Wrong consistency, practically a liquid in the center

Unfortunately updating my original 5 star review. I order a cheesecake from cafe lacchine/Johanna's every year for birthdays. This year was such a disappointment. The cake was not properly prepared, and without confirming they added a vanilla frosting to the top(??). We specifically requested a plain cheesecake with solely a 'happy birthday' on the top. After immediately taking the cake from the fridge, the center of the cake was a complete custard/liquid. It was over cooked on the crust and undercooked throughout the entire cake. Next time we will be ordering elsewhere. Such a shame since we drove out of our way to give them our business. See photos for an example of the quality we received.

I came with a party of 8 and we almost left because we were told it may be a 30-45 minute wait, but luckily a couple parties got up and we could be seated sooner than that. I am SO GLAD that we stayed! The food was amazing, and presentation was beautiful. I'm not much of a breakfast person, so that's saying a lot! What I tasted: Eggs Benedict with Crabcake ($12) Biscuits & Gravy ($9) Chicken Biscuit with Cheddar & Bacon ($7) Stuffed French Toast ($11) You can get the Eggs Benedict with either black forest ham or crabcake for an additional $2, and it comes with a side of roasted potatoes. This was actually my first time to ever have Eggs Benedict; I opted for the crabcake & loved it! The egg was perfectly poached. Hollandaise sauce was creamy, tangy, and savory all at the same time. The crabcake was delicious. The Eggs Benedict is a breakfast special only available until 11:30 am, but they have a crabcake breakfast sandwich that is served all day. Biscuits & Gravy is a very simple dish, but theirs were really good! I had a bite and really liked it. This comes with a side as well. My brother got sausage with his. The chicken biscuit was just okay to me. I don't care much for chicken biscuits in the first place, though. My girlfriend, who is a huge fan of Chik-fil-A chicken biscuits, said it was pretty average. She mentioned that it was filling, but would probably order something else next time. The best thing I tried was the Stuffed French Toast. YUM!!! Get this and you will not be disappointed! It is stuffed with an orange-mascarpone filling and topped with fresh berries and is just soooo freaking delicious. Everybody at the table tried of bite of it, and we all loved it. I would definitely come back just to order this!

Cafe Lachnie would get extra stars from me if I could assign them, but since I can't I will instead leave a review to help you decide on your next meal. The location is in a quaint shopping center, parking is limited in front of the establishment, so get there early if you want to get a slot. When you enter into the establishment, you are immediately greeted by the staff with a smile and a hearty "Good Morning" which is a positive. We visited this place twice in one week, which gives me a better sense of what offerings that they have on the menu and also allows me an opportunity to see if the wait staff are consistent. On my first visit I ordered coffee with cream served on the side. The coffee was excellent and we came to find out that it was locally roasted by a place called Morning View Coffee House & Roaster. It was a nice touch to have the individual pitcher of cream to go along with your cup of not so average Joe. The main consisted of the Eggs Benedict with Crabcake served on Brioche accompanied by the Breakfast Fingerling Potatoes with Sauteed Onions along with a side of Applewood Smoked Bacon. The crabcake was all crab with little if any sign of filler other than the amount needed to bind it all together. The poached egg was prepared perfectly and came with just the correct amount of hollandaise sauce so as not to be swimming in it. The best surprise was the breakfast fingerling potatoes which beats out the traditional potato hash that would come from every other greasy spoon cafe out there. The entire dish had the correct amount of seasonings and was very well balanced. I appreciate the fact that the chef paid close attention to the plating of the dish as it is a feast for the eyes and my belly. The second breakfast visit consisted of the Chive Biscuit and Sausage Gravy with a side of Applewood Smoked Bacon. The bacon on both occasions came out perfectly crisp and not over done. The chive biscuit really sets this biscuit and gravy combination head and shoulders above all others I have tried.The biscuits were light and fluffy, with the chives adding a nice complementary flavor to the sausage gravy. The portion size of this dish is very generous so bring your appetite if you expect to finish it off. I saved the best for last. The wait staff were very sweet and helpful; we were waited on by Johanna Lachine on our first visit. I am always a fan of businesses where you have visibility to the owner. The others who had helped along the way were also very quick to make sure our coffee or water was topped up and that the food came out as expected. Customer service, especially in the food service industry is a dying art for some places, but definitely not in this place. Parting thoughts: If you want a change of pace and are looking to get a nice start for you morning before hitting the beaches of the OBX, make your way to Cafe Lachine, you won't be disappointed.

