This is a great local coffee shop in Chapel Hill and the welcoming yellow hues are a nice touch. I believe the original coffee shop is in Durham and I was happy to find this location on yelp while we were in the Timberlyne shopping center. You can purchase fresh coffee beans and grind them yourself. The coffee and tea drinks are listed in the chalkboard and the friendly baristas made hand-crafted drinks with artistic touches and fresh ingredients. Many people come here to study or work on their computer and we found plenty of seating inside and also outside. I had a cappuccino and you specify for here or to go as you place your order. My drink was delicious and I love drinking out of a real mug when staying in a coffee shop. Local artwork and photos are featured on the walls and you can also purchase Joe Van Gogh T-shirts. There were also a fee baked good and bagels in the glass counter to enjoy. I love supporting local coffee shops and found this to be a relaxing stop while in this part of Chapel Hill. read more

Dang. I was pretty disappointed when I found out the lavender syrup at Joe Van Gogh is only seasonal. Thanks to Cat P's review my heart was set on an iced lavender latte with macadamia nut milk. Heart...broken. Well, I still got the macadamia nut milk which made me pretty happy. That in and of itself made it the best vanilla latte I've ever had (though I can't say that's a drink I order frequently). They roast their own beans which you can buy there or at Southern Season. They used the espresso blend in my latte and the Don Isidro microlot from Nicaragua for the iced coffee of the day, which they have on tap. The Don Isidro was pretty light bodied so I would have preferred without milk - the macadamia nut milk was a bit too over powering despite the fact that there was only about a tablespoon's worth in there. JVG is in a Food Lion shopping complex. If your GPS doesn't take you directly there, it's in a back corner of the complex, about as far away from the Food Lion as possible. It's not exactly a coffee shop I'd want to go lounge in all day but it serves its purpose and at some point in the year they have lavender lattes. Until that day, where can I buy some lavender syrup so I can make them myself? read more

Cup A Joe is my go to coffee place if I don't get a chance to make my coffee from home and I don't want to put any more money into the greedy pockets of Starbucks. I believe the prices are less than Starbucks , and the coffee is just as good. Not sure if they do all the fancy options that they do at Starbucks because I usually just get a regular coffee or a latte. They have a variety of options for the adventurous types which are listed on a large chalk board behind the counter. The service is generally friendly and the baristas are quick when there is a long line of people waiting, which is common in the mornings. A lot of people like to hang out here with their computers, so I would say this would be a good place to plugin and do some work or have a business meeting. I personally have not done so, however. This location also has some outside seating so people can enjoy their beverages while reading an Indpendent magazine . Dog friendly outside as well (they even have dog bowls available). read more

The question that always pops into my mind as I enter the lot of the complex that houses this Joe Van Gogh location is: "Why is this lot always so packed?" Seriously, it's often to the point that cars are lined up along the outside of the lot! Where are all these people? But I digress... This JVG location is above solid. The coffee drinks are good and strong. The baristas are among the friendliest you shall ever encounter. There is a pervasive laid back vibe. There's free wi-fi, and there's plenty of seating. Also, it's next to Chelsea Theater which is an awesome local, independent movie theater. In fact, the door linking the two establishments is often left open so you can easily pop in for a pre or post movie caffeinated beverage. One thing is for sure: If I lived in Chapel Hill, I'd be frequenting this gem quite often! read more

Wow, I received very poor service (disrespectful) from a female barista. I came by Friday morning to get 3 coffees to go and leave room for cream. She first complained I was getting so much coffee (why?). Then she proceeded to fill multiple cups using different coffee drips. I kindly asked if each was the same brand coffee. She replied something to the effect of..."They are different, but what does it matter to you. They are just coffee." Well, I do care what kind of coffee I am getting. I was stunned by her poor attitude. She also didn't leave room for cream so I had to poor some out from each to fit it in. Very poor service. [I do want to note there was a male barista who was kind and told me the two different coffees were somewhat similar in tasted and gave me a multiple coffee holder]. As with the other Joey Van G's, you can tell that the baristas know what the eff they're doing. Very signature, flavorful cappuccinos in particular. While it is part of a suburbanesque shopping center, it satisfies a need for this part of Chapel Hill, as there's not much of this kinda thing this far away from Franklin St. The parking is ample, and seating is reasonable (tends to get crowded with moms and ECH kids after school, but welcome to coffee shops in Chapel Hill if you're not used to them being crowded). My only complaint is that I think they need to up their bakery game a little bit. i don't know who makes their muffins, but they're just not that good. Okay service but great drinks and interesting, folksy song choices. They offered lavender syrup when we stopped by last week, so I had to get it in my latte. Probably the best thing about Joe Van Gogh: They offer macadamia nut milk!!!! Wow! I've never ever seen that in a coffee shop before, not even most grocery stores. Pretty impressed. The area's crunchy granola vibe probably has something to do with it... Anyway, the lavender syrup, good chai, and macadamia nut milk was a winning combination. Like the environment. Cup a Joe is exactly what a coffee house should be: Good coffee, friendly service, artsy atmosphere, and good prices, and absolutely no pretension. Thank god. I'm not usually much of a coffee man, but these guys really do things right. There's not a whole lot in the way of frills, but they've got enough basic varieties of coffee to keep all but the most picky people well-satisfied. The atmosphere is fantastic, a nice balance of esoteric art and mom-and-pop simplicity. The staff and clientele are invariably friendly and in good humor, so you're guaranteed a laugh when you walk in. An excellent source of java. read more

