We traveled to Charlotte today for family time and found this restaurant near our destination. We got to town early and decided to eat. I got the bruschetta and mozzarella sticks. The bruschetta was on bread that was very soft in the center with crispy edges. It was perfect. Huge slice of mozzarella, which was made in house. On top of that was the diced tomato glazed with balsamic. The mozzarella sticks were crispy. They gave me a basket of complementary garlic knots, which were absolutely amazing with homemade marinara sauce. They have a large selection of beer, wine and liquor with 18 local drafts on tap. The staff was super kind and brought me a box for my leftovers with smaller containers for the sauces. This place is super nice inside with several televisions and music. The bar area is my favorite. Two appetizers and three beers with the knots was only $40 bucks! Well worth the stop. read more

FABULOUS! We discovered John's Place this evening! My husband and I had the Shrimp Scampi and our son had a chicken dish. DELICIOUS! Everything was superb! Loved the complimentary garlic knots. I must admit it's a bit confusing that both John's Place and Mario's Italian Restaurant the same entrance/building and offer the same menu. Do you want a bar atmosphere? The service was excellent, the food mediocre, but disappointing was the fact I noticed a notation on the menu that the owner is still petty enough to charge $1 per person if you bring in your own birthday cake or team cake or other desert. This restaurant used to be across from the Siskey Y and we would try to have an "end of season" celebration for our soccer team of 6 year-olds there. He charged a minimum $10 or $15 (can't remember which) per child. At that age, each child would only eat 1 slice of pizza (maybe 2) and drink a coke. We wanted to just order a couple pizzas and drinks, but he did not permit that. To him, it was just a way to make more money. Sad but true. Petty once and obviously still that way. read more

My husband and I were really, really impressed with this place. Friends recommended it. We tried several of their cocktails and had the garlic knots with homemade marinara sauce. Service was amazing. Our waiter and the bartender truly went above and beyond. We got a ribeye with sides as well as the Chicken Picatta. Both were top-notch and unlike anything you can get in the area. They have a real chef in the kitchen. We had lots to bring home & are already excited to go back! There's a "family side" and a "bar side." The Mario side is sedate, and looked like a very nice place to eat. John's next door is a sports bar that will remind you somewhat of an Appleby's, but has a much more personalized touch to it. And the place was jamming when I went there for dinner Saturday. The food was excellent of course, as was everything else in there. I had the Chicken Marsala, and it was very good. We had a reservation to sit on the outside patio even though it was a cold night, and we walked in with our masks on. Obviously, COVID was an issue for myself and the 3 other adults I was with. We had a nice meal and the waitress was very attentive. But NONE of the staff wore masks and our waitress proudly announced at the end of our meal, that she was fired from her last job for refusing to be vaccinated. I grade most restaurants five stars based on: quality, quantity, service (waiter/waitress' s courtesy, atmosphere/cleanliness, and above-and-beyond (what else they offered that distinguishes themselves). I ordered a "seafood medley " pasta dish. From this dish, I can tell the techniques were perfected. They used fresh house-made pasta sauce mixed with stir-fried seafood mix and added everything to the pasta that has been cooked to perfection. Then, the resulting mixture was baked to perfection in the oven. It was fresh and hot. Technique-wise, everything was perfect. However, the scallop was tasteless; scallops' smell was fishy but it was tasteless. That means they picked the freshest frozen scallop they could have got their hand to since it maintained the texture. But scallop was pre-frozen. The same thing could be said of the clams and shrimp. So, bottom line, their technique was great, their ingredients, not so much to boast. That was the reason they would have earned four star review from me if it had been non-Covid time. read more

