I've been going to The Academy for about two years now and have really enjoyed my experience. The programming is well structured: Mondays focus on upper body, Wednesdays on lower body, Fridays are full body, and Tuesdays and Thursdays are conditioning days. Classes are about an hour long, making it easy to fit into a busy schedule. The staff is knowledgeable, motivating, and fun to work with. The facility is clean and well equipped, with TVs, showers, lockers, and plenty of workout space. Workouts are displayed on screens, and members move through different stations around the gym, which keeps things interesting and engaging. One thing I appreciate most is the community. I joined my friend Armando, at one of the drop in conditioning classes on a Saturday morning from 0830-0930 w/ the instructor Christian. My first impression of the gym is that it's nice and open, with different areas of training. You have cardio machines on one side, free weights on the other and a nice a straight long area of turf in the center where the group exercises/trainings occur. It was nice to look around and see that the members working out at this gym are motivated and you can tell how in shape they were. There was a slight intimidating factor as soon as you walk in, but once you start the class that slowly subsides. As an avid spin/cyclist, I'm used to taking indoor spin classes 4-5x a week, but weightlifting and circuit training is another beast. The conditioning class incorporated kettle bells and using our own body weight for the exercises. Christian also had us do sprints all while keeping our form correct and tight. You can tell that this gym is all bizness by the way their members show up and show out! Let's just say that I was sore and full of lactic acid for at least a week. But overall the workout was great and it hurt so good! Would I return for another drop in class? Absolutely! read more

Foumd The Academy online and so glad that I did. I alternate this workout with Dance and it has been working out great for 2 weeks. I have several back and neck injuries and I'm always afraid of certain workouts that will cause more pain or inflammation. My first thoughts upon arrival were, parking! Yes! And the gym is huge, I didn't know what to expect. My first instructor was Omaro(sorry if I spelled wrong), he's super awesome. I love the way he organizes and structures his lessons. It feels like one big team working together. I didn't get lost my first time. I worked out a sweat and felt amazing. My goals are to get back into shape and lose weight while doing it right and not injuring my back or neck. Kristian is another instructor and structures his classes a little differently, not acclimated to the whiteboard setting or understand all the drills, but I just follow the group and try to figure it out as I go. He's also very adamant about doing the right exercises and taking pressure off my back so always checking in and modifying. Wil be trying 1:1 also just to learn special exercises. I love the diversity and programs seem to be constantly changing, very interactive, bathrooms and showers available and spray disinfectant to clean things after touching. Very excited about the potential for this gym! The owner is still waiting on additional equipment (i.e more weights). However, the gym is looking great so far. The green turf is 50yards long. That is quite a distance for lunges, bear crawls, etc. There are cubby holes to place belongings, and the women's bathroom has a couple showers. I'm assuming the men's bathroom has the same ; ) Parking is decent. There is a private lot and plenty of street parking. read more

A great facility & equipment, knowledgeable & motivating trainers, friendly people! I've been training here for a year now and haven't found a place that could replace it. The equipment is organized and people respect the facility to keep it that way. The facility is spacious and has a semi open concept which is great for air flow on the hot summer days. Bathrooms are always clean and fully stocked with necessary items, so you're never going to a stall without toilet paper. Classes are thought out and structured, where you stretch to prepare for movement youll be doing that day. You also can track your progress for strength training week by week, with suggested weight increases on display per your start week. read more

If you want to get all SUPER SKINNY and look like a walking stick with a big ass head & teeth this is definitely NOT the place for you. If you want to work out, build some muscles, tone, and be FIT....while making friends, then you have found the right place. 