    Great coffee
    Gary H.

The write ups sounded great and overall it turned out to be an awesome breakfast feast! The plan? don't eat for two days and then go down and order the "Big Brekkie". And big it is. A pile of eggs, amazing harsh browns, great toast, and a selection of two meats. I went for the brisket and the bacon. The bacon was to die for. The smokiness came through big time. The brisket was a little disappointing, a bit dry and over-cooked. The egg yolks were to order, easy over, but the whites were a little charred. Great coffee. Get there early and grab a table outside in the shade.

This would be my first time coming to Miss Browns. At first impression, it is hard to tell that the shop was once a Subway joint. The interior is gorgeous, and I love the "wood" sign that is located at the back of the shop (although I think it would look much better if they had installed it on the grey brick wall that's in front of the shop). I ordered a large latte and the brisket hash and fried egg with green onions and sriracha mayo/aioli. My latte was perfect, and probably one of the better lattes I've had. Their coffee beans are sourced from Stumptown Coffee Roasters. The hash was delicious, but as I continued to eat, I found the brisket to start becoming saltier, so I recommend getting a big glass of water to go along with it (which is self-served and located against the wall by the entrance, along with condiments, such as sriracha and tabasco). I'd definitely return again to try their other breakfast and lunch menu items.

I went to Miss Browns a couple weeks ago for the first time, and my high expectations were met. I got the smoked salmon eggs Benedict with potatoes. The eggs were perfectly cooked, the smoked salmon and capers worked so well together. And straight up the potatoes were the best breakfast potatoes I've ever had, they were so crispy and salted just the right amount. Also the staff were very friendly and the food came out fast. Over all I was very pleased with my visit, and next time I'm in the exchange I'll be sure to stop by again.

    Sadly, it is closed.

Had great reviews so I drove down when I was in Winnipeg. Sadly, when I got there, it was closed.

    Brisket on brioche

Winnipeg is having a love-fest with hand crafted sandwich shops - this the fourth one I've tried in the last few months after King + Bannatyne, Nick's on Broadway and Sherbrook Street Deli. Miss Browns is located on William Avenue, just around the corner from Old Market Square off King Street. This used to be a Subway shop but has not been renovated into a bright space that serves up fresh handcrafted sandwiches and coffee. This place seats about 30 people, one big communal table in the middle, counter stool seats facing the window and some two tops lining one side of the space. They use a wood smoker to cook the meats and are the only Cafe/Coffee shop in Winnipeg the sells "Stumptown Coffee" from Portland Oregon. They also source all the products from local producers. You order and pay first, these sandwiches are made fresh and then hot pressed. Sandwiches range from $6.50 to $10, sides are extra for $2.50 for salad or soup or $4 for a larger portion. One of the negatives from this place was the service, unfortunately the person taking food order/payment was a bit scowly. I asked for a detail on one of the sandwiches (which was not listed on the board) and she seemed annoyed by that because she didn't know and had to ask one of her coworkers. She would have been better off making the sandwiches than greeting the public. Smoked Brisket, Fennel Slaw, Spicy Pickled Pepperoncini Peppers, BBq Sauce on Brioche ($10) was unfortunately quite dry but if it was more juicy, it would have been a great sandwich so I'm hoping this was a one off thing. The bbq sauce was not overpower and the fennel slaw really complimented the meat, also loved the brioche. MISS B'S - 3 Cheese Grilled Cheese on rye ($6.50) - I think the cheese selection changes and I can't remember the combination of my recent visit though it was a tad salty. Would taste great with some fruity or jam to offset the cheese. My favorite was the special: smoked lamb, Mint sauce, Greens, Tomato ($10) - awesome and delicious. The lamb was so juicy and tender and the mint sauce was perfect with it. I look forward to coming back and trying their coffee and breakfast. Despite the dry brisket, which I suspect was an off day since the lamb was so good, I'm definitely coming back to try more sandwiches. These are the places they source their products from: "Sleepy Owl Bread" Winnipeg, for Pastries & Bread specials "Gunns Bakery" Winnipeg, for all Bread "Cornell Creme" North-East of Winnipeg, for ice cream "Organic Meadows" Manitoba, Organic Milk "Braman's Greens" East Selkirk MB, for Herbs, Micro Herbs, Arugula and lettuce "All Natural Meats" Carman Manitoba, for our Meat "Nature's Farm" Steinback, Manitoba, for our Free Range Eggs Open: M-F 7am to 5pm. Sat 9am to 3 for Brunch CLOSED SUNDAYS

Great coffee and sandwiches. Local sources and locally owned if you're into that sort of thing.