Same great coffee as the Durham location (of Joe Van Gogh),* but better atmosphere. Less packed-in feeling, more laid-back environment. Added features of Weaver St. croissants (including ham & cheese and spinach & cheese) and something called "granny bars," which are delicious. Sometimes it gets crowded with a before/after theater crowd, and sometimes the line moves painfully slow for no apparent reason. (The latter is also true of the Durham location.) So aim for a relaxed stop, not a quick in-n-out stop. ------------------------------------ Footnote: * The whole naming scheme is confusing. As far as I understand it, there are three entities: (1) this place (this Cup A Joe location) is connected to the Durham and Duke-campus locations of Joe Van Gogh, and they all use the same stamp cards for your regular-customer convenience; (2) the Raleigh locations of Cup A Joe constitute another entity; and (3) the Hillsborough Cup A Joe is entirely separate. I used to drive all the way to Durham for some Joe Van Gogh coffee until I discovered there was one in Chapel Hill! There's lots of sdaring and I really appreciate all the windows rbat provide enough sunlight to help me feel a little less blue whilst I'm drifting. I would like to respond to Brian W.'s review. FIRST of all, Chapel Hill is NOT the boonies, anywhere. Cup A Joe is in the suburbs, not the mountains. Please get it right. As a native Chapel Hill resident it pisses me off when ppl say these things about the Hill. And, Cup A Joe is a great coffee shop. I've been going there forever. The reason I drink coffee is because of Robby, and the reason his kids are able to go to school are b/c my parents spend a lot of money there (they probably spend too much on coffee, and they're both addicted). The atmosphere is perfect for a relaxing hour of reading, studying, or chatting. They have a wonderful selection of drinks, coffee or otherwise, and the pastries are great, too. I don't like the vegan stuff, though, but the scones are perfect with an iced latte. It's really easy to get to know ppl there, b/c you'll recognize the baristas if you go there often enough (at least once a week, for example). That's probably my favorite thing about most places in Chapel Hill. read more

Nice coffeehouse in Timberlyne shopping center. They have both outdoor and indoor seating. They have a unique selection of lattes, including honey almond and lavender. I tried the honey almond with macadamia nut milk (they don't have almond milk, only nondairy options are macadamia milk and oat milk) and I liked it but it wasn't my favorite. I wished I had tried the lavender! This is a nice change from a chain coffee house, but probably won't be my go to coffee place. read more

Joe Van Gogh is a great place to meet a colleague or get work done. The staff is friendly and they have a limited but good menu. But I have to say that their chai is ridiculously bad. I paid over $5 for a chai that I ended up throwing away because it tasted so bad. It wasn't even hot and it basically tasted like milk mixed with water. I'm sure I'll be back just because it's the closest coffee shop to work but will not order the chai again. read more

