This campground is now Unhitched Wheeler Lake. No longer a KOA. That had no impact on our visit. We stayed in site 46 which had the best sitting area overlooking the boat ramp and lake. There was a massive may fly (willow fly) hatch which prevented using the beach area. The owners apologized several times but they can't control nature. If you enjoy boating, fishing, kayaking, swimming...this is the campground for you. read more

I would give this campground zero stars if I could. This was hands down one of the worst places I've ever stayed. The biggest issue, though, was the staff. Completely unhelpful and seemed to care less about anything going on. Any concerns were brushed off like they didn't matter. read more

Cops got called on us for being in our spot in the shade! Host put sticks on the road way trying to make us crash because we were riding electric bikes that are allowed. We were walking the road way and whispering and just told us to be quiet! Had expired ice cream and tried to sell it to us after they told us it was expired! Host was also smoking marijuana, it was very strong and noticeable. Host jumped out in front of a kid in the dark, telling her to be quiet when she was just riding her bicycle. Host hates kids and won't let them have any fun. The cops laughed at the hosts because we were doing absolutely nothing wrong, the hosts kept making up rules and lying to the cops to try and get us kicked out. This was the worst camping experience we've ever had and we've camped all over northwest and east Alabama. They should be reported to KOA Corporate, this is the absolute worst KOA I've ever seen. We are glad we aren't welcome back. They can post about it all they want and lie all they want. You could see where the stick was drug to the road in the dirt. This place is way overrated and the new staff is RUDE. We never even wanted to go this year but it was the only place open so we decided to go. We are SO glad we aren't welcome back. read more

Easy accessible campground. We parked in site 304 long enough for fifth wheel toy hauler and truck. Well laid out. Walking around campground was great nice marina and swimming section. Plenty of activities for all ages. Restroom were clean and spacious. Laundry room had 3 washer and 3 dryers. read more

I had a tent site next to the water. It was nice except for the ants. The wifi wasn't reliable but that was okay. I enjoyed the rental of the kayak but the staff did not seem to be knowledgeable about different kayaks and paddles. The bathrooms need to be updated and one had bugs due to the door being unable to shut. It's a nice campground but pricey. read more

We were there over the labor day weekend for 3 nights. They charged 45.00 a night plus a 5.00 a night amenities fee which brought the total to 50. dollars. The only amenities that they had was the lake and you could purchase propane. The WiFi didn't work in the campground only at the store which is about 1/4 of a mile away. The sites were nice and graveled and spaced apart very well. Interior roads were paved and the bath house was clean. All in all a nice campground but it's pricey for what you get. read more

What a beautiful hidden gem! This park is pristine, the owners and staff are amazing super friendly. Best campground ever stayed at!!

We arrived at this KOA in our 34' fifth wheel. This is a big campground! There are basically two different campgrounds, with a small area next to the office, and then a larger area down by the water's edge. Between those, is a swim beach, pavilion, and a rope ladder park, strung between several trees. The bathrooms are modern, and there is a really great boat launch area. We were directed to a pull-through site #102. We were disappointed in that there was a lot of fresh dog crap outside the door, under the picnic table, all over the area, which our 3 grandkids proceeded to track in to the RV. It really dampened the stay, and I was prepared to post a bad review, in part because of this, as I assumed that some of the more "permanent" guests were allowing their dogs to use this site as a bathroom area! But, then I met Herman. Herman is the grounds keeper. A very polite, dedicated "team member" as he put it, who takes care of this huge campground. It appears he is very good at that. I explained the issue with the doggy do, and he apologized, explaining that he should've checked the site before our arrival, as another camper was staying on it, and pulled out that morning. His time is spread thin, as this place is huge for one man to attend. Herman said they were planning to employ more help in the future, and that "the team" has plans to expand into an RV resort park. If all the people who work there have the same dedication to the campground that Herman has, I'm sure it will happen! So, our stay was 2 stars, but Herman earned a rating of an additional 2 stars! I'm sure the poop was an unfortunate situation, left there by the former tenants, and not from the more permanent guests. I would recommend this KOA to check out. It is quite different than the traditional KOAs! read more

Super friendly management and staff! Was so quick to show us around the campground and even showed us how they're improving the facilities! The views are fantastic pretty much anywhere around the campsites and they have plenty of snacks for day trippers in the shop. Super excited to see how this place progresses with the new owners! When on a cross country journey, it's important to find comfortable and affordable places to rest in order to keep yourself happy and healthy. I can say without doubt, that The Decatur/Wheeler Lake KOA Holiday was that place of comfort and more! While the campground is a bit off the beaten path, you'll find that the extra distance is beyond worth it. We were greeted by friendly and helpful staff that got us checked in and relaxing in no time. But don't think the calming waves of the nearby river or the wonderful sounds of nature are all this camp has to offer. I had the opportunity to rent one of their electric bicycles and was treated to a truly lovely sight seeing journey around what has to be the most beautiful and well-kept campground I've had the chance to stay at. A smart KOA owner knows when to let the majesty of nature do its job, and the folks at the Decatur/Wheeler Lake KOA Holiday are absolute geniuses! A beautiful campground combined with a dynamite staff and wonderful views make for a MUST stay location! Not only did I love my stay here, but you better believe I'll be coming back to stay in the future! read more

Run down. Most sites were overrun by poison ivy, bathrooms hadn't been cleaned our entire stay, staff was useless. Kids kept stepping in glass at the beach area. Restroom at beach area had one stall with just an open hole where a toilet should be, the shower had no water and drain to outdoor shower was backed up so you had to stand in nasty slush to rinse off. Beautiful KOA! Most of the KOA's we have stayed at are close to the highway and convenient. This KOA is not close to the highway but reminds us of a state or federal campsite. It has trees, beaches and beautiful Lake Wheeler. It is beautiful, quiet, and a true gem. read more

Loved this beautiful campground. Spacious and level sites with the most gorgeous sunrises. We didn't swim or fish and we didn't use the bathrooms so we can't comment on that but it was VERY quiet except for the morning birds. We added a second night because we were enjoying the R&R so much. The price seemed to be a tad high from what we have been paying along the way from California, but we would go out of our way to stay here again if ever passing thru. read more

This is the worst KOA I have stayed at. The check in process was rushed, and the tent sites are limited. The barbeques located at the tent sites are so corroded they are unusable. The campground is right across the lake from a nuclear power plant, and the lake is toxic due to all the industry in the area. The campground advertised Wi-Fi and fishing, but there was no Wi-Fi available and you certainly don't want to eat any fish in this lake. I certainly would not recommend swimming, boating, kayaking, jet skiing, water skiing, or any activities that expose you to this water. This is not a campground; it's an industry dumping ground. read more

Worst KOA I have ever been to. It won't let me give a haft star. First I don't get how the can call it Decatur it is away from the town. Second too many speed bumps in the camp ground for towing a popup. Third garbage hanging on the pole by the site from previous person. Site had steps going down to the Picnic table. One of the people in my party fell going down them. Forth the bathroom looked like they haven't been cleaned all year. Showers so outdated. Only 1 working toilet in the men's bathroom. We will never stay there again. read more

Why is this being called Decatur /KOA? It's not in the same county much less Decatur. We don't go here anymore since KOA took over. They jacked up the rates and still charge extra fees for anything they can come up with. We had our hopes it would be better so we were sorely disappointed when their prices became available.