The shrimp and grits lived up to what I had read previously. Flavorful with bits of ham and large chunck grits. Even the side potatoes (with purple ones thrown in for good messure) were tasty. Service was very attentive!! Good breakfast experience!!

OMG! Eat breakfast here. Decadent french toast with brioche bread. Eggs Benedict was also wonderful. Staff very friendly and fun because they know that once you eat here you will be back.

Upon arriving as a solo diner I had to wait for a few minutes without acknowledgment but in time I was greeted and given a table. My waitress was very sweet and friendly though, so I forgive them for my initial experience. I ordered a latte and biscuits and gravy. The biscuits and gravy consists of four huge biscuits and a choice of side. I chose grits but in retrospect I wouldn't order this combination again as it was too rich. Fruit would have been a better choice. In any case, both the grits and the biscuits and gravy were delicious but I couldn't eat much of either until I felt stuffed. I'm looking forward for to the leftovers! The cafe's ambience was perfect for a lazy Sunday morning. I would definitely return.

Amazing! Fantastic communication before, helped me plan menus for our 18-20 people and kept in touch until our trip. They did it all. We swam and enjoyed our family time while they cooked. They served us and cleaned it all up. The food was delicious...just what we wanted to eat when we came to the beach! We scheduled 2 meals with them and would absolutely use them again!

This is a delicious cafe! I ordered the crabcake sandwich on the herby bread with sweet potato fries and was not let down. Like other reviewers have stated, the crab cake contains a lot of meat and barely if any fillers. My boyfriend ordered the Reuben with french fries and loved it. The employees are all very friendly and attentive. The atmosphere is nice with a lot of cool blues all over. We'll definitely be back with our next visit to OBX! This was well worth the drive from Corolla!

I came back to write ANOTHER review because this place is still my favorite in outer banks. Other restaurants have breakfast waits out the door but this place is quiet with fabulous food and amazing service. The cheesy grits are to die for, the ham on the eggs Benedict is outstanding and the eggs cooked perfectly... On top of all that, the owner took the time to write down recommendations for other places we foodies should try in the area. I could go on all day. Seriously, come here!

Very good shrimp and grits... My wife had the crab cake, ham, egg, and cheese sandwich. They were out of brioche bread, so my sister had her French toast (with Mascarpone cheese) made with white bread - she thought it was awesome. My mom thought the gravy on the biscuits was too rich, so dad happily obliged finishing it. It's rare Thor me to award a five. I think they hit the bar.

We really loved this little spot on the Outer Banks! Really great staff and very accommodating to food allergies, gluten intolerance, etc. we grabbed to go and had a beach picnic. Portions were large; I got a chicken sandwich that was good but I would probably try something different next time. My husband got a chicken biscuit that he said was really great. The key lime pie tartlet he got (not GF ) was the star with an Italian style meringue that was basically pure marshmallow heaven. I got the famous ho-ho roll (GF!!) and while it really was super good it was lacking a little fudginess for me; the filling took over. However, we called and they said they could work with me me and make the key lime tartlet GF with enough notice; we were heading back home the next day but that's soooooo happening next time we're back in the spring.

So great!! We had the Eggs Benedict (w/ Black Forest ham) and the NC Shrimp & Grits! Both were hearty meals (great alternatives to super sweet breakfasts). The shrimp and grits were out of this world. It's great to come and get local shrimp in our meal Coffee hit the spot, too! The whole experience is highly recommended. read more

Great little place to have breakfast. The staff was friendly and the paintings on the wall were nice to look at of local artist. The stuffed French toast was awesome and a good portion to share with a half order of sausage biscuits and gravy. read more

EXCELLENT FOOD! I was only in the area for the week and we went out shopping and got lunch at this Cafe. I got a chicken sandwich with the crab soup and it was by far one of the best meals I have ever had in my life. Every thing was delicious, the staff was courteous and the whole experience was wonderful. I highly recommend anyone eating here if you're in the area. 5 stars for sure. Side note- I actually downloaded yelp just to leave a review for this Cafe. That's how good it was. :) read more