Working at Red Hat on Centennial, I pick Cup a Joe over Port City every time. Cup A Joe's Mission Valley location always produces a cup of fresh-brewed coffee, with strong flavors and a true-to-form atmosphere. Great fresh roasted gourmet coffee, free wi-fi access, makes this is a great place to drop in for a quick cup or to sit and study or chat. I have been a customer of this particular shop for over 20 years. Usually had a good experience. Til yesterday. I would think since we are in the midst of a global crisis and I'm able and willing to support local businesses, that the manager, Josh, would be, at the least, polite. I accidentally placed my online order for a different store and showed up at jvg timberline and waited for a few minutes outside the shop for my beverages. The employees looked right at me and kept their feet up on the table and looked back at their phones. I waved to hey their attention. Josh opens the door with no greeting , just a look of disgust. I said "hi! I placed an order". He said they didn't get an order. I showed him on my phone the proof of purchase. He said "well, that's for the broad street location ". I replied " I can't go all the way over there " he replies "so, you want a latte?" I say back "well, I paid for 2, so if I could get 2, that would be great!". He closes the door, comes back , puts the drinks on the table and says "next time place your order for the right location ". So, my question is where did josh learn about customer service or manners in general? Is this how JVG wants their managers to treat customers ?? read more

I mean, fuck the wifi. my mac kept having this "lost connect" thing popped up. And it really pissed me off cuz I am trying to do my homework online. Good coffee selection and knowledgable staff, this cafe also opens into a delightful movie theater on one side - The Chelsea. Dogs welcome outside and plenty of good seating there. I literally go to this place every morning, I get myself an amazing 4 shot med. cap, or a 5 shot large cap. The staff knows what I want before I get in, I know almost everyone that works there and they know me. They have always been wonderful to me, the owner is awesome and I know him by name and personally. The place has always been the best coffee place I've ever been to and the people who make your coffee really care about their work and love what they do. I LOVE JOE VAN GOGH! Updating my review. Recently went back here due to a friend wanting to meet up in person (we're both fully vaccinated). I've been back a couple times since then - the staff is a lot more friendly and the coffee is lovely. They definitely are taking the pandemic seriously and have you order/pick up from the door of the store. The staff wear their masks correctly and everything seems clean from what I can see. My favorite coffee shop in Chapel Hill & Carrboro! The staff is very knowledgeable and super friendly. The space is clean and great for reading a book or plugging into your laptop and working. They have an abundance of outlets and free wifi! The service here is 100% above that of Open Eye (got to love that place too, but only if you can handle waiting 20 minutes for them to figure out how to make 2 lattes and then another 15 minutes because oh wait...they forgot to make latte #2. I've been a patron of this coffee shop for some time now. I've been coming so long that I remember when they were open until 9:30pm and kept customer rewards cards in a filebox so that you didn't have to carry it around...smile. I absolutely LOVE this coffee shop. It's an important part of the community and the daily routine for many people. The baristas bring such an interesting mix of personality and expertise (in other areas in addition to coffee) that getting to know them is an extra treat on top of the fantastic coffee. I highly suggest that folks take the time to say hello and get to know this interesting group. Also-whenever there is a snow storm or inclement weather that closes most establishments, Joe Van Gogh is open to give the community a place to convene for conversation and fellowship. I loved this coffee shop! While they did not have almond milk, they did offer macadamia nut milk which is even better. JVG is a nice change from Starbucks with with a wide range of pastries as well. Joe Van Gogh is one of my favorite coffee places in town. They have great coffee, and service. They occasionally have interesting coffee drinks. For instance, they sometimes have herb infused coffee drinks, such as a rosemary iced latte, I found the drink completely refreshing, in comparison to the typical latte drinks I find at other establishments. Joe also has other interesting drinks and styles of drip coffee which are definitely worth trying. One of my only complaints is the small space. Joe is probably not the ideal place for a larger study group considering the limited seating. In addition, I've been to Joe a few times and they were out of certain food times such as danishes, muffins and croissants. Although I understand they don't make baked items in house, it would be great if they had something other than a bagel during the middle of the day. read more

This is quite honestly the best coffee house in the Triangle area, with the absolute best people working. I've been going here for 20+ years. Unfortunately, I've seen too many baristas here lose their jobs simply because some obnoxious customer decided they weren't friendly enough. Firing hard workers for being human is not the way to ensure loyalty from longtime customers. Reviewers on here who are expecting to have overworked, exhausted baristas smile at them and be happy all the time need to go somewhere else. Try being in the service industry and always "on." Not everyone is an extrovert with unlimited emotional energy. Get off your high horses. read more

They make the best lattes in town. A few of the staff often cross the line between just being sarcastic and actually being dismissive of their customers. I've had the amount of the tip I give analyzed; seen a customer be given a sarcastic reply to an honest question. They used to sell in-store gift cards that could be swiped. When the system stopped working the staff would just ask for cash and never bother to find a way to redeem the card. So it's a mixed bag...if you get there when the really cool staff are there you are in luck. If you wind up being treated with sarcasm...there are other choices out there. read more
