If I was a dog, I would totally want to come here for a pet spa day! This is the 2nd time my Goldendoodle has come for grooming and a haircut and John Andrews did an awesome job again! This small shop is located on an indiscrete road off W. Alabama near Buffalo Speedway. There is a tiny parking lot out front that is usually empty. Upon entering the store it's a bit dim, emitting a calm spa feel. Being October, they were selling Halloween costumes in the store but they also have other pet items for purchase year round like fancy dog collars & leashes, clothes, dog beds, and toys. A bit pricey but good quality (not like the 99 cent toys I buy at Pet Smart that my dogs tear up in 10 minutes). I made sure to make an appointment for my dog grooming in advance but the other time I came they accommodated me and I was able to make an appointment the day before. Total grooming time, which included a bath and haircut, took about 5-6 hours. John and I set up a time of when I would pick up my dog but he is also open to calling you when the grooming is done as well. John took the time to listen to what I wanted my dog to look like and was very receptive to my instructions. He did a great job and I'm so happy my dog doesn't look like a poodle (which is a common goldendoodle grooming problem) and was not shaved down (which has both happened in the past to me at other groomers). My dog came out soft, fluffy, and quite honestly smelling better than I do after my morning showers. My dog got a cute complimentary bandana as well. The only star I would minus is due to pricing- this salon is a bit over my budget but my dog always comes back looking and smelling wonderful so I really shouldn't be complaining. We just moved here from out of state and my little guy desperately needed to get groomed. I called 4-5 places closer to me and was turned down immediately do to being fully booked or not taking new clients. When I called John Andrew's Pet Salon, they were able to schedule me that same day. They required proof of vaccination/shots upon drop off, which fortunately I was able to find. They informed me that I could also leave them my vet information to have them request a fax as well. I have a toy poodle and wanted him cleaned up for the summer time. They told me it would be 3-4 hours before he was ready and they were right on schedule when they called me later that day. I went in to get him and he looked great. His top knot was perfectly manicured and his pom-poms were all even. They had a bow on his ear, which I was not the biggest fan of, so right away they took it off with no problem. I was a little sticker shocked when they told me the price... $70 for a full groom, bath, and nails. My dog weighs 7lbs. so this was more than I was used to previously paying. He looked really good and appeared happy so I paid without hesitation. The reason for the 3, and not 4 star review, is that I didn't realize until later that night that my dog had been cut in two places on his underbelly. It's not uncommon for a tiny knick during a groom session for any dog, but I was upset that nothing was brought to my attention. My dog is used to being groomed every few weeks and its rare to see something like that on him. read more

Took my beautiful LONG HAIR golden retriever in and they SHAVED her!!! My instructions when I dropped her off were leave as much hair as possible, trim around feet and ears. My second golden that was there at the same time did not get shaved, but the groomer left stickers in her tail and don't trim her feet or ears. The receptionist said I won't charge you for the one. Seriously, a gross inexcusable error and they want to charge me!?!? A serious problem with communication from front to back office that needs to be fixed. There's a fine line between when your pet looks "cute fluffy" and "omg why is the shag carpet moving?!" We had definitely reached the latter and with plans for a pet sitter coming up, the situation needed to be taken care of asap. I called John Andrews in the morning and they said they could take her so an extra star for accommodating us last minute! They are conveniently located for me and although the salon is a bit hidden, it's not hard to find with a gps. I walked in and stood around looking like an idiot, then went back outside, rang the doorbell, went back in, and voila! - service. The woman was super nice and took the time to listen to the cut I wanted. After calling to confirm she was ready, I went to pick her up at the appointed time and she looked adorable. The cut is great! It's exactly what I wanted and I didn't see any cuts or scratches on her. As the only negative, I was VERY surprised when my total came to $86! I had no idea it would be so much! (I guess this is partially my fault for not asking upfront - I just assumed they would be somewhat in-line with other places.) After looking on their website, it says small dogs $60-65 so I'm not sure if I was charged a last minute fee or what. Definitely ask how much it's going to be before you leave your dog! Based on price, I probably will not bring my dog back, but the fact that they were able to squeeze me in and did such a great job on the cut earns them 4 stars for this particular experience. read more

Amazing experience. This was a last minute appointment I made after our normal groomer couldn't fit us in, and wow, found a keeper! We felt so comfortable with the the staff and could tell right away they knew what they were doing. They listened to us attentively and when we picked her up, she looked like a million bucks. We rescued Winter about a year ago, and it has been a struggle to find a groomer who can tailor to her sensitive skin and needs. I am so glad we found them!! read more

When I called they were able to get my dog in the same day. My Abby was nervous when she got there but John held her and loved on her and by the time I had the paperwork filled out, she was giving him a kiss. He was very friendly at drop off. The facility looked nice. Abby hair was decently cut. She had on a black sparkly bandana. No need for such sparkles. Plus the black scarf didn't even show up because she's a black dog. The employees are very friendly but I felt like my dog's grooming was pretty mediocre. His hair wasn't cut all over, his nails were clipped but not filed so very sharp, and it's much more expensive than other salons. I wouldn't recommend it. read more

It's great that Mr. Andrews does celebrity dogs, but I would never take my dog to this place again. The groomer burned his anus and cut his anus, but she didn't tell me when I picked him up. I found out when over the next few days I saw blood in his stool, and then saw he was bleeding from behind. Poor dog! This led to a trip to the vet and a bill for pills and salve (reimbursed by Mr. Andrews). Accidents can happen but the grooming was poor as well. Ears were not plucked, glands were not expressed, and overall the cut was not done well by any standard. My dog also got sick after this experience, and when I told Mr. Andrews about it... get this... HE TOLD ME OFF! All I can say is, NEVER AGAIN! read more

I was a nervous wreck about boarding our 10 month old Maltiepoo. Other than barking at strangers or at cars parked near our home, she is a calm, mellow puppy who has us at her beck and call. On the glowing recommendations of two neighbors we (I) reluctantly but necessarily arranged for Maxxie to spend four nights as a guest of John Andrews and to have a shampoo before coming back to my loving arms. She is home, happy, and even had her mustache and beard trimmed as an added bonus. We've already made reservations for Maxxie to return there for our already booked December trip. One of the hidden secrets of the people in River Oaks, John Andrews is the best place to have your dog looking perfect. They do a wonderful job with hair cuts and washing and are experts at what they do. As mentioned before they are a bit expensive but are very worth the money. read more

I took my 10 year old Labradoodle to John Andrews Pet Salon. I did this as a 'test' before taking my puppy labradoodle. Well, they FAILED miserably. My sweet dog looks like she was prepped for surgery; but even then, she is 'sheared' (not trimmed) unevenly. I even gave them a photo of how she looked a few years ago and told them to match that cut as closely as possible. I was shocked when I came to pick her up; she looked like a sheared sheep. I told them that I was stunned and would not pay for the grooming. They understood and offered 'free baths until her hair grew out'. Can you imagine why I would ever want to go back there again, even for free baths?? Apparently John Andrews is out of town. He'll probably never hear about this fiasco. read more

My dog Niblet loves John Andrews! He does wail a little bit about going but once we drive into the parking lot he can't wait to get out of the car and go in! He always looks so clean and fluffy and nicely trimmed and I feel like the wonderful John and his staff treat him as if he were their own! They are all dog lovers and people persons too! I trust them. They always greet Niblet and I with a sweet smile and kind words. They are professional and courteous and take the time to find out how I want my dog trimmed, etc. and / or offer advice.