Johns Place is the bar restaurant next to Mario's Pizza between dt Mathews and Providence Promenade. Be aware that every entree is either pasta or served over a bed of spaghetti. Per the menu, the only non pasta entree is Shrimp Broccillini. Ordered the $24 large entree and it arrived with 3/4 plate of spaghetti. The 8 shrimp and broccoli could fit on a salad plate. The managers only offer was to take my meal and bring the same 8 Shrimp and broccoli sans spaghetti. Go to Johns for drinks, pizza, and pasta. Go elsewhere for a good meal. read more

Came here on a Sunday evening with friends. (table for 8) First time here and oh my I was pleasantly surprised. I've driven by this restaurant multiply times, but never ate here until a friend suggested it. Ordered garlic knots, and calamari. Delicious. The calamari was fresh and a crispy outer crust not too heavy on the breading. For the entree I got the penne alla vodka with blackened chicken. Suggestion by our awesome waiter. Pasta was al dente and the vodka sauce was creamy and luscious. Husband got salad with blackened chicken and shrimp he totally enjoyed it. They have a full bar so I got a Stolli Dolli's (sp?) Very good as well. This is a great spot in Matthews for dinner if you don't want to drive into the city. I highly recommend. I'll be back. Sorry no pictures - good time and good food I forgot. Look - it ain't the greatest bar, the greatest staff, or even the best beer selection. But it is a very solid bar, friendly/cool staff, and good drinks. The place is actually attached to Mario's - so, same food. Which is good, but a bit overpriced. Their pizzas are fantastic and I've never had a bad meal. There are 8 TVs for sports and 2 for Keno (who the f**k plays this stupid game anyway? Suckers bet). They have outdoor seating under cover and some totally outside with cornhole. I love the consistency, the reliable friendliness and service, and excellent food. Give it a go - especially if you are a Yankees fan. read more

Came here for Easter and had great time with the family. A total of 8 of us sitting in outside patio which was very nice and open. Our server was excellent and was on time and worked super hard be on time with our drinks especially that all of us had ordered unlimited mimosas. The mimosas were 12 dollars and they only charged a penny refill. I decided to have the buffet and it was ok wasn't all that crazy. I paid 35 dollars and only had 1 plate so I should of just ordered something from the menu instead. I also tried the ribeye because people were hyping it up to be the best in town, It was good but definitely not all that great. If you want to watch a game and have a few beers, there are big screen TVs at the Bar and this patio as well. The restaurant is split into two sections, one that is family friendly if you come in with the kids and the other half for a more adult-friendly atmosphere. If you want to host parties like fundraisers, bridal showers or family get-togethers, there's a room in the back so you can have the privacy and experience as well. I came to Charlotte, North Carolina to visit my aunt and uncle and this was a "must-see" destination place on my visit and I was very impressed. You can tell the owners have put their heart and soul into this place and their staff are top notch. Upon entering every employee was wearing "Team Finn" t-shirts to support a fundraiser for a child with medical needs that lives in their community. If you want to really see the community and spirit of the residents of Charlotte then, John's Place is a place you need to check out. The food is definitely great as well. The chef they have on staff is creative with the specials and the taste pays off for that creativity. Big portions for a decent price. My wife and I just really didn't enjoy our time at John's Place. Don't get me wrong... the service was good and I'm sure the owners are well-loved by the regulars. We just thought the food was no different than what we throw together at home on a weeknight. Our waiter brought out garlic knots on the house (nice touch), but they were hard and chewy. My mint julep ($7 "deal" on Saturdays) was an 8oz cup of ice, club soda, and a splash of bourbon. We both got "specialty" pasta dishes. Her pasta margherita would've tasted better with jarred tomato sauce (her words), and my veal scallopini reminded me of bad beef stroganoff with a lot of butter. We really don't have picky tastes, but I feel like nobody writing 5-star reviews of John's Place has ever been somewhere like Mama Ricottas. Perhaps the appeal of this place is Mario's (the adjoining restaurant), where you can bring your family out for a meal of cheap comfort food. However, you get the same menu over at John's Place, and what is touted as a good date spot is really just the same average food served in a really loud bar. read more
