This is a MUST stay if you are looking for a comfortable, historic bed and breakfast in the heart of historic Charleston. We, sadly, only stayed one night - but what a great experience it was. First, the Rutledge is an impressive house from the street. The home of one of South Carolina's early governors, this place hosted presidents (George Washington) and other historical figures throughout its history. The home is updated but retains that old, original feel. We were greeted by a very friendly concierge in the lobby of the home and educated on the amenities, services and events of the Inn. Our room was in the Carriage House. It was large, up dated, large shower and VERY comfortable and firm bed. We brought our dog - who was welcomed by Inn for a small fee. Parking is also available at a convenient lot in the rear of the property. Safe and secure parking lot. The Inn offers afternoon tea at 4 pm and complimentary sherry, port and brandy from 6:30 to 11:00. We enjoyed afternoon tea after some exploring around town. Iced tea and lemonade as well as delicious treats including macaroons were served in the ballroom on second floor. We sat outside on the iron porch overlooking Broad Street. Views from the porch are wonderful. The following morning, we ordered our complimentary breakfast to be served to us on that same porch. We had Eggs Benedict, bacon, fruit, and a delicious biscuit with fruit. Spectacular. One of the best breakfasts I've had in a long time. Pots of coffee were also served with the meal. This is a very specialized boutique hotel for a specific type of traveler. This house has tremendous historic importance and it shows in the design, aesthetic and feel. This is a house over a century plus old. There is the cracks floors, old home smell and small intimacy. Is you like that, it is perfect. Location is exceptional right near Broad and King. Where you stay during a trip makes some of the biggest differences of any decision. Think about it - if you decide to stay at your friend's house and bunk on their couch, you are going to wake up exhausted, tense, and in pain. You are not going to wake up feeling rested, and it is going to negatively impact your whole trip. If however, you stay at a hotel or inn or b&b that takes care of you, pampers you, even, you are going to wake up feeling so much more rested and ready to take on the day. This is why I am thrilled we found the John Rutledge House Inn. Truth be told, we actually had reservations elsewhere before we found the John Rutledge. The other hotel called us a few days before we were supposed to arrive and told us that they were no longer able to accommodate us due to renovations that ran late. We scrambled and we're thrilled to find the John Rutledge, which is a National Landmark, and they were able to accommodate us the same day. I called and spoke with Margo, who was helpful, friendly, and even gave us their military discount, which was wonderful. When we arrived, the first impression was excellent. Margo was working the front desk, and she was just as lovely in person as she was over the phone. She walked us through every detail of our stay including parking, breakfasts, tea time, cocktail hour, and helped us manage our dinner reservations. We got a key to our room and parked the car which is on site but is an additional cost per day, and made our way to our room. We stayed in the left carriage house in room 14. This was on the second floor, facing away from the courtyard. The benefit to this room was that it was far away from everything going on in the main hotel, and was supposed to be very quiet. The downside of this room was that it was directly above two rooms with dogs in it. The dogs were loud, stinky, and negatively impacted our stay. Now granted, we are definitely dog people We have two dogs ourselves, but these dogs were so stinky and so loud, it made the entryway to our carriage house area smell and was covered in dog hair. Our room however was well appointed, and had a tempurpedic bed, which I hadn't slept on in a while. Our bed however left us feeling rested every night which was delightful. The downside to our room was the bathroom. Although it had beautiful marbling, and wonderful water pressure, and included safety railing, the shower area had black mold in some of the tile grout, which I thought was something that housekeeping easily could have fixed. Additionally, I felt like their Gilchrist and Soames body products were a little cheap feeling and stripped my skin. We both felt like they could have had a higher quality product by the same purveyor to reflect the quality of the hotel. They offer the English Spa line and I think the Royal or Spa Therapy line would be more appropriate and enjoyable. Included in our stay was a daily tea hour which included rotating appetizers. We went almost every day and took tea and appetizers on the balcony outside the ballroom and it was lovely. They also offer a nightcap / cocktail hour in the ballroom that includes Sherry, Port, Brandies and such which was a delightful option after dinner. Everyday, they also include breakfast, which you can take in your room, in the courtyard, or in the ballroom. We thoroughly enjoyed the Rutledge biscuit with cooked fruit as well as their extremely creamy and delicious grits. Everyday they also included a breakfast special such as stuffed French toast or eggs Benedict. The only downside to breakfast was that the gentleman who served breakfast, Maurice, wore a very strong and overpowering cologne, which lingered on the food long after he had left. On our last night, it was my husband's birthday, and the hotel took it upon themselves to deliver a personalized and hand signed note celebrating his birthday, with a bowl full of ice with a champagne bottle and flutes. I thought that this was exceptionally thoughtful and showed their attention to detail. Their attention to detail also was reflected in their recommendations to us to go to their sister hotel's restaurant, Circa 1886 as well as their recommendation to Earthlings Day Spa which is their preferred spa of the area. Overall, I'm glad that we found the John Rutledge as an alternative to where we were going to stay, because I believe we received a much higher quality experience than we could have gotten elsewhere. Additionally, you can't beat the location of the John Rutledge, walking distance to the battery and the beautiful housing district. I would definitely return to stay here after this experience, and I have already recommended it to many of my friends. Nothing but good things to say about the accommodations and service. Such a quaint historic inn that will add so much to your trip to historic Charleston. The room was comfy and clean and COVID friendly. The complimentary breakfast is 5 star. You can choose to have it served in room, in the ballroom, or in the courtyard. So depending on how much you are socially distancing yourself you can either stay a hermit or take a chance out in the open. I had a special request to use the kitchen freezer which they accommodated without hesitation. One of the innkeepers even included a cool photo of our room sustaining cannon fire damage way back when. Such a lovely historic touch to our stay. The cherry on top were the Gilchrist and Soames toiletries. Love! Would stay here again in a heartbeat. Oh and their complimentary teatime is a must. We were served chocolate/PB cookies, cucumber with cream cheese, and a seasoned hush puppy. I had two servings of each hors d'oeuvres. Let's leave it at that. read more

