Frustrating experience at Johnny Mercer Theater. At the theater to see Hadesens musical. There are several things that need major help. The line to get in the theater was ridiculously long. There were only three metal detectors, people were trying to get in theater from everywhere. The seating isn't elevated enough where you can see around the person in front of you. Parking of course was ridiculous, to be expected, but there should have been someone directing traffic. Oh and I called the non emergency number for assistance to get exit the parking garage and they were unable to assist. assistance with leaving the parking garage. We have been here waiting more than an hour. Do better Johnny Mercer if you want to keep people coming to theater. read more

I recently attended the Tina Turner musical and this theater was very easy to navigate. Entry was fast and seamless. Even getting through concessions and the bar was fairly fast. I recommend arriving at least an hour early to get through everything and to find your seats before the lights go out. Parking is so so, there are a few lots available in the area. read more

Long time theatre lover. With decades of viewings I can easily say this was the worst theater experience I've ever attended. Every worker here feels like they've been berated to the point of soul breaking indifference. Based on how many small stupid rules there are for every single patron entering....i can't imagine what management puts them through. No one in this building could possibly exude vibrancy or passion. The absolute antithesis of what you want to feel walking into a theatre experience. It feels like visiting someone in jail or going to court. I've never experienced security like this. Not at Disney world. Broadway theatre. TSA. Never. The rules are ridiculous. Read allllllll the rules very carefully before going. I'm used to doing that for a concert or convention, but have never had to do so for a more classic theatre experience. It didn't even cross my mind that there would be bag rules? -I had vape in my bag. Had to throw it out. I can't keep a vape in my bag and not smoke?? You can't have cigarettes in your bag. Nothing. What a joke. You can't smoke on a plane or in the airport, but imagine not being allowed to have it on your person?? What? I know there are all different types of shows that go on here. Maybe vaping gets wild at hockey? I understand that space being so large it'd be hard to control...But I was just going to the regular theater venue to see some ballet. Perhaps the theater should not be put under the same weird scrutiny as the arena... -new bag size restriction is wildly small. It's like a tiny clutch you are allowed and that's it. Above that they charge you to check it. My bag is 7"x8"x2.5". So very reasonable and yet too big apparently. I told them 'they just made me throw out my vape and get back in line. Nothing was said about the bag, or I would have left and kept my vape too. I'm not checking a $2k+ bag with you. There are people right there walking in with bigger bags.' She barely looked in it and told me to go ahead. Looking around inside practically every woman here had a bag bigger than mine. Idk wtf that was?? -Two vodka cranberries cost FORTY DOLLARS. No listed prices so ask before you order. I'd wager it'll be cheaper if you do. -the sound system seems fine for music, but garbles words and you can't understand anything. Not a problem for the show I saw but I'd never see a comedian or vocalist here. -The show we saw was fine. The sets were lovely (tho nearly bare set changes would leave you in the dark for a full minute!). The costumes were beautiful. Like if it was a community show and tickets were half the price it'd be splendid, but realistically at what they are charging the talent wasn't there. I'm not sure if the sound system was messing with the dancers hearing correctly, but it's wild to pay $90 a ticket to see a troupe that was consistently off time. Maybe I'd feel more forgiving if the security process wasn't so frustrating, but after all that it all just felt lackluster. We left at intermission. I've never left a show at intermission in my life. -There is NO re-entry. Can't step outside for air during intermission. Can't run out to the car for that medicine they made you take out of your bag. You're SOL if you have to leave at all. Like all the rules, this feels like a big middle finger to the patrons and their experience. They already got your ticket money. They do not have a care to spare for anything further. TLDR-Horrible. Bad outdated venue with the worst vibes. If you're charging professional theater prices you should operate on that level. Starting with creating an environment guests can be comfortable in. Then probably fixing the sound. You couldn't pay me to attend another event here. The price gauging is absolutely wild at every stop. Save yourself the headache. Skip any show here. read more

My daughter and I attended the Black Violin concert here. The venue is small enough that all the seats are great seats. And the acoustics are very good. Black Violin was spectacular!!!! One of the best concerts I have ever seen. They are talented and extremely creative. Their genre-defying music combines classic violin and viola classical pieces with contemporary hip hop being spun by a DJ and drums. Their combinations are acoustically beautiful, enhanced by their light display. They said they want to break down stereotypes and "crush peoples perceptions" and that is exactly what their thought provoking music does. I can't say enough nice things about this performance. It was a very moving experience that my daughter and I will never forget. If given the opportunity, they are a must see. read more

