The manager is very rude and unprofessional. Before the new management this place was actually good. He is passive aggressive and rude to his staff and customers. All the bad reviews about him are true but are replied to with passive aggressive remarks and comments calling them liars even though they're true. He is very childish and doesn't have any empathy or compassion. This review is probably going to get the reply the other ones do- "the manager wasn't even in today this is a lie". This restaurant that reminds me of a bistro with desserts and sandwiches and drinks like ice teas and coffee etc is unpretentious and has an ample seating area. The customer service is excellent and the Chai Latte was delicious the way it should be! The Breakfast sandwich had a savoury fresh tomato and yummy melted cheese and the lemonade slush ice tea was not bad. The ice tea part had a bit of a sour after taste but the lemonade sugars neutralized it. The smell of this cafe changes a lot. Sometimes it's very warm while sometimes it smells differently. Overall the people are pretty laid back and I enjoy the atmosphere of it all. read more

Very cute space, with a cozy vibe that's hard to find in Winnipeg coffee shops. The menu was huge, and the muffin I had was delicious. The only downside was what other folks have noted - my latte was terrible. I wound up tossing it. Still, holding out hope that this was a one off, since this would be a great place to work for a few hours! I didn't try the Wi-Fi, mostly because there was a bit of a line and I didn't want to interrupt the staff to ask for the password. Went early on a Friday and it wasn't too busy, but I can see how the wait could get long, as there was only one person working. Like most of Portage, no dedicated parking, but I've never had a problem finding a spot in the neighborhood. I could see my car from the window. read more

HORRIBLE: only gave one star because I was forced to give a star on this review. Otherwise, I would've left it at zero. My daughter and I have been patrons of the establishment since it first opened. It has been a safe Haven and we got to know all of the staff and managers over the years and referred many people there. I had heard reviews of how poorly run it is by the new owners but I wanted to give it a couple of tries. Today is the last day I will have visited Joe Black. The new owner was condescending and rude to both my daughter and me. My daughter ordered a simple drink with eggnog and he served it to her curdled. He was absolutely horrible when I went to exchange it for a simple black tea, he had the audacity to say that she had ordered something difficult and tried to blame the spoiled drink on her. He's never made that before Shirley it was her fault. It was like a London fog made with eggnog. I proceeded to ask him if he steams the eggnog for the eggnog Lattes and he said yes. I said then I don't understand what is so different from steaming eggnog and adding a shot of espresso or putting in a teabag. He proceeded to tell me that he thought it was cute that I would compare tea and coffee of being the same, I bit my tongue... I will be surprised if they stay in business, as they have completely changed the vibe and I don't think the clientele will put up with such condescending behaviour and poor Service ! read more

Eat the sandwiches, drink the coffee, enjoy the atmosphere:) We just got muffins and the chocolate chai. I would recommend the chocolate chai to anyone. It has a nice kick of ginger. The blueberry muffin was dry but the chocolate chip was moist and perfect. The main thing that will bring me back is sandwiches that we didn't even order. They kept coming out of the kitchen and looked absolutely amazing! The room is nice and cozy and a great place to read or catch up with a friend. read more

I really wanted to love this place- however I feel like for a place that has "coffee" in the name a cappuccino should be drinkable. It was not, I don't know what happened but I took one sip and had to throw the rest out. Unfortunately I took my coffee to go and couldn't ask the barista what went wrong. That was my second time to this establishment, the first time I got the falafel pita. I was either really hungry or this was the best falafel I have ever had. Unfortunately, when I went back the next day I got the turkey club. It was not as good. I had asked the girl at the till to have it on a baguette and I knew I should have repeated myself because it was clear she wasn't listening to me. Also, when I asked to have my ordered changed "to go" because it was taking so long and my lunch break was over, I was greeted with an eye roll and sigh. Prices are very fair, parking is limited, such a nice place, hopefully the owners don't rely on just Portage Ave frontage to get clients through the door. Lots of potential, give it a try! I have been here for lunch a couple of times while in Winnipeg for work. Fresh sandwiches, good eats. And bacon. Food made with love and it's reasonably priced. The cafe is spacious so you don't feel like you are packed in like a Starbucks. But they could spruce it up. And they have wifi. They also do a nice cappuccino. read more

I was very impressed! Beautiful cute coffee place! When we got there there was only one table available that was dirty. I don't blame the staff though because it was so busy and they probably didn't have the chance to clean it yet. I imagined it to be cozier though as in the pictures but anyways super nice place. Nice location in Winnipeg! And I saved the best for last.... The drinks where phenomenal!! Best Espresso drinks I have ever tasted! I hosted an event here recently and the owner was really great to our group and very accommodating. On very short notice (less than a week) they reserved a space which they set up to accommodate our group and also offered attendees a nice discount. When we were there the owner was working behind the counter and was very friendly and pleasant to talk to. He definitely made me feel like my business was appreciated and I'd definitely go back for that level of service alone. On top of the really great service, the place is lovely, with a comfortable, cozy atmosphere and lots of tables and couches, and the fare is also really nice. I had a great Jasmine tea latte and tasted a friend's chocolate cake, which was delicious. I've also eaten here before and the food is great. I can't remember exactly what I had - it was a sandwich with chicken in it - and it was filling and delicious.