Date of visit: September 29, 2020 Have been to Charleston at least a half dozen times. We have either stayed at brand hotels or vrbo homes. This time we wanted to stay closer to downtown and at a historic Inn. Found John Rutledge on Yelp! It is a beautiful Inn! Love the historic charm, yet so clean and well taken care of for its age. We loved the amenities: breakfast, afternoon tea and brandy, sherry or port in the evening. We were upgraded to a suite without even asking. We had a beautiful room on the third floor. It was nice, but sheesh...lots of stairs to carry a lot of luggage and it was a hot Charleston September day! Very modern bathroom and a beautiful four poster king bed. The bed was both lovely and very comfortable. We took advantage of all the amenities. We decided to have breakfast brought to our room and we ate at the beautiful round table in front of the bed. Breakfast was to order (you place your order on a card and place on your door the night before). We chose lemonade and iced tea at tea time, with a pre plated covered dish of some small food. I'm becoming something of an expert of dog friendly hotels in Charleston. Have stayed at 3 now in the heart of downtown. This one ranks at the top along with the Autograph Collection Marriott. My husband liked this one better because of the delicious breakfast, and unlike another reviewer, he liked being in the carriage house with other dog owners, so you don't have to worry about dog barking bothering others. Margo at the front desk was vivacious and informative, and all the staff was great. Rooms were stately and well-appointed. This is not a budget stay, but with the breakfast, I think it is well worth it for a taste of old world Charleston. read more

Excellent B&B We stayed a week to attend Spoleto. The building is lovely and our room was very comfortable. Staff were all very pleasant and helpful. It's nice that they had a parking lot (for a fee) in hard-to-park Charleston. The location is excellent for walking around town. My only (small) complaint is that they need more breakfast staff. Quite often several tables were left filled with dirty dishes when we entered the dining area. Otherwise, we enjoyed our visit thoroughly. read more

