I don't sew. I don't do anything crafty. Yet I found myself at JOANN Fabrics and Crafts. I needed a picture frame and my friend suggested we stop here. I was very pleasantly surprised. The store is big, bright and orderly. It seemed very clean and Covid aware. The huge lot offers tons of easy parking. I was surprised to see so many different items available. They had a ton of things in so many departments. In addition to fabric and crafts, they had holiday items, home decor, floral and even snacks. The staff was very helpful and pleasant. The assisted me with ease. I found the perfect frame and will remember to stop by this store the next time I'm in need of any of their wonderful offerings. read more

Check your receipt before leaving the counter!!! Their registers aren't keeping up with some of their advertised discounts. With stores closing in the Chicago area, they say all sales are final. I bought multiple holiday items from an area that had multiple signs saying 70% off. But the register took off only 20%. The cashier couldn't do anything about it, so I asked for a manager, who checked and confirmed that I was correct, and then adjusted the price. I received over $80 back. read more

Yelp nagged me to review Joann, and some of my favorite people do crafty stuff, so here it is. Selection of art supplies is large and good quality, but you'll need to go to a fine arts store to get the most fancy stuff. They don't carry the brushes I like for watercolors. They've got a lot of stuff for K-8 school projects and holiday decorating materials. The prices on Chinese-made decorations are a bit steep for that quality, but their sales offer pretty good discounts. My sister was disappointed because they didn't carry the fabric she needed, but she was happy with the sewing pattern selection. Service and cashier queue: Service has been uneven -- some very nice and helpful staff, some act like you're cutting into their "me" time. There have been some long waits to check out, but the cashiers have always been nice, so maybe it's the computer. I dunno, but when I need my felt, I need my felt, and no checkout line is going to deter me! Parking is free and easy -- like the woman in the baking aisle! Ha! I have been waiting for my order to ship since December 7th and all I keep getting is a notification of things that are not in stock and still no shipping date. They have cut off communication via chat and customer service hotline. You can send emails but they never get answered. This store is a total rip off and I will never buy/order anything from them again. I now have to dispute any charges via my bank. This type of customer service causes stores to close down, just ask Sears. Bate and switch is not how you attract customers. They have the nerve not to allow you to cancel your order!! Absolutely and utterly horrible customer service by "manager" Mike. Line of at least 10 waiting to check out, and instead of hoping on an open register, he is chatting and looking at his cell phone with the "security guard" dude. Finally Mike turns around and weakly says " next in line" but it's so meek that no one in the front of the line hears him. So he returns to chatting with the security guard. Finally a good 10 minutes later, the ONE cashier calls him over because she's having trouble with a transaction. Mike is clearly irritated. He is extremely rude to the poor cashier and tells her to get on another register and help the next guest. It takes Mike a good 5 minutes to fix the problem. At this time I'm *finally* the next in line, and bring my purchase to Mike's register, to be greeted with "this register is closed, sorry" and then he just walks away. What. An. Asshole. read more

I made an order at the beginning of December. I have sent three emails tried to call with no response. They have now shut their phones to email only but they have not responded to any of my emails. The customer service is awful. I now have to dispute my charge with my bank. I have ordered from three different fabric stores and made three different blankets, and still have not received tracking from my order. I will never order from Joann again. Make sure to tell my friends and family the experience I have had. read more

I'm a crafty mofo! Well, at least for a guy. I make my own melt and pour soaps of all scent, shape, and size; and I've been known to hit up Jo Ann Fabrics for craft projects for my son. Jo Ann's is my go-to place for Holiday decorations, too, as you can get seasonal decorations for 60% off in-season, and they practically give them away after the Holiday has passed. Check their circular as you walk in for a 40% off one item coupon. That can really pay off. They've got a good selection of photo frames, pots for plants, and have a framing service and all kinds of classes. They get less than 4-stars because over a year ago they stopped carrying melt and pour soap supplies. Boo to that! Great selection of fabrics and there is a parking lot! I've generally had positive experiences at this location of JOANN Fabrics but I have mostly stopped in specifically to buy fabrics or fleece only -- and maybe walking out with some sale items that I could not resist -- but I have not tried their custom framing nor come for an event so I cannot speak to that. Because things are fairly easy to find in the store, my only interactions with the staff are at the fabric cutting tables. Everyone here has been courteous though not necessarily friendly, especially when there is a line, but they are just doing their best to keep things moving. I do want to mention that if you are waiting for fabric cutting, please take a ticket! It helps everyone out and makes the process smoother. read more

