Massage is such a personalized art that it's difficult to say (beyond objective training, knowledge, and breadth of technique, of course) whether one therapist is 'better' than another. We all prefer different approaches, techniques, amounts of pressure, areas of focus, even atmosphere. But Kevin is a perfect match for all my preferences. I appreciate his extensive knowledge of muscle groups and connections, and that he talks me through what he's targeting as he targets it (I'm sure if I asked for quiet he'd be fine with that too, but I like having a side of education with my massages). He is very collaborative with his approach and asks for feedback and what's working and what isn't, what will be better to focus more or less on next time. This means every subsequent massage will be better and more tailored to what I need. And all the cerebral stuff aside - his massages just FEEL GOOD. Sometimes things are good-on-the-edge-of-painful, but that's how I like it - that's when it feels like it's working. He targets all of the knots I develop with my chronically messed up spine, some I'm aware of, most I'm not. But when he gets to them and I feel things releasing, I know they were in there. He also never does that thing some therapists do where they think they're working out a knot but are just pressing painfully on a bone over and over. It's hard to describe how good a massage can be in words, but I think you get the picture. You should absolutely give Kevin a try, especially if you're having trouble finding a therapist you really like.

He's really good at finding the knots and working them out. He can also identify some of your problem areas and suggest stretches you can do at home to make those muscles feel and work better (but isn't preachy or pushy about it). He's friendly, pleasant, and doesn't try to chitchat with you during your massage like some therapists I've been to. (Maybe he will if you want to; I like to be quiet during massages, so he doesn't talk to me except to occasionally ask how the pressure is.) Kevin works out of a chiropractic/wellness office and the facility is relaxing, comfortable, super-clean, and cozy. It's a little tricky to find the first time, but it's convenient to many parts of Durham and there's plenty of parking right in front of the door. His table is comfortable and the lotion he uses is very nice--not greasy or overly fragrant like I've had at some massage therapists in the past, where you hate to put your clothes back on at the end because you wonder if you'll ever get the oil out of them. I really feel like you get a better-than-spa quality massage for MUCH lower-than-spa prices with Kevin. I highly recommend him.

Beware of this guy, if I could give 0 stars, I would. First off, his 5 stars on Google is…read moredeceiving. He deletes any semi-negative reviews and blocks the users so they can't post another review. So onto my experience. John is so unbelievably unprofessional. I made an appointment for early morning, for my birthday, and arrived within 5 minutes of appointment time. I texted asking how to find his suite in the building. There are no signs anywhere. Called him, no response. So we eventually figure it out, it's about 11 minutes past appointment time. He still hasn't returned the call. Knock on the door to the "room", that first off isn't even relaxing looking inside, he comes out, leaving a person on the table. He starts making a bunch of excuses. "I texted you the address this morning and you didn't reply" - "yes but the appointment was already confirmed prior". To which he is showed the text so then he agrees, "sorry you are correct it was confirmed. You can come back tomorrow morning". No offer of discount for my wasted time and gas, no nothing, I decline because after all this was for my birthday. Since that didn't work, he starts with "well she showed up and I said hi and her name was kind of similar to yours" - "so you realized it wasn't me though, and since I wasn't here at the exact time, you took someone else in my place and now you're telling me to wait until this evening for my appointment?" Then again another excuse "well it's now 14 minutes past appointment time" - "yes I was HERE within 5 minutes of the appointment but YOU didn't answer calls or texts" - so then he is like "ahh yes I see that now.....but I was in session already, she didn't confirm her appointment and just walked in". So then I proceed with "so you took a walk in, during my CONFIRMED appointment time, within less than 5 minutes of the start time?" Then he makes more excuses "well again you have similar names" - "right, similar but not the same, you just said she didn't have an appointment and you knew that, so you clearly didn't mistake us". It was like 5 more minutes of him making the same excuses over and over again, and I couldn't possibly get into a relaxed enough state ever get a message from a person who is so unable to be accountable for their mistakes. So I certainly wouldn't be wasting my gas to come back here tomorrow morning. Honestly, this is the most unprofessional behavior I've dealt with in a long while, and while he totally ruined the morning of my birthday, that room is less than desirable and the atmosphere is anything but relaxing. If you want quality, look somewhere other than this guy, someone who works in an actual massage studio and not someone who brings people into a "massage" room that otherwise feels it's slapped into the middle of an office building. Don't risk ruining a special day, find someone else.