This place will meet and exceed all your expectations. The price is worth it! Stop debating and just book this place. 1. Location- right in the heart of historic downtown within walking distance of the market the pier and all historical sites(you'll need an Uber to plantations but that's everywhere) 2. The staff- knowledgeable of the history of the town the building and did anything needed to make your stay work. Turn down service with chocolates? Crazy, right? 3. Happy Hour for free- yes, you heard that right. Walk up to Mr Rutledge's ballroom and there's tea and muffins, meat pies, etc waiting for you...after that? Have a brandy and sherry on the balcony overlooking the city...(not joking) you just pour it yourself 4. Free water- this seems like an odd one but it gets HUMID in MB and the staff and hotel has water in your room for you and a cooler outback for you...you will want this for your daily ventures 5. The rooms- historic but modern. Air conditioner is a little loud but you are sleeping in a 250 year old home so there's that...showers are nicer than any Hilton or radison ...tiled and roomy... 6. The homemade breakfast that's included. Again, you read that right...Frey squeezes orange juice with all food made to order with you filling out a request form the night before...want it in your room? In the ballroom? Courtyard? They deliver it where you want it... All and all a great place and I wouldn't stay anywhere else when visiting Charleston! read more

My wife and I are locals in Charleston and we love doing staycations, especially in downtown. We have also been to many international hotels, so we've seen the best and worst in the hospitality industry and this staycation at the John Rutledge Inn was by far THE most disappointing. We stayed there the first week of December 2019. So to start off, we booked two rooms, one for my wife, newborn son, our dog and myself and another room for my mother in law. Nowhere on the site did it give an option to choose which building one would be in, but only the room type. We were excited to stay in the historic inn but when we called to ask some questions, we found our that they had just randomly put us in the carriage house which is detached from the main house. And it wasn't even because they didn't have any rooms left in the main house. I requested to have the rooms changed to the main house and they did so right away which made me curious as to why we were put into the carriage house to begin with. Secondly, the inn was proud to say that they welcomed all pets and nowhere on the site did it say that there were any restrictions regarding pets. So when we checked in, we were told that pets are not allowed in the main house, only the detached carriage houses. So we were forced to switch which ruined the whole reason we wanted to stay there in the first place. The person checking us in said that he would have a manager contact us the next day about the our dissatisfaction of the process up to that point but no manager ever reached out. The next day my wife was taking her robe off the large metal hook on the back of the bathroom door and as she did, the hook flew off almost hitting her. I called the front desk and they asked if she was ok, but after that, they treated it as a maintenance issue only. The front desk told us that a manager would reach out but of course they did not. The very least they could do after my wife almost got hit in the face was to see if there was anything they could do, but no. They did come and fix the hook and they didn't do anything else to address that issue. For breakfast each day, each room fills out a menu as to what each person wants to eat. The filled out menu has to be put on the door nob by midnight and I realized that they had not given us a blank menu to fill out as they would have normally left a blank menu sometime in the middle of the day. But it was approaching midnight and no blank menu. So I called the front desk and was greeted by THE most unfriendly and annoyed voice on the other end. I explained how we had not received the blank menu. He then gave THE biggest annoyed and exasperated exhale I've ever heard anyone in the hospitality industry give. He then told me he would bring a menu but was tested like I was THE biggest annoyance. Well I'm sorry for asking you to do your job! We did get the menu a few minutes later. And when I turn in the keys when we checked out, the person just took the keys without saying anything but "Ok". Not, "thanks for staying with us", or "I hope you enjoyed your stay". There was NOTHING. Not everything at the inn was disappointing but a lot of it was. It is a direct reflection of the quality of the management and we do not recommend the John Rutledge House to anyone. It didn't live up to it's hype whatsoever. After getting so many accolades as the JRH has, sometimes you forget what it is you did to get there, and the John Rutledge House has lost it's way if they can treat their guests like that. Trust me, there are A LOT of orher inns and hotels in Charleston where you will be treated WAY better than you will be at the JRH with MUCH better service. We were recently treated WAY better at the two star rated Hampton Inn. Sometimes it's the little things that makes the biggest difference and the JRH does not do the little things that makes a difference for the customer's stay. If it was one or two things that went wrong, then fine, but when it's multiple things that go wrong, it's saying that something is wrong and it needs to be fixed. read more