There were two ladies in particular who were very helpful in providing updates about my order - including the status on the frame and mat shipment required to complete the job. Walking in here is like going into Michael's except without the 50% off one item post card you get in your snail mailbox. (Judging from other reviews, it seems they have the same marketing if you opt-in for their shoppers coupons) Shopping with my Ma the other afternoon and she wanted to take a look at textiles. I walk in thinking "I'm not spending any money", because that is what happens when I go to Michael's. Then I read some awesome advertising. "Store-wide 50 - 70 % off on select products". Before I know it, I've lost sight of my Ma and I've got a cart full of stuff I've chosen. No need to share all of the what-did-you-gets but I did manage to scoop up some nicely decorated glass mason jars I could use to store all the roasted salsa verde I've been making or make fairy jars, some entertaining recipe books and some craft stuff.. Ma made me realize I didn't need much of what was in my basket but the books had creative photos and now I have a list of items I want from Crate and Barrel. One expense exchanged for another I tell ya. Oh yea and I saved 70 % on what I chose to walk away with. Yay! It's much more than just a fabrics store. read more

It was going to get 3 stars and then got the 4th one for size and customer service. Yes customer service. You need to get this people- the store is the size of a bloody Costco, the people on the floor dont have the time for you. But at the pay counters, super helpful people, give you discounts and help you make the right choices. Even reimburse you without quibbling and give you a discount on the new products you are buying. You could probably get everything you want and need for crafty supplies here, the difference is that this is more a sewing store compared to Michaels. I would come here for embroidery things and all other sewing needs. read more

I live this store. It is well organized and has wonderful resources and craft items . One hint is that the holiday items go on deep deep discount after the holiday. So, there are weekends that they even discount it by 90%!!! If you need help, the people there are sweet and kind and knowledgeable. This place is great. It's got everything you need and tons of stuff you don't. I've come here a number of times for custom framing and have never been disappointed. When I moved into my place a few years back I thought it would be nice to have some of my prints nicely framed to match my grown up furniture. I went after I saw a great coupon for custom framing, I wasn't sure what to expect, but for the price I was willing to risk it. I couldn't be happier, my pieces came out great - they have museum glass and everything. A few months back, after my mom had been moaning about getting a family heirloom mounted and framed I suggested she check out Jo-ann. Since I had such a good experience I took her to this location. The associate was awesome, giving us tips, suggestions and being very patient while my mom waffled. When I picked up the finished product I couldn't believe what a wonderful job they did. Furthermore, when I showed it to my mom she was speechless (something that usually only happens when she's sleeping). I've been to Joann for a lot of other projects, etc. (Hey, if you want some blackout liner to sew to your curtains so that your room is so dark you don't know what day it is, this is your place.) My only complaint is the lines, it seems like they always have them (at the cashier and the fabric station), even though they do their best to keep things moving. Bottom line: need something framed, look no further. Bring a coupon, they almost always have them and they're significant - anywhere from 40-60% off. read more

I came in to buy some fabric that I saw on their website. It was relatively busy for a Saturday evening for a fabric shop. Who knew this is where the party was at. Okay, so you guys are busy, I get it, I'll wait for assistant. I finally found someone available and I asked for help in finding a specific print that I saw ON THE JOANN WEBSITE, UNDER DOORBUSTER, and this woman tells me that it was "over there". Um... lady this is a fabric shop, there are a bunch of fabrics "over there" . I don't work here, where the hell is "there"? So I proceed to ask her if there were a Sale section in order to filter out the search easier seeing how it was a Doorbuster promo. The lady tells me there are no sale sections. Interestingggg.... I'm pretty sure most places have a clearance or sales section. So now I'm at the point of irritation, are you insulting my intelligence?? I asked her to walk me "over there" to look for it. She then tells me she's in the middle of helping another customer. Um... wtf? I didn't see her talk to anyone! Unless the customer was invisible? Clearly this woman was lazy in doing her job, along side with a lack of knowledge. I mean who the hell doesn't have a clearance/sales section?? I was more insulted at this comment rather than her being lazy to walk me "over there". Moral of the story, save yourself time and buy online. Don't go "over here". read more

