I have been seeing Dr. Chu for over a decade and had no plans to stop, but this past scheduling experience has turned me off. Usually I come in every 6 months and I fill out a reminder card which is usually sent to me ahead of my next appointment. But the past few times I have not received a card in the mail so when my appointment is due I'm not able to plan for it. Edna usually does the scheduling and working with her has gotten progressively difficult. Usually she can put me on a waiting list and call a day before to confirm, but this time she said I had to call to confirm. This is fine but I questioned why she couldn't call as usual, and she just gave a non-answer ending with "whatever". I couldn't believe the disrespect! Edna has never apologized for the inconvenience (even in the past), knowing that it's usually very difficult to reschedule. Appointments can be weeks to months out (there is only one hygienist left). Anyway I'll miss having Dr. Chu as my dentist but I won't tolerate anymore the attitude Edna has displayed toward me the past few years. Good luck read more

Had a dental tech carelessly chip my front tooth enamel while rushing to do a cleaning. It's very visible. The whole thing was excessively painful and I regret not saying anything then because I didn't want to go back at all with how pricey the whole thing was out of pocket. I had a filling of my lower right back tooth fall out and I was told by another dentist that I needed a "root canal" and that nobody would be able to do a filling because my root clearance was only 1.1mm. Well I decided to get another opinion and Dr Chu said that my tooth is dying and that eventually in a couple years I will need a root canal but that he could be careful and not scrape too low and place a filling for the tooth in the meantime. After his procedure I was back to eating the next day and mouth feels 100% again!! This dentist is honest and very experienced! Thank you Dr Chu!! read more

I am so grateful to Dr. Chu. My partial denture broke on a Friday late afternoon. My normal dentist had already closed. I have a speaking engagement on Sunday so I desperately needed my teeth to be right. And, the replacement tooth happens to be in the front of my mouth! I called about 30 minutes before their closing time and they said if I could get there within 15 minutes he could see me. They didn't promise anything, but said he could look at it and see if he could fix it for me. I got in right away and he said he would normally recommend sending it to the lab, but since I needed it for this weekend he would go ahead and fix it for me. Here I am smiling and happy with the great service I got. I would have paid anything really to get this fixed. It's an important speaking engagement. Saved the day and restored faith in honest dentist . For years I've been driving to the valley to avoid South Pasadena dentist. In the past, I've had dentist attempt to do work that was not needed. Even one dental office across the street that I had issues with over billing. My dentist retired and I had a chipped tooth that needed immediate treatment. After reading reviews I decided to give Dr. Chu a try. Hands down I found my new dentist. I thought that I was going to have to get a root canal, but thank goodness it was just a filling. It was a painless experience and Dr. Chu made sure I was comfortable. Staff was so friendly, they got me in a same day appointment. I was all over the place trying to remotely be on a conference meeting while getting my dental work done. It was one of those days!!! They were so accommodating and didn't make me feel bad. I have been to Dr. John's dentistry several times and through a few years but failed to write a review, which is long overdue. I usually go to another dental office for regular care and whatnot, at least more than 10 years now. However, because they do not open on Saturdays, during emergent situations, I had to seek care elsewhere, this is where Dr. John came in. 1. Many years back, I was in excruciating pain, and I found Dr. John. He took care of it without fuss. Of course, I had to do a root canal on the tooth and got a crown. 2. I had a tooth implant done in...2022. But I woke up one morning and the screw of the implant came out. I was very lucky that I didn't swallow it while I was sleeping. Again, my regular dental office was not available, so I called upon Dr. John. He cleaned it and put it back in, and suggested I go back to the regular dental office for them to check during regular business days/hours. 3. This time around, I had a nagging tooth ache. Again, I went back to my regular dental office...3 times! Each time, they filed down the tooth , stating it was because of the implant that I recently got (mind you this is a different tooth). Needless to say, I went back to Dr. John and.. he took care of it! Dr. John is an experienced dentist, and he knows what he is doing. He and his office take great care of the patients, at least he took great care of me every time. It is also really convenient that his practice opens on Saturdays as sometimes emergencies do happen. I would just like to say Thank you, Thank you and Thank you, again! The afternoon before Thanksgiving and a crown popped off my tooth that was done a couple years ago by a different dentist. My wife found Dr. Chu and staff and when she asked if he could see me, today, Edna went to check and called us back. Yes, I could be seen at 5pm!! I got there early, greeted by a very affable Edna, filled out the paper work, and after looking over the crown and tooth by a super nice and super mellow Dr. Chu, it took all of maybe 20mins, total, to recement the crown back on. Thus, my Thanksgiving holiday weekend was saved (the dentist who did the crown and should have done the recementing wouldn't even be in his office until Monday the 30th) from what would have been a tragic hassle. I've been going to Dr. Chu since 2014 and he has been consistent with his care. He answers all of my questions and doesn't try to have me do unnecessary dental work. He gives me options and I never feel pressured. In short, I trust Dr. Chu. I have had different hygienists and have been happy with all of them. They take me in promptly, and if I've had to wait, it's been only for a brief time. Another big reason I go there is that the office staff is very professional, friendly, and kind. In particular, Edna has helped me on many occasions. She returns my calls promptly and gets my messages to Dr. Chu when necessary. She always has a smile and is happy to help! One of my molars was starting to tingle, so I went to my dentist of many years, who saw the problem immediately: my filling had fallen out. As he prepared the tooth to put in a new filling, he saw near the bottom the tooth was split. It could not be fixed. All the could do was put in a temporary filling that might last up to two weeks. I would have to have the pulled out, something my dentist could not do. He recommended an oral surgeon in Pasadena, but that man could not see me for three weeks. I went onto Yelp and searched near me for "oral surgeons," and the name of Dr. Chu came up. I called. He answered the phone personally. I told him my problem. He said while he was a general dentist, he did pull teeth. Also, because it was a Monday, a day that he did not schedule patients, I could come in right away. I did. Wow. He provided a great service, as did his assistant, Edna. First, he went through my medical history well, asked some questions, then took my blood pressure, which was normal. For pulling the tooth, he me each step along the way. He first gave a topical pain killer, so that the Novocain shots would not hurt. They didn't. He let the Novocain sit for five minutes, then he carefully pulled at the split tooth, using a few tools. I did not feel a thing. After a few minutes, he pulled it out as one unit. He showed me how the tooth was split. He gave me a prescription for a pain killer for when the Novocain wore off. That works, as I'm typing fine now. If I later wanted an implant, Dr. Chu could do so. My tooth was one that one cannot see when I smile, so I won't replace it. I was impressed with Dr. Chu's diligence and easy manner. As my normal dentist is retiring, I may switch to Dr, Chu. read more