My wife and I visited Charleston on our first vacation with our 9 month old daughter and chose this bed and breakfast. The staff could not have been more accommodating! The rooms are really beautiful, and you definately will get the feeling of being of feeling a little like royalty! We stayed here for our anniversary and the staff had given us a beautiful note w/ champagne to celebrate. The breakfast is so delicious and delivered straight to you room (or pretty much anywhere else you would want in the house) l! The egg souffle and shrimp and grits were delicious and the bread was still warn when served! This B&B is a very very short walking distance from all the great shopping (on King St) and market street where the open air market is. We stayed here last week on Thursday and Friday night. This was a last minute decision to visit Charleston so we didn't have much time looking into places to stay. We chose this Inn and glad we did. We wanted to stay in the main house so we were originally set up for room 9. There were plumbing issues so they moved us to 10. It was a very large room with a nice, clean bathroom. We were on the third floor and there is no elevator but we were forewarned and that was fine. I liked how we could choose where to eat breakfast. We chose our room. Breakfast came on time both mornings with friendly service from Marco. The coffee was really good. A+! I usually don't sleep well when I'm away from home and not in my bed but I slept really well here. I'm looking into getting the same mattress at home. Very comfortable! Although we enjoyed our stay here and really liked the location, I'm not sure if we would stay there again simply because there are so many other options to experience in Charlston. Such a neat town with so much to offer. I would certainly recommend this Inn. read more

The property is beautiful, the location great, breakfast yummy. BUT beware of housekeeping, on our first night we turned down our comforter to find a torn bottom sheet, blood stained sheets, pillow cases and mattress cover......gross! Also there was black mold in the shower! Upon checkout day we requested and allowed a 1pm check out, we returned to our room at 1:04pm to find our room being stripped and our personal belongings being taken from the room. The room at this tony Inn was $365 a night, we truly expected a greater sence of hygiene, attention to detail and elegant graciousness. We hope the Inn takes this seriously and works to improve their housekeeping staff and accountability. read more

My husband and I spent a few weeks investigating places to stay in Charleston and The John Rutledge House Inn was the fourth place we wanted. All the other places were booked. For being our fourth choice, boy did we luck out! As this was our first time to Charleston, we don't have anything to compare it to. We decided to upgrade to the junior suite and stayed in the Thomas Heyward Jr. room. A little costly, but quite lovely. The atmosphere is quaint and the location is great. They have an open parlor with a full balcony to sit and relax with a brandy. I think the most impressive part of the stay was the concierge. More specifically, Patrice. She was a doll. Answered all our questions, booked all our excursions, gave great recommendations, and was extremely helpful. Can't say enough about her. Breakfast was good, not anything to write about but I recommend eating it out on the courtyard they have in the back. They do have their own parking, they charge $12 a day for it. My brother was getting married and this was the venue the bride and groom chose so this is where I stayed. I was in the main house, on the third floor. As many have noted their is no elevator however it was not that big of a deal, maybe if I was 80. Breakfast was served every morning either in your room, ballroom, or the courtyard by one of the coolest cats on the block Maurice. Always friendly and polite and willing to get you anything you forgot to order the night before. Food was delicious albeit not that memorable. The rooms in the main house are very large and worth the hefty price tag they come with. The carriage house rooms are smaller but also more affordable. The afternoon tea was a nice touch, really makes you feel like you are in the old south. I really enjoyed just looking at all of the different little touches inside the venue. Such a historical feel to a truly historical sight. They did a great job accomodating the wedding and cocktail hour. Thanks again to the inn keeper who helped my brother with his boutineer; we never could have done it without you. Complimentary sherry, port, and brandy every evening for those who need a night cap. My husband and I are "easy keepers" when it comes to traveling. We often pick middle of the road hotels and spend our money on excursions and good food. This time, we wanted a bit more luxury. The John Rutledge House was perfect for us. The concierge (Damian) was very helpful, he spent lots of time answering our questions and making suggestions. The wood floors and appropriate decorations of the hotel contributed to the vintage feel of the place. We stayed in the Heyward room on the top floor of the main building and very much enjoyed the room. We used the gas fireplace every night and found the spacious room a wonderful place to relax after our daily excursions. We enjoyed our complimentary breakfasts each morning (which they will serve to you at the time and place you request- ie courtyard, ballroom, room etc) We enjoyed the brandy, port and sherry they offered and the afteroon tea. We took advantage of the streetside balcony off the ballroom where my husband enjoyed a cigar and we watched the night. The staircase in the hotel is apparently original to the house and it tells you all about it as you traverse the floors. I found the creaking wood a wonderful part of the experience and could not help but think of all the travellers before me each time I passed on them. The old Parkay floors in the house are a piece of art themselves and I can only imagine them in their prime. We enjoyed our stay here, we were within 10 blocks of anything we wanted to see - we walked to all our events. The hotel is in the center of the historic district and we visited many old museum homes, went to the Charleston Museum (a 2+ hour event), took a carriage ride, took a night tour, during the days here we walked nearly every street in the historic district and enjoyed many nice meals in the quaint little restaraunts about the city. We found the John Rutledge House to be worth the money for a no hassle, romatic and authentic vacation. a few things to note... this hotel does not have a elevator. (didn't bother us a bit) the parking for the hotel is around the back off of king street and you will need a code to get out of the lot (provided by the concierge) there is no restaraunt on site.... many wonderful restaraunts within just a few blocks read more

