Jodette is such a great teacher and joy to be around. She always brought such passion and laughter to each class that I cannot forget after almost 15 years. We got to perform at Cal Expo and the team was always so welcoming and fun. I still love belly dancing and try to stay connected through youtube, but no one teaches how to dance gracefully like her. Sacramento is just a big suburb masqerading as a city. Without Jodette's my Chi-town flava' would have died a slow psychotically painful death. Jodette's is super basic- carpeted studio, mirrors in the front, boombox in the corner belts out Arabic music from old scratched compact discs (remember those?). Expensive, and I do mean, expensive, belly dancing costumes line the upper walls and a couple of racks in the corner display for-sale clothing from Jodette's travels. No one (not even the teachers) is welcoming except Jodette. Don't be offended, just make friends with the women who aren't full of themselves. Unless you show real potential, specifically ask for help, or really suck, they will not correct your form. Class prices are cheap. Have fun gettin' yo shimmy on! read more

Since they were having a promotional special, a couple of friends and I decided to try a belly dancing lesson. It was an awkward experience. The studio is basically a store front and at night anyone walking by can peer in. No one else showed up for class that night and it turned out that Jodette was unable to teach that night so she left teaching to two of her dancers. There were few other women in the studio and we later found out that also dancers that Jodette schedules at the restaurants. They sat around and watched the class while they waited which made it super intimidating for a first timer. Instructor 1 Simply AWFUL. Basically she turned on the CD player and proceeded to do her routine. We had obviously never done this before so we floundered, but she never paused to help and did not ask if there were questions. She just avoided eye contact and just continued with her routine. I would have been better off at home with a DVD. At least I could "rewind". (Unfortunately I did not get the name for reference. She was 35-40ish, Middle Eastern descent?) Instructor 2 Thank goodness another one of the dancers replaced for her for 2nd half. She was a much much better teacher. (Again, I did not get any names for reference but she was in her 20's and Caucasian?) She did provide encouragement and corrections and a did ask for any questions and did try answer questions and help with technique. She seemed like she would be a good instructor. I would take a class from her. I give her the one star. Overall, I do not think that I would go back. It is not the most welcoming first time experience. Also since Jodette was unable to teach, I don't think she should have taken the business and then palmed the teaching off onto her two dancers, especially if one of them does not know how to teach. read more

Not sure if it's promotional price or they lowered prices for good, but classes are lots of fun. Can be a bit intimidating at first bc so many students are really good! Jodette is very nice and welcoming. All instructors are very helpful. Class sign ups are for six weeks at a time, but I'll keep coming as long as they're offered :) Lots of fun, good workout, enjoyable change of pace than other options. read more

Jodette had recently opened up a boutique when I was in Sacramento and visited her studio out of curiosity. She has some beautiful, unique jewelry and other items for dance costuming, or just to wear. There were many other things, too, even rugs. I picked up some of the most beautiful pieces of jewelry for my tribal belly dance costuming collection. One antique piece and another old, but not quite antique piece. Both from the Mediterranean. I had a wonderful time talking with Jodette about some of her history in belly dance. What a life well lived, and she continues to give through her art as well as her philanthropic endeavors to help people who are hungry. It was a lovely experience to meet her & visit to her shop. If I were local to Sacramento, I'd be dancing with Jodette's authentic Egyptian belly dance troupe. read more

Open limited hours 3-6, the boutique is well worth it with unique finds, collector items and antiques and a cool selection of jewelry from around the world. I was really excited to come and take the free advertised Saturday morning belly dancing class that is advertised here on Yelp and on Jodette's website. I arrive right at 10 o'clock when a class is supposed to start and there was a padlock on the door and it was dark inside. There was a poster in the window that listed information about the classes and the part where it's advertised for the free Saturday morning class was scribbled out. Very disappointing. I notice that they only seem to be open for the exact times that they have a class going which is about 1 hour a night during the week which doesn't leave very many options so I guess I won't be coming back. read more

While on an unexpectedly long walk, my 9 year old son was desperate for a bathroom. We were about 10 blocks to the car and he was losing his mind as every place we passed was either closed or did not offer a public option. That's when we came to Jodette's store front and what an unexpected treat for us. Not only was she gracious enough to allow my son to use her facilities, she shared so many stories of her illustrious career. Paired with the decadent photos and paintings of herself that decorate the entire boutique, it was easy to get lost in the imagery of opulence! Her campaign to help the homeless is absolutely admirable. Jodette is tiny, but she is a powerhouse! Coming from a performing family, she reminded me of my own Grandmother who was also a beautiful woman that taught dance with an iron fist, but would gladly give her last dime to anyone in need. It's a non-standard environment for today's dance class models and that's a good thing! A laid back atmosphere, teachers who are also active performers, and a really good workout! Jodette herself is such a card. She's sweet and quirky. She doesn't teach as often anymore, as she is getting on in age, but the other instructors follow her technique well. I've found that Monday nights have an especially good instructor. When you buy the class packages you can go any night of the week so you can try every one out if you want! And then pick your favorite and stick with it! The prices are awesome and everything you need is sold there. Including some really fancy looking costumes! But for class all you need is a practice sash and finger cymbals which are both reasonably priced. read more

I wanted to try belly dancing and this seemed to be the most advertised place in Sacramento. I went to her studio and Jodette reminded me of a sweet little old grandma. I kept going and eventually joined her troupe and became one of her better dancers. She would always talk about bad girls doing this and bad girls doing that and I didn't know what she meant. Eventually I got kicked out because she thought that I was cheating on her by getting my own gigs, which I didn't do. In the time I spent with her I realized that she is a crooked old woman. She would arrange parties for girls to dance at and would tell us that they were only paying $40 dollars for two girls and we would make lots of tips. I saw that very same letter and the people were paying $200 so she pocketed most of the money. She did sneaky business all of the time and would try to pin the girls against each other. After she kicked me out she tried to get me back again and I refused because she made me hate it. I never really pursued dancing much after that, but I can say that Jodette didn't teach quality or class to her dancers. I think it is totally inappropriate to take tips on the body like a stripper. It is much better to have a tip jar! She would also tell the girls to just shake it, which is exactly what they do. If you go to a restaurant or club where her dancers are performing you will see what I mean. They have no rhythm and are scantily clad. It really is like a strip show where you can touch the dancers so if you are a man who is into that by all means give her dancers a go! read more

I had a bad experience with Jodette a few years back. After seeing one of her dancers perform at Maloof's, I knew I HAD to learn to belly dance! But the classes offered were not convenient to my schedule so I struck a deal with Jodette that if I got 8 people together, she would open up another time slot. I only could get 7 but she agreed to start the classes anyways. We paid up front and the classes began. Now, my girlfriends were flaky and only 3-4 people would show up at a time. The ones that didn't show up, understood that by not showing up, they forfeited the money for that class. Despite Jodette being paid for all 7 people regardless of how many actually showed, she was upset about attendance and, when only 2 people showed up for the third class, cancelled classes and did NOT refund us for the 7 remaining classes. She offered for us to take the remaining classes during normal class times instead. We all worked at the same place and had the same schedule so only one person was able to do that. The rest of us was just gypped out of our money. I tried to sue in small claims court but couldn't serve her so gave up. Apparently, this business doesn't accept certified mail. Shady. I would not recommend this business. read more

I just started belly dancing less than an month ago and I'm a really uncoordinated person so dancing in general has always been difficult for me but the teachers here are great they really work with you and Jodette is fantastic. I recommend this class to anyone who is interested in belly dancing. read more
