I'm not a fan of this store and rarely go in. I went a couple weeks ago because they had a sale on yarn. It's a very stereotypical, run of the mill fabric store. It's beyond boring and nothing new as far as stock or yarn colors. Even Wal-Mart gets new colors in more often! If you're looking for boring consistency, I suppose this is the store for you. Employees are scarce and hard to find. My husband and I lined up, after following the long maze of impulse buy shelves, to wait a solid ten minutes. We talked loudly, I coughed a few times, clapped. Nothing. My husband attempted to find an employee, still nothing. Finally, one wanders over and said she was sorry, but she couldn't see the check-out lines from where she was. Not my problem. I said they needed to have a bell out to cut down on wait time in the later evening when there aren't many customers. She said they weren't allowed to do something like that. So in a store where the registers are blocked off by impulse buy bullshit, and employees want to be useful past standing behind a register with two customers in the store, apparently you have to go find them in order to pay for your items. They might as well turn it into a self checkout! Or at least change that portion of the store around so they can see the registers and when someone is there. I said as much to the cashier, who then spent three minutes explaining where she was in the store, and where to find someone should it happen again. Bla, bla, bla. I forgot everything she said before I even walked out the door because it was a boring, drawn out conversation turned lecture from her, and quite frankly, it's unlikely I'll be back for a very long time anyway. So my ability to care about her speech was pretty minimal and tuned out ten seconds after she started. I'm constantly less than impressed by this store. Which is sad because it could be great. The location is perfect, and I would totally go a lot more often if they had a better selection and more employees to help. read more

Today I stood next to the cutting counter while 4 employees walked right past me, did not ask if I needed help as the parade of them helped one customer find 1 bolt of fabric. 5 pairs of eyes for 1 bolt of fabric. It was completely ridiculous. If you want fabric, go to the other Joann's. I finally left because my lunch break is short. Not everyone who sews/Crafts/quilts is retired and has all the time in the world. read more

I like to shop here. The staff is always friendly to me. I can always find some kind of good deal on craft items I am looking for or I can use a coupon on the regular priced merchandise. Right now I am into making accessories for dolls. I can find cool little beads for doll jewelry or fabric remnants for doll clothing or purses. I just stocked up on their fabric quarters. There have been some changes in employees, and its all for the better. I have only been in here a couple of times recently, and all of my interactions have been positive. Namely, there is a very friendly gentleman (who seems to be running the store--he was everywhere) who was very friendly and helpful not only to me but to other customers. Jo-ann's is run of the mill. They have craft stuff, and it is the same stuff you can find at all their other stores. The service was not very friendly, but they had the knitting needles I needed. Overall pretty meh. read more

Extremely rude employee named Terri behind the fabric counter. How does this person have a job in customer service? Yelled at me as I entered the store as it was apparently after closing, though the lights still on and doors open. Here I am, trying to spend my money here and this employee shouts at me to make me leave. I didn't mind being told the store was closing, but I am an adult and don't need to be scolded in the process. Did as any logical person would and went straight to Michael's. read more

Went in because I receive coupons and an ad in my inbox, always look at it but rarely go in and was reminded why tonight. After checking out the add and seeing some items that I wanted to check out in person, my husband and I headed in around 6pm. There was a very friendly girl that helped us at the cutting counter, but when we came up to pay, the cashier was less than helpful. While we were waiting in line, I saw her snap at another customer who thought she had gotten an item that was on sale. However, it didn't ring up on sale and the girl said that she had picked it up in a bin that had a number of the same item for the sale price. She seemed very sincere, had her little boy with her and it seemed like she just wanted to purchase her items so she could go. The cashier then told her "no there's not a bin back there". The girl seemed embarrassed and bought the item anyway. The rest of the transaction was tense, as the cashier was very flippant and short the rest of the time. This made me a little leery of my own transaction, but I knew what I was getting and didn't think there would be an issue. However, she rung everything up and the total was way higher than it should have been. I scrolled through the transaction on the card reader (very handy, btw) and saw that all of the items that I came to purchase that were supposed to be 60% off were not registering as so. When I was browsing through them, I made sure that I read the sign and the only exclusions were string beads and grab bags. All pendants , charms, and packaged beads were supposed to be 60% off. She went back and looked and gave me some ridiculous explanation about how the sign was by items with a green card and these ones had a black card? But they were not the only items that were supposed to be 60% off and didn't ring up that way. I questioned her why the sign would say "All" if that didn't mean ALL. She snipped at me and told me I got the wrong thing. I just told her fine, I didn't want it, id take my fabric and glue and be on my way. Once the transaction was over, my husband and I got into the car and I looked at my email and at the website just to double check. I was irritated by how flippant the cashier was and I took the trip to the store specifically for the items that I left without. Sure enough, I was correct.... the items were just not ringing up like the should be (makes me wonder if the same thing happened to the woman that was there before me that was also treated poorly by this cashier) I went back into the store to show her the ad and where it stayed that the sale was online and in stores, and even pulled up some of the things that I was trying to buy, showing her the correct price. Her response was "well I can override the price if you want me to." Rather begrudgingly. She proceeded to do so, throwing the items into the bag and not saying a word, and then practically shoving the bag into my hand, still without a word. She seemed more bent out of shape that she had to make sure something was done correctly than anything else. I was not pleased with the way I was treated at all. I will be going to the Eugene store from now on. read more

