The wife and I decided to go to JL beers in Grand Forks, North Dakota. It had a very long bar. The inside had about five long tables to seat people and had several TVs for a sports bar feel. I had the Ode to grapefruit American IPA it was smooth and delicious with a hint of grapefruit. We sat at a booth, but waited and waited for Service. 4 other folks came in and sat at the bar. They we're promptly served and actually had their food served to them before the server even came back to take our drink order. We then move to the bar where we were promptly served, drink orders with food. my wife and I split the Nashville chicken and a side of beer, cheese and fries. The Nashville chicken had a good taste however it was pretty thin the beer cheese fries were delicious. However they came out way after our chicken was served. I will give it a 5+ for the beer, A 3 for the food, zero for the Service if you're setting at a table and a three for the prompt, but not too friendly bar made. read more

It wasn't nasty, don't get me wrong, but it wasn't flavorful. I eventually opted for the Cajun sauce to put on there, but that wasn't that flavorful either. The Cajun sauce tasted like the ketchup Mayo combo with seasoning for decor. Bbq seasoned fries: I didn't eat the fries because they were a bit on the salty side. I usually like seasoned fries, but this was a bit much. It doesn't look like it, but the flavor is strong for fries. They move fast in there though, so I'll give them that. Went in with our newborn baby and sat at the back table with him on the inside set against the wall so he was over 3 feet from the bar. The waitress came and said we had to leave since they were 21+ only. We knew this already before we came but looked into North Dakota laws and found we are legally able to bring him in if he's with us, three feet from the bar, and it's before 10pm. Before trying out JL Beers, I was told this is the best burger place in Grand Forks, and it didn't disappoint. The burgers were amazing! My favorite part were the buns; so buttery and soft but toasted enough that it could hold the burger together. I order the coleslaw burger but added tomatoes for $0.79 and really enjoyed it. It was juicy and the burger patty itself was seasoned well. My table also ordered the bacon jam burger which they said was good (and it looked good too)! Service was great, too! My waitress, Jessica, checked in often enough but not too much. Our drinks were refilled at appropriate times and was always there if we needed anything. The ambiance was nice too! It is definitely more bar vibes than a sit down restaurant. I didn't try any of their beers, but they seemed to be popular with the other tables so it should be worth trying if you go. One thing I would have liked to have known before going was how pricing worked. The price next to the burgers is solely for the burger. No fries or chips. Those are an extra couple of dollars as is any addition toppings or sauces you want in the burger or for dipping. Just a heads up so you don't assume incorrectly like I did. Best specialty burgers in the midwest. I routinely go to JL Beers for the burgers and fries. Totally Slawsome burger is my all time favorite burger. I wish they would adopt the smash burger though. Perhaps the specialty burgers with two smash patties instead of the one patty. The loaded fries (original fries) with beer cheese is could very well be my most craved food. An absolute must have when coming to JL. Finally, their chips are absolutely phenomenal. It's almost exactly 2 years from my last stop since we are back in town for a couple weeks. I wasn't in the store long enough to smell the air if they corrected the grease smell. I did see a sign that they have a machine cleaning the air a few times an hour. Previously, we didn't have kids now we have 2 under 2 now, and we were turned away at noonish for lunch. I guess they label themselves as a bar. I thought it was just a normal brewpub kind of place selling burgers. In past experiences, these style of establishment would stop letting kids in after 8 pm kind of thing. Found it odd to turn us away for lunch. Oh well, no harm. I was told ahead of time the burgers were fantastic and they didn't disappoint, I had both the Cheeseburger and regular Hamburger there and both were well prepared and tasted great. Also had a flight of beers which were loaded on a wooden tray with sampling glasses. The staff was both affable and customer service oriented. JL Beers was suggested to me by a friend who went to school at UND - he said it was the best burger he'd ever had. While I can't agree with that, the burger was pretty darn good and I love the choices of flavor on the fries and chips. Dipping sauces are a huge plus, too. And prices? Great! Got the burger, fries, and dip for under $10 (but then I blew the budget by getting a growler of one of the sour beers to go). Staff here were absolutely fantastic - they were infinitely patient with my friend, who has a severe allergy and asked a ton of questions as to how the burgers are cooked. On food alone, this tiny little bar gets all the stars! The burgers are yummy, meaning so full of flavor they just melt in your mouth. We were seated where we saw the process of how they cook them happens. I was disappointed to see that the burgers seem pre-made, which is why I docked a star above. The large press comes down on multiple meat patties and cooks them like a large foreman grill. Then garnishes are applied, chips are added and the food comes out quickly to you in a basket. Don't forget to pair your burger with a local brew. Since I am not from this area, I had never heard of any of the beers. The server was somewhat helpful, but I really just randomly picked a few to try. I really can't even remember which one I liked. This is not a place for a vegetarian or non-beef eater. Had an excellent experience here! Stopped in for the Deschutes tap takeover, and some grub. We ordered the Buffalo Blu fresh cut fries... delicious! I ate the Mt. Mushmore burger substituted the beef burger with the black bean, and my boyfriend ate the Original Hamburger Stand Burger w/cheese. We were both incredibly happy with our meals! Everything tasted fresh, nothing was soggy, it was excellent! Staff was super friendly and helpful too!