Stopped in for breakfast before heading back to VA. It took a while to get our food because one of the cooks didn't show up, but due to the wait the owners decided not to charge us. Very classy move. The other tables there got free meals as well. And the food and coffee were great! Extremely friendly staff. Thanks for the meal!! read more

My fave lunch place in Nags Head! Fresh and healthy sandwiches and salads, desserts are handmade and delicious. Friendly wait staff - was even able to change our takeout lunch order after we settled in with a Red Stripe at the front window/bar and watched a "better" sandwich go by to outdoor seating (a few tables). Good vegetarian options - this time I had the veggie wrap. Hubby had the buffalo chicken sandwich. Came here twice last summer with friends and sampled amazing desserts... today we splurged on the whole Ho-Ho cake to bring back for the family. Hope to try breakfast soon! read more

Amazing food and excellent service set this place apart. It's a very simple setup with a simple menu but everything is done very well. My wife and I stopped in for a meal and we were both very pleased with the coffee quality, meal choices, and I had a lemon tart that was simply exquisite. Be sure to stop in if you find yourself at the outer banks. read more

I loved this place when it was in Nags Head. I used to make sure to stop every year during vacation. Made the drive over to Wanchese today to their new location but they were closed. It didn't say that on their website, only on their door. Would've been helpful to have that posted before driving over. read more

I visited Cafe Lachine on our last trip to OBX because I wanted to get some macarons and an acquaintance said they sold them there. Upon arriving, we had a long wait; the place was not busy but the staff was painfully slow. I ordered the macarons which I pronounced 'macaroons' and the employee promptly/rudely corrected my pronunciation and was very condescending when she proceeded to "explain" it to me like I was a child which was unnecessary and embarrassing. Dana, herself, of Dana's Bakery in NYC which is famous for their macarons, even pronounces it 'macaroons' since she said she is American and not French. It's more like a tomato-tomahto thing. I was very insulted by this employee's pompous behavior and will never return, especially since the macarons were subpar at best. Be nicer to your customers. You should be ashamed. read more

I relied on Yelp to try this restaurant while at Nags Head for our first time. Excellent choice! We had the breakfast. Husband had the Black Forest ham eggs Benedict and I the crab cakes. He said the ham was the best he's eaten. The crab cakes were practically pure crab. If there was a binder I didn't see it or taste it. A definite must try if you like crab. The eggs were poached perfectly and the hollandaise sauce was creamy and perfectly flavored. Oh and the fried potatoes were awesome. They use something like fingerling potatoes, purple included. They were very moist and tender with a slight crunch on the outside. Now for the service we were greeted with smiles and welcomes. That always means a lot to me. Our waitress Casey was a sweetheart. She made sure all of needs were meet and seemed genuinely happy to be serving us. She kept checking on us too. We highly recommend giving this quaint little restaurant a try. I promise you will not be disappointed! read more

I was looking for a place to get a unique breakfast and I found this little gem! I order an iced coffee which was perfect and they had several different syrups to choose from to add in (even 3 different sugar free ones for a diabetic like me) I decided on the Eggs Benedict with the crab cake substitute instead of ham. The fresh made brioche was light and fluffy and the crab cake was flaky and made to perfection. The egg was poached with a runny yolk and the hollandaise sauce was fresh and lemony. It also came with a side of breakfast potatoes that were tender and delicious. I will be back again to try the stuffed French toast and the homemade chive biscuits and gravy! read more

My mom and I decided to come here for breakfast on a Friday and we were not disappointed. I had the eggs Benedict with a fried green tomato and it was delicious. The hollandaise sauce was delicious - light, buttery, a little lemony... My mom had a traditional breakfast plate and the biscuit was great. We also splurged on a couple of mini cupcakes which were also really moist and tasty. read more