Bought some stick on wall tiles, which turned out to be a colossal waste of money. Contacted the company, which offered a guarantee. They said to take my receipt back to the store, let them know, and show them the correspondence of necessary. The manager, Mabel, flat out refused to do anything, even look at the email, just repeated I'd have to take it up with the manufacturer. Way to earn former customers. read more

This early evening, I was sadly disappointed. I ran into Joanns to grab a few quick things that I need to finish a project. For crafters color is important. I walk in and I ask what is wrong with the lights? The store is only half lit. They turned off every other site throughout the entire store. Their answer, oh we close in a half an hour so the lights go out to tell people were closing. I put a few things down that I grabbed from the front door on the super door buster sale's and walk back out. I can get five minutes before. I could understand an announcement over the PA system, which I know they have. But darkening the store by 50%? And at least a half hour before the store closes? I drove across the street. Walked into Michaels. And spent $300 to complete my project. I will never run in for something last minute to this Joanns again. If this happens at another store that I frequent of theirs, I will never return to Joanns of any store. read more

SLOOOOOOOWER THAN MOLASSES! There needs to be about 20 more employees working here. It takes me 10m to find my fabric, 45m in line waiting to get it cut, and another 20m in line to pay for it. Totally maddening!!! And try to find an associate to assist in finding an obscure item - impossible. Anyone new to sewing/crafting is automatically discouraged in doing so when stepping foot in this store. If you ever get their attention, the associates are very nice. Unless you have tons of time to waste...forget it. It's very unfair to both customers/associates to not have more employees working with such a high volume store. Plenty of fabrics as well as frames crafty things as well. They offer classes for all ages so that's nice. It was easy to get there and parked in the large lot they have for free. The store is organized and clean, was not offered help but I wanted to look around and find it myself. The checkout was fast and smooth. If you're a young lady in the Logan Square area who often traverses the hood solo, you know that you can't get far without some idiot whistling and hooting at you with his pork rind lubed lips, leaning out of his '87 Beretta (red with a brown hood and purple door). Hell, you probably can't get four feet out your front door without some knuckle-dragging weirdo doing cartwheels past you so you'll make eye contact and he can say daaaaamn you fine baaaaby then get all pissed and call you a bitch if you don't respond. So it goes. It's the nature of the neighborhood. I think there's actually a dude who gets paid to stand on the corner of Milwaukee and Spaulding and tell passing women how their butts look. So, you'll know that JoAnn Fabrics is one of the only places lady types can go to fulfill their crafty needs and be left the fuck alone at the same time. The weirdo losers are in Payless and MicroCenter across the way. JoAnn's is always a mix of interesting people with a mission: to make some curtains, some cupcakes, sew a baby blanket, whatever. You don't expect for some Richard Cheese in jeans with leather patches and a Guess jacket from 1994 to come up to you and ask for some cash. Which is exactly what happened to me on Saturday, in the bead aisle at JoAnns. Mr. Cheese crept up on me, flapping his empty wallet around, with this sob story about a flat tire and a sister stranded at the tire place down the street and "movie passes to Water Tower" and they were going to be late for the movie if I didn't give them the $16 they needed to pay the tire guy. (Mr. Cheese failed to realize he'd need more cash to pay for parking downtown. I guess in his time of need he overlooked the details.) I said no way, of course, and just like the ex king of Libya's stepson who needs you to wire him $4000 so he can send you $10,000, he switched off the charm immediately after I said no and went directly to another customer. This pissed me off because THIS IS JOANN'S. THIS IS WHERE I GO TO BUY CRAFTY THINGS AND THINK ABOUT PRETTY STUFF AND YOU DO NOT EFF WITH JOANN'S OKAY? This JoAnn's could do better on their ribbon assortment, they could carry more contact paper options. Sure, they could do better. But they get five stars because I love going there, and it was awesome that the employee I told about this incident went directly to the creepy skeeze and told him (in polite language) to get the hell out or stop bothering her customers. You'd have thought his Beretta was on fire in the parking lot, he shot out the door like they were giving away free hot dogs at the Strack. Awesome job, JoAnn's staff! Protect the fragile environment that is the urban oasis of my crafting dreams. Oh, also: the employees at the fabric cutting station work as fast as they can, and around the end of October, they have a giant line of a thousand evil eyes staring them down at all hours of the day, usually Lincoln Park moms with