2nd the trainers here are AWESOME. All of them, they are so friendly and helpful. If you are injured, they have modifications to help you reach your fitness goals without compromising your injury. And they don't say, just sit and do this, they have you do something similar with intensity, that will alleviate using the body part that is injured. no "oh just do some crunches/planks/etc for example I have a knee injury. I can't do sprints and such, so I have to do the bike or row, and not some ice cream parlor ride, I must bike like Freddy Krueger is after me, or row, like I am in a boat with an alligator chasing me. 3rd the people that workout here...the people that workout here are probably some of the best people you will ever meet (especially that noon bunch). Everyone pushes everyone in a good way. If you are MIA for a few days, people actually check on you to make sure you are okay. They CARE...you aren't just some nameless face they see in the gym! It makes you want to come and workout just so you can see everyone and sweat together and die together but in the end you all survive together. Now I will warn people there are a couple people there who are in the noon class who are out of control, but I promise you that I really don't mean any harm...I mean they....THEY MEAN no harm! ha ha (I am obviously talking about myself) The workouts are tough, but with everyone there, they make it FUN! 4th there is Turf....50 fricking yards of turf, weights, kettle bells, rowers, medicine balls, steel maces, barbells, dumbbells, ropes, sleds, squat racks, the list goes on... 5th The facility, its pretty...you can tell they take a lot pride in their facility. (with the exception of those blinds in the office--this is a joke) If you are looking for a new gym...a place to push you, reach your fitness goals, and have fun at the same time, this is definitely the place. Want a great summer body or a six pack? Training with The Academy will definitely make this happen! I attended the jam sessions here. It was a circuit training work out. I haven't felt like I wanted to throw up after a work out for a long time. I only feel this way when I work out with my personal trainer! I definitely got whipped. The gym is in pretty much a warehouse. No A/C so it gets hot on a hot summer day. Bring plenty of water and stay hydrated. I made the mistake of not bringing enough water. I wish they offered daily passes or to pay per class instead of monthly and annual memberships. I mix up my work outs around between weigh training, running, yoga, and cycling so it's really hard for me to get a good use out of monthly passes like this. read more

Always a great class. I really enjoy coming in here. There's a ton of space and equipment to use/ share. Instructors always come in with great energy and structure. There's always a large class but they're observant and available when you have questions or don't listen well... like me lol (I can be a bit spacey, sry). They are always supportive and helpful, but will also urge you to put your best effort forward when you need that extra kick. The classes are always challenging. The conditioning class is a bit more fast pace and pushes your aerobic capacity for a climb, whereas the strength classes are a bit more flexible around the 60 mins depending on your comfort. Everyone has been friendly and supportive, so far. Honestly, the atmosphere is really great for all fitness levels, and the workout repeats I think for 3 weeks each so if you're new you should get pretty comfortable quickly. I See other training sessions going on during the classes so seems they stay pretty busy and have other options outside the class times. Highly recommend if you're looking to push your fitness to the next level. read more

I really wanted to like The Academy since the exercises were really great and challenging, but I didn't like the format or facility at all. I went for my first class the upper body strengthening class. I got there early and just walked into a really big gym with small groups of people doing their workout, I wandered around for 10 min when a nice trainer finally came to say hi and gave me a waiver. Then everyone came for class and there were a LOT of people. The instructor said I don't need to sign in on an iPad or anything. Okay cool. I think a lot of reviewers said if it's your first time you'll be confused and not sure what to do and it's true! Everyone else in class seemed to have done the routine many times and knew exactly what to do and I didn't feel like the instructor gave enough time or instructions to those who do not know the routine. Not to mention there were so many people all spread out, I couldn't hear so I just copied the person next to me.. after the warm up, instructor put up a list of exercises, sets and reps on a TV screen. He then demonstrated them and they looked hard! I don't think he gave modification options. If you can't do it simply just go lighter weight (which is fine). Then people and their friends break up in their own little group and knew exactly what to me, and I was so confused. Basically you get to start with whichever group of exercise you want as long as there aren't a lot of people. There's not really a clock or strict timed system so you can actually go at your own pace sorta even tho there's a clear list of sets reps rest period. I think for me i much prefer classes that are much smaller, have a clear circuit routine that's easy to follow, timed and pushes me so I'm less likely to rest too much cuz I'm so tired. I wasn't sure when classes ended either I just finished all the sets and left since the official class time was over and people started to leave. No stretch at the end I guess read more

