very rocky ground. It was also RIGHT next to a very dusty road. There were some other open tent spots, so we went back to the office to see if we could get a spot that was a little further from the dusty road and had a grassy area to pitch a tent. The staff offered their apologies but said that all the spots were reserved. We ended up going to the state run campground and lucked out finding a spot available there. Much nicer and even a few bucks cheaper than this place. The staff was nice and it is nice to be so close to the river, but I wouldn't recommend this place for tent campers. Might be alright for someone who is in an rv, but if you're looking for tent camping I would really recommend going someplace else.

Exposed light fixtures, unfinished trim...it feels like a remodel was started but things stalled out. The attendant was scarcely present, despite our requests for an audience. We were greeted by a note on the door even though we arrived during prime receiving hours. I said 'hello' when I saw her in the hallway while bringing in our luggage and she just put her head down and went on to load the washing machine without even so much as a smile. Our request to change payment methods went unheeded as she never answered our texts while we were standing outside her door. I understand that you may not be a people person, but it literally felt like she was going out of her way to avoid people. We spent 9 days in Alaska and visited a lot of lodges, motels, Bed and Breakfasts and by far...this was the worst and most expensive...even in Anchorage where one of the airport motels was a bit sketch, we found friendlier staff and a complimentary breakfast. I get it that resources can be hard to come by but a bowl of fresh fruit, a box of cereal, and some pastries from Costco would at least help guests digest the premium price tag on what amounts to a boarding house. We made use of the common space and made our own breakfast in the kitchen but that required planning and hoping we wouldn't be backed up waiting to use the stove or other utensils, plates, etc. With so many tours and activities with early start times in the area, it would have been nice to just grab and go...I feel like for what this place costs they owe you that much. Nonetheless, 3 stars for offering a bare bones room with beds...no frills, no personality, and a hermit attendant...seems more than fair. Hopefully this place wakes up to the potential they have to offer...but honestly, from my experience...it's just a little too lazy to even try. Sleep here if you have no other options...but that's about all it's good for...

This was a nice place to stay during our trip to Seward. It is conveniently located close to exit…read moreglacier and about 2-3miles from downtown Seward. The lodge is pretty much a bed&breakfast minus the breakfast part. They have a communal kitchen that guests can use as well as refrigerator both on the 1st and 2nd floor. They also have a firepit outside for guests to use. The room was neat and spacious. The only thing I wish they can improve on is to add provision to hang clothes. They don't have a front desk but the family lives onsite and they leave their number at the door in case we need to reach them. I did call ahead to let them know of my late check-in (8pm) which wasn't an issue with them. I did notice few people checkin in as late as 10.30pm.

Its about 10 miles (~12 nautical miles) from Seward. All Alaska heritage tour boats seem to stop here. But after the guests leave, the island is ONLY for the folks who stay and some staff. There were about 4 cabins. If I added the restaurant and activities desk, there would probably be just around 6 cabins in the whole island. There's cool blue ocean right in front of you and a gorgeous lake behind the cabins...That's it! They warned us that because blueberries were ripening, there had been bear sightings on the island the previous day. The island was great for sea-shelling, I wasn't too good at it, but hey, with the whole island practically to yourself, you can always try ;) Food is catered by an executive chef on the premise. We had mentioned I was vegetarian, so they made sure there were options. For dinner, I had risotto and grilled zucchini with locally picked blueberry cobbler. YUMMM We had gone sea kayaking during the day - it was surreal. Just pristine waters and you in your kayak. In the evening we could see salmon spawn everywhere on the water. It was quite a spectacle. The lodge was indeed pricey, but totally worth EVERY penny.

My fiancé and I stayed here late June in 2020. Since the trains were not running currently, the lodge was even more secluded than usual. It usually has up to 16 guests, 8 cabins, on site and when we were here, we ended up only have 4 guests there. As soon as we arrived, the staff greeted us warmly and the manager, Brandon, introduced himself and stated whatever we wanted or desired they would help achieve that or come close to it. He stated he or someone else would always be available for questions or concerns, and he did not disappoint. The cabins were beautiful and cozy. There are no outlets in the room which we did not mind as the main area has plenty available. I was able to charge my camera batteries without an issue as well. Wi-Fi worked great in this area but not in the cabins, so needing to charge your phone while in the cabin was not necessary. We stayed at the puffin cabin which had a great view of the bay and the lake just behind the cabin where we spotted river otters and baby ducks. The chef was from Vero Beach, FL which is close to my hometown. His cooking was phenomenal and kept you excited for the next meal. This is top dollar dining at its finest, no meal tasted the same and the meals were well executed. I am a self-proclaimed "foodie" and would not be this kind if not so deserved. Brandon told us about a hike, a bit on the challenging side, was available for us and explained how to get there and where to get some great views/pictures. This hike was not even recorded on my hiking app, All Trails, so I added it for others to use as a guide. Fox Island flora and landscape is like nothing I have ever seen, its damp and brittle which can make or break this hike from moderate to challenging, especially with the steep incline. On our second day there we were unable to do kayaking secondary to the tour personal being exposed to COVID, so precautionary measures were taken. Although at first this really bummed us out, we asked if they had any fishing rods which we could use to try to catch fish. Luckily, Brandon was on it, and an employee had a couple rods and lures for us to use. The chef brought us out to the "spot" on the end of the bay where the employee stated he would catch rock fish, and boy did we! (and when I say we I mean my fiancé, all I caught was seaweed and kelp, whoomph). The chef cooked the rock fish for dinner and it beyond delicious, reminded me of grouper and kind of looked like it too! We also got a show when the chef put the rock fish scraps back into the ocean and watch 2 bald eagles fight for the winnings--just WOW!! Brandon also told us if we were feeling up to it, we could jump off the dock into the frigid Alaskan waters, and you do not have to dare me to adventure. It was a beautifully warm day, and although my limbs went numb as soon as I hit the water, as soon as you get out you are instantly warm--so STRANGE for this Florida native. Every night they offered a beach fire with smores which we gladly accepted. The staff was cautious wearing masks when around guests and I never once felt unsafe. The day out you enjoy a 5-hour boat ride to explore the Fjords and see wildlife, we saw humpback whales, plenty of seals, puffins, an enormous number of seabirds, and the Aialik Glacier. The captain of the tour boat was incredibly knowledgeable about the Fjords and the boat was big enough with a catamaran style hull that allowed its massive boat to take on waves, so that I never once felt seasick. The beauty of Fox Island, the delicious food, and the attentive staff with opportunities for adventure, and the enjoyable Fjords boat tour allow me to absolutely recommend this lodge. The price is beyond worth every penny. I would ask that the lodge acquire more fishing equipment because this activity became a highlight for us both and think future guests would appreciate it as well. Stephen and I thank the staff for everything they did for us while we there and making the last bit of our Alaska trip incredibly memorable.

I may have been a little extra excited when I arrived since I had just spent the last 5 days kayaking around Aialik Bay and probably would have loved any place with a hot shower and a warm bed, but once you meet Dave and Wendy, it feels like you're crashing over at a friend's house. Anyone heading to Seward should definitely stay here; you won't regret it.

Wendy was very accommodating, when two of our crew, me included, could not make the kayak trip, and found other people to use the slot, and helped us to make alternate arrangements. Bear Paw is a great place to stay in Seward, & especially if you plan to go kayaking.