After reviewing other comments about Joanne's in Springfield, I must admit I've had similar experiences, but I also view these experiences with a different frame of mind. I've worked in retail and I know it can be tiring, boring, and the customers can be so nasty that I was hesitant to even approach them out of reluctance to get blasted with their bad attitude. I learned to get over it and I've been a happier person because I learned how to be more resilient. When I don't see an associate, I usually find the one or two working in the isles tidying or stocking. If there is only one associate, it's probably because someone called in sick and now they have to do the work of two. Those bolts can be heavy, so I respect their efforts in keeping the stock as neat as realistically possible. I'm also nice and polite to the staff and although I don't always get the same response from them, I do know there is always a sourpuss in the gang so I don't blame all the other employees for the rude behavior of one, who BTW is probably on her way out. The stock is what you'd expect from a mid-price range franchise. It's adequate for most customers with average skill level. I'm impressed by the amount of different crafts supplies they supply! If I need fine fabrics, I shop online at Britex.com, an awesome high-end fabric store in San Francisco; it's a Taylor's favorite place to shop, too! But for everyday clothing, Joanne's is adequate. I do love their sales - and online coupons - and I can save about 40% to 60% and sometimes even 75% off of an item. So I can sew a basic white tee shirt (Who doesn't need lots of those!) for about $4.50 each (1 1/2 yards for each tee) and it's better quality than what I could find at Walmart (not to mention it fits me perfectly and isn't too short in the length). My advice to shoppers - * If you're uninspired, it's boring. But if you're creative, you'll find lots of new ideas bouncing in your head! If you need high quality Italian wool at $70 per yard, try Britex.com * Be patient and consistently a good customer and you will be rewarded each and every time you come to shop. You'll get advice and extra care if you're a joy to serve. You won't be just a customer, you'll become a friend! Customer service is a two way street. For the sourpuss you might encounter, choose to either make the most of it and go on your way, or come back when it's not her shift...OR, ask the manager of the store when her days off will be - she'll get the message that this is a problem employee who is driving away regular happy customers. Good managers work with their employees to become better people, give them 2nd chances, and let them go if they don't improve. I hope that my post has been helpful in gaining a perspective on Joanne's, and other crafts and fabric stores. It's run-of-the-mill because that's what we need and what our budgets can stand. It's boring, if your bored and it's a playground if your looking for fun. Sales associates are human and like most of us, want to be treated well. If you find a sourpuss, and she's consistently nasty, ask her boss about it. Sourpuss is doing this behind her boss' back. Just started quilting and the employees here have been great. Especially Debbie and Kris. They are patient and very helpful explaining choices. For my first quilt people are amazed at the nice fabric I got from Joaans. They all think it came from a quilt shop or online. Keep it up I'm coming back read more

I was beyond disappointment with my experience here, employee's were yelling at each other across the store, there was not a single employee on the floor that was willing to help/direct customers in need and were very clear about it. The store was disgusting, lights were broken, it looked like they hadn't swept or mopped in weeks and the piles of fabric were overflowing into the walkways, I felt like it created a very unsafe environment, especially with shoppers with little ones running around. After pulling a number to get my fabric cut their system failed, so they decided to cut fabric on a first come first serve basis, but neglected to tell customers this as we all waited for our number to called and the Cutting-Counter employee's ignored us all. My cashier was no better, not helping the line of people, my cashier experience was no better, a sticky counter, popping gum and unfriendliness of it all was too much. I'm never going back. read more