Hidden gem in South Nagshead! Don't let the humble storefront fool you! Chef Justin Lachine and his wife Johanna are turning out amazing food--Go for breakfast, lunch or dinner! Try the orange mascarpone stuffed french toast, any of the great sandwiches and definitely try here for dinner. We had fried fish, braised short ribs, crab cakes( the best, no filler!!), poached pear salad, brined pork tenderloin, and coconut shrimp when our party of seven dined one Thursday night. Everything was served beautifully and ranked with some of the best restaurants we've tried. Don't forget dessert!! Last day in OBX and I am glad we chose this Cafe to send us off! It was my husbands best coffee the whole trip. I had biscuits and gravy and it was amazing! Loads of flavor. He had the eggs Benedict with ham and crab and loved it. Both meals are pictured. Small business so the bill came to around $30 but it was worth it. Give it a try! :-) read more

This place was within walking distance of where we were staying, and was recommended by a local, so it was a no-brainer that we stopped in for lunch one day. I had the Cuban press, which was amazing. A couple others had the pesto chicken, which they raved about the rest of the afternoon. Someone is our group was gluten free, and she enjoyed the gluten free bread so much she asked if she could buy a loaf. The décor is unpretentious, but everyone was super friendly. Will likely return next time we visit. read more

*This review is for catering services* Cafe Lachine came to me as a recommendation from my wedding planner. We wanted to keep it VERY casual in terms of food - buffet style, tacos (my favorite) and bbq (his). We were worried that we wouldn't be able to pull this off without hiring multiple caterers and/or breaking the bank. But Cafe Lachine was able to deliver exactly what we wanted and MORE! We visited their restaurant several months before the wedding for a tasting and were blown away by all the delicious food we had to choose from. Since both of us are big dessert fanatics, we opted for a smaller cake and Cafe Lachine put together a spread of hand-held desserts to go along with it. Everything was delicious but the GIANT HO-HO was really the highlight for me!! Johanna was on site the day of the wedding, and everyone from the folks preparing the food to the bartenders were so professional and courteous. We had so many compliments all the food and services all night long. I could not be happier with all they did and will definitely be visiting their restaurant when we return to the OBX! :) read more

As full time OBX residents for the past three years, my wife and I have eaten breakfast and lunch at Cafe Lachine many times. During this time we also come to know chef-owners Justin and Johanna Lachine, both outstanding chefs. With friends, we were among the patrons May 4 when Cafe Lachine began serving dinner using locally sourced ingredients and classic technique. My wife and dinner companions were all delighted with the chilled lobster accompanied with a frisee salad, orange supreme, crème fraise, and caviar for their first course. I had perfectly seared scallops on cauliflower puree, herb gnocchi, dressed with truffle oil. All were delicious and beautifully presented. For our main courses, my wife had coq au vin, accompanied by tri-color fingerling potatoes, and Swiss chard. Like one of our friends, I had the Border lamb prepared two ways: pistachio crusted loin and braised shoulder--both perfectly done--accompanied with potato-turnip rosti. Outstanding! Coincidentally, my wife and I had just returned from a trip to Paris. Our dinners at Cafe Lachine were equally as wonderful as any the meals we had in restaurants and bistros there. Because my wife has to eat gluten free, the Lachines are always willing to adjust their offerings at any meal to accommodate her needs. Their dinner menu also affords entree choices for vegetarians. In all, it was a lovely, leisurely evening of dining. Because of its intimate size, I recommend making reservations. read more

Great breakfast stop. Great food and good service. We ordered the eggs benedict with the fried green tomatoes. Delicious!!! The hollandaise sauce was excellent. The eggs were cooked perfectly and the brioche roll that was underneath was crisp and buttery. The breakfast potatoes were also delicious. Worth the stop if you are staying in the area. read more

Bleh, nothing great at all. I had the crab cake breakfast sandwich which was ok ... nothing great. I normally don't review things but I felt that I needed to because this restaurant had really great reviews and I wanted to check it out. My wife had the eggs Benedict with ham which looked good but did not have much taste. We both were serve the breakfast potatoes and there were hardly any served with our food! The service was great though the people are super friendly I would definitely recommend another place for brunch. read more

Solid breakfast in Nags Head. We haven't been to other places so I'm not sure how it compares to other local options. The crab cakes were pretty good. The ambiance was not great. Not bad, but just not welcoming or exciting. read more

