Once we shared our story, people were popping out of the woodworks with similar stories so AVOID. We purchased our first home and took out home insurance with Wawanesa. Within 1.5 years, they suddenly without any warning sent a home inspector and then came up with a long, long list of recommendations. Being new, we didn't realize this isn't typical and we thought that we had to oblige by adding guardrails, installing safety features, updating electrical panels, etc. We slowly addressed most of the recommendations. We also asked friends and family about home insurance to learn that mostly they didn't have to jump through so many hoops and that many recommendations can be left. Suddenly, without warning, Wawanesa said that they were canceling our home insurance within the month. We thought it would be easy to find other insurance and left it to the brokers who were wanting us to pay twice as much for specialty insurance. With days to spare before insurance lapsed, we found home insurance coverage quickly and easily. Had our home insurance lapsed, however, it would have been much harder to get coverage again. It was incredibly stressful and time-consuming to have to deal with this. There was also mention of a "water incident" that we never had. We have friends who had Wawanesa also suddenly threaten to pull their home insurance, citing issues that would require an expensive premium. As they were nervous that their mortgage would be pulled, they were panicking and scrambled to find other coverage, which again turned out to be no problem. We had other friends who had an even bigger issue with Wawanesa again suddenly canceling home insurance which caused them great stress and struggle and caused them delays in selling their home. Our realtor friends have all shared stories of multiple clients who had negative dealings with Wawanesa. On top of all of this, we paid 800 dollars MORE annually for insurance with them than at the new company AND have had zero insurance claims for the past 3 years in our renovated home, no renters, single homeowners living in the renovated home. It is a shame that this business seems to be fearmongering and preying on the inexperienced newbies. There are MANY better companies out there. I hope those of you with stories to share will post as well to warn others and save them the headache and expense!