This is the jalapeño cheese burger. It costs 12 bucks before tax.

It is one of the best cheese burger in town. Must try! The quality of food is way beyond of what you pay. I will for sure come back again for lunch.

    Amazing brisket hash

By far my fave breakfast place in town! The service was amazing and the food was even better. I ordered the brisket hash which had some of the most flavorful brisket I've ever tasted. Usually I'm not a big fan of hash but it went along nicely with the egg and brisket. My friend had the Bennie and he loved it as well! Will absolutely be coming back my next time in Winnipeg!

    Mmmmm sliders

Fantastic coffee, the sliders were amazing too. I must admit the place does not have a lot of seats, but it is intimate. The staff was very friendly and polite, and the emailed receipt made me happy as well (conservation at its finest) Well done

Went for breakfast. Good coffee. Brisket hash was a bit unidimensional in flavor-mostly salt, little else. Egg added little.

Very charming and did everything to make our evening very special. He gave good recommendations and was very attentive without being intrusive. I had the prime rib with Yorkshire pudding, garlic mashed potatoes and roasted red peppers (I specifically asked for those) and my dinner was 5 stars. For dessert I had their Key Lime pie which was melt in your mouth scrumptious. If you want a memorable and wonderful dinner, I highly recommend The Gates.

We came for an early dinner on a Wednesday so it was very quiet in the restaurant. I started with scallops which were cooked perfectly and had a very tasty aioli. For our entree's I had the beef tenderloin, my wife had pork tenderloin and my mother in law had a chicken linguini. My beef was cooked perfectly medium rare and was awesomely seasoned. The accompanying vegetables were great and I had an order of asparagus with bernaise. The bernaise was thicker than I expected but still had good flavour. My wife's pork was filled with apples and other things and wrapped in prosciutto. She said it was the best one of the best pork dishes she had. Lastly my mother in law really enjoyed her pasta We would all come back to The Gates for a special occasion in the future.

It's clear that the current owner has tried to update the place to look more like a Motel 6 than what this beautiful building should be. Cheap renovations and tacky Target bargain furniture and light fixtures have stripped this place of its charm and history. All of the beautiful wood in the unit is painted white now and the hallways are a horrible and depressing dark grey. The furniture is cheap and over sized for the rooms. Room 619 had a bed so tall we had to ask to switch rooms. The front desk suggested they bring us a step ladder instead. Seriously?! We finally switched to 808 which had two regular sized beds that were a normal height and we didn't have to be watched as we went to the bathroom. Not sure why washrooms that face other units don't have window coverings! There are absolutely no amenities in the rooms. No fridge. An $8 plastic bottle of water. A Nespresso with coffee only. You have to ask for tea if you want it. Toiletries in the bathroom need revisiting. They're the same ones from 2010 from L'Occitane; tired, dated and horribly scented. More hotels have switched to more sustainable and options but here, you will still get a shoe mitt and shower cap. One bonus was two robes in each room. There is a small gym but no access to a pool. You can pay $12 next door. Apparently yoga is included, but no one told us about that upon check in for our weeklong stay. The wifi didn't work after the first night and staff weren't overly helpful about it. At $252 a night, this is not what we were expecting. Had we known how downhill this place has gone, we'd have opted for the Holiday Inn. Parking is $22 a night and the front entrance is permanently occupied by crowds of smokers. It's absolutely disgusting. This place is for sale so we really hope that the new buyer will help bring this beauty back from the depths of sadness.
