I've had a floater in my left eye for past few weeks, and since it didn't go away as I liked, I decided to have it checked out. I couldn't look up doctor reviews on the Cigna website so I looked up Dr. Pilavas on Zocdoc. Making reservation was a breeze and Dr. Pilavas actually gave me a phone call to confirm my appointment. I went the week of 6/1, when the office is still closed for non-emergency visits. My condition didn't really call for urgent checkup, but I was lucky to have my appointment set right away. Once I was at the office, there was around an hour wait. However, the doctor was considerate and explained that he has been busy tending to other patients who needed immediate care. Dr. Pilavas was friendly and gently explained to me what's going on with my eye. It turns out the condition is nothing to worry about and I am glad that I visited Dr. Pilavas. With my Cigna open access insurance I had to pay $45 for the copay. It was quite a pleasant experience so I'd recommend Dr. Pilavas for anyone looking for eye care. read more

Out of the blue, I had a bout of corneal abrasions and a very serious issue relating to prior damage. I found Dr Pilavas and decided to give him a shot. I live in Westchester and noticed he did Saturday appointments and was just a lot more available than other specialists. He also accepts a number of insurances that a lot of doctors near me didn't. I've mi He was very professional and really helped me get on a regimen that worked. He is very skilled. He looked at my eye and immediately located the issue and what needed to be done. Debridement seemed scary but he thoroughly numbed my eye and effectively did the short procedure. He reassured me during off hours and made himself available when work was keeping me from taking off. Dr Pilavas is an incredible doctor and surgeon. I was referred to him by Dr Norman Saffra because of his expertise with problems that relate to the cornea. We not only dealt with the original corneal problems but when I asked about corrective laser surgery he walked me through what the process would look like and saw me repeatedly over several months to make sure my eyes were ready for the procedure. My insurance switched in the middle and he even made an exception for that! I had dry eyes so he put me on a regimen of different drops in order to prep my eyes for the surgery. We did the PRK procedure which has a bit longer recovery time than lasik but less complications down the road. It was uncomfortable/painful for around 3 days and it has been fine ever since. My vision went from a prescription of about -7.00 to 20/20 vision in several weeks! I have never seen this clearly since I was a young child. I can now go swimming and do many activities which were more complicated when I could only wear glasses. Dr Pilavas was extremely patient throughout, called me several times after the procedure to make sure I was fine and returned all my calls when I had a question or concern. I am now 5 weeks post op and the only eye drops I'm taking are to deal with dryness which has also been progressively getting better in the past few weeks. In summary-- Highly recommended! My deepest gratitude to Dr Pilavas for being so attentive and caring throughout the many months so that everything goes smoothly. read more

Went because of some good reviews and made appt. Doctor seemed nice at first. But after asking some very simple questions because I was unclear about something, he became rude and even rolled his eyes (he thought I wasn't looking). I left the office feeling unheard, and without clear answers to my questions. I will say however that the office staff was amazing; super helpful and nice. But I will not go back. read more

Dr. Pilavas' care and concern for his patients' eye health is genuine, and I really appreciate his support in helping me understand and deal with my long-term eye treatment plan. They gave me an emergency appointment when I woke up with very bad eye pain. This is a father and son operation and I was very impressed with the Doctors. I had the son who realized I had a multi scratched cornea (after multi questions about my health and other prevalent info) and he put something in my eye that took the pain immediately away. The. He put some sort of type of temp contact with a special medicine and it was amazing. I went back a week later and he took it out. One week later, no pain and I can see again though the eye. I would recommend this practice to anyone, and I have many medical issues being a disabled vet and have more doctors I would trash than praise. read more

Doctor John Pilavas is an amazing doctor who i will always go for my vision care. Excellent performance and bedside service!!! My girlfriend got her 20/20 vision and had a painless recovery process for her lasik. Overall, he is truly a very cordial/caring doctor, thorough in examinations, and professional in all areas. I have 20/20 vision!! I had my lasik procedure done Dr. Pilavas, and it couldn't have gone any smoother. He was very thorough when examining my eyes for candidacy, and explained why each test was important, as well as the pre-surgery steps I could take at home. He also broke down the procedure step by step several times, including while it was being performed. You have to schedule a few follow up appointments to make sure you're healing well, which isn't as bad as it sounds because the office actually keeps appointment times! As nervous as I was, everything was so clear and thorough that it really left very little room for nervousness. Should have done it a LONG time ago!! Definitely the way to go!! read more

Dr. Pilavas is an incredibly professional, considerate, and thorough doctor. I visited him with an eye infection that was incredibly painful after visiting the ER the night before and being told that I was completely fine and it was paranoid about nothing, and Dr. Pilavas was totally a breath of fresh air. He did a thorough eye exam and was incredibly courteous and kind when I responded with intense sensitivity upon having the region below my eye palpated. He said that he was not entirely familiar with what he saw in my eye, but instead of guessing, as many doctors unfortunately do (but hide it!), he took it very seriously and immediately took a sample to be cultured for a variety of possible pathogens. He also did not make me wait until the culture results were returned to receive the medical treatment I needed: he prescribed me eye drops as well as a strong single dose of Azithromycin to take care of whatever bacteria was infecting my eye. The eye drops helped immensely and the dose of Azithromycin essentially knocked me out for half a day and left me feeling much better. In fact, my eye was mostly healed upon waking. Furthermore, as I presented with skin problems at my appointment along with the eye infection, Dr. Pilavas took special care to consider bacteria that would cause both eye and skin infections, all while paying close attention to my medical and travel history over the preceding year. It was truly refreshing to see a specialist who used their knowledge of a specific field in the context of their broader knowledge of the entire human body (as opposed to focusing only on their area of specialty). The medicine he prescribed me not only helped with my eye infection, but significantly improved my skin problem as well! The follow-up appointment was quick but thorough, and Dr. Pilavas was completely transparent regarding the labs he chose, the results of the culture, and the level of specificity and reliability of the results (e.g., I ended up having a staph infection, but he was sure to inform me that another infection could be a possible cause since the culture that yielded the staph result was a broad-spectrum screen for any detectable level of a variety of pathogens, rather than a detailed test targeting precise levels of a specific pathogen). I thought that this was especially professional and demonstrated his prioritization of my own personal awareness and understanding of my diagnostic status over his appearance as a doctor with "all the answers". He welcomed me to come back anytime if there were further issues with my eye, and kindly offered to recommend an internist or dermatologist to assist me with diagnosing my other symptoms. This further reflected his transparency and humility regarding the extent of his expertise. Finally, his staff are fantastic, lovely people who are easy to talk to yet highly professional. They are more than willing to make special accommodations for patients (such as myself) who might be in need of urgent care--e.g., they got me an appointment with an internist just a few days later when that doctor was otherwise booked for over a month! The wait time in his office is short, and scheduling appointments within the week has never been an issue. Wonderful practice overall, and relatively inexpensive without insurance for such a thorough appointment with a skilled specialist (approx. $150, due after the appt.). read more