I went there as an emergency because I was in a tremendous amount of pain. Thank you doctor and office personnel for taking me in btw. I loved this man honesty. I basically need 1 old root canal re-done and unfortunately a new one as well. He advised me to see a specialist since I was having to get one of them te-done. He does root canals so I was surprised that he would refer me out: however, I appreciate his honesty!! I would rather see a specialist since being incredibly terrified of the dentist is what got me here in the first place. The last thing I want is to have to get the same job done twice . My wisdom tooth got infected last night and I could barely sleep. I tried to call Dr. Chu office this morning at 8:45am and didn't expect I could book an appointment today. Surprisingly Dr. Chu answered the phone right away and told me his office is closed today. I explained my symptoms and told him I tolerate can't bare the pain anymore... I can't believe there are no reviews yet. Well, i can and I can't. This place is a total hole-in-the-wall office on Fair Oaks. I had a lot of trouble finding the door but once I found it I realized it wasn't that hard. I don't have dental insurance, I work freelance and have yet to figure the whole insurance thing out, but I had a really super painful tooth in the back of my mouth (from a filling that I'd lost several years ago while chewing gum and seeing the movie Planet of the Apes... make that many several years ago). My cheek was starting to swell up... it was nasty. I asked a few of my friends, no one could recommend a dentist (an obvious shortage of good dentists in this town!) So I called 1-800-DENTIST (actually, I used their website and they called me.) They asked if I had insurance, I said "no" and they patched me through to Dr. Chu's office. The receptionist was SO sweet and she made an appointment for me, I was frazzled and concerned about price and she assured me there would be things we could work out. They even accommodated my work schedule, staying later than usual to help me. When I went it, Dr. Chu offered to pull it at a discounted price and even took a post-dated check because I didn't get paid for a few days. He yanked that bastard tooth right out of my mouth and sent me on my way. The assistant was really kind too. I would totally recommend him to anyone who needs a dentist. He was really caring, nice and to the point about things. And their business card is hilarious. It's two teeth in a shower (I'll upload it to the images.) I am the single biggest baby in the world when it comes to going to the dentist. I literally have avoided them like the plague, and in the process, developed a small plague in my mouth. Today, I had a severe gum abscess that required immediate help. I refused to go to a dentist but my lady's a nurse and told me to stop being a baby and go. They took me in as a last minute walk up on Veterans Day. Edna and Dr. Chu are just about the friendly people on the planet. They were quick to ease my nerves and were calm and patient as they walked me through everything. It can't be understated how comforting it is to have a dentist who explains everything they're going to do. Dr. Chu has an extremely calm voice that makes you feel like everything is going to be okay. It takes a special kind of person to make you feel calm even though you're writing in pain because there are needles left and right going into your gums. Yes, I had quite a painful procedure but having Dr. Chu calmly narrate everything that was happening made me feel assured that I was in the best possible hands. Edna also deserves lots of praise for being a great sidekick. They're a wonderful team and I can't recommend them enough. read more

I am the biggest scaredy-cat of dentists which is why after years of avoidant neglect I needed an emergency appointment due to an infected & loose wisdom tooth that should have come out in my younger years. Edna took my morning call & kindly told me they were booked that day. I explained my symptoms & asked if she could squeeze me in. She did. I think she & Dr. Chu worked on me during what would have been their lunch break. They were very kind, non-judgemental, gentle, & expedient. My avoidance was also due to the fact that I have a very low tolerance for pain yet a very high tolerance for meds. I always need a higher dosage of anesthesia than the average person. I told Dr. Chu this & he offered to gently test the area he administered Novocain. Sure enough, I felt that poking around & got a second dosage. I survived that emergency visit which resulted in the extraction of two wisdom teeth, and a follow-up appointment which resulted in a 3rd wisdom tooth extraction. We are still waiting to see if and how much my PPO will cover, but even if 100% out of pocket, the fees for the two office visits, exams, X-rays & procedures are much less than I feared they would be (around $500 in total). I have more work to do but am on a roll with a third appointment scheduled. read more