In April 2017, I was diagnosed with cerebellar ataxia, a movement disorder. The cerebellum controls muscle coordination and extensively, balance. Basically, my cerebellum is shrinking so I am very clumsy and dorky! Cerebellar atrophy is degenerative and will keep progressing. I will walk funnier and funnier. The first time I met with the physical therapist, they were so impressed! They said my MRI looked really bad, and they were expecting me to come in with a walker or in a wheelchair, not walking in! I give credit for this to The Academy. I know that if it wasn't for their trainers' knowledge and expertise in functional training, my muscles would not be this adaptive. I tried a big box gym, but I had to come back to The Academy. They are the best! Great people. Great environment. The owner is always there and you're on a first name basis with everybody there, including Bryan. Everybody is so friendly and always says hi. I've been training with Riley and working on my balance and coordination. And getting my butt kicked with The Academy level of fitness again! The staff genuinely lives the "Get Better" philosophy. I am super excited to be apart of this gym. The gym is gorgeous, unlike any other gym I have been to and trust me.. I have been to many gyms. There is 50 yards of green turf, olympic weight lifting bars, platforms and plenty of gym equipment both free weights and some machines, tvs to get your sports on, medicine balls, foam rollers, a place to charge your phone, cubbies to put your belongings in (like grade school) and the best part ... *wait for it* MASSAGES! Yes! There is a massage room where you can schedule an appointment with a massage therapist! Uhm, can we please say WINNING! #winning Sign me up already. The gym offers personal training with some of the best trainers in town if your looking for a more focused gym routine. They do offer classes, which are great for all levels. They offer conditioning classes, which are like a mix of bootcamp/cardio/weights and weightlifting classes or strength. They also offer Olympic weight lifting classes. And will offer nutritional advice if your also seeking a much greater goal. The gym is also very affordable more so than those corporate chains. I recommend the gym to anyone. If you're a beginner - Brian and Bryan are really good at getting you to see your full potential and even more in the gym. They will really get you to love fitness on a whole new level. And if you're not a beginner, that's okay. There's plenty of room for people like you who want to continually grow and be successful. I also recommend the gym to anyone who is a woman. Do you feel intimidated when you go to 24 hours and don't know how to use the machine or what moves get your abs and back ripped? Well... this gym is for you. It's such a comfortable space for you to learn and grow. As a woman, I feel more confident coming in here to lift weights because not only are the people nice, but the trainers make sure I do the movements correctly. If I'm injured they cater to me by allowing me to do a different move and work around my injuries. I can now bench, deadlift and do sprints with the big boys... easy. And I'm 4"11 so imagine what you can do at the gym! The people who work out here range in ages and backgrounds, but everyone is SUPER nice. Everyone is really encouraging and motivating. It's become like a second family and second home for me away from my actual home. The facility also houses the National Personal Training Institute if your interested in becoming a trainer. There is adequate parking, both private and street. Restrooms to take a shower. Water fountains to fill your water bottle. A charging station for your cell phone. Do I need to say anything more? I have also been with Bryan Washington as a client for 2 years. When I moved here from the Bay Area - I have always had a trainer and moving to a new area I was so grateful to have met Bryan. He has changed my entire perspective on fitness, even more so than any other trainer I have ever had. And I can honestly say ... I wouldn't trust anyone else with my health and fitness routines. I have lost weight and seen a dramatic improvement in my performance at the gym. I literally am so grateful to have met a great trainer who finally understands and gets me. I was a visitor for a bit and this gym has everything you need for a solid workout. Often as an out-of-town visitor in a gym, front desk service can be very dismissive and lackluster. That was not the case at this gym. The equipment was also very clean...much better than my usual place. I am looking forward to a repeat visit tomorrow! I discovered this place while walking to my car one day after work. I had been trying to find ways to tone up , slim down and lose some fat around my mid section. I have next to no fitness background. I work two jobs and don't have a lot of free time to workout, let alone research workout routines and figure out how to implement them on my own. Enter personal trainer, Christian Ampania. I'm intimidated by gyms. I was bracing for Christian to be a stereotypical muscle-head type, but I quickly discovered that he couldn't be more different. He is very approachable, down to earth, humorous and understanding but NOT a pushover. Christian wrote down all my fitness goals and crafted a workout routine that fits my goals very specifically. I previously had no experience with any kind of weights, routines or terminology, so everything Christian showed me was completely foreign to me. From the get go, he has always explained why I'm doing a certain exercise, and how it's going to help me achieve my goals. I've been training with Christian two mornings a week