DRIP COFFEE is great. I am a coffee snob and likey coffee black and plain so I can taste the coffee. Their drip is a single origin the roast, where they had Ethiopian Sidamo roast when I visited. It had the vharacteristic blueberry note as normal for the region. Way less expensive and much better quality than the big Star chain! The menu offers pour over coffee, which got me really excited. However the barista told me the pour over machine was broke. Machine? Pour over is literally just pouring water over the coffee in a filter. Weird. Apparently not real baristas. The BACON, EGG AND CHEESE BISQUIT was good. The bacon was thick, good quality piece of pork The place is clean, however the ambulance was felt a little like a cafeteria, and not as cozy as some coffee shops. They have many small tables, with some near power outlets for those that plan to plugin and work. The barista seemed depressed. They were definitely not greeting customers with a happy persona. I hope he is ok. Didn't feel welcomed. Overall, I would come back, but I didn't leave being wow'd. read more

Good morning. It's coffee time and the barista at Joe Van Gogh was able to make a perfect cortado for me today. It went well with the fig and goat cheese scone. Yes, a strange combination but it worked really well. A very comfortable spot that was just what we needed as we started to warm up to our first coffee of the day. We had 2 scones that were very good, one with spinach and the other with lemon. We were served promptly after being welcomed, and received our iced coffees and scones quickly. I tried a seasonal syrup, brown sugar rosemary, in my latte and it was wonderful. I like that their syrups are all made in house. Also, I prefer skim milk in my latte and decaf coffee, and they had both, but plenty of milk alternatives are available. There's plenty of seating inside and outside. It was good tea and quick service. I just think it's a little pricey like most coffee places. A really big "nope" for me was when they charged my card but asked if I wanted to leave a tip. Honestly asking out loud and not letting the person choose/ how much they leave is a bit rude. Socially you are forced to say yes unless you want to be judged harshly. That's why I took off another star. That needs to be up to the customer privately. Also its kinda of annoying to have to use a mask even though 95% of places have dropped it and are encouraging them but not REQUIRING them. Joe Van Gogh is my favorite coffee shop in Durham, and the Broad Street location is the one I go to most often. They don't charge extra for plant milks, their to-go packaging is all compostable, an they have an option for ceramic mugs and plates for dine-in (except when they are close to closing, which is fair). The coffee and chai are good. I usually get the mocha or the seasonal latte, which is are usually sweet, but not too sweet. There are some pastries and breakfast sandwiches, including a veggie sausage sandwich and some vegan pastries, which are pretty good. The Broad Street store is one of the smaller locations and good for studying and people watching, and usually has interesting local art on the walls. There are tables and The aesthetics are the typical hipster cafe look of the 2020s--white walls, wooden accents, lots of plants. I don't mind this look, though I miss the days when coffee shops were more varied and interesting. read more