I love this venue. Here tonight for the Hiplet Ballerinas! The Savannah Black Heritage Festival! I would recommend this place for any theatrical performance. This event did not disappoint. The dancers were on "POINTE"! Pun intended! The hip-hop infusion was extremely entertaining and the Ballet was beautiful!!! read more

Please do not purchase any tickets at this location until the night of the show. My friend and I was looking forward to attending the Savannah Comedy Festival Show featuring: Sommore, Lavell Crawford, Bill Bellamy, & Tony Roberts. However, due to unforeseen circumstances, my friend husband was admitted to the hospital. Regretfully, we had to cancel our hotel reservations. I also called the theater in hopes of receiving a refund and the person I spoke to said she spoke to the promoter and in spite of the circumstances, he refused to issue a refund. We were willing to provide proof that her husband was admitted to hospital. In my opinion, that's what I call greed, lacking empathy, and compassion. There wasn't an option to resell the tickets on Ticketmaster either. Never again. read more

Nothing about this night was worthy of a good review. Security staff was training as people were lining up to go in. The makeshift concession stand was priced great but had no clue what they were doing.handed me a scalding hot pretzel on a piece of tissue paper. Which caused my hand to burn.the ushers had zero clue where any area was to seat people. They were fumbling around looking for seats. Then there was the opening act. To say he was a comidian is insulting to a true comidian , nothing he said was remotely funny. He made fun of the different services. Then due to lack of sales, they came up to the balcony and told everyone they could move down to orchestra seating. It was a mad rush, resulting in one lady attempting to run down the stairs and trip in he spiked heals. Plenty of seats were still available even after everyone came down. Now for the show itself, there was a lot of potential that was not utilized. You could barely hear the singer singing, he could not decide what voice to use. Was not sure if it was supposed to be a comedy or a concert. They claim to be a Vegas show, but there were long breaks with no one on stage but the boring band. Best part of the show was when someone threw a bra onstage. I may have been expecting to much from this show. read more

I attended a performance of Rodgers and Hammerstein by the Savannah Philharmonic. It was my first time at the Johnny Mercer Theatre, and I had a question where my seats were, where the elevator was, etc. I had five minutes to spare so I needed to know where I was going immediately, and I couldn't find an usher anywhere except at the various ticket checkpoints. Luckily the theatre wasn't too big or complex to maneuver in, so I was fine, and the performance didn't start on time. I was seated in the balcony section and the entire row in front of me was empty, so no one blocked my view! Woohoo! The conductor had great energy throughout the night and helped make the experience great, besides the fact that the orchestra and singers did a great job. The conductor was just the cherry on top. Another flaw was that they didn't have enough programs to give out at the start of the show. At intermission they seemed to have brought out more boxes from storage. I guess they didn't expect such a large turnout. I'd fix the usher and program situation, and then the theatre will be worthy of five stars! read more

Oh come on Savannah ... you can do better than this. I'm sure when this facility first opened (when? late 60s? early 70s?) this was a high point for the city and the memory of popular songwriter and local boy, Johnny Mercer... but now... This facility just seems sort of ... dismal in a way. The entire center is in dire need of an updating... the acoustics inside the Johnny Mercer Theater are fine (more or less) but everything from the seating to the gloomy lobby are in dire need of refurbishment/updating. I attended a show here during Savannah's "music festival" and upon entering the lobby, I immediately felt it was dingy. Lighting truly needs to be updated and the whole space needs to be made more inviting. Concession booths are just sort of strewn around the lobby without any particular signage or notices (and the majority of concession staffers seem disinterested in being there overall.) There is a large parking lot outside the theater that charges you to park. There are handicap spaces but those are none too close to the actual entrance. There is a handicap ramp that allows you to bypass the stairs but it's addition appears to have been an afterthought. I was pleased to see the act that I went for here but I am in no hurry to rush back to this theater. I was expecting better theater facility to have Johnny Mercer's name on it. read more

The performances are average to great. However, the theater is ugly. Went to the Gaillard Theater in Charleston and was blown away. It is beautiful. You need to give this theater a big facelift. You are Savannah. This theater is not a credit to you. It is cold and dingy. read more