since November 2014. As of July 1 2015, I've lost about 15 pounds, three inches off my waist, gained great muscle definition as well as implemented a healthier diet/lifestyle outside of the gym. Christian is the number one reason why I'm still training at the Academy. The owners and facilities are great as well. Brian & Bryan always say hello to me when they see me and the locker room/fitness areas are always clean. They offer a lot of classes that I can drop in to at any time. The vibe of the place is very positive and friendly and they always have really great music playlists every morning with just the right amount of variety. We moved to Sacramento last year and looked at every gym in the Midtown/ Downtown area to see where we wanted to get our sweat on... I am SO grateful that we found The Academy. The workouts The Academy puts together are challenging and super fun!! The people that workout there regularly are super friendly and the instructors are a wealth of knowledge that know how to push you to get better/ fit. Hands down the best (and prettiest!) gym I have ever worked out in. If you're serious about your training, this is where you want to be! Upon first stepping foot in the gym you can't help but be motivated by the amount of work being done by everyone around you! Five platforms and squat racks, men's and women's Olympic bars, 50 yards of turf to sprint, sleds to push/pull, wall balls to slam, two complete dumbbell and kettle bell sets, and trainers who are actually knowledgable about their trade! Bryan Francis and Bryan Washington have built a beautiful facility. Proving they are all about the member experience, they'll move a fan over to you during your workout to help cool you down between sets, and if that's not enough, there's even a specially designated phone charging station. I've been a trainer here for about as long as we've been open (which is less than 2 months as of this review) but it feels like I've been here forever, because it feels like home. I started out as an intern with the Head of Strength & Conditioning at The Academy, Bryan Washington, when he was one of the top trainers at another gym. Bryan is a super cool dude and one of the most inspiring mentors I have had the fortune of working with and learning from. Bryan Francis, another really awesome mentor, is the half of Bryan squared (term coined by the gym's officially unofficial assistant). Anyone who can effectively train the Rock (yep, Dwayne Johnson...not to namedrop or anything) and other athletes for their goals while still having the knowledge, skill and passion to also train the "average Joe/Jane" and be completely committed to them and their goals is an amazing person in my mind. They've both done/are doing an amazing job at creating a clean, professional 5-star environment to have fun and get fit/healthy/lean/fast/powerful/strong/jacked/tan (stadium lighting baby!) in. Everybody in the gym--from the trainers to the members all have great attitudes and are fun to be around. We're very much a community environment--whether you're an individual client, participating in one of our classes or are just dropping in and working out on your own, you know you're with people who care about you and your goals. We aren't the type of gym that just wants to kick people's asses for an hour and send them home. I mean, if you want your butt kicked, we got it--but having your butt kicked isn't the point. If you're doing personal training, every workout is customized to you personally. And if you're doing classes, you're in great hands there too. Every class/group workout is designed by Bryan Washington (who is also the strength & conditioning coach for local athletes, including the Sac State Hornets). If you're somebody with special exercise needs, modifications can be made to the workouts on the spot so you can still get a good workout in that you know isn't just kicking your ass, but also helping you with your individual needs. I completed the 90 day challenge at The Academy and LOVED it! The difference I see with the 90-day challenge at the Academy is that it is more realistic and sustainable. The provided meal plan is easy to understand and does not require you add in supplements or ingredients that do not seem natural. In fact, the food plan is very easy--avoid the sweets, starches, and the carbs, focus on eating fresh, whole ingredients. Having an expansive food list and clear diet outline made it easy and is something I feel like I can sustain on my own. As for the fitness part of the challenge--honestly, I was worried about the classes for two reasons: 1) I was out of shape and 2) I felt totally lost in any gym. As for being "out of shape"--when I began the classes, it was clear that I had not been to a gym in a very long time--but no-one in the challenge or at the gym made me feel that way--they were encouraging and recognized that everyone starts somewhere. Members and coaches all made me feel welcome and invested in me. As for 2, while I still feel a little lost at the gym--I am starting to understand the exercises and how they benefit me, I am also grateful to the coaches who have helped me with modifications on certain exercises where I needed it. The biggest change over the 90 days is that instead actively trying to avoid the gym or make excuses, I now am disappointed when I don't