Alvarado is the oldest city in Johnson County but it is not the county seat. That's Cleburne. This…read moreis a small town that is mostly agriculture though the large Sabre Structures building is here. This marker is located in Alvarado square. It is slightly weather worn and reads, "Early settler David Mitchell established a trading post near here in the late 1840s, about the time colonists of W. S. Peters' empresario grant began to settle the area. Colonist William Balch, who settled on an area land grant in 1852, was later to become known as the "Father of Alvarado" for his efforts in having the townsite surveyed in 1854, establishing the first general merchandise stores on the square, and for donating land for a cemetery, school, and union church. The town, named for Alvarado, Mexico, soon boasted a post office, homes, businesses, and churches. A community school established about 1855 became The Alvarado Masonic Institute in 1875. "Rail lines extended through Alvarado by the Missouri Pacific Railroad in 1881 and by the Chicago, Texas, and Mexican Central Railroad in 1884 spurred a local economic boom. By 1885 Alvarado had several churches, two schools, two gins, an opera house, a bank, a newspaper, and a population of about 2,000. The Masonic Institute became the Alvarado Normal Institute in 1899 and Alvarado High School in 1908-09. "A large jail/town hall erected at this site in the mid-1880s was removed in the 1920s and replaced with a garden arrangement; a gazebo was added later. As well as being a Granbury Landmark it is also in the Register of Texas Historic Landmarks. This house is two stories with an attic and sits on a pier and beam foundation. Canadian merchant J. C. Lees built this home for his wife, Cora Allen Lees and their young daughter. Mr. Lees came to Granbury in the 1880's after meeting Cora in Arizona. Cora was from Granbury, but had gone to Arizona with her brother, Hiram. Shortly after J. C. and Cora came to Granbury, he purchased a furniture store/undertaking business from J. D. Foster. The business was on the Granbury Town Square and Mr. Lees became a prosperous Granbury merchant. They built the house and lived on the same block as Cora's sister, Loucinda Allen and her husband, W. D. Daniel. In 1895, Mr. Lees sold his business and home in Granbury, purchased another business in Cleburne and moved his family there. S. L. Bowden purchased the home for $4,000, and moved his wife and children there. Shortly after moving into the home, S. L. Bowden's wife and one son died. S.L. Bowden lived in the house with his daughter, Maude, until his death in 1903. After his death, Maude married Hardy Bryan and bought her sister and brothers out of their share of the house. Sadly, Maude died two short months later, three days after giving birth to a daughter who also died. Hardy Bryan lived alone in the house for five years, and in 1914 he married Fannie Gordon. Hardy Bryan lived a happy and prosperous life in the house until his death October 18, 1945, thirty-six years to the day after he and Maude purchased the house. The second Mrs. Bryan was the daughter of another merchant on the Square and her father was the employer of John Street Helen who claimed to be John Wilkes Booth. The gun he claimed to have assassinated President Lincoln with ended up in the second Mrs.Bryan's possession. Mrs. Bryan moved to Wichita Falls to live with her daughter in 1973 and sold the home. Mrs. Bryan lived in the Lees-Bryan House from 1914-1973; she was the longest resident of the home to date. Minimal changes have been made to the Lees-Bryan House: the back side porch was glassed in to provide an eating area for the family off of the kitchen, a sun room was added off of the dining room, and two bathrooms were added, one in the 1920's and one in 1945. The Lees-Bryan House has since been restored and is a testament to its and Granbury's former glory. The Lees-Bryan House was designated a Granbury Historical Landmark by the City of Granbury Historic Commission October 3, 2000. This information was obtained from their website.

Was used after 1854 start of Camp Henderson (named for land owner-townsite donor) for decisive public meetings. In 1867 Camp Henderson became county seat. Then men at 4th of July picnic here named town "Cleburne", for Civil War commander of many local veterans." Cleburne is the seat of Johnson County and it was formally incorporated in 1871. The city was primarily an agricultural center and county seat until the Santa Fe Railroad opened a major facility there in 1898. It's been awhile since my last review of the SE Library, so it's time to update my review. But,…read moreagain, full disclosure, as it's a library, it gets five stars. Unless, the employees are mean, all libraries get five stars. So, with that understanding, on to the review! The building, inside and out, is nice, but it is definitely small, when compared to most other area library at least. The downside to the size of this library is that it is hard to find a spot to actually read because this is a rather popular library. Realistically though, you can just take your books home, if there really is not a place to sit and read. But, if you're looking to study, you may want to call ahead to see if they have some kind of study space available or to at least get a feeling for how busy they are that day. And, speaking of studying, this library also has computer stations available. You have to sign up, but it's a pretty quick process. And, along with the size comes a reduced selection as the book selection is not extensive. But, you do not have to worry about wasting your time looking for a particular book because they have an online catalog. However, they do have a rather extensive collection of DVDs, with a few Blu-Rays thrown in as well. Again, if you're looking for something specific, you should call ahead or check out their online catalog. The children's section is separated from the rest of the library, and it even has its own separate computer stations available, just for the kids. I appreciate this type of firewall because it keeps the kids out of my area. And, the staff there is always watching, so you can feel safe taking your kids here. As for the staff, they are warm and courteous. If you need help, they will do whatever they can to make sure you get what you need. And, of course, as with any library, they have community boards (near the front doors) that advertise groups, story times, community events, and the like. It's a quick way to get the rundown on what's going on in our community, and some of the groups are interesting. All in all, I recommend this library if you're in the area. Of course, if you're not, check out YOUR local library. I'm sure it's cool too.

I love the library. From my days of being an awkward bookworm with braces, to my days now of being…read morea slightly less awkward bookworm with a permanent retainer, the library has always been a dear friend of mine. Now onto specifics, this library is tucked away off Greek Oaks, near the dog park and animal center, and has plenty of parking, though on a busy day you might find yourself parked off onto the side. I signed up for a card here, and found the process painless thanks to the friendliness of the staff here. I've also had trouble locating books and again immediately received assistance from the awesome staff. Computers/ work stations/ tables can get crowded, so if you're here to study, you might need to take the walk around a few times to get your ideal spot, and while doing so perhaps pick up a presidential auto-biography...wait, that was me...maybe I also picked up a YA novel. They offer a self checkout, which is quick and easy. and also they have a small coffee machine, it costs a dollar, but hey, perfect study fuel. Computers also offered, and also a children's section of the library. Friendly staff and books/ media galore? Yes please! Great place.