Friendly service, great food, very accommodating. I'm gluten free and dairy free and had a hard time while I was on vacation. I had a delicious almond milk latte and an amazing BLT on gluten free bread. I'm glad I read a review that the location is in a strip-mall and to not let it deter me. We decided to head out for a little breakfast. It's a small space that is also a bakery, catering business and as well as brunch/lunch spot. The appeal to my seafood lover of a son was the crab cake breakfast sandwich. Scrambled eggs, ham, crab cake and your choice of cheese and bread. He chose the brioche bun and was happy he did. Needless to say, he devoured it all. Daily brunch specials included shrimp and grits, stuffed French toast and eggs Benedict with Black Forest ham or crab cake. I had the eggs Benedict with ham and it was delicious. Many patrons were enjoying the shrimp and grits while we were there. Breakfast sandwiches were available as well with your choice of bread, cheese and meat. My hubby had one on white toast with bacon. The white bread was thick and homemade. Not your puny fast food kind of breakfast sandwich at all and only $4. Local artwork was hanging on the wall for a nice local flair. In the ladies room they had the cutest statue of a French maid....this is a must see, I wish I had my camera with me for a photo. Worth a trip to this place for a sandwich or a pastry and coffee at a reasonable price. read more

A quick review ; first I want to mention that our waiter (Mat) was excellent . My wife ordered the Cider Brined Pork Tenderloin and I had the Seafood Risotto. The pork tenderloin was cooked perfectly it was prepared with a side if mashed sweet potatoes , very delicious perfectly done. The Seafood risotto was prepared with crab, shrimp and the fish of the day , Tilefish. I've never had Tilefish , it was perfectly cooked , delicious ! The restaurant itself is quite small I think maybe 6 tables. Definitely if you have a chance try it out. read more

My boyfriend and I went to Cafe Lachine on our way out of town. It was a cool place with an artsy vibe. We were seated quickly given it was about 12:30pm on a Thursday afternoon right at lunch hour. My boyfriend and I decided to do their lunchbox special. There was some confusion when we were ordering about what we could and could not substitute. There was a side of the day rather than being able to choose a side, and could substitute a side for the soup, but only certain sides. Our waitress came back a few times to inform us of changes to our order. We just kind of went with the flow. There was a big party that walked in before us so we knew it might be a while for our food to come out which was understandable. After waiting about 20min, another waitress came by to fill our water bottle on the table. She returned about 15 min later with the bottle refilled and sat it on our table. By this time, we probably knew they were short staffed or just busy because we never had our waitress or another waitress stop by until after our food was served around 1:30. When we received our food, the other waitress was kind enough to acknowledge that we had been waiting a while and informed us that they had messed up our order in the back kitchen. She was apologetic and gave us half price off of our lunch due to our wait which was nice. The food overall was good, but average. We had the chicken salad on brioche with fruit, chips, and a orzo pesto salad. Overall, had higher hopes based on yelp reviews, but it was still a positive experience. read more

Perfect brunch! We found this place by chance on Yelp, searching for a special, yummy-heathy birthday brunch. The food and service was the best I've had in a long time. The server was sweet and enthusiastic. I ordered the Benedict with side salad with the Green Goddess dressing, heavenly good! It wasn't easy to find because the GPS location was vague. But we found it and it was worth finding! read more

Owner Johanna Lachine fell in love with the Outer Banks after moving there in 2009. A professionally trained chef from Johnson & Wales, Johanna had long dreamed of opening a small café and catering company. In 2012, that dream became a reality with the launch of Café Lachine.

Fixings were all jarred from grocery store. Pretty sure he bought everything in a grocery store and put it in foil tins, but charged catering prices. We recently had a private dinner catered for our family while on vacation in Nags Head. Scheduling and planning the event was incredibly easy and Sara was wonderful to work with. On the day of, Johanna and Kelly were amazing. The food was top-notch, they set up everything and our kitchen was spotless when they left. But what was probably the most clutch move ever was when they took turns holding our babies so that the grown-ups could finish their courses. The overall experience of having a private dinner is something I would highly recommend especially if you have a large family and lots of young children. We used johanna's private chef services tonight. There are no words to describe how amazing this service is. Kelly and Michael came to our house, cooked, served food as well as drinks, and cleaned up. They were personable and even loved our dog which is always a bonus! The food was absolutely incredible. They catered to our different allergies and food preferences. We highly suggest them for any events, you will not be disappointed!
