Nice quick weekend getaway. Facilities are nice and clean. The lodge has a restaurant on site. Prices are reasonable. All rooms in the lodge have a lake view which is nice plus a balcony. We used the paddle boat and which was fun. You can also fish. There is a sunset cruise boat you can do ($25 per person) cash only. Beautiful scenery! Nice place for the money. Showers were very clean and the water was good and hot. We were there when it was below freezing temperatures and the bath house had extra heaters going so it was very warm in the bath houses. read more

What they say in writing they do not honor. We made reservations several weeks before our stay. We realized we would probably not be able to stay at the park and the NY dinner. We contacted the reservations desk 4 days before the dinner and stay as the e-mail reservation confirmation said we had 72 hours before stay to cancel. They said we had 7 days to cancel. We were headed back, and thought we would check out the lodge and park on our way back home. The Lodge looks run down, one of the grand fire places had bricks falling out of the inside of the chimney and instead of logs or a gas fire logs, there were candles. We would get some lunch in the restaurant before going on, or staying for maybe the dinner portion of the package. We went down the stairs to the restaurant and the stairs were dirty and had dried mud tracked down them like they hadn't been cleaned in days. The restaurant has what could be large beautiful glasses windows from the 1st floor of the lodge to the basement portion of the restaurant. The windows were horribly dirty and looked like they hadn't been cleaned in weeks or even months. When we got to the restaurant to get some lunch, we asked for a menu, and they said we have a full menu, please have a seat. We said, we would like to see the menu, she said, "please. Have a seat." we said, we want to have a menu to read, and the attendant finally handed us one. The menu was a photo copy, one side upside down. the celebration room for NY dinner is in a large banquet room without any windows, when they have what could e a beautiful and large restaurant looking out at the river and stars for the New Years. The electrical conduits around the front outside of hotel are falling down and in open stair well have open wires exposed to water and elements. The fire hose and fire box look like the hose is rotting and need to be inspected by the AHJ, authority having jurisdiction. The State Government should consider leasing the property to Hilton or Marriott to be managed. read more

Perfect getaway as usual. The scenery is gorgeous. The deer just stop and look at you on the roadside and the trails. Beautiful sunset from the trail closest to the lodge. Yes the building is old, but they have done a great job of keeping it updated. Breakfast and lunch were great! Lots to choose from on the buffet and prime rib as an extra bonus! Sadly it is off season so they close after lunch on Sunday and do not reopen until Thursday. read more

My husband and I came here for a weekend trip. We opted to stay in a cottage by the lake so we could fish and enjoy the peace and quiet. The cottage was very pretty. It was clean and furnished nicely. The beds were more comfortable than Guntersville State park cabins but still not like being at home. The cottage was large enough for 6-8 people. Loved the back porch with rockers. It had a wonderful view of the lake. We also enjoyed the pier for fishing but the walk down to the pier was quite steep on a rocky trail. There were families of deer everywhere and they were such a joy to watch. Overall we really enjoyed our stay and it offered the relaxation we needed! It's a beautiful park and I would highly recommend this to anyone looking for a mini vaca away from the hustle and bustle of typical tourist towns. read more

Sugar Bear and I stayed here a few years ago during one of our trips to Rogersville. We were pleasantly surprised! It is a rustic lodge with spacious, clean accommodations. Our suite had a mini kitchen in it. During our stay, the lodge was pretty crowded due to the huge fishing tournament. It was a really fun place to stay though! Highly recommended. read more

CAMPGROUND REVIEW: Yes. We'd stay here again. The campground was a nice size with lots of different sized sites. We were here for the Fourth Of July Weekend, so it was PACKED! Lots of families with kids. Golf carts everywhere. Still, everyone seemed respectful of their neighbors. No large loud party goers keeping everyone up. Multiple rangers patrol so I guess that's why everyone was so well behaved, but those same rangers were VERY polite and seemed to enjoy their jobs. There is a boat ramp in the primitive campground so we launched our kayak from that area. The bath houses were heavily used during this busy period, but the park did a nice job keeping them clean and stocked. The closest grocery store is about 10 minutes away, and it is small (Foodland). Others have commented on the beauty of the park so I won't, but it IS a very pretty place to spend some time... read more

We went camping for two nights at Joe Wheeler. The Park was nice and the campground was fairly nice as well - with the exception of the bath houses. They were sub-par and way too small for the number of campsites. There were 43 campsites in our loop but only two toilets for the men - one of which was out of order. At one point none of the women's toilets were working. I've been in much better showers for a campground but then again I have been in worse as well. If you like the water, don't come before mid-April because the water level is still way down prior to that. Lastly, the camp store was pretty bare so you had to go all the way into Rogersville if you needed anything substantial. However, the store attendant was the nicest lady I have ever met and very helpful. We needed an RV service call and she gave us a great referral (Andy's RV in Decatur and they make house calls). So I don't give it a bad rating but likewise I don't give it a great one either. We may try coming again in a few weeks to see if things are better. read more

I rented a cottage at Joe Wheeler state park. It was on the river. It was the best I have stayed at in Alabama. The cottages are 1 year old. They had cable, DVD player, very nice kitchen and bedrooms and bathroom. The ac was great too. They also have a pier where you can fish and you could rent a pontoon boat. The pool at the lodge was nice. The only thing that wasn't so great was the beach. The bathroom at the beach was dirty. I would recommend it. read more

I was here for a UAB departmental retreat and was impressed with the landscape and the size of this park. I only had a few hours to explore during our downtime but I appreciated the well-maintained lakeview trails. That being said, a few more signs would have been helpful for those not carrying a smart phone or map. I ended up stringing up a hammock in one of the small coves and enjoying an afternoon siesta... so serene! read more

Campground Review. The nature aspect was beautiful. The management of the site was terrible. The bath house cleaning was bad with sprayed feces remaining on the toilets for days. There was no hand soap in the bath houses. They were in bad need of updating. There were many low hanging branches that had to be dodged on the entrance of the park. As with many of the Alabama parks it is becomming a permanant residence for many campers and all their stuff. We had to back out of our pull through site because the site in front of us was a permenant site. The truck was protruding about 2 feet into the narrow street on a curve which greatly limited our ability to move around the curve. In addition the site had a utility trailer, golf cart, dog pen and many outdoor toys. On some of the open areas folks had parked boats and additional vehicles. There were too many park volunteers taking up sites and all I ever saw them do was check to make sure you had a parking sign before you even got set up. The office staff said the full time workers stayed very busy. With all the work needed, I never saw a full time worker actually working. I did see many riding around in trucks. Basically, if you are looking for a State of Alabama subsidized (my tax dollars) place for a permenant residence, this is your place. If you are looking for a nice campsite for vacationing, I would not recommend it. Alapark does not have a place to review on their site. I feel this is because they don't want to know of any problems at the parks. read more