make it to the gym and I actively try to make sure I get a workout even when I don't make it to a class. I now actually look forward to going to the gym (especially when we are starting a new work out!). I loved the 90-day challenge and am so glad that I happened to see it on Facebook. I know what you are thinking... Do we really need another gym popping up? The answer is a definite yes, if it looks like this one. When you first step in to the gym, you are blown away by the amount of space there is. You can start to imagine yourself sprinting to the finish line on their luscious green turf that spans 50 yards. Or maybe doing squats on their glossy wood platforms. Or maybe.... You get the picture. They have all new stuff and it is all pretty spectacular. Everything that you can want, they have including a massage therapist and a classroom for personal trainers to get their license. They even have rope holders for their giant ropes. FREAKIN ROPE HOLDERS!! At Fitness Systems, the rope is tied to a stationary bike (really classy and safe). They have it all, including outlets for your phones and cubby holes to put your stuff in. The locker rooms are clean and new and include two showers. The classes and gym membership are very affordable. I would guarantee that they are among the lowest or even the lowest in price compared to other gym of its kind. It just opened, so it is a secret spot for now. I know that won't be the case for long, because once you try it you will be hooked. Now the owners are great too! You can tell from one conversation that they are passionate about getting YOU healthy and in shape. They are always friendly and care about you as a person as well. This is not a requirement for me when choosing a gym, but it is a nice touch that I enjoy. They run the classes and know their stuff in and out. Heck, the co-owner is the strength coach for sports programs at both Sac City and Sac State. He knows what to do and also modifies if necessary. If you have a body part that is ailing, he will make sure that you stay away from that area, while still getting your workout on. It is like having a personal trainer without the personal trainer cost. A gym is supposed to help you achieve your fitness goals. Here at the Academy, they do just that. But not only do they do that through hard work, they allow you to enjoy the experience as well. By the time I look up at the clock, the class is over. They keep it moving and fun for all. Whatever size or shape you are, they will make you feel like the best version of you. What more can you ask for? They even have free trial classes so you can see what it is like. So if it is time to try another gym or try a gym all together, I recommend that you try this place first. You won't regret it... You will learn what a gym should be like... When I look for a new gym what matters most to me is the vibe from the people running the gym and working out there. The Academy doesn't disappoint - there is a great vibe! I walked into the gym and was greeted and welcomed casually. There was not a hard sales pitch, it was just a show and tell. They are very proud of their gym and it feels like they let it speak for itself. It's not hard either because it is really nice! Clean, organized and effective! Training prices are reasonable. I work out with Riley Z. I couldn't have dreamed up a better trainer! He is very encouraging, supportive and even funny. He won't let me slack though... the worst thing to hear when I'm working out with him is "no rep"... but I'm getting awesome results!! After 6 years of training hard, I have finally found a place that has given me the results that I've always wanted. I moved over to the Academy about a year ago and it was the best decision I made for myself. Pre academy, I was loosing steam, unmotivated, and forced myself to go to the gym (I ended going to the gym only 2 days a week and maybe 3 on a good week). I've been consistent at The Academy (4-5 days a week) for a year now and I LOVE it! Abs is so encouraging, positive, watches your form!, and pushes you just enough (so you don't injure yourself). Workouts are NOT boring, which was always an issue of mine. I strongly suggest trying one of their challenges. As a member for almost a year, and never before a "gym person," the Academy is a gym that makes you WANT to go each day, each week, until the months add up and you possess more overall strength and balance and confidence than ever. The facilities are stylish and clean, the music lively, and the members friendly and inclusive. Group classes at all hours make this gym very accessible and encouraging. The trainers that lead the classes are the best. Yes, you will do deadlifts, and burpees, and suicide drills, and lunges and squats and sled pulls, there is a very well-thought-out regimen with an emphasis on core strength, muscle toning, conditioning, and avoiding injury. The Academy is the best gym around! I have never really enjoyed working out until I started working out with trainer Bryan Washington. He makes sure that you are reaching whatever personal goals you may have set for yourself and that you are doing exercises correctly. I have also recently started attending his weight lifting classes and I love them! The 5pm and 6pm strength and conditioning classes are my favorite. This gym is also great for women.