SUV strollers and horrifying attitudes, ready to give you a buck fifty across your face if they don't get their four yards of pink sparkle tulle RIGHT NOW. There is a soul sucking energy within this place that is palatable. I've felt it once before, thumbing through the 99 cent case-less DVD rack in one of the last north side Blockbuster videos; no one wants to work here, they just do. My wife and I went into Jo Ann on a Saturday afternoon to purchase some cheap felt for a simple home project. We found a role in the bargain $2.99 a yard section and proceeded to the cutting table. I pulled my ticket number and read it- "24." looking up I saw the customer number readout- "12." There were two people at the counter cutting the fabric. "I'm gonna leave you here and go next door to get the groceries," said my wife, and then she departed. The counter was still at 12. I looked around to see others, just standing there. This Jo Ann seems to attract two major types in this area; hipsters who sell their craft projects on Esty and mothers working on Quinceañera dresses. Neither of these groups seemed to care that it had already been 5 minutes and the numbers hadn't moved. Next to me there was another middle aged man who also appeared to have been sent here on an errand from his wife. I looked to him for sense of comradery but his face held the vacant look of an Iowa GMO cow waiting in the slaughter line. No hope; just the resolution that "this will be my Saturday." Finally the counter clicked through to 13. I began searching the aisle for an employee, next to the vacant framing section I tried to get the attention of two middle aged women in green Jo Ann shirts chatting. "Can't believe it is snowing again," said one. "I shouldn't be here, I need to get home and shovel," said the other. Standing across the aisle starring at them it became obvious only by invading their space would I get a reaction. I slowly moved forward till I was in the uncomfortable proximity of 5 feet away; one of them looked at me. Her mouth said- "Can I help you," but her body language was "what is it now." "Can you put some more people to work over at the fabric cutting tables," I said. "I need to be at the register," she told me but proceeded to walk to the fabric section. Surprisingly assuming a spot. The counter had reached 14. GMO cow guy hadn't moved from his spot. I wandered the aisles. Jo Ann offers a large assortment of craft project needs, from knitting, to fabric, to art supplies. The only thing I am familiar enough with is the art supplies section, were everything I saw was mid to low end quality material. There seemed to be a huge selection of yarn and an entire aisle of puffy stickers. I was a stranger in a strange land just blocks from my home. By this time I had seen the entire store and returned to find the counter at 19. I waited, 20, 21, GMO cow guy was finally called and as he moved to the counter I recognized everyone here had the same attitude. Like an afternoon on an Los Angeles freeway, no one cared about getting anywhere fast. Finally, and I do mean 30+ minutes since I walked into this place I went to the counter asking the attendant to please cut me 3 yards. An older gentleman and his grandson came up and asked my attendant if "she knew where there poster board was?" The woman looked confused and said "I don't know what that is?" I turned to the man and directed him to the art supply section where I had seen some. Long story short (hard to say that now), turns out I grabbed the $7 a yard felt in that pile, the attendant and I exchanged a few words about how this was taking forever. We went and pulled the sale felt, not that you could tell the difference, then after three attempts to count off the yards I was done. Surprisingly there were no lines at check-out with every register full. In summation, this place has cheap quality stuff at average prices. Terrible staff and management. This review is an attempt to exercise the emotional scars of a wasted 45 minutes of my life. Please, please, please God do not give many any reason to return. read more

I used to think Home Depot was my favorite do it yourself sex shop with all their various project building supplies and ropes, but Jo Ann is where it's at. They sell this stuff called piping which is essentially cotton braided rope. It's super soft and since it's cotton, it won't leave rope burns like the synthetic varieties but it's not nearly as expensive as hemp rope treated for "private home", bondage, and boy scouts alike. In another aisle you can find black RIT dye so you can dye all of your cotton products and clothes block so you can be that bad-ass and non-vinyl domme should you choose. Then there is also their large selection of leather and vinyl on rolls should you want to build yourself a gimp suit. Soft armature wires in a variety of sizes will also let you build mouth cages and other things. Building your own variety of BDSM tools from vinyl and cotton is an excellent investment for vegans looking to provide professional erotic services. Should you also want to knit your grandson a sweater in your days off of dominating professionally, they also have a large selection of yarns though not as classy as designer yarn shops.
