In the best way possible, this is a dash of yesteryear, from the attentive focus of the staff to the manufacture quality, the materials, and careful fashion details of the products. There's a luxury to fine woolens, detailed herringbone of tweed, ascots, hats as class markings, and all the accouterment. In a word of short Internet attention spans, I'd offer the description "The Great Gatsby meets The Kingsmen, and they go shopping."

I grew up in Los Angeles, where Philip Marlow, Raymond Chandler's famous detective, pounded the hot tinsel-town pavement with his fedora and snub-nose 38. By the 50s nobody in L.A. wore a hat except my Grandfather - he was also the last man in Dallas Texas to stop wearing a six-shooter into town. I don't recollect any local haberdashers in L.A. - sunglasses, and flip-flops, but not haberdashers. I've always liked the way men dressed in the 30s and 40s - especially the hats. In Portland, you need a hat, so I drop into John Helmer's and inevitably work my way over to the Italian fedoras. Okay, maybe Marlow wouldn't wear an Italian fedora, but Eddie Mars would, and I would too. John Helmer has an incredible selection of hats, and I slowly work my way through them, trying them on, peeking at the price, and inching my way toward the Italian hats. I peek at the price.... Sure, I'd wear it, but I'm a working stiff and I can't afford an Italian fedora, so I'll just wear this Stetson fur felt job, and drop in every now and then and visit the Italians. What the heck, It's an excuse to visit my local haberdasher.

Very good quality, better-made hats. Top brands from Europe. You won't find any baseball caps here!

No joke, one day I had a business lunch down the street and was looking for parking and found a spot right outside Flipside. I stopped in and fell even more in love. Kori was awesome and so kind. The proprietor, Dayna Pinkham, is lovely and was happy to let us try on pieces that struck our fancy, and even recommended a lovely wool felt hat that really flattered my face shape. Sadly, being out of a job meant that I wasn't able to purchase it (this sort of quality doesn't come cheap, but is still much more affordable than milliners in LA) but she wrote down the style, size, and various options so I can phone order a custom one when I'm ready to purchase.

I came across Penman Hats while looking to replace a well-worn much beloved fedora that was unfortunately lost. Intrigued by the idea that all of the hats offered are made by hand, by the owner himself, and the fact that many well known folks wear his creations, I went ahead and ordered a whisky colored beaver felt with an iron colored vintage ribbon. Not long after, I received the package and when I opened it I was as pleased as I could possibly have been. Besides the hat itself being a work of art, every detail of the packaging was a delight. The hat came carefully wrapped in a plastic outer bag to protect it in transit. It had been placed in a very high quality hatbox with a gold embossed logo closed with a with silk cord. Inside the box were tags that could be filled out and kept in the hat in case it was lost (wish I had this for the one I was replacing), an enamel lapel pin that found it's way to my lucky backpack and of course the hat itself. The hat was flawless. It has a 5 point bash, and is carefully stitched all around. The interior is silk lined, and has a leather inner sweatband meticulously hand stitched on. Most importantly, the fit was exactly as measured. I highly recommend following the instructions that the company has online for finding your correct size; they don't use generic sizes like M-L-XL and the hats are all the better for it. If you're looking for a quality hat, made by a master hatter using old-world craftsmanship, you can't go wrong ordering one of these hats.

The buckle is nice just overpriced as I was able to order from Amazon for half the price. Cons: unable to return items. I went in to purchase as my order from a different store was coming in later than expected due to a delay with delivery. However, my item ended up coming despite the delayed delivery message I received. I went back to return the belt buckle I no longer needed only to be told that they don't do refunds. I looked at my receipt and there was nothing on the back or front that would indicate that. The guy did show Me the sign but it is hanging up behind the register area and you cant really see it from the register unless you walk around as it is hanging on a wall that is not directly in front of the register. Seems a little sinister to not have the sign posted directly by the register to ensure a person is knowledgable about store policy. That said, I am not a fan of stores who refuse to accept their items back. Wont be coming back!
