A couple months ago, we refinanced our home and we got quotes from several brokers to see who could accommodate us. There are 3 things I consider important factors in getting a refinance: 1) Interest rate 2) Monthly payment 3) Customer service With rates being very low recently, many of the brokers we got quoted from were similar. So really, the biggest factor was the customer service and how quickly the loan would get processed. The first time we refinanced, we went through a major bank and it took EIGHT MONTHS...there was nothing wrong with us, it just took that freakin' long. Extremely stressful process. No more major banks for us. Then I found John. Great references and all. Always responded to my emails and phone calls. Him and his team took care of our refinance in SIX WEEKS! After reading all the rave reviews we decided to contact them. Took 2 days for them to get back to us and that was because I had to call them. That wouldn't be a problem except they had someone in the office able to receive our app and pull our report. So they can do that but not call? I found out they pulled our report not because they called to let us know but because we have a credit watch with our bank. Our bank sent us an email and let us know the moment they did it. In general, working with John was great. He was always willing to answer any questions I had at sometimes late times and he was quick and responsive. Supreme Lending in general was great as well; his team was solid and always had good answers and feedback from my questions. Two things happened though that significantly dampened my experience enough to knock off a star for each: 1. We had a situation where the sellers were moving out of state and giving up their over 65 tax exemption, which would be passed off to us for the remainder of the year under Texas law. Original closing estimates provided by Supreme Lending for the tax amount to be held in escrow included this tax pass-off. However, on the final estimate delivered (3 days before closing), they came back and said they cannot assume the risk of the seller remaining in state and subsequently continuing to claim the exemption and amended the closing costs, which increased our amount due at closing by an extra couple thousand dollars. For first time homebuyers who were cobbling everything together in order to close, this was a very tough pill to swallow only a few days before closing and we felt like this should have been addressed much earlier in the process instead of forcing us to pull together more money at the last minute to make the close. 2. I know this is standard in the mortgage industry and this is more directed toward Supreme Lending and not John specifically, because I doubt he has much say in it, but probably the next day after we closed Supreme Lending turned right around and sold the mortgage to Wells Fargo. As someone who would politely describe Wells Fargo as "unethical", it was a bit frustrating to be inadvertently thrust into supporting their business. I wish Supreme Lending were more upfront about which loan servicers they deal with. Oh well, I guess we should just wait a few years until it gets sold to Bank of America and then we can support the other bastion of evil in American home financing. Overall I still recommend using Supreme Lending and John specifically, they have some of the more competitive rates in town and were very supportive during a stressful time. I would definitely take them over some faceless internet lender, because the support they provided during the process was pretty valuable. read more
