Could not recommend more! I had been co-sleeping with my 2yo daughter, experiencing choppy naps, and dealing with a very late bedtime (10pm ish) for many months before asking for Joan's help. I just wasn't sure where to start, and how to push through the challenges I knew were inevitable. Joan made a plan and guided me through every step. It wasn't easy but Joan had prepared me for that. I didn't feel uncertain about what we were doing. Along with her experience and wisdom in all things sleep, Joan has such a calm and reassuring demeanor, so you feel incredibly supported through the whole experience. We caught up twice a week on zoom to check in Joan uses a gentle approach which I loved. It took about 4 weeks for my daughter to get to the point where I can put her in the crib 100% awake and she takes herself off to sleep without assistance. The first 5 days/nights were pretty intense, but it's amazing how quickly my little one was able to learn how to sleep by herself, and now at a reasonable hour! Thank you for everything, Joan! We hired Joan back in February of this year when our daughter was almost 10 months old. She was up every couple hours and we were exhausted! We had a great first zoom meeting with her and then received a very detailed plan. She was always checking in via text and offering phone calls anytime. Wow, where to start? We hired Joan along with another night doula (also fabulous), to help with the "transition" of being new parents. Joan started when he was five or so days old and stayed with us for 3 months+. Everyone tells you about the night times, and how you'll get no sleep, and you're up every hour, and part of that is true, but having Joan there helping me through the best ways to breastfed, burping, and just generally answering questions and providing comforting advice made getting up at 1am, 3am and 5am not so bad. Really. Equally, she would change his diaper and burp him so I could pop back into bed for those 20 extra minutes, which she was always good and reminding me to take! As our son was able to take a bottle, Joan would then feed him his night feeds. Bliss!! But even though I wasn't in his room, she always made notes on his sleeping, feeding and popping (sorry :-)) patterns so we knew how he was doing during those few hours. Plus, she would write down helpful tips, products (for baby and mum), and websites etc. on these notes for us to read in the morning. My husband and I are often told how easy our son is, and we always attribute a lot to his demeanor to the support and experience Joan gave us, and showed our son. Experienced, always on time, kind and non-judgmental. She cared for the family, and that really showed everyday she came to our home. Joan is simply the best - truly wonderful! After working with two other sleep consultants that didn't quite work for our family and leaving us without much hope, I can honestly say I wish we had contacted Joan in the first place. I had so much anxiety and stress around our son's sleep challenges - not to mention sleep deprivation. I had almost given up hope in sleep consultants, but was desperate and tried to give it one last shot. Even in the first phone call, Joan was so patient, kind, warm, knowledgeable, and very genuine. Our sweet baby boy was always an excellent night sleeper from birth. For the first 7 mos of his life he slept completely independently in his bassinet or crib in our room. Problem was he was a horrid napper. When he was a newborn his naps were hit or miss and as he got older he would nap but ONLY while being held. He refused to sleep in his crib for naps. My husband had a long generous paternity leave, my mother lives with us, and I resigned from my position to stay home with him, so there was always someone there to hold him. It was working, but starting to weigh on everyone. Then from all the holding, and just constant strain on my back my back went completely out for an entire week and a half. That sent my sons sleeping into a tailspin and I knew I could no longer give him contact naps for my sake and his. I tried several sleep training tactics after doing research, and joining a sleep training social media group. Some of these tactics seemed so harsh and our son was not making any progress. He would scream in his crib, not just cry. He would not settle no matter what. I looked for a sleep consultant in my area and luckily found Joan. We set up a phone consultation and had a nice chat. I explained to her my son was extremely independent in all aspects of his learning but would not nap without contact. She explained it's all about finding the right tactic for each specific personality and it does not have to be harsh. My husband and I talked about it over the weekend and while we were both skeptical that the contact naps would stop, we decided to go for it. Based on what we told Joan about our lives, son, and background, she came up with a detailed and specific plan to implement for his napping and suggested that if I felt comfortable with it to also transition him into his standard crib in his nursery. I promised that I would give it my all. She suggested that since he was so independent and strong willed a more hands on approach may be appropriate with a pick up put down method. I thought my goodness I'll have to pick him up a billion times based on the crying he's done previously. The first day was a little nerve wracking for me and baby but went surprisingly well. He even slept the whole night in his crib in his room. Second day went even better. By the 3rd day implementing Joan's method tailored to my sons personality, he was sleeping two solid naps and an entire night in his crib in his own room. To say I was shocked and elated was an understatement. Because of the plan we chose we had Joan's support over the following month. During that time he was reaching several different milestones so anytime something new would pop up that affected his sleep Joan always had the answer. Joan is so competent, kind, and relatable in all she does. We hired her really as a last ditch effort and had little hope that it would work. It really was a piece of cake with Joan's expertise. We are excited that Joan is now a postpartum night doula. Joan was actually our nanny for our twins, beginning at three months old. Looking back, we were young and naive about hiring a nanny and we completely lucked out when we interviewed and hired Joan. One of Joan's greatest strengths is her professionalism. She is always very clear about her role, her contribution to our family, and the best possible ways to help in any given situation. We were always extremely comfortable about having her in our home and working with our children in their infancy. Joan has terrific experience with babies and toddlers and was always the clear expert on any issue. Joan takes great pride in her work - she was always studying to get better, looking at new recipes to fix food for our children, looking for new parks and places to take them. Joan also has a particular passion for babies and the exciting but scary time just after babies are born. She is a real expert in this area. I would trust Joan's knowledge, expertise, and instincts on any issue regarding a baby. She is particularly helpful because, especially for first children, none of us know anything when they are first born. And she got us through twins! I can only imagine how terrific she would be with one baby! We would hire her again in a moment to do anything related to taking care and helping parents through infancy. We are so glad she is out there working as a doula...no doubt many families will benefit in the future from her care, her knowledge, her commitment, and her warmth and sense of fun. Joan is fantastic, plain and simple. She provided consistent support, reassurance -- not to mention valuable hours of sleep after the birth of our first child. It's important that you feel a good rapport with your doula during this time and Joan is fantastic at providing guidance when you need it, but doing so in a gentle and reassuring manner. Most importantly, she took fantastic care of our daughter (so patient and loving), and she also was a wonderful support for me (helping with baby laundry, baby bottles, etc). She's a wonderful educational resource -- we'd start each evening chatting about our latest concern or issue, and I'd often wake up to a couple of relevant handouts or notes the next morning. I have to admit that I wasn't sure whether or not bringing in a night doula would be an unneeded extravagance after the birth of my child, but I can absolutely say that this was one of the best investments we've made. read more