John Rutledge House Inn - Beautiful green wrought iron and brick facade make for a beautiful, eye-catching, historical land mark - Hotels Near Me - Charleston, South Carolina

This comparatively moderately priced inn is nicely located in an area within walking distance of King St, Queen St. and Broad St. Though this historic inn is on Broad St., our room was across the courtyard behind the main building, in the carriage house. We liked this arrangement because we appreciate quiet. We also liked the quaint courtyard, garden plantings and seating areas in the courtyard--very picturesque. Staff was very helpful and responded politely and in a friendly manner to all of our questions. The beds were relatively comfortable, with TempurPedic mattresses, but these seemed a bit old. The TempurPedic mattress that I have at home is about ten years old and is also memory foam, but is thicker and not sagging as much as the one in our room. For someone with back issues. mattress comfort when traveling is important. It makes the difference between a restful sleep and poor sleep. Maybe the corporation that owns this inn could look into this. So, this brings us to decor. The room was nicely decorated, though I would not call it elegant. It was comfortable enough, though shabby in some of the details. The tray that held the washcloths on the bathroom vanity was rusting. The base of the lamp by the window had peeling paint. There were scuff marks on the bottom of the wallpaper by the door in the bathroom. The seat on the toilet was a little loose, so one had to be Cary when sitting on it. Bathroom tub needs to be re-porcelainized or scrubbed better. Looked a little soiled. Someone with a better eye for details should look at these rooms and consider more training of housekeeping staff and/ or decor upgrade. A room can look historic without being shabby and shabby chic decor is not the same as dirty or worn. Nice touches were complimentary breakfast with some decent choices, but if offering bagels, please also offer cream cheese. Coffee was hot-- much appreciated. Another nice touch was tea in a nice upper room of the main house. However, again, decor needs upgrading. Getting a designer into this inn to spruce things up would be great. Details and aesthetics do matter in the hospitality business. A note about the tv-- could not get any movie channels or streaming services with movies. Had to watch old re-runs of shows or use their wifi to watch on my own device. Also-- please inspect room between guests. We found someone's take-out meal in the mini-refrigerator in the cabinet in the bathroom... odd place for a refrigerator. If arriving in late afternoon or evening, you will be greeted by a very knowledgeable, but fast-talking concierge person... funny at times, but made my head spin. Could not get a word in edgewise... and I am used to fast talkers (having been raised in the north)! Daytime concierge was a breath of fresh air, very sweet, very helpful. All in all-- not an unpleasant stay, but not keen on returning. Seems this place is putting in a good-faith effort, so the three stars are for that, but would give more stars with some improvements. read more

