This was a bit of a surprise we discovered when scouting for places to visit near Lake Placid. This visitor center is neat and clean. The guide was informative but almost stoic, delivering a relatively straightforward narrative about the homestead and grounds. Definitely a place for reflection and contemplation, especially considering the political turmoil our country continues to endure.

Stopped by here for a quick visit while I was in town on September 15th. A great place to learn about one of the darkest chapters in American history. The site is easy to walk through with everything nearby. I wish I'd been in town for one of the events, but as a historian it was cool to see this site with a powerful connection to a pivotal time in U.S. history.

We'd been to Lake Placid many times before we finally took the time to check out John Brown's Farm and boy, were we happy we did! The two times we visited, it did not appear to be open, so we weren't able to take the tour or enter the barn, however we enjoyed our visits nonetheless. It's a beautiful property just off the main drag as you drive into Lake Placid. Open fields, views of the ski jumps, and beautiful flowers in the summer months. It's also quite the hot spot for wedding/engagement/family photos, and after a few minutes, you'll see why! We reviewed the map provided which outlined the various buildings on the property and also read some of the history of John Brown on the informational boards posted. There are a few statues and buildings you can explore and then be on your way. It would also be a great spot for a picnic lunch, as there as some picnic tables in the rear and fantastic scenery with the small pond and rolling fields. We also checked out the trails behind the farm, where we were told dogs could run off leash and found the trails to be well-maintained, clearly marked, and shaded. Beautiful flowers lined the path as well. Our pup can't wait for his next visit here!

About 3 miles of family friendly trails. Highly recommended for the history.

You'll enjoy the 'tour' if open and love the easy walk along the wooded path. Kids 5 and up can do this beautiful walk even if the farm is closed the day you arrive.

Very accommodating and friendly. Central location. Great boats and equipment. Easy online…read morereservations. They opened just for me on Mother's Day as I went a bit off-season and it was still chilly. AND I was late. Even then, they were still welcoming and kind. From now on, I won't rent a kayak anywhere else!

We stayed at the High Peaks resort right next door, and their boats weren't out for the season yet - Mirror Lake Boat Rental to the rescue! NOTE: if you are planning to go soon (this review is being written on 4/27/21) this boat rental shop will be VERY DIFFICULT to find. You need to look for the sign I have in my photos that tells you to text the number provided, then follow the dirt path behind the construction to the little desk that will give you instructions. This shop technically does have open hours, but we had to text the owner Greg upon arrival and then waited for him to come down and rent us a boat. In the future, I would recommend just texting before heading down there and meeting him when he's already there. Check out their website for full details of cost and times and such. $30/hour for most of your standard boats, including the fun bikes! We opted for a paddle boat so we could save money and be out on the water together. The hour flew by even though it was a little chilly when the wind blew. Cash only, which is inconvenient but understandable considering this biz is fully outside, and there's an ATM at the resort across the street if you need it. This is a great way to see Mirror Lake from a new vantage point and is TONS of fun. Happy boating!

Terrible. Do not rent a boat from this place. The boats are junk and the owners are very shady…read more I reserved a pontoon boat for two days and I was specifically assured that I would not be expected to take the boat out or pay in the event of rain. Day 1 was okay weather-wise, however the boat itself was dirty, all of the seats were ripped and the carpet became soaked through from the underside. I brought it back in because there was something clearly wrong with the way the motor was sputtering but I was told it sounded normal. Day 2 it rained all day and when I called to discuss this with someone, I was told then owners would need to call me back. I called back 3 more times throughout the day and never heard back from the owners, and of course they charged me full price for the rainy day. I eventually got my money back after going through a dispute process with my cc company. It was clear that the employee that helped me was frustrated and knew he worked for shady owners. I know there are not a lot of options on Lake Placid, but do yourself a favor and find a boat somewhere else. If it were possible to give zero stars, I would.

Plenty of shallow space for small non-swimmers, and plenty of deeper areas for skilled swimmers. Two jumping platforms, a dock, etc. The lifeguards were attentive. Covered in a thick blanket of snow, the surface of the frozen water indistinct from the shoreline itself. It acts as a wonderful launching point for all the things Mirror Lake has to offer in this season. Easily walkable from Main Street and nearby street parking, the beach area is nestled near to the toboggan shoot. Benches are a welcome convenience, especially when you have ice skates in tow. I brought a backpack to carry my boots in case I wanted to prematurely exit the ice before looping back to the beach itself but most folks left them near to this seating without issue. The frozen waters just off shore host a couple small areas for ice hockey and an entrance point to the lengthy pathway visitors may use to walk the perimeter of the icy surface. Beautiful views of the church as well as the expanse of the lake. A place you can sit, watch, and enjoy the scenery... or join in yourself!
