I've been battling panic attacks, anxiety, and depression for a long time. I've tried medications prescribed by psychiatrists and doctors, but I didn't like the side effects or the fact that they lose effectiveness over time. I felt like there was an underlying issue that if only I could find a way to address it, I would feel a lot better. I did a lot of research and found that neurofeedback was a promising new treatment for mental health, so I did some research and found the top doctors in the Portland area who specialized in neurofeedback. The first two I went to were more targeted towards children, but when I went to see Dr. McManus, he was very much targeted towards adults, so I gave it a try. After 40 weeks of treatments, I can definitely say that it was worth it! Whenever I get a panic attack, it goes away almost instantly, like a reflex action in my brain. I haven't had a depression episode in months. My anxiety has also calmed down a lot. Dr. McManus is a great person to talk to and his methods really work. You can tell him what particular issues are bothering you, and he will adjust the therapy session to concentrate on those areas of the brain. He listens really well and is very empathetic. I will say that it takes many weeks before seeing results. I didn't see the true benefits until about 32 weeks into the 40-week program. Beware! After two appointments I left CHEATED out of my TIME and MONEY. The thing that gets me the most is... before I even set up an appointment, I specifically told him my symptoms, what I thought, family history and the direction I wanted to go. He then said he could help after meeting with me. He said he would have to do some testing first. So we set up an appointment and I came in and paid for testing. Unbenounced to me, he told me I would have to make a second appointment to review the results. NOTE, the testing was super basic and the results were probably immediate. Neither here nor there, I came back for a second time to review my results. After the review he said... He couldn't prescribe me anything to help because he wasn't a doctor that can prescribe medicine. This was confusing to me because I was so forthcoming before the appointment. He strung me along for two appointments, making me pay for his time, when he did NOTHING for me! In addition, on the second meeting... I got there 5 minutes before my appointment and there was a note saying he'd be back in 10 minutes. I sat around in his office waiting for at least 15 minutes. There was no secretary... it was weird. Dr McManus has helped me so much in working with anxiety and with symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis. He is a skilled teacher and counselor.