This place has been a favorite of mine for a long time, but my visitation fell off. Recently a Starbucks opened up about a 1/2 mile away, but they're always crazy busy and stop taking on-line orders when they are. Then you have to wait in a 15-car drive thru line. You can drive over to Joe Van Gogh, order a drink, get the drink, and drink the drink in less time than that line would have taken. I can say all sorts of great things, but that's what brought me back to this place and reminded me of how much I love it and the baristas. I've recently been drinking decaf for health reasons and am always afraid to order at coffee shops in the event that the barista accidentally forgets to use decaf espresso (after experiencing getting wrong orders at other coffee shops multiple times!) But at Joe Van Gogh, I've never felt skeptical or questioned whether or not my order was done correctly. The baristas take great care in their coffee creations, repeating back your order and clearly announcing the drink order after it's made. I really wanted to like this place but the service and atmosphere at this coffee shop is really bad. It's dimly lit and the baristas rarely, if ever, greet you with a smile. I used to go here and so have visited over 10+ times to grab coffee and every time the service is bad. The coffee also tends to be too sour and too hot as well. Very popular coffee shop in a strip mall near my friends' house. There was a line when we arrived but the staff was hustling so it moved quickly. My niece and I enjoyed delicious hot chocolate and some yummy cinnamon twists. The space was a bit tight...because it's so popular and there wasn't much seating...or parking for that matter. The coffee and food are very good and the service is generally good, too. The problem I have is that it's just so dirty inside. The floors are always filthy and so are the tables. Honestly, it just disgusts me. I don't feel like I can put my bag on the floor here. I don't think they do any tidying up throughout the day, like sweeping or wiping tables. I don't think their cleaning staff does a great job either. Here's my view from my table when I look down. It's lunch time, so I'm thinking this isn't just from this morning. During my visit, an Ethiopian natural brought rich body and fruitiness to the brew with luscious results. A rare Sumatran natural microlot was a magnificent pourover. Thank you, Cup A Joe, for having power outlets, chairs that are juuuuust comfty enough, free wireless, and strong coffee. Oh, and the cookies. I love the cookies. In fact, I'm in the middle of a sugar and caffiene high from sitting here for an hour, and I just realized that I am suddenly MOTIVATED! Now that's a good cup. Love, love, love this place. The more I come, the more that I find to love. It was the chai that initially attracted to Joe Van Gogh - I remember a period of time when I would come here every morning before school to grab a wonderfully spiced hot soy chai latte to bring to class. Like I mentioned in my previous review, the chai concentrate is made in house, and they don't use a boxed concentrate like Tazo or Oregon Chai like most other coffee shops. I think the freshness of an original chai concentrate is what makes the chai latte here so spectacular. Have it hot or iced, and add soy if you want to have a sweeter (and in my opinion, more refreshing) taste. Recently, I've tried several more of the items on the menu, and I haven't been disappointed. Joe Van Gogh makes hell of an espresso - the soy iced latte is just spectacular. The espresso flavor is perfectly balanced (not too bitter) with the creaminess of soy milk, making for one of the most flavorful and refreshing soy lattes that I've ever had. They've also recently added macadamia milk to their menu, which you can substitute for regular milk in any drink. I haven't seen macadamia milk in any other coffee shop before, and the taste of it is so creamy with a bit of nuttiness and sweetness that makes for a delightful treat! I would definitely recommend trying it in your favorite coffee shop beverage. I also love that Joe Van Gogh has great accompaniments for your beverage from sugar syrup to cardamom and my personal favorite, Truvia (stevia)! Not many shops will want to invest in more expensive sweeteners, which makes me really appreciate the ones who do. The staff members are also super nice and welcoming. Always willing to start a conversation along with your morning coffee. Wi-fi is fast and free, and there is a lot of seating (indoors, outdoors, sofas) with outlets if you want to do work. Lots of natural lighting from the wall of windows, which is so pleasant. I would describe Joe Van Gogh as the ideal local coffee shop, with a cork-board for local advertisements, a free book exchange, and paintings for sale by local artists hung along the wall. Quality coffee well prepared by a staff mindful of customers' safety. I am happy to pay more for quality: the coffee here is good (my no-frills cortado was delicious and very nice-looking, too), and as an older customer who has to be very careful about covid exposure, I'm very grateful that this coffee shop does not pretend the pandemic is over (it isn't, but exposure can be minimized by wearing a mask when surrounded by other people). Yes, you take off your mask to drink your coffee and eat your snack (the baked goods are nice, but I found the sandwich on foccaccia a bit too heavy), but you're at your own table, not in a group milling around the counter. The place is nice and airy, with lots of blond wood and natural light, and in warm weather the sidewalk seating is very pleasant. read more

Atmosphere: Still requiring masks??? Seriously? It would be nice if all establishments requiring their paying customers to wear a mask to also provide a brief list of scientific papers that demonstrate the ability of common disposable surgical masks to prevent the spread of Covid. You could places them right next to your "masks required" sign. Better yet, how about just one? Not multiple sources but one would be nice. I guarantee you will NOT be able to find one. This establishment is small, and yet in their superior logic, if your head is at a seated height then you're able to remove your mask. Please show me the scientific proof that that also is an effective way to prevent the spread of Covid. So when I'm standing and my head is at a specific height I need to wear a mask but when I'm seated I do not? Does this also apply to children whose heads are sometimes even lower than a seated adult when standing? Could you give me the distance from the floor up to a height that becomes unsafe so that I can remain below it? Should I crawl in through the front door? Coming from a group of people that claim to be supporters of science this demonstration of irrationality clearly has me scratching my head. Oh wait, just not that science, right? Another dystopian feature from this anti-authoritarian authoritarian group is that they have these gigantic plexiglass squares surrounding the cash register area with a speaker that transmits their voice to you and your voice back to them, much like at a teller window drive-through at a bank. Absolutely laughable. So let me get this straight, 3 feet to my right and 3 feet to my left there are no pixie glass squares but somehow the air that you're breathing and the air they're breathing does not mix. Furthermore the air that's being circulated through the entire establishment goes into an air return in and out the vents, so unless their AC and heating system can kill the Covid virus with some sort of filtration system then this is just for show. They also have reduced seating, I believe four tables. Not sure the scientific reasoning for that as well, but OK. Establishments that do this out of political reasons and ignore the science that they supposedly support really makes me uncomfortable, and why would I give money to such ignorance? I would understand if it's a medical center or some other medical clinic and folks don't have a choice but to go to that particular location. But this is a coffee shop, people choose to go there. Don't worry we know everybody there is very liberal and you are scared to death the Trump is going to come back and start up with his mean tweets again. So continue with your pseudoscience to let everybody know that you're extremely liberal in the face logic and reason that you supposedly claim that you support. And lastly, the coffee is not great. Great, quiet coffeehouse to get work done! I love it because it doesn't get obnoxiously crowded around finals like places closer to campus, and there is plenty of parking in this complex. I usually go for chai lattes, but the matcha latte here is amazing and the chocolate croissant is the perfect study snack! Their smoothies are actually surprisingly delicious. I always go for peach/mango and love it every time! They have a rewards card system where you buy 12 espresso or steamed milk drinks and you get one free.