We were planning to only stay one night, but ended up extending THREE nights. We stayed in the carriage homes in the back, but it still felt like we were guests of the governor. Room was stately, perfect temperature, tempurpedic beds, very funny and friendly concierge (loved Margo!), unlimited ice cold bottled water, parking ($14 per day), loved the option of breakfast in the ballroom/porch/courtyard/room service. Also, it was super quiet. I was sad to leave after 3 nights. Exceptional is an understatement. This Inn was flawless from top to bottom and everyone in the staff was very kind and helpful. Jim and Margo, the concierges, were top notch and made our visit very memorable. Jim actually helped me plan my proposal to my girlfriend and gave us a free room upgrade for the occasion. Inside the house is beautiful and the ballroom on the 2nd floor is a great place to lounge and read up on some history. Complimentary WiFi, bottled water, liquor in the ballroom, and coffee at certain hours is just an added plus that really makes me wish I could add more stars to this review. My husband and I truly got lucky landing at John Rutledge House. We had booked elsewhere and that hotel had no hot water upon arrival. They booked us alternate accommodations and we couldn't be more thankful that we got moved to JRH! From the moment we walked through the door, Margo made us feel right at home and incredibly welcome, especially considering the circumstances. This B&B is a great mix of beautifully historic with all the modern comforts (like a tempur-pedic bed and unlimited water bottles!) that you'd want. All of the concierges had great information and recommendations for us throughout the weekend. The balcony and courtyard were both great places to enjoy a drink or snack in the gorgeous weather. The location can't be beat... we walked everywhere and were around the corner from the great restaurants on Queen St. We'll be booking here first next trip. read more

We decided to visit Charleston at the last minute and with it being a Saturday night during the summer, most things were booked. I found this Inn on Yelp and called to see if they had anything available. It was our Lucky Day! We were able to book a room and enjoy the greatness that this B&B had to offer. We arrived just in time for the afternoon tea and brandy. The little snacks were a great treat after the long drive. After enjoying the snacks, we went back to the room. We literally booked the room 45 mins before getting there and they had a personalized card waiting on us. (nice surprise). I was also surprised when we found the mini fridge. The room was very clean and the beds were amazing. Since this was my first stay at a B&B, I was pretty excited about the breakfast. There were plenty of items to choose from and everything we had was delicious! They did send one wrong entree, but with a call to the front desk, that was corrected very quickly. On top of everything above, the location was AMAZING. I would definitely suggest visiting this inn during your next visit to Charleston! read more

Just went here to celebrate our 20th anniversary. While Charleston in July is not optimum (close to 100 degrees every day), this B&B was. From the accommodations to the breakfasts and especially the concierges, this might be the best experience we have ever had with a B&B. we chose this inn because it had a reputation for being dog friendly. we knew charleston is a dog friendly town and we were looking forward to exploring it with our dog. however, she got very sick during our stay, necessitating an ER visit, and the JRH staff went above and beyond in helping us out during this stressful and scary time. beyond this, the place is very comfortable and cozy. the bed was so very comfortable, and the breakfast was quite good. the inn is in a great location, with much to see and do within a comfortable walking distance. read more

This is a wonderful property, and a great location. We have a lovely, spacious room, with a terrific shower. Morning breakfast is delicious and served in a wonderful ballroom. There are only 19 rooms so it never feels crowded. Great walk ability to downtown Charleston. Margo, our concierge, recommended Norman, with Port City Car Service, and he was terrific. He shared quite a bit of Charleston history with us, and some restaurant recommendations too. We will definitely share his name with others. read more

Very memorable stay at a historical home. The staff was always engaged and helpful. Our reservation was Room 7 with a comfortable bed and beautiful room. We enjoyed a spacious adjoining parlor. Breakfast choices were hot and well prepared. Service by Maurice was the best. Highly recommended for a special stay in Charleston. read more